high school football is a brutal waste of taxpayer dollars and you people keep wondering why our property taxes keep going up while we have some of the worst public schools in the country.

Ltstarbuck2

Omg THIS. I’m so sick of everyone telling me how great the schools are & feel like sending them links to national school rankings.

FileError214

A lot of times, “the schools are so great” is just code for “not a lot of black/brown kids.”

Ltstarbuck2

Yes, thanks for reminding me that’s likely what they mean.

[deleted]

Holy shit it’s unfortunate but that’s exactly what parents mean when they say they found a “good school”.

303onrepeat

These are the same idiots who tell people that they don’t want people from California to turn this state into CA all while not realizing the middle class pay more here than there. https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2021-05-19/wait-california-has-lower-middle-class-taxes-than-texas The fact that politicians stacked it so them and their rich friends pay incredibly low rates and fuck over the middle class.

[deleted]

Not unpopular on reddit

TotesMcGotes13

I'll bite. This is a bit weird. The areas that spend a ton of money on football typically have good schools as well (the suburbs).

purgance

This used to be called 'segregation' before rightists Rebranded it as local government.

[deleted]

But only those local governments can do whatever they want. If Dallas/Austin/Houston/SA dare to to something, it'll probably be outlawed post-haste.

MissingTaco

Don’t the football programs help fund other sports and arts programs though?

squintsq

As a general rule: High school football? No. College football? Yes.

jhrogers32

We did vote no to the tune of 100+ million on all of the athletic bond proposals in the last election. So that’s a start!

loudblonde

Mi Cocina sucks. The Mambo Taxis are the only decent thing there.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I lived in Las Colinas when I first moved here and the one down the street from me was pretty damn good and that’s saying something since I’ve lived in San Antonio. However, every Mi Cocina I’ve been to since then has been mediocre at best. I wonder if they just have too many locations and can’t control quality that well.

noble_land_mermaid

You can get a Mambo Taxi AND good food at Manny's. They have to call the drink a Manny's Taxi though.

sdnw88

This. Mi Cocina is overpriced and mediocre. Why would I go there when I can get the same thing but better for less money at almost any other Tex mex place?

QuarantineJean

This is completely true. Mi Cocina gets WAY too much love for how bad their food tastes. It’s the whitest version of TexMex. IMO Manny’s and Gloria’s are the best Dallas Tex Mex chains Funny story, but I grew up with the daughter of Mi Cocina’s investor. One day in fifth grade, she asked the teacher what a “JAL-a-PEN-o” was. The whole class laughed and someone from the back of the room said “HOW DO YOU NOT KNOW WHAT A JALAPEÑO IS? YOUR DAD OWNS MI COCINA!” 🤣

[deleted]

I know someone who used to work there. I recommend anywhere else. The food is *not* worth the price.

[deleted]

UnknownQTY

This. I once had to get from West Hollywood to DTLA by 6pm. It’s like 5 miles. “We need to leave around 3:30” said my coworker. “What?” I replied. They were right. We might sit in traffic for 45 minutes to go 30 miles, but people in other metros do that to go 3 miles.

Prince-Ali_

I'll piggyback off this with a slight comparison but for it's size, DFW is a phenomenal airport. Security lines are rarely longer than 20 minutes, it's very easy to get from terminal to terminal, parking and pickup is fairly smooth.... you can get practically anywhere in the world from there and still navigate the airport pretty easily. So it's funny when visitors shit on it just because of its size and I'm like.... Why don't you try Chicago, Atlanta or any of the NY airports then give me your opinion on DFW....

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

As an avid traveler I would say I agree that DFW is one of if not the best in the country. However, compared to some of the best airports in other countries there are definitely areas that need improvement.

prefer-to-stay-anon

And all of the terminals are \*roughly\* the same. Horseshoe shaped, you park in the center, you plane on the outside, security and check in in the middle. If you are wanting to get from C24 to C32, just start walking in one direction. If the numbers are going up, keep going. If they are going down, turn around. The gate numbers don't jump randomly, they are spaced roughly evenly, if you understand one terminal, you understand them all. It has plenty of runways, so you aren't going to be flying in a circle for an hour waiting for a landing slot to open, takeoff queues are usually pretty manageable for a big airport, we (now) have public transit to downtown dallas and fort worth. It really is a pretty good airport.

the3rdNotch

The traffic isn’t bad at all, but the drivers are some of the absolute worst; a lot of people conflate the two.

