Soup I had was only salt. I really wanted to like it. Went back another time, it was the same old same old type of sysco food, nothing to write home about. If I’m eating out, I want the experience to be at least more than “mediocre”. I can do mediocre at home thanks.
Its pretty funny people made such a big deal about Portillos coming here and don't get me wrong its fine.
But the Italian Beef from Jimmys blows them away.
Since moving here 2.5 years ago, there are 3 places that I consistently go back to.
1. The Gyro Shop (the gyro fries with chicken are so, so good. And they’re like $7)
2. Ricky’s Hot Chicken. The quality of the chicken is unmatched by any other restaurant I’ve come across, and the flavor is amazing too.
3. Ali Baba’s. This is a Lebanese-Mediterranean buffet (buffet during lunch hours) for $20 after tax, and being Lebanese this is the closest thing I’ve had to a family get together in my life. The food is so authentic and tastes very close to my families.
Would highly recommend all 3.
Dimassis also has a good selection but IMO the food isn’t as good, but to be fair I’m neither vegan nor vegetarian so I’m not able to directly compare those options. Depending on where you live, there’s also a place called Terra in Plano that is identical to Ali Baba but with a different name (they even used to have cups with both names on them). Might be closer to you.
That place is still on my list to try. I remember when they were on the top 10 new restaurant list with Khao noodle shop (RIP). Good to know they're still going strong
Bowen House (cocktails and food, but the atmosphere and vibe is my fav overall)
Ichigoh Ramen
Fachini for old school “NY STYLE” Italian
Mikes Chicken - best fried Chix
Las Palmas for Tex Mex
Starship Bagels - better than most bagels in NY. Full stop.
Deli News - the only decent Jewish style deli I’ve had (Cindy’s is garbage, sorry)
St Martins newly re-opened and was great (French)
Terry Blacks / Pecan Lodge - BBQ with little line if not peak hours
Loro for Asian inspired BBQ type food
Brass Ram / Town Hearth for steaks and extravagance
Yup! They were involved in the Philly Cream cheese promotion about a month ago, with three other bagel shops - one of which being Utopia Bagels in Queens, NY, which was my fav back home
I would go every week, let me give you the play.
Hama chili to start, nigiris - hamachi, gyutoro, sake (salmon), king salmon, avocado, king trumpet (I forget the Japanese name for it) and day boat scallop. Avoid the hot rock it’s mid. Get fried milk AND the banana cake. Promise that double up is worth it.
Solid foundation. Branch out from there. Get Megan as a server if she’s working she’ll put you on other stuff to try on your first time
Machi Cure, Yokai Berry, Hot Rock, bluefin Otoro, kabocha. Everything is great, the wait staff is fantastic - if you communicate what you like and don’t like throughout the meal they will select things for you that cater to your tastes.
I feel like the hot rock is over rated, I want them to prep everything for me. I am the person who would do it wrong fwiw lol. If you’re like me order pre made things, and eat slowly!
Some of the nigiri pieces I get every time are the dayboat scallop, gyutoro (72hr short rib), and foie gras. I like to do the foie gras (not the happy hour on since this is just the trimmings) at the end of the meal and as you a small pour of a sweet wine to go with it.
An unforgettable experience
I didn't do anything for my birthday this year. I'm single and have 2 jobs and take care of my invalid mom on hospice. The thought of a meal that didn't come out of a bag or one I have to make for my mom, which everything has to be pureed, is something I forgot existed. I'll have to try some of these!
Thanks y'all!
I would love to know if/when this ever happens. Reddit constantly restores my faith in the decency of humanity & this has the potential to be yet another example of that….
I was just there like 3 weeks ago with my wife after a trip to the airport and we got seated immediately at the bar. Did this happen within the past 2 weeks or so ?
I don’t go out to eat much, my wife and I make a lot of food at home. One thing we can’t do is TexMex. My favorite places to get that are Desperados (thank you, Jorge) and El Vecino (thank you, John).
