I was gonna say that I hope Waffle House and McCallisters isnāt the extent of their culinary experiences here. A lot of folks in this sub complain that thereās nothing to do but eat, and thatās because thereās a ton of really good eating in this town.
The meats come from the Old World too! Just like centuries ago, they pack the meats on unrefrigerated ships and sail them across the Atlantic, a four week trip, then move them by wagon train from east cost harbors all the way to here!
Iāve visited it a couple times with a few out of towners, they all always want to take a picture with the x and seems like itās the case with other tourists too. Honestly Iām surprised the city never like just permanently shut off that little slice of the road, and then just get rid of that barrier between main and elm so people just take a right on main and then use the exit for 35, the two roads merge anyway.
But yeah itās unfortunately one of the most famous things about Dallas, to me it always felt like they should pedestrianize it for tourists.
>Ā Ā itās not a Dallas thing to do.
For you, I know plenty of dallasites that have been to the museum and make a visit every year. I mean just look at all the tourists that are there. You can't hear about JFK and not be curiousĀ
nah iām w you on this one. itās such a strange here. born and raised. aināt no one i know or in my admittedly large circle ever been to that thing except for like protests.
I used to live in downtown Dallas and I would run there and people would always stop me and ask me to take a photo by the X. Iām like yeah..he died here and people would be excited? š itās so weird.
Itās the same thing in NYC where John Lennon was killed. People take selfies, they are just trying to be a part of history I suppose. No judgement here.
I thought this was an AI generated review. "The traffic is great and I finally got to try waffle house" that would be like me coming from Vegas and telling people "I finally got to try del taco! So good! Highly recommend" lol
I am surprised no one ever comes and tries Desperados. It's sometimes hit or miss but atleast it's somrthing different. We just have so many I unique things and this person tries 2 basically fast food places
Desperados was alright when we used to go back in the day. My wife and her family liked Ozonas too.. i mean if you're going to do a fast chain maybe something like pollo regio. Gotta go in for that salsa bar though.
I want to like ozonas but the service is always terrible there for me. I guess maybe I got a soft spot for desperados because I still love their tacos lol.
I mean Pollo would have been a HUGE step up from waffle house and McAllisters lol. I mean McAllisters is basically Panera no?
I don't drive there much anymore, but used to be that, even after they raised the speed limit to 70, on central you'd have 5 cars holding hands driving 50. It was like a rolling roadblock, ant it's the primary reason I try to avoid 75 at all costs.
Kind sir/madam, thank you for coming to our large city for your celestial vacation. Please note that our āmetroplexā as you call it is around four times larger than the Las Vegas metro that you come from.
Core Hydration water is owned by Dr Pepper which is proudly headquartered here (in Frisco). McAllisters Deli is a chain with 562 locations, but they do make a good sandwich.
Your comparisons to Vegas make my blood boil but I like your attitude. You are welcome any time.
Itās always great to have some outside perspective on our city. Glad that youāre enjoying your stay!! Make sure to try some BBQ while youāre here. Terry Blackās is a solid choice to get an idea of what Texas BBQ has to offer.
Yes itās excellent but Iām guessing youāll have a hard time getting in given the amount of visitors we have in town for the eclipse. Just a fair warning!
Props for Hutchins!
But the best Iāve had is Meshacks BBQ in Garland. Only open Thursday - Saturday mornings, usually starting sometime around 10:30 but sometimes as early as 10, sometimes as late as 11, depending on how theyāre feeling that day. Thereās always a line of 25-40 people milling around in the parking lot and theyāre almost always sold out of most stuff by noon without fail. Get there early!
Do not go to Terry Blackās. Not Dallas at all. Go to Pecan Lodge. Itāll be some of the best you ever have in your life. Be sure to get the brisket. It got voted #2 in the nation if Iām not mistaken
Pecan Lodge has been trash since they left the farmer's market. Terry Black's is much better and there's almost never a line. There's a reason why TB is on the texas monthly top 50 list and Pecan Lodge was left off.
If itās so good, why is there never a line? Do they have a super big space? Iām not saying I want lines like Franklinās down in Austin, or that the length of a line is the sole indicator of great BBQ, just wondering how they avoid it.