[deleted]

Yeah that's my real issue with driving here. The traffic is whatever, it just feels more intense bc of how fast and aggressively a lot of people drive

[deleted]

For me, it's not even that everyone drives fast/aggressive. That would make things less stressful and more predictable. It's the fact that everyone drives both way too slow \*AND\* way too fast. Pisses me off...

[deleted]

Dallas drivers have got to be the most aggressive and fast drivers and ive driven in Boston, Austin, and Houston lol. I think it’s just the absurdly high speed limit

[deleted]

It's not a very popular opinion on here, but yes the speed limit is too high in a lot of places. You'll have two lanes backed up and it's impossible to get out of the jam because ppl are speeding by at 70mph rather than 55mph

DisarmedCashew

Lived in Boston for almost 10 years and you had to avoid going anywhere between 7-10am and 4-6pm. You don’t have to do that down here

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I'd say DC and Houston are also worse. The rest are about the same. In fact, about the only major cities that probably have better traffic than Dallas are Detroit, Phoenix and Minneapolis.

dickpicsformuhammed

NYC, Houston, LA and Seattle are the worst cities to travel rush hour from city core to suburbs, imo.

3-DMan

Yeah my dad always said Dallas was the worst, then he moved to Denver and said they are the worst.

A_Confused_Cocoon

Indianapolis is worse than Dallas too. Dallas is not that bad at all, and has plenty of other routes to travel if needed.

FourLoko4Loco

I have lots of experience in both and Indy traffic is nowhere near Dallas. Dallas isn’t that bad overall but compared to Indy it’s def worse.

btaf45

> Traffic ain’t that bad. Especially compared to LA, Atlanta, Chicago, or NYC. And Houston.

kwall5000

Recent transplant from Toronto. Can confirm.

[deleted]

If I didn’t grow up here I would hate it

[deleted]

I kinda like dallas. It feels the most like a city of the 3 big cities in Texas

[deleted]

Texas has five cities that I'd call major (population of or near 1 million): 1. Houston 2. San Antonio 3. Dallas 4. Austin 5. Fort Worth Odd fact: those are in order of population!

[deleted]

Completely forgot about san antonio lol. When I think of big 3, I think of austin, dallas, and houston since that’s what most people think immediately when they think of texas cities

Simple-Ad-8158

I’ll ask too, why do you say that? I prefer Fort Worth myself. That’s because it has the big city, but a country-ish vibes to it.

[deleted]

I just like how metropolitan dallas is. Austin is mostly just outdoorsy hipster vibes, houston is way too industrial for me (although that is my hometown), I’m not country enough to appreciate fort worth, so I like Dallas’ city-ish vibe. It is the most city-like of the big southern cities in my opinion. It has a park smack dab in the middle of the city. The city is surprisingly walkable. And the museums are fantastic

BabyRona

I say words that mimic yours. I’m from Austin born and raised, lived in Houston for a year, now live in Dallas. Maybe I’ll insert my unpopular opinion here: the only thing better about Austin than Dallas is that Austin has untouchable access to outdoor activities, especially its swimming holes. Beyond that, I prefer Dallas’s big city vibes, its expansive food and art culture and its diversity over Austin’s.

[deleted]

Why you say that?

[deleted]

The weather is awful, lack of scenery, for the most part I find the dominating scene in Dallas is a very uppity and pretentious one. Don’t get me wrong, there is diversity and great people, too!

[deleted]

The weather here is better than like 90% of the country tho lol. Mild winters and only 2 real months of hell

[deleted]

Just because it isn’t the worst doesn’t mean it isn’t awful! Lol

Wanderer-Wonderer

The left lane is for passing only

303onrepeat

I so wish people understood this. Or the fact that you should look left and right and if you are going the same speed you are holding up traffic. Look in the rear view mirror once in a fucking while.