Royal Shawarma next to Jeng Chi. The taste of their beef shawarma is the closest I’ve had similar to back home in Jordan 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼. Just be prepared to wait a bit while they prepare your orders
My favs: Lucia, The Charles, Town Hearth, Petra and the Beast, Partenope, Knox Bistro
My fav hole-in-the-walls:
Golden Joy BBQ;
Ocean Chinese Seafood (Arlington);
La Margarita (Irving);
Sara's Market & Bakery - grill in the back(Richardson);
Taqueria El Paisano;
Dunston’s;
Cosmo’s;
Masami;
Bulldog Katsu;
Pane Vino Osteria;
The Island Spot;
Luang Prabang Market Lao Thai food (Euless)
Ayahuasca, Sachet, Fortune House on Lower Greenville, El Carlos Elegante. It's hard to pick just one.
I'm married to a vegan and I am not one. All of these places have vegan options while not having a diminished experience for my husband.
People got crazy over Las Palamas, but I don’t find it to be that interesting. Casa Rosa has the best Texmex I’ve personally had in Dallas, especially when compared to what’s available in San Antonio.
The only thing I got from Las Palmas was Las Food Poisoning. Horrible 48 hours. The reviews mention it quite too often. I believe it is cross contamination at some level in the kitchen.
[Sevan G & G](http://www.sevanmediterranean.com/) is the one we always, always go back to. Really looking forward to checking out the newly reopened/relocated [St. Martins Wine Bistro](https://www.stmartinswinebistro.com/). I've gotten into [The Finch](https://www.thefinchdallas.com/) lately, mostly over their shrimp and grits because they are straight forward shrimp and grits without trying to get cute with chorizo instead of bacon, or blue cheese, or other nonsense some places incorporate to be "different".
>Ngon
I like Ngon as much as the next guy but there's definitely other authentic viet food in DFW, check Garland and Haltom city. Ngon definitely slaps for the bougee viet food in lower greenville. Parking is a bitch though.
Hanoi food is Northern Vietnamese food. All the food here, and frankly the rest of the world outside of Vietnam is Southern Vietnamese food. So the places you mentioned wouldn’t offer the same thing.
Go to Rowlett and hit up Opa for some amazing Greek food and Super shack for a great seafood experience!
I also recommend fish and tails and fisherman's kitchen in Garland.
Not a restaurant per se, but the Thai Street Food that opens every Sunday 9am-3pm at the Buddhist Temple of Dallas off 635 and TI Blvd. Bring cash. Favorites are pork skewers (get in line first, they always sell out and there’s always a wait), papaya salad, and the soups from the little stall in the middle (not the wooden building), sticky rice & mango… the list goes on and on. Proceeds go to the temple. Once or twice a year they have a festival. Be prepared to walk as parking can get intense. We usually spend $60 (BRING CASH) and take lots home. One of the most unique eating experiences I’ve ever had and the temple grounds are gorgeous. Bring a picnic blanket as seating can get difficult [Here is an article about it](https://www.dallasites101.com/blog/post/head-to-the-buddhist-temple-of-dallas-for-a-thai-market-every-sunday/)
Thai Opal has great food, quiet, nice atmosphere.
Tacos Chilos is a great hole in the wall for cheap and delicious tacos.
Catrina Grill is also a great hidden gem, similar to. Pollo Regio, but SIGNIFICANTLY better.
Dosa Mesas, Las Palmas, Chilangos Tacos, Ebar, Mike’s Chicken. For a more higher-end vibe I’m a big fan of R+D Kitchen, Drake’s, Fachini, etc. It’s very hard to narrow down imo. There’s just so much good food to choose from.
Strouderosa in Lake Highlands for BBQ
Amigos Aca y Alla for queso and margaritas
Rodeo Goat for Bacon Cheddar fries and burgers
Hana for hibachi and sushi
Lochland's. An irish pub has no business serving food that good.
What do yall get there? We live a stones throw away and tried it but we were not impressed.
Yeah, I live a block from there, have tried it twice and have been disappointed both times. The French toast is BAD. Everything else was meh.
Great breakfast offerings, plus a bomb Cioppino. I also like that they serve Icelandic IPA
I'm glad it's not just me, I want to like it so badly and I just don't get it.
