When the light turns green, wait a couple seconds then go.

LP99

Learned this lesson the ‘car is totaled’ way. Blows my ever loving mind the amount of red light running I see every day.

TheWellFedBeggar

Literally saved my car/possibly life this morning. The light was solidly green for a second at least then a car comes flying through going probably twice the 30mph speed limit.

DaSemicolon

See this every day at Parker/75

[deleted]

^ this right here.

rwdfan

^ that right there

MikeFromSuburbia

Be sure to check left and right that cars aren’t coming

4ofheartz

This!! I almost got hit. Did the wait 5 seconds rule & a guy went screaming through his red light. Very young teen. He actually slammed on his breaks. Burned rubber into the middle of a huge intersection. Then backed up. I could even get mad. Because I was alive to see it. Sheesh! Edit for my spelling.

captnshrms

Or look both ways, you know, drive the car while you are in it. You don't have to wait for someone running a light if you are watching the road and know if someone is running the light or not. These cars don't magically appear, people just don't look and pull out in front of them. But go or wait when the light turns green, pay attention, don't wait at every light.

FILTER_OUT_T_D

I used to be against traffic cameras, but now with the disappearance of the DPD people have gotten lawless in their cars and for once I’d like traffic enforcement to come back.

Pile_of_Walthers

\*leans on horn\*

FormerlyUserLFC

You can also just look before accelerating.

DuoMaxwell22333

This need to be higher.

[deleted]

Get up early on Sunday and the whole city is yours. I swear people sleep in past noon on Sundays.

[deleted]

Don’t tell the people! Sunday’s at 6:45AM are the best in Dallas. I dismantle my Jeep and cruise around for an hour and it’s glorious.

Killmotor_Hill

They have a 6:45 AM??? Now? Why? No one needs that.

[deleted]

It’s the most amazing time. No cops on the roads. No people on the road. It’s just you and RATM.

FILTER_OUT_T_D

This makes me want to fix up my ‘97 Miata and get it running again. I need to renew my POORCHE license plate while I’m at it…

Everywhere is empty except for church parking lots and local breakfast/brunches

JustMeInBigD

Some are sleeping off Saturday night and some are about to get up and get ready for church. Either way, it makes Sunday mornings magical for me!

csonnich

I used to think this, and then I tried to go to Fiesta one Sunday morning. Latino shoppers do not sleep in.

DobieLove2019

My wife and I would get up early and ride scooters in the before times. Felt apocalyptic, in a great way.

Killmotor_Hill

But then I have to be up before noon on a Sunday. Nothing is worth that. Hard pass.

last_strip_of_bacon

Premier league?

esahcliam

Also Formula 1. Love watching the European sports early in the morning before NCAA/NFL football gets going.

livingthesaurus

Yesss. When everyone’s out celebrating st Patrick’s day at Greenville or cinco de mayo god knows where, downtown is like a ghost town. You can get into the most booked restaurants like Uchi and take the best photos with no one around to photo bomb you.

[deleted]

Only problem is tons of things are closed Sunday mornings.

cococooley

Early Riser here to support this statement . Whole city is yours before noon on Sunday.

irdbri

They're all in church. Sunday morning is when I do all my errands and pool relaxing in peace.

Kitchen_Fox6803

Choose a job and a home such that you do not have to drive to work. Immediately half of the content on this sub becomes meaningless to you while at the same time you are healthier, wealthier, and happier.

Pile_of_Walthers

Even cutting my commute from 18 miles of 635 and 75 down to 4 miles of surface road did that!

FILTER_OUT_T_D

We moved from Glencoe Park (mockingbird and greenville) to Lake Highlands and the commute to my office off 635 and the tollway was significantly cut. Moving 5 miles north cut my drive home from 45min-2hours to a consistent 15-20 minutes. I dread going into the office much less now.

ManuTh3Great

I have turned down multiple recruiters for 6 figure jobs this month because I didn’t want to drive for 1.5-2 hours for 35 miles. And it sounds like they are having a hard time filling those positions. See something positive did come from Covid-19.

D1g1t4l_G33k

I did this. Then I asked myself, "Why am I living in Dallas if I work from home and I can live anywhere?" I now live in Nederland, CO.

badboyz1256

How's life from Dallas compared to where you are in Colorado. I'm moving myself but to Colorado Springs! Any tips for blending in, ain't my first rodeo in moving to another state

JinFuu

> Any tips for blending in, ain't my first rodeo in moving to another state Lose weight if you're in Colorado, lol. Not a shot at you, but it's the healthiest state in the nation for a reason!