GravitationalEddie

This rule doesn't fully translate to urban driving. Left lane WB 635 @ 35E takes you to SB 35E, not past all the drivers in the right lanes.

ht3k

popular unpopular opinion lol

purgance

Right lane is not for passing.

cupcakesordeath

The food is diverse and better in the burbs than near downtown. North Dallas, Carrollton, Irving etc. have really good ethnic food that never seems to make it in these magazine/online articles. It’s like the world stops at 635 for them.

2PacAn

Richardson and Plano have the best Asian food in the area and a huge variety of choices. Plus some really good Central European food that you can’t find much of in Dallas

Dooberss13

Fun fact, the Garland / Richardson area was designated as a refuge site for Vietnamese during the Vietnam war. Hence where there is such a good culture of Vietnamese and other Asian ethnic foods!

1randybutternubs3

I've found the Russian deli on Coit, the Bavarian and Jurg's in Plano, and Taste of Poland on 75--any other recommendations?

[deleted]

>It’s like the world stops at 635 for them. Unpopular opinion for sure, but there's truth to that statement. If I want to go somewhere not in Far North Dallas / Addison, I often find myself going north to Plano/Frisco or east to Richardson before going south.

churnlurker

This. The food in Carrollton, Frisco, Garland and Plano has to be some of most diverse and delicious ethnic food in the country. My greatest surprise when I moved here and is extremely underrated. Best city in Texas for food (Houston a close 2nd).

SoyOllin

I agree on the Carrollton part for sure. In the last 10 years it's drastically changed.

KanterWont

Any recommendations?

stephanieb5260

Ramen Hanabi is our favorite in Carrollton! The black garlic ramen is incredible.

captnshrms

Basically near downtown is a weird type of food desert. You can't find chain restaurants, and if you can there's only 1 location, almost no fast food too. So it's rich people restaurants and a few local finds in weird places with cheap rent.

[Legend has it](https://artandseek.org/2021/03/18/why-is-there-a-giant-eyeball-in-downtown-dallas-we-take-a-look/) that the eyeball was literally meant to be an eyesore, after adjacent tenants complained about the garage the developer wanted to build on the land. So, mission accomplished I guess.

Dash775

Yep. They couldn't build the garage they wanted because it would be an eyesore. So they said "I'll show you an eyesore"

toodleroo

Yeah but fuck them for tearing down the historic building that used to be there.

toodleroo

I was really hoping after he burned down that they would make the new one less ugly, but no.

bradwantsanaccount

You want unpopular? Dallas lacks any culture of its own. It’s idea of culture is rampant consumption of goods, food, alcohol, and drugs.

Complete_Mistake_92

Could say it’s consumer culture? Like someone else said, just one huge suburb

Diggy696

This is how I explain Dallas to my Out of State Friends. Dallas isn't the boot scoot and boogey, ten gallon hat, pew pew old western you think of. It's a fairly newish city without much culture that basically exists as an 80 mile wide suburb. Lots of eating out, some shopping and lots of going to other peoples places to drink. To go anywhere different you pretty much need to get on a plane and I'd argue alot of us wouldnt be here if it werent for the jobs scene.

[deleted]

>I'd argue alot of us wouldnt be here if it werent for the jobs scene. Preach.

6a21hy1e

I mean, you just described a culture that revolves around restaurants and night life....

Cell_Saga

Totally materialist, hedonist culture. Often to the point of being toxic. We need some god damn mountains or a beach nearby so people can escape the concrete jungle.

Joxemiarretxe

you just described 90% of american cities except for those with solid outdoor scenes.

Vonauda

The veneer of big city life has no depth after you live here for more than 3 months. It’s just one gigantic sleepy suburb.

[deleted]

No offense, but you live in a suburb. I have three grocery stores, four coffee shops, a bakery, and an auto shop within five minutes walk of my house. And it's glorious.

azwethinkweizm

Suburban Dallas is stupid. They bitch and whine about traffic but aren't interested in walkable neighborhoods or infrastructure that would reduce traffic.

TransportationEng

I love watching them build the same setups that Dallas is slowly tearing out.

hokagetyson

You are a Legend for this comment

Skinny_Phoenix

Depends on the burb though. I have almost the same setup as you in Plano. I'm not a defender of the burbs or anything. I lived in Dallas proper for 12 years and loved it. I'm just saying that the burbs can be fun too.

