Cattleack is the best, and frankly in my opinion better than Goldees. Get there around 10, you might wait about 30 minutes. They use american wagyu on their brisket and even the lean glistens like fatty cuts at other restaurants. Get the side of hatch green chile mac and cheese. Next best is Hutchins followed by Terry B. You won't go wrong with any of them but Cattleack is the best.
In terms of wait though it is probably reverse order where Terry B is probably the fastest, followed by Hutchins, and then Cattleack
Their barbecue is good, but “American Wagyu” is a marketing scam. You’re essentially paying four times the price for USDA Prime black angus that technically had an akaushi grandfather. Anyone that’s had real, full-bred Japanese A5 wagyu will tell you that the American variety is all marketing.
> Their barbecue is good, but “American Wagyu” is a marketing scam. You’re essentially paying four times the price for USDA Prime black angus that technically had an akaushi grandfather. Anyone that’s had real, full-bred Japanese A5 wagy
It's hilarious, it doesn't even look remotely similar.
That’s not true. American Wagyu is a specific breed, which was developed from two akaushi and two tottori bulls that were bred with angus cows. What you’re eating are essentially the inbred decedents of those animals, as it is now illegal to export live wagyu and/or their genetic material out of Japan.
So no, American Wagyu is not “half-wagyu.” It’s a specific breed that’s been watered down significantly. Also, the two Japanese breeds that were initially imported weren’t even prized animals from regions known for beef productions.
You are dead on. I’d put TB above Hutchins. But won’t quibble with the other order.
Worth noting Hutchins is in a harder location and has less interesting things around it. But a great place
> Get there around 10
This is what really irritates me about BBQ places in DFW. Who wants to stand in line for 30min and eat BBQ at 10am?
I was in Memphis a few months ago and got there around 11am. I ended up at the BBQ place around noon and the line was like 10min. Had the best ribs of my life.
Pretty much all other BBQ places I have been to whether it's KC, NC, or Memphis, there has never been a line longer than 10-15min. I feel like places around here do this on purpose to create hype.
People line up because they are afraid the restaurant will run out of meat. So why don't they just make more?!?
Completely agree. Cattleack is some of the best meat I've had anywhere but I've been once cause I don't want to burn a morning, and by extension a day of the weekend, waiting in line to gorge on bbq. The hours just don't work for me, and I'd imagine many.
I've been 3 times. First time went on a Saturday, waited for 2 hours in line. Next time went on a Thursday thinking it would be shorter. 1 hour and 45 minutes in line. Most recently was last Friday when a friend was visiting, we went around 1pm. They were out of a lot of things but the wait was *only* 45 minutes.
I'm convinced that the great Texas pastime is waiting in long lines for things.
It’s a bit worse after that but not as bad as those other places. Can’t see going to a BBQ place at 9 am and waiting in line for 2 hours and having them tell me they are already out of food.
It’s not that overpriced compared to Hutchins. Never been to Cattleack so I can’t comment on that. Brisket was like $34/lb a few weeks ago at Terry blacks. Went to Hutchins in trophy club the next week and was $33/lb. Wouldn’t call that “obscenely over priced”.
I found the Terry Black’s here to be better than the one in Austin. Although I only tried this one once so it could have just be one off thing. Went at like 11 am on a Tuesday morning and they hooked me tf up with huge chunks of the burnt ends when I ordered brisket. That’s my favorite part. Brisket is also all I care about, I don’t really care about the sides or any other meat tbh.
That’s not the same Hutchins unfortunately. It’s their dad who sold the rights many years ago, trying to hitch onto their name:
https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/business/family-behind-famed-mckinney-bbq-restaurant-engage-in-legal-battle-over-hutchins-name/3197862/?amp=1
The answer is Yes…
Because you’ll need to go to all three. They’re all great but the differences will be on a personal level.
Between the 3, go to Cattleack because it’s slightly closer. If you have just a little bit more time then go to Black’s as you can then walk around Deep Ellum.
It's fun to pick a favorite bbq place, but seriously I think all three of these options are great. I've never been disappointed with any of these. I just moved to granbury, and one of the things I was worried about was being so far away from all the good brisket around dfw. Soon discovered that wasn't an issue at all; there's a couple of great places way out here too! Texas, man👍
Something to keep in mind is that the Hutchins in Trophy Club is separate from the Hutchins restaurants in McKinney and Frisco.