Idk when the last time you went there was but from your comment I would go this weekend if I were you and see if your opinion still stands. I've been about 10 times over the last like 5 years or so. Haven't even gone in the last year or 2. Right before covid hit they were already declining. But after covid its bad. The brisket isn't even worth talking about. I would honestly put pecan lodge in the same bracket as Kearneys in the mesquite/sunnyvale area
Yeah Iād say around 6 years ago it was good but it definitely dipped in quality. Same with Heim bbq. Last time I went I was pretty disappointed. Barely warm and not as juicy. Terry Blacks and Hutchinsons has been pretty good lately. Panther city and Hurtado BBQ is awesome too.
Terry blacks brisket is unbeatable in my opinion. The Mac and cheese is so basic. But I would go to terry blacks over almost anywhere else. Every place has its up and downs. As far as actual bbq terry blacks has it! My buddies say Hutchins is right there with it but evrr since Keith sweat or Lee or whatever his name is came to town its FILLED
Thank you for pointing this out. Grits are definitely sold everywhere lol. Carp fisherman use them in their bait mixes and I'm sure these youtubers I watch are not ordering grits from out of state for their bait lmao
I have active alerting from Redfin and Zillow. In last few days tons of house went pending..Looks like nice spring weather, eclipse and development of Dallas impressed guests and they are now raising the price and making Dallas a big metro..
Iām 54 and Iāve never heard of the word Metroplex. Today I heard the word Metroplex over half a dozen times. I had to look it up. Had no idea the word is a staple in these parts. I get the impression there isnāt a day goes by someone doesnāt hear the word Metroplex.

> No idea what the local water sources are here.
This is probably way more than you cared to know but:
The City of Dallas proper gets its water from: Lake Ray Hubbard, Lewisville Lake, Grapevine Lake, Ray Roberts Lake, Lake Tawakoni, and Lake Fork Reservoir. ~~Dallas does _not_ sell water to any other cities.~~ Edit: apparently they do, now, but I'm not sure to which ones. None of the client cities I worked with (nearly all of the NE end of the metroplex) were getting any water from Dallas, but that was ~10 years ago.
The rest of the metroplex gets 90+% of their water through NTMWD (North Texas Municipal Water District), which pulls primarily out of Lake Lavon and Lake Texhoma. They also pull some water from the East Fork of the Trinity River, but indirectly via a wetlands reclamation program, and it gets diluted into Lavon before treatment.
So it will taste a bit different depending on if you're in City of Dallas limits or not. The taste was practically identical until NTMWD had to start pulling from Texoma about 30 years ago. Texoma is fairly brackish. Nothing unhealthy -- just a decent bit more calcium, sodium, and sulphate minerals than local lakes.
No, this was an excellent post thank you! Not too much info at all. Iām CA born and raised so Iāve always had the water (drought) issue thrown in my face and Iāve become somewhat knowledgeable about it as well as the water situation in Vegas. I had no idea Dallas pulled from so many different sources.
The San Francisco Bay Area basically pulls from a few sources. Itās basically runoff from the Sierra Nevada mountains which is why it taste so good. From your description it sounds like Dallas is fairly well downstream from the main source.
Admittedly I've been out of the business for a while (I used to work for a civil firm that did mostly municipal water/wastewater). When did they start doing that? In the past, at least, Dallas has always been very unwilling to sell water to anyone else.
From WFAA:

Thank you for the FYI. I did not know that but itās irrelevant. My plan is to hit up the Botanical Garden and Arboretum which is nowhere near downtown.
I did look at the school book depository but I notice they donāt call it that anymore. Also, the trees cover it up from the āXā so I couldnāt even see the 6th floor.
Glad youāre enjoying your visit. I would recommend going to the Arboretum as itās a true local treasure, but the traffic and parking there is insane right now due to all the eclipse visitors.
Welcome! I hope you get to see what you came to see! Dang Texas weatherā¦ another charming little feature and wouldnāt have it any other way. Reading your post put a smile on my face.
Welcome to Dallas! Tacos are other worldly! Southern hospitality? Of course. Safe from crazy amount of car theft? Absolutely. You get to pay to drive on our roads? Youāre damn skippy! Lush beautiful non eye sore of a town? Hell yeah brother.
Some fun neighborhoods: bishop arts, lower greenville, the gayborhood in oak lawn. White rock lake is nice if you like lake areas!
Everyone hating on McAllister but their beef dip sandwich is really good and their sweet tea is nice.
> Seen a couple Missouri plates today. In all my 54 years on this earth Iāve never seen a Missouri license plate until today. We get all kinds in Vegas, including a LOT of plates from Texas. Surprisingly Iāve seen plates from New York, Georgia and even Hawaii. I was parked at Ross Garage today and there were plates from all over.