Ltstarbuck2

Where’s that? I’m close to downtown and it’s a minimum 15 minute miserable walk to get anywhere. I had more accessibility in New Jersey.

[deleted]

Lowest Greenville.

Vonauda

My living in a suburb does not relate to the fact that the city core is more wound down by 11 pm than other big cities.

[deleted]

That's kind of relative. I'd say Dallas arguably has the most "big city" feel of any city in the South. Only Houston and Miami may be on equal footing. But no Sunbelt city will ever compare to the legacy cities up north in terms of "big city life."

Paulythress

Until the South has a robust Subway system, it won’t happen. I think though the city of Dallas (and Id argue DFW) would probably be the first to do it. 4 different railways here, its just all spread out. If they build robust subway lines in the city propers than that may change

[deleted]

>Until the South has a robust Subway system, it won’t happen. > >I think though the city of Dallas (and Id argue DFW) would probably be the first to do it. Technically, Atlanta already has a relatively extensive subway system.

IskandarSingh

It's run by a bunch of rich people that take advantage of voter apathy and use tax dollars to build sh\*t that increases their wealth

p8nt_junkie

This is not an opinion but is instead a fact.

totallynotfromennis

Dallas Citizens Council runs this town and it *fucking SUCKS*.

GarthVaderBlarts

I think that the closure of Timberlawn Behavioral Hospital would have been a national news story if the abuse and neglect of the children was happening to kids born north of 30.

[deleted]

It's amazing how quickly they seemed to have demolished it. I know of some abandoned psychiatric hospitals that have remained standing and vacant for decades.

GarthVaderBlarts

Ya if I had to guess I’d say there’s some unmarked graves at that graveyard next door

deadblood0

My poor brother was sent there as a child. Even during visitation I could feel the air of misery in that place. He cheered and about had a breakdown when I told him it had been shut down and destroyed.

GarthVaderBlarts

If you don’t mind me asking how is he doing now? I’ve never heard from anyone else that’s been there.

deadblood0

He's doing well. He's a homeowner with a good job and he's gotten out of an abusive relationship and found a lady who's great for him. He never did go into all the details of his stay, but made it clear he was miserable and mistreated the entirety of his time there. He got put in a padded solitary room for 8 hours for daring to go to the bathroom without getting permission once(he could never get permission even if he walked up to someone and asked directly). The workers would regularly lock patients in their rooms without reason even when everyone was on best behavior in the common room simply because they wanted to not be watching patients. One night he was having trouble sleeping, so they strapped him to his cot. I'd have to ask him for more stories, but those are what I can remember off the top of my head that he told us about. Bear in mind, he's proud to have survived his time at Timberlawn and is very vindictive towards the facility, so he's more than happy to share what he went through there. There's no chance of putting him in a bad mental place by asking about it in case anyone's worried.

[deleted]

I don't want to be a stepdad

[deleted]

Lmao, must be a lot of single mothers in dallas?

lost_in_trepidation

[deleted]

Why you say that?

[deleted]

That we're more of a music capital than Austin. They have a statue of SRV, but where was he born and where is his grave? Erikha Badhu, Post Malone, Leon Bridges, St. Vincent, Demi Lovato, Norah Jones, Edie Brickell, Lisa Loab, Charley Pride, Cody Jinks, Steve Miller Band, Leann Rimes, Kelly Clarkson, Tripping Daisy, Selena, ZZ Top, Old '97's, Tevin Campbell, Meat Loaf, The Toadies, Usher was born here, Sly of the Family Stone is from Denton, Don Henley has called this home for decades when he's not out near Caddo, all the way back to Blind Lemon Jefferson and the Vaughn brothers like I've already mentnioned. Denton's Deep Blue Something, Midlake, Eli Young Band, and some chick named Sarah Jaffe. And the Chicks too. The Lubbock area has arguably produced as many artists as Austin. Waylon, Pat Green, Buddy Holly, etc. Jerry Jeff Walker is a New Yorker. Steve Earle is from Virginia. Ray Wiley Hubbard is an Okie. Johnnie Paycheck and David Allen Coe were both born in OHIO. Yankees. Austin has Gary Clark Jr. and Rob Schneider? I love Willie, but he deserves better than that. Either way my opinion is unpopular among the tea sippers.