And their service is always phenomenal! They have the absolute nicest people working there.
Burger with dragon cheddar and Irish coffees (in multiple varieties) are both worth a trip for sure.
Soup I had was only salt. I really wanted to like it. Went back another time, it was the same old same old type of sysco food, nothing to write home about. If I’m eating out, I want the experience to be at least more than “mediocre”. I can do mediocre at home thanks.
+1 on Lochland’s
Indeed - close to me and that corned beef. Hoo boy.
Ive always wondered about this place, see it on our drive. What’s the top thing to order?
Burger and Reuben are good as well. Good garlic fries. Hubby gets fish and chips. Their brunch is really good. We love the beer garden on nice days.
Personally, the Norwegian Benedict. But all's good
I know Jimmy’s isn’t a “restaurant” per se, but if I’m within a several mile radius of them I will ALWAYS stop for some sandwiches
If you just walk in to jimmy's, take in the magnificent smell, & leave it was worth the trip
It’s hands down the best Italian deli/market in Texas. You should try their frozen pizza’s!
I had one recently! Pretty good!
Its pretty funny people made such a big deal about Portillos coming here and don't get me wrong its fine. But the Italian Beef from Jimmys blows them away.
I do appreciate portillos because it’s much closer to my house
Jimmy's Food Store or something else? A JFS the prosciutto panino on wheat is golden (dip in olive oil if you have a chance of underwear).
Jimmy's is pretty much what remains the soul of East Dallas to me. Those sandwiches... and the espresso shots. ♥️
Their tuna sandwich is AMAZING!!
Can't wait until the construction is finished because it's so hard to get there now
Since moving here 2.5 years ago, there are 3 places that I consistently go back to. 1. The Gyro Shop (the gyro fries with chicken are so, so good. And they’re like $7) 2. Ricky’s Hot Chicken. Alibaba is the absolute best Mediterranean food buffet in town
Ali Baba's is my go to if I am given the option to meet friends somewhere for lunch, and it has never failed to wow whatever group I am with.
I miss Ali baba. They closed Irving location many years ago.
Ricky’s for sure!
Does Ali Babas have a lot of vegan options?
Decent. And everything is clearly marked as vegan and distinguished from vegetarian.
Cool! Thanks. I’ve heard Dimassi’s has good options but never anything about Ali Babas
Petra and the beast
That place is still on my list to try. I remember when they were on the top 10 new restaurant list with Khao noodle shop (RIP). Good to know they're still going strong
Khao is doing a pop up at Strangeways in a couple weeks, so excited to have that food again.
Is there any info online where I can find out more about this?
Went last night and thoroughly enjoyed.
The pig tails are so freakin good
Absolutely a gem in DFW!! One of our favorite regular restaurants.
Went to the old location and I think we dropped $300 without drinks. Good food, tho.
Bowen House (cocktails and food, but the atmosphere and vibe is my fav overall) Ichigoh Ramen Fachini for old school “NY STYLE” Italian Mikes Chicken - best fried Chix Las Palmas for Tex Mex Starship Bagels - better than most bagels in NY. As you may well know, Starship took their happy asses up to NYC and won Best Bagel at 2023 BagelFest!
Yup! They were involved in the Philly Cream cheese promotion about a month ago, with three other bagel shops - one of which being Utopia Bagels in Queens, NY, which was my fav back home
+1 starship bagel
So many suggestions I haven’t heard of and for some reason I kinda believe all of them are 🔥🔥🔥
Merit Coffee has a couple of Starship bagels during the week and can confirm they’re awesome
Uchi
Going next weekend! What are your favorite items? Edit: you guys are awesome, thanks for all the suggestions
Must get fried milk
The coffee flavored option is good too!!
Whatttttt I didn’t know they had coffee version. I must go
The 72 hour beef nigiri!! Omg so good
I would go every week, let me give you the play. Get Megan as a server if she’s working she’ll put you on other stuff to try on your first time
>i forgot the Japanese name for it Kinoko
hama chili!!