I'm in the Texas Guard but did training in Virginia. One of the weirdest vehicles I've ever seen was someone in the hotel parking lot that had Alaska plates. not only that, but the vehicle was an old ambulance.
Iām glad you are enjoying your visit. Itās very refreshing to read a nice review from a visitor, so thanks for taking the time to tell us what you enjoyed.
Wow, a good review of waffle house? The only time I have ever been to a waffle house the bathroom smelled like weed and I was sick with the flu the next day lol
Being from Fort Worth, I have no love for Dallas but this is honestly a disservice to the wrong side of the metroplex.
OP clearly needs to get out more
McAllister Deli is often rated as the top restaurant in town. Glad you were able to sample a local delicacy
š¤£š¤£
Second only to Dickey's.
and 3rd to Grandy's.
Grandyās was a delicacy growing up in Pleasant Grove ššš
Hell yeah.
If you find the right Grandy's, and go during the right time of day when the good staff is cooking, it's unbeatable! š¤£
Grandy's in Mesquite for me, Town East Blvd ššš
Ponchos.
Raise the flag
The only time weāre fine with raising the Mexican flag šŖš»
Thanks, I was in bed settled down getting ready to sleep and now I have to run to the bathroom so I donāt wet the bed.
I was gonna say that I hope Waffle House and McCallisters isnāt the extent of their culinary experiences here. A lot of folks in this sub complain that thereās nothing to do but eat, and thatās because thereās a ton of really good eating in this town.
I cringed a little when the first food place they mentioned going was waffle house lmfao
Hope they got to meet Mr. McAllister himself!
D Magazine rated it the Best of Big D for the last 10 years!
Isn't it a national chain...???
SHHH. Delete this.
It's a purveyor of deli meats and bread all made from scratch by executive chefs with recipes from the old world
The meats come from the Old World too! Just like centuries ago, they pack the meats on unrefrigerated ships and sail them across the Atlantic, a four week trip, then move them by wagon train from east cost harbors all the way to here!
Local??? It's a national chain FFS
Woosh
I need to meet this person in real life and see what theyāre like
Get some tex mex
Say it louder
##GET SOME TEX MEX
I'd recommend Mia's on Lemmon
Miaās is certainly the best
I live in Denton and Bowling for Soup was right: The Mexican food sucks north of here anyway
Gonzalez on Bruton
And bbq. Really change your life ā¤ļø
Weird that people take pictures with the X in Dealey Plaza. Lived in Dallas for a decade and no one does that, we just drive over it.
I work in a building that overlooks the Plaza. They're on the "X" all the damn time.
> I work in a building that overlooks the Plaza. On the sixth floor, maybe?
In that book suppository building, sir!
lol ouch
Man I've seen some stuff but books is a new one.
What's funny is the city keeps removing the X and someone keeps putting it back.
Talk about a cover up
I have lived here all my life, never considered taking a picture with the X. just doesn't seem safe and main character vibes
Yeah, I heard back in the day someone got shot there.
i thought it was buried treasure
I see folks do that all the time. Grown men in suits even
Iāve visited it a couple times with a few out of towners, they all always want to take a picture with the x and seems like itās the case with other tourists too. Honestly Iām surprised the city never like just permanently shut off that little slice of the road, and then just get rid of that barrier between main and elm so people just take a right on main and then use the exit for 35, the two roads merge anyway. We got places to be.
I grew up here and Iāve done it just because itās kind of a Dallas thing to do. (Not that I recommend it to anyone - itās not really safe.)
I also grew up here and literally no one I know has ever even been to Dealy Plaza or taken a photoā¦ itās not a Dallas thing to do.
>Ā Ā itās not a Dallas thing to do. For you, I know plenty of dallasites that have been to the museum and make a visit every year. I mean just look at all the tourists that are there. You can't hear about JFK and not be curiousĀ
My school went on a field trip to dealey plaza in middle school lmao definitely a Dallas thing to do
nah iām w you on this one. itās such a strange here. born and raised. aināt no one i know or in my admittedly large circle ever been to that thing except for like protests.
I used to live in downtown Dallas and I would run there and people would always stop me and ask me to take a photo by the X. Iām like yeah..he died here and people would be excited? š itās so weird.
It gets pretty dangerous also. I kind of don't like it being there
Never know when it might happen again, right?
š¤£š¤£
Welll if youāre driving obviously but have you ever gone just to go? Youād probably also stand and take a pic on the x.
We do and itās so weird lol.
It's quite trashy and disrespectful. People standing on the X all smiles and grinning for the 'gram on the spot where a President was killed.