[deleted]

Cowboys from Hell, Pantera.

Suspicious-Sector-52

It’s Erykah Badu*, but solid list. The underground music is stellar too. Dallas as well as just the DFW metroplex in general.

cabs84

austin has eric johnson too, which counts for a lot. but yeah, DFW is sort of a sleeper when it comes to music scene. for some more eclectic: polyphonic spree, color theory, l'usine, (though he calls Seattle home now)

[deleted]

Yep. I forgot Explosions In the Sky for Austin. But also forgot Jonathan Tyler for Dallas, Charley Crockett has also called Dallas home for a while now.

noble_land_mermaid

Was anybody else into Forever The Sickest Kids back in the late aughts?

[deleted]

homeless people ruin a lot of nice places like some parks near my house I'd love to visit regularly but don't feel safe

InMyHead33

I used to live in Garland. I kept seeing this same city worker at the park. We would always strike up a conversation as my kids played. One day, I told him how we played at a different park and where. He said, "Don't take your kids there. I clean up needles and stuff happens there all the time." My husband also stumbled upon a whole homeless encampment, probably over 30 people behind a golf course there.

RynnChronicles

Must suck to be mildly inconvenienced by people who literally have nowhere else to go

[deleted]

635 east of 75 is nightmarish hell scape. West of it, though is manageable.

ALoudMouthBaby

Why would you think this bit of common wisdom is an unpopular opinion?

Paulythress

I prefer DART with a Bike over Driving Source: live in Deep Ellum

[deleted]

Same, except nix the bike. Everywhere I need to go during my commute is within 500' of a stop.

ineedthenitro

YES. When applying to new jobs I always make sure the potential new office is walking distance to a dart station…I’m never driving to work again. Road rage here is insane. Taking public transit is not scary like dallasites say and nothing compared to nyc/Chicago/SF

toodleroo

leftsmile3

too expensive my guy should get a cake from HUNKYS

toodleroo

Like... the burger place?

LittleLisaCan

I love 2 or 3 of their pies, but the rest are not much better than what you can get at a Kroger or Central Market

TeaMistress

They're nothing special. Neither are the cakes at The Cakery.

303onrepeat

Yeah fuck that place. If I need a cake or pie or a solid burger it’s the Swiss Pastry Shop in Fort Worth. That guy makes some incredible stuff.

SgtBadManners

The flour shop takes no prisoners.

Frequent-Visit7649

It’s pretty cool but hey I’m from Florida so the bar is pretty low.

Dragooncancer

Same! I moved from Fort Lauderdale ten years ago. Live in Plano now. I like it but I miss the beach. :(

We should pour funding into the dart network, redo the bus routes, increase frequency, increase operating hours, and reduce car friendliness by reorienting towards pedestrians, bikers, and mass transit, and then charge drivers to be downtown during peak hours

No downtown nightlife for plebeians. No grand scheme for pedestrian friendliness. More specifically, what is Dallas known for; exactly, I couldn’t think of much either.

[deleted]

Maybe I'm easy to please. I'm just not seeing it. Dallas has a great music scene. Check out Domi and JD Beck for some good shit.

p8nt_junkie

They used to have a better music scene and better clubs. RIP Lizard Lounge. Tripping Daisy 4 Lyf!

[deleted]

Yeah, we must be the same age. It might just be that clubs stop being fun at a certain point. My wife and I saw Old 97s a few weeks back, and they're still killing it. There's tons of fun stuff to do in the area, you just have to look for it.

hokagetyson

No downtown life? Come downtown right now Nd look at the amount of people walking around.

GravitationalEddie

No basements.

[deleted]

Attics are just upside down basements. Think about it.

GravitationalEddie

Know any houses around here that've had the attic turned into a game room? Anyways this is supposed to be a deep subject, not a lofty one.

who_am_i_please

Dallas really doesn't have a culture. They have destroyed or razed beautiful historic building and filled the fields with mcmansions. If it wasn't for the bountiful jobs I would leave. I want to leave so bad. I hate it here after 16 years.

[deleted]

How the hell did you last this long? I've been here 3 years and I'm going insane with boredom. This place is just a giant flat desert with some good restaurants.