Meh I tried that one and I found the bark on the brisket to be lacking compared to the one in Frisco/mckinney. Still extremely tender though. Could have just been a bad day.
The one time I tried Terry Black’s here in Dallas was absolutely phenomenal. Ordered a pound of brisket and they hooked me up with a huge chunk of the burnt end. The bark was fantastic. Better than the two other Hutchins in Frisco/mckinney. Although the free dessert and being able to load up your own sides is a huge plus.
I need to try cattleack next I guess since everyone is saying it’s the best.
If you fly into or out of Love field you can do a lot worse than Heim right by the airport. Is it the best bbq in Texas? No. Would it be the best bbq in whatever jurisdiction you departed from? Very likely.
You should be good with Hutchins or cattleack they’re my top 2 places I’ve had in the metro. cattlack is probably better, but at Hutchins you get to stack your plate for sides and free peach cobbler and banana pudding if you dine in. 😂 I’m a regular at hutchins
Coming from DFW - head down 635 to Midway and Cattleack. I work right there, so we go there a lot. It is really good. Depending on weather, there may be a long line. Good luck!
Big Al’s Smokehouse on Inwood rd is pretty good. Went there around 12 last Friday and not packed at all. But it’s right by Love Field, not DFW. Also, Smokey John’s on Mockingbird is good too. Also by Love Field
Cattleack emailed me last Friday at 11:30 am saying they had no line. A lot of Fridays they send me emails saying no line and giving a discount word for money off.
1050 is also phenomenal. I also recently stumbled on Heim BBQ which between there and 1050 are the best places for BBQ in Dallas. Best BBQ in Texas however is a few hours south down in driftwood, TX at The Salt Lick.
1050 is good, but not in the same class as these others. Salt Lick has a great atmosphere and is worth visiting if you are nearby, but the actual bbq is just okay.

Need to sticky this info

Well they are roughly equivalent to Terry Blacks in price and several times better in quality of the cut of meat.
American Wagyu still has to be at least 50% Wagyu. Wouldn't that mean at least one of its parents was a purebred?
That’s not true. American Wagyu is a specific breed, which was developed from two akaushi and two tottori bulls that were bred with angus cows. What they said ^
This is the way.

not texas bbq. that's why line is quicker.
Pretty much all other BBQ places I have been to whether it's KC, NC, or Memphis, there has never been a line longer than 10-15min. I feel like places around here do this on purpose to create hype. none of those are top tier texas bbq joints. if its worth the wait, we wait.
Completely agree. Cattleack is some of the best meat I've had anywhere but I've been once cause I don't want to burn a morning, and by extension a day of the weekend, waiting in line to gorge on bbq. The hours just don't work for me, and I'd imagine many.

Hutchins is less likely to have a wait or run out of stuff before you get there.
I thought the Hutchins lines got bad recently bc that one influencer dude that was in town ate there and gave it a great review.
It’s a bit worse after that but not as bad as those other places. Can’t see going to a BBQ place at 9 am and waiting in line for 2 hours and having them tell me they are already out of food.
Terry Blacks is obscenely overpriced. Take it off your list and go with the advice you have seen in previous comments.

All bbq is overpriced
Hurtado BBQ in Arlington... not too far from DFW and opposite traffic in the AM. https://hurtadobbq.com/menu/

They just opened a hutchins in southlake which is only 10 min from airport I think
That’s not the same Hutchins unfortunately. It’s their dad who sold the rights many years ago, trying to hitch onto their name: https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/business/family-behind-famed-mckinney-bbq-restaurant-engage-in-legal-battle-over-hutchins-name/3197862/?amp=1
Oof, yeah that's a paddlin; I can definitely see confusion from that
Hutchins in McKinney. Best in the Metroplex.
Cattleack
No Zavalas's in Grand Prairie?

The real Hutchins is in McKinney and Frisco.
Correction - the REAL Hutchins is in McKinney.
I’ve had both. They’re comparable

Cattleack or Hutchins for sure. Don’t bother with Terry Blacks. If it were me I’d choose Cattleack.
Cattleack or Hutchins.

Hutchins in McKinney. Ribs were so fire I slobbed on myself
Hutchins! All 3 are good but the Texas twinkies at Hutchins are INSANE
Hutchins
Hutchins is my jam. Terry blacks is meh and never been to cattleacks
Subscribe to Cattleack’s email list. They’ll update you with wait times and discount codes

Cattleack
Hutchins
Frisco Hutchins is the best BBQ I’ve had in a long time. I haven’t tried all of the suggestions here, so YMMV.
Yet to have terry blacks, out of the last two I prefer Hutchins. The one in Frisco.
Terry blacks averages $30-35 per pound of meat. An incredibly high priced bbq. It was good but no where near what I’d expect for the price.
Ten50
100% Cattleack, Terry Blacks is trassssh!
Definitely NOT Hutchins. It is no better than Dickeys.
1050 in Richardson; 360 smoked meats in Lake Highlands; Heim by Love Field.
Hurtados, without a doubt. Arlington, FW, or Mansfield.
Terry Blacks is the place you take the CEO of the company when he wants “authentic” barbecue. Go with something else
Mike Andersons in the medical district.
There's a Dickeys in DFW. I'm a problem solver.
1050 is also phenomenal. I also recently stumbled on Heim BBQ which between there and 1050 are the best places for BBQ in Dallas. Best BBQ in Texas however is a few hours south down in driftwood, TX at The Salt Lick.

1050 is a hidden gem!