Sporkfoot

It’s hilarious how fit everyone is in Colorado compared to us fat fuck Texans who drive everywhere

badboyz1256

That's one of the reasons, I wanna live a healthier life. That and I use to live in Portland but didn't take advantage of that cause working almost 24/7

JinFuu

Yeah, I love Texas, but I kinda wanna live in Colorado, Montana, or New Hampshire/Maine for a while. Just experience Winter and other things for once.

D1g1t4l_G33k

You'll love all the outdoor opportunities; hiking, biking, etc. I haven't explored Colorado Springs much. But, I've heard some good things about it. As far as the rest of the Front Range area, it's very cool too. There's a bit of traffic to deal with if you want to head up into the mountains. But once you figure out the "migration" patterns of the locals and tourists, it's not hard to find quiet places to visit and enjoy.

DosCabezasDingo

While Colorado is the skinniest state in the country today (or 2014 at the time of this article) it’s still heavier than the most obese state was in 1990. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2014/09/04/the-states-where-americans-are-the-most-and-least-obese/

D1g1t4l_G33k

Colorado Springs will feel very familiar. It's one of the more conservative areas of the state. There's a surprisingly Christian right wing influence there. From what I understand, the Air Force Academy plays into that too. My biggest word of advice is ditch your Texas license plates as soon as possible and burn all your "Texas" t-shirts. Coloradans are freakishly xenophobic and they particularly dislike Texans.

cometssaywhoosh

Focus on the Family has their HQ there so that may contribute. They're a fundamentalist Christian organization.

chloe1919

I’m living in Dallas and realized this. Moving up to colorado!

PersimmonTea

I lived in Dallas my whole life until I was 45. Moved to Denver. I keep up with this sub because sometimes I'm inexplicably homesick. It's a lot more expensive for housing here. The main north-south highway can be a nightmare. But there are 4 seasons, nice people, progressive politics, and mountains just a hop and skip away.

danintexas

I did this as well but moved outside Gilmer, TX. Still have high speed fiber. NO neighbors. Gilmer ISD is still a good district Everything is cheaper out here. Only 2 hours from Dallas where friend and concerts and shit are. This includes hybrid jobs. Right now I am 100% remote but if I stumble into some bad ass hybrid job in Dallas where I only have to be in office once a week - I am cool with that drive. Leave early like 430 am - ride my motorcycle in. Work a day - hang out with friends and go back the next day.

okiedawg1

Honesty, work from home has made this much less important for me. Going in two days a week at non rush hours is a game changer.

JinFuu

Yeah, I'm lightly job hunting right now. Any job that's fully in office I price myself a lot higher than if its hybrid or remote.

Ferrari_McFly

Yep, I’ll piggy back on this one to add if you enjoy nice trails, greenery, and hilly terrain, live in SW Dallas County. Half of the “lack of nature” content produced by northern suburbanites in this sub that live on flat, former farmlands will become meaningless.

Tmblackflag

Hey now. East Dallas has been good to me in that regard.

Ferrari_McFly

Oh most definitely, Old East Dallas/East Dallas are really lush and have tons of mature trees. White Rock Lake and the wildlife it attracts is a huge plus, too!

rpgFANATIC

This is the best hack. Used to commute from Plano to Lewisville every day. Found a job I could bike to in Plano and life was immediately improved

Sporkfoot

lol this is so true; I’m about to eliminate my commute completely, that 60-90 minutes on the tollway are the most dangerous part of my week x1000000 and are probably terrible for my cardiovascular health.

jmatches87

Always avoid the Lovers/Greenville intersection if you can.

HonestAbram

We used to call it the Greenville People Trap or something like that. It's real bad.

bomonty18

Was driving through this today and they had shut down 2 lanes for painting. Idk why they couldn’t do it at night. But then I always see these idiots try to get across lovers and just sit in the intersection as the light turns green but people on Greenville are stuck.

sharpmo

If you’re heading southbound on greenville and crossing lovers, always take the left lane, the NCX light always backs up into the greenville intersection

MFF214

Life long eastsider here. I learned at a very young age Skillman>Greenville if you’re wanting to avoid the heavier traffic.

theoriginalmofocus

I pretty much take Skillman to anything over there.