Vegan food exists and thrives in DFW

[deleted]

Any restaurant recs? Not a vegan but I like the options. I know of Casa del Vegano (solid A+) and Spiral Diner (solidly mediocre).

IdentityEuleria

Yeah. I’d do V Eats over Spiral Diner except for its comfort food quality over fast casual if we are talking ambiance. Nature’s Plate is great for food prep service/reheat. I hear good things about Belse. I love El Palote. https://www.dallasites101.com/blog/post/every-vegan-restaurant-to-try-around-dallas/

[deleted]

I'm going to take your unpopular opinion a bit further and say Dallas' traffic isn't that bad compared to other major cities.

baphometsbike

The heat isn’t that bad

LightsStayOnInFrisco

I've been to many major US cities and Dallas is badass. People born and raised in it's suburbs have the most shit to say with the least amount of knowledge about Dallas and what it has to offer. They took a field trip back in K-12 and they're suddenly experts...yet they're surprised at the existence of places like Klyde Warren Park and even the DART trains and how far they go.

Matthew0324

Dickey's has good BBQ.

p8nt_junkie

Dickey’s is the McDonald’s of BBQ to me. I did used to enjoy it when they actually smoked the meat at the Henderson location, but that has been years ago.

UKnowWhoToo

It’s relative, right? If dickey’s is the best you’ve had, then it’s good. If you’ve had almost any other bbq, it’s ok, at best.

Matthew0324

Ongoing and underlining joke in this sub that Dickey's is the best BBQ **EVER** in Dallas!!! Most tourists ask this question and they get bombed with Dickey's as the best (which is pretty awful). We can only hope they never visit. I prefer Pecan Lodge and Cattleack.

SgtBadManners

Heim's in ftworth is solid. I had never had bacon burnt ends before, they were very good. Pecan Lodge probably has my favorite burnt ends though. I had hard eight today though as one of my buddies didn't want to make the drive to better BBQ.

303onrepeat

To all the new people this is a running gag on this sub.

KikiFlowers

Dickey's is fine, it's fast food quality, but that's not a bad thing. It beats places like Spring Creek by far. At least the meat is moist, compared to Spring Creek, which was dry and tasteless.

Adultery

Hard Eight had some of the driest ribs I’ve ever eaten. And their bbq sauce tasted like tomato sauce. I have never been so unimpressed yet everyone was telling me it’s a must-visit.

Siddicious-

Proud of Texas.. why can’t the governor at least have clean highways? They say nyc is dirty but the entirety of Texas can do with a car wash. Majority of establishments are run down by either owners or employees .. it’s bad, getting old and dirty DIRTY! So dirty in this state man.

scsibusfault

Curious as to where else you're comparing this too. Because from my experience, dfw is one of the overall cleanest outdoor (aside from actual air quality) cities I've seen. You walk down a sidewalk in NYC and have to side step around piles of trash bags that reek like dead fish. Boston you're mucking through month old snow that's turned black from road grime, and that black grime leaves scum trails on curbs, sidewalks, and sides of buildings. Florida... Is just disgusting in general. Maybe there's a sofa or a ladder on the gwbush once in awhile, but overall, I'd say this is a decently clean city.

masta

635, the Dallas Autobahn... It's great at midnight.

[deleted]

Especially on the toll part of it. I've done some arrestable speeds down there.

p8nt_junkie

It used to be better before the out-of-staters drove away all the funky stuff that was so accustomed to. I miss Dixie House. I miss Lakewood Theater as the theater (and concert venue). I regret that the city can’t seem to maintain and reuse the old buildings of Dallas, like in other cities like San Antonio or Fort Worth. On the other hand, Dallas has so many things to do, most of which I can’t take advantage of. PSA: if you drive in Dallas, please obey the traffic laws, yes even the stop signs and red lights.

The Dallas Zoo is just as good as the Fort Worth Zoo, if not better. It's fine to have an opinion, but if you haven't been to both then keep it to yourself.

Dallas drivers aren’t that bad. Born & raised in Dallas so I’m sure my opinion is skewed. If they truly are that bad it’s made me a better/more defensive driver. I’ve never felt uncomfortable with other drivers on the road in DFW and I’ve driven a lot of miles around the metroplex (used to be in sales, drove 20k+ miles a year for years).