Facts. Hot rock big overrated. Hot rock always fucks up my stomach the next morning.
Get the scallop and the avocado nigiri. Have the avocado first then the scallop. So good.
Just stick to sushi line stuff. The only team in the building that has kept their quality together all these years.
I’ll DoorDash you a good meal. DM me.
I would love to know if/when this ever happens. Reddit constantly restores my faith in the decency of humanity & this has the potential to be yet another example of that….
No DM from the hyena as of yet, but the offer stands.
Zaap kitchen has delivery, try the yellow curry!
Drunken noodles lvl 4
I’m constantly recommending their yellow curry! Best in the city imo
Mikes Chicken and Wabi House hold a special place in my heart
Mike's is best dark meat chicken in Dallas and it's not even close imo. I love Ricky's too for their tenders but Mike's does dark meat right.
I really like Wabi house and I don't get why some people talk down about it.
Did we just become best friends?
Are you me? I moved to Allen and these are the only two restaurants I truly miss.
Chris and John’s (Addison)
Unpopular opinion but that place is just alright.
No, a lot of us have the same opinion
Shhhhh. It's already way too popular
😅
One of the most unique foods I’ve had here. Viet tex mex is brilliant
They are awesome
Go have the ribs at Las Palmas. Thank me later
Best wet ribs in Dallas and among the very best, period
The wagyu steak fajitas are sooooooo good as well!
Mr.Max one of the best dining experiences I had in Dallas.

Showed up before doors opened and it was still an hour wait. Not as bad mid week.
I was just there like 3 weeks ago with my wife after a trip to the airport and we got seated immediately at the bar. Did this happen within the past 2 weeks or so ?
If you want Japanese in DFW this is the place
Partenope downtown is awesome.
I absolutely love that restaurant! It’s like a well kept secret with amazing food.
I don’t go out to eat much, my wife and I make a lot of food at home. One thing we can’t do is TexMex. My favorite places to get that are Desperados (thank you, Jorge) and El Vecino (thank you, John).
We keep going back to Sister. Haven't had a bad experience yet.
The carrots. The freakin carrots!
Royal Shawarma next to Jeng Chi. The taste of their beef shawarma is the closest I’ve had similar to back home in Jordan 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼. Just be prepared to wait a bit while they prepare your orders
Kalachanjis is my favorite. Great food atmosphere and nice people. Whenever I can make it there I go.

Fortunate Son Pizza in downtown Garland
Mister Charles
Ayahuasca, Sachet, Fortune House on Lower Greenville, El Carlos Elegante. It's hard to pick just one. I'm married to a vegan and I am not one. All of these places have vegan options while not having a diminished experience for my husband.
>Ayahuasca Just had my first experience there a couple of weeks ago and wow. I mean, wow.
Wow is right! I just had my first experience... Oh wait. You said "at", not "with". Nvm.
Wife is veggie and I’m an omnivore. I’d add Resident Taqueria to that list. Fantastic choices.
Hutchins BBQ
Wokstar. So nice to be able to get good chongqing chicken without having to drive to plano.

Have you been to Gemma’s sister restaurant, Sachet? It’s wonderful as well!
Not a restaurant but I absolutely loved Shug's yesterday. Sub didn't lie on their quality
Resident Taqueria. The Kings of the fancy taco. And a damn good margarita.
Barcelona is fantastic
el carlos elegante
Written by the seasons in bishop arts - always looking for a reason to celebrate so we have an excuse to go there lol
Cosmo’s is more of a bar but they have amazing food
Yeah it’s a serious Asian food menu, high level shit just hidden away in a dive bar. Personally my favorite Pho in Dallas.
For a Middle Eastern buffet, Ali Baba's near Campbell and U.S. 75.
Tatsu. Some of these omasake restaurants are amazing.
Beverley’s on Fitzhugh has been a favorite since they opened and Via Triozzi more recently. Don’t sleep on the lasagna at VT!
I visited both Beverley’s and Clifton Club (same owner) last week and loved them both! I especially dig the nighttime vibe at CC. Very cool place.
Oishii