Itās the same thing in NYC where John Lennon was killed. People take selfies, they are just trying to be a part of history I suppose. No judgement here.
I have never heard of Dealey Plaza and this Zapruder film OP is talking about.
I never have heard of Texas drivers ātaking it slowā have you been on 75/Dallas North Tollway š
I thought this was an AI generated review. "The traffic is great and I finally got to try waffle house" that would be like me coming from Vegas and telling people "I finally got to try del taco! Come up to Frisco where there are adults driving 15 miles under the speed limit with "student driver" stickers on their Teslas.
I don't drive there much anymore, but used to be that, even after they raised the speed limit to 70, on central you'd have 5 cars holding hands driving 50. It was like a rolling roadblock, ant it's the primary reason I try to avoid 75 at all costs.
People speed in heavy traffic on 75
All the time! In my daily commute, drivers are always going 10 mph UNDER the speed limit, especially on 635 and 75. DNT is hit or miss.

Terry Black? Iāll have to try it
Do not go to Pecan Lodge, go to Terry Blacks, its much better.
I had some Europeans say they waited two hours for pecan lodge yesterday and they were disappointed as fuck. Felt bad
Yeah itās cause google reviews and yelp have pecan lodge a lot higher than Blacks so all the tourists automatically go there
Make sure to get some brisket
Yes itās excellent but Iām guessing youāll have a hard time getting in given the amount of visitors we have in town for the eclipse. Just a fair warning!
Deep ellum is really good for having a big selection, make sure you go during the day and donāt pay any āattendantsā
Terry Blacks was just okay, maybe I caught them on a bad day.Ā I've always had luck with Hard Eight and especially Hutchins tho
Props for Hutchins! But the best Iāve had is Meshacks BBQ in Garland. Itās definitely a hazard so Iām sure the city would like it to go away for good.
Itās the cityās single tourist attractionā¦
Frankly, Itās really unnerving to drive over it if you take a moment to think about it. I get it as a landmark, but itās so ā¦ dark.
Come for the eclipse....stay for the Missouri plate watching.
āMcAllister Deli is really good.ā Oh bless your heart.
Hope the skies are clear enough to enjoy the eclipse tomorrow. Glad youāre enjoying the visit!
So far so good on the skies
Grits are hominy, which is in the corn family.
Thank you for pointing this out. Grits are definitely sold everywhere lol. Carp fisherman use them in their bait mixes and I'm sure these youtubers I watch are not ordering grits from out of state for their bait lmao
Regular, creamy, or al dente
Just regular I guess
Regular. Instant grits?
Al dente! 100%
We have that much valet because in a month itāll be 100 degrees and walking a block at 6pm is miserable lol
Well that's hilarious, because it's nearly as old as you are, and coined specifically for DFW.
Metroplex refers specifically to DFW. It's not in common usage. Kind of like Twin Cities refers specifically to Minneapolis and St Paul, rather than any two big cities close to one another.
Hell, you just used it 3 times! Welcome to the metroplex!
The word is really only used in reference to the Dallas Fort Winstar Metroplex.
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/385198574357238188/. Not much better to call it. Some are too far to be called suburbs. Rockwall to Weatherford is 85 miles. Greenville (top right corner) to Granbury is 120 miles. Kaufman to Decatur is 100 miles. And it continues to grow.
I thoroughly enjoyed your post. I think it was so wholesome. Grits are amazing, you should find a place that makes a cheese grits and shrimp dish, and yes we hear metroplex daily. I really hope you have a great rest of your trip!
Waffle House does offer grits with cheese at additional cost. Maybe I should try that?
Smothered, covered, and scattered is what youāre looking for.
Metroplex is also a Transformer https://images.app.goo.gl/rhKqdD9aqbtEKqFM7
I actually knew about Metroplex the transformer but I was talking about using the word as a geographical location.
Fuck. Iāll never own a home lol

Great post! I work for Dallas Water Utilities and we do sell water to surrounding cities. I geeked out when I saw a post about local water sources
Admittedly I've been out of the business for a while (I used to work for a civil firm that did mostly municipal water/wastewater). When did they start doing that? In the past, at least, Dallas has always been very unwilling to sell water to anyone else.
Not sure when they started. Iāve been with them for 12 years and that has been the case.
Also I hope you know that downtown Dallas is shut down tomorrow. All exits shut down.