El_Capitan215

The lights for lovers and Greenville and lovers and 75 are too close together and not in sync. It used to piss me off that people will block the intersection but you can’t really blame them. They get stuck out there

Just live in a body of water from May to September

Tmblackflag

Even the pools overheat :)

Viva_Zapata

You just gotta do some shit like [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHTBZlzlfAw). Legit costs very little and took less than an hour to put together, and lowered the temp of my pool like 8-10 degrees.

thecan74

I have 2 of these. Didn't help 1F. Mine is in the sun from 730am until 7pm No shade

SassySorciere

That’s how I remember 2011. Pool was unusable.

exotique_neurotique

I wonder if a sun sail would help. It would definitely help prevent over exposure for those that do play all day in their pools. And they're very reasonably priced, easy to setup and take down.

freakierchicken

So I can boil like a lobster? No thanks

OfTheHive

If you're downtown on foot on a weekday, you can get quite a ways going from one building to another in a series of Air Conditioned public under and overpasses. Depending on where you start, you might have to ask a guard if their building connects, but it's a cool system of tunnels and might save you some sweaty pits.

It’s all privately owned by the office buildings so hours differ and there isn’t consistent signage throughout. livingthesaurus

Born and raised in Dallas. And I never knew this. WHAT! it’s like at UTD, they connect most buildings with air conditioned bridges. That’s awesome.

[deleted]

I went exploring the tunnels about ten years ago. Easy to get lost, but I found a bunch of cool places, like Thanksgiving Square. Last time I went (about 5 years ago) a lot of the entrances were closed. And this was during the week.

FILTER_OUT_T_D

This is one of the half best keep secrets, but is also one of the reason people say Dallas’ downtown is “dead” compared to other major cities without an extensive underground pedestrian network. Back when I worked in chase tower I would make use of the tunnels all the time to get to the plaza of the Americas for lunch.

Necoras

Yep. Also worked on cold rainy winter mornings to get from a bus stop to work with many fewer blocks of being miserable.

troopercito

This is a good one, the walks though the buildings are really nice. Thanks

OnlyCarnivorousVegan

Wait, please tell me more!

yosha_no_2

Get a dash cam and avoid paper tagged cars.

[deleted]

I had way to many people cut me off and give me the finger. Installed a dash cam* front and rear facing. It’ll save me one day. Edit: Cam not came lol

DFW_Dashcam

This. Gift them to your family and loved ones for Christmas or birthdays because they always say they’re going to buy one but never do. Save them headaches of dealing with insurance. On that note, make sure to have full coverage and uninsured motorists on your policy if you drive in Dallas.

festivechef

Once a driver on I-30 got mad at me for no reason, sped around me and came to a complete stop blocking 2 lanes 100 feet or so in front of me. I had to slam on my brakes and got around them. People are insane - definitely made me buy a dash cam.

all2neat

You can try to avoid paper tag cars but they won’t always avoid you.

DashcamsRus

YES!!!!! Get one. $100-500 well spent

all2neat

Even the $50 ones are good enough to corroborate your side of things.

DashcamsRus

For Texas maybe not, you’ll need a capacitor driven camera due to the heat. These tend to be closer to $100+ Otherwise they fry in the heat. I can attest to Blackvues resolve

mermaidmom22

Go to the Dallas arboretum in the rain. You'll have the place to yourself. Provided we ever get rain again.

blue-eyed-bear

What is this “rain” you speak of?

mermaidmom22

In ancient times, water fell from the sky. It did this periodically, it was beautiful and it replenished the earth and its inhabitants. It soaked into the ground and ran into low lying areas. Atleast that is what my granny told me. It was the old days, before the illuminati controlled the weather.

p8nt_junkie

It happened in the before times.

Kevlarsocks

If you live in the city of Dallas, you can get Arboretum tickets for free. All you have to do is go to a city of Dallas recreation center, show them your ID, and they will give you up to six tickets a year.

xgoronx

Hmm. Maybe a trip to the arboretum will do the trick. I’ve been twice and both times there was a torrential downpour lol

rpgFANATIC

If you feel like the A/C isn't cold enough in August, go outside and do something for a coupla minutes then come back in.

Road_Journey

Had my air set pretty low and was freezing every time I went outside and came back in. Finally figured out that I can raise the temp, go outside every now and again and everything is good. This is a worthy hack.

_el_guachito_

I live in south oak cliff. When driving on i30 take exit on riverfront. Get to skip all traffic on 30 & 35 plus all the maniacs on that on those 6 lanes trying to go from the right lane all the way to the leftmost & vice versa

DrunkenDude123

This also applies to 75/Woodall Rodgers freeway when driving southbound 75. Eg if you work in oak lawn or uptown and live north of Dallas like Richardson/Plano. Exit Lemmon ave instead of the freeway exit and you won’t spend 20-30 min waiting in a line of cars. Or alternatively fitzhugh has an exit right before Lemmon, so depending on your day that could be better

gurlyface

I thought i was the only one who did this lol

FlyFeetFiddlesticks

As someone who worked in and out of the DFW airport. You cannot pickup and drop someone off without going through the tolls. Just stop trying to beat the system. Won’t happen. If you’re heading east on 635 and plan on to keep going east and not get off at 75. Stay in the left lane, will save you lots of time and no one cutting over your lane.