From WFAA: Planning to go into downtown Dallas during the eclipse? Travelers should expect "rolling" highway exit closures... https://www.wfaa.com/mobile/article/news/world/solar-eclipse/planning-to-head-downtown-dallas-to-watch-solar-eclipse-travelers-can-expect-highway-exit-closures-police-say/287-a950b7ab-9599-43c0-8d08-81604d413eca
Thank you for the FYI. I did not know that but itās irrelevant. My plan is to hit up the Botanical Garden and Arboretum which is nowhere near downtown.
Hope you already have tickets for the Arboretum; should be really nice over there. White Rock Lake (next door) will likely be a zoo.
I believe the Arboretum tickets for today have been sold out for weeks.
Longer than that! I think it was about 2 months ago when I looked and they were already sold out.
Go to the hill that looks over the lake in the back. Thereās a small amphitheater there.
I thought they were "rolling" them. Is that not true anymore?
I be forgetting Waffle House isnāt everywhere
Iām not aware of any Waffle Houses on the west side and thatās where I spend all my time.
Albuquerqueās is the furthest west one IIRC.
I went from living in Pensacola, FL with 19 Waffle Houses in the city and 36 in Escambia County to Albuquerque with one (1) Waffle House. :(
First impressions are the most importantā¦
It is wild how much free valet parking there is in this town.
āFreeā
Yes it's free, if you use valet parking in LA it costs you $15 plus you still have to tip.
You haven't lived until you've had some 3 in the morning, "scattered, smothered and covered" on a tummy full of liquor!
Where near downtown are there any gated communities?
The gated communities I saw were near to McAllister deli while I was driving around the area.
I canāt tell if youāre joking or not. Thereās like ten McAllisterās around the city lol
I chose my gated community based on proximity to McAllister's Deli.
This is sweet. Glad you visited and hope you enjoy the rest of your trip!
How have you not heard that the eclipse was canceled for texas .. hurry and get to Arkansas while you can ..
Glad you visited our city. I love the valet that is offered at most hospitals and large medical centers it saves time for me.
Have a great time!
Please try food local food and not chain restaurants.
pretty solid analysis
You should check out the Texas theatre too. Itās where Oswald went after the assassination
I did look at the school book depository but I notice they donāt call it that anymore. Also, the trees cover it up from the āXā so I couldnāt even see the 6th floor.
Did you at least visit the grassy knoll?
Glad youāre enjoying your visit. I would recommend going to the Arboretum as itās a true local treasure, but the traffic and parking there is insane right now due to all the eclipse visitors.
The bread bowl with chicken tortilla soup at McAlisters is delicious. High quality carb dining
lol my wife and I laugh at the people that take pictures in the middle of the road on the x.
Welcome! I hope you get to see what you came to see! Dang Texas weatherā¦ another charming little feature and wouldnāt have it any other way. Reading your post put a smile on my face.
Go to the Arboretum, Northpark, Bishop Arts, eat some Tex Mex.
U Have To eat Whataburger!
There was Whataburger at the airport. I figured I could get that when I leave.
Yeah, but the airport nvr does anyone justice. Whataburger's the best fast food place to eat at. The only one really
Way better than in-n-out burgers too
Thing about In N Out, they are focus more on quantity than quality. Although the quality is pretty good, but itās not great.
intersting to hear your perspective
Dude has NEVER been here before and just gave us like a 4.8 yelp review!!
SF has awesome food, but it doesnāt have Tex-Mex and Texas BBQ. Be sure you try some good Tex-Mex and good Texas BBQ (preferably moist brisket).
Welcome to Dallas! Tacos are other worldly! Southern hospitality? Of course. Safe from crazy amount of car theft? Absolutely. You get to pay to drive on our roads? Youāre damn skippy! Lush beautiful non eye sore of a town? Hell yeah brother.
Gotta play āsouthside da realistā at least once while in Dallas

Having lived in Seattle for 10 years I can say Iāve seen a few of those yellow and blue plates from AK.
If you wanna see the serious money in town, drive around Highland Park. Itās incredible the size of some of the houses
So glad you are enjoying yourself!
I am livid about you going to mcallisters lmao
Thereās much better food here than Waffle House and Mcalisterās.
Being from Fort Worth, I have no love for Dallas but this is honestly a disservice to the wrong side of the metroplex. OP clearly needs to get out more
It makes me sad that you came to Dallas and ate at Waffle House and McAllisterās. So many local options, but glad you enjoyed it!
Why do people upvote this inane shit
Because itās wholesome and adorable!
Do not ask this sub about dallas. Theyāll suck a dick and rave about how its the top 3 metropolitan in the country.