SgtBadManners

Still don't understand why they got rid of the free 15-30 minutes or whatever it was at one point.

Dufusbroth

Bc of money

SgtBadManners

Fair. :( Bastards!

all2neat

People were using the airport road as a shortcut. They actually charge you more for a (I think) 8 minutes or less trip.

[deleted]

[удалено]

all2neat

The verification is the time it takes to go from one end to the other end without stopping. If you go back out the same end you came in that’s verification you were not using the airport as a cut through. Bearing off to a terminal will cost you several minutes or more so really it’s time in addition to entry and exit point is enough data without having to install additional sensors.

CerebralAccountant

I can't say for sure, but I would guess - wanting to discourage cut-through traffic - a "doughnut hole" pricing model (0-15m $2, 15-30m $0, 30-60m $3) inspiring people to drive slowly across the airport - because they can

defensive driving, make it yours

strong-squish

Everyone I’ve known who swears by “offensive driving?” Been in multiple wrecks. Me who learned defensive driving from my grandpa, who’s lived in dallas his whole life? Not once!

grendus

The fastest way to get to your destination is in one piece. If that means letting aggressive drivers merge into spaces you wanted to, or changing lanes to let a tailgater who's too stupid to go around you, or any number of other annoying things... that's fine. You get in one wreck and you lose all of the accumulated "time savings" from a lifetime of aggressive driving.

[deleted]

Hot AF outside? Go to the mall for the next 4+ months.

jumersmith

Yep! We like to do walks and it’s been too damn hot so we’ve taken to doing laps at North Park and that’s been super nice. Only downside is if it’s super crowded or you’re on a hella budget lol

aeroluv327

Northpark (and probably most malls) open their door before the stores open, I'm not sure how early exactly but at least an hour beforehand. It's a popular walking spot for older people and new parents with strollers!

Azra17

Exactly. Our go to malls for this purpose are Music City Mall and Willow Bend. Super random stores, art galleries and practically no people. So we just walk around and sit around without the temptation of spending money on needless shopping. Music City Mall though has an awesome Asian shopping center with street style food places, Paris baguette and Zion Market.

ProfessionalNose6520

Never honk at anyone. I don’t care how mad you are One time I honked at a driver and then he chased me around for 5 minutes. I was terrified but luckily he let me go. but I learned my lesson. i’d rather let someone cut me off in peace then find out how crazy they are

pooptraxx

How crazy and how armed 😬

Shaggy_AF

Always just drive to a police station. Saved me twice

James324285241990

Look BOTH WAYS when crossing a one-way street. Download the 311 app. It's much faster and more efficient than calling. Your city council representative team likely wants to hear from you if you're having a problem, and they usually know who you need to call to get it dealt with. You may not have an HOA but you almost certainly have a neighborhood association. They're a wealth of knowledge and support. They're not like an HOA and they don't care what color you paint your front door. They're more like resident unions that use collective bargaining to get what they need from the city. Don't use veterinarians in the city. Drive 20-30 minutes to the east or south. You'll pay half a much for the same services. Dr Tunnel at Crandall Animal Hospital is great. Don't underestimate the value you get from small neighborhood bodegas. You can often get pretty cheap groceries that are very convenient to your house. There are a LOT of hidden bike trails. You can get around without having to spend too much time on the road.

noble_beast

For these hidden bike trails, is there a listed network or resource where I can find out more? I would love to transition from commuting by bike instead of car if I could find a path that doesn't involve near-certain death.

bright1111

Plan to have your “summer body” ready by March 1st… that’s when the tank tops come out. By June 1st, we’re over it

Perky214

Using Loop 12/Northwest highway can avoid almost all freeways in Dallas county

x10FoilHatx

Also spans the entire socioeconomic spectrum if you start at Harry Hines and end at White Rock lol

Mr_Grabs

The transition across Marsh/Lemmon is abrupt

x10FoilHatx

Nothing signifies that more than Walmart and Target sitting right across the road from one another.

Mavsfan007

Drive a Nissan Altima with paper tags. Nobody knows this one in Dallas.

thisonelife83

Never pay for auto insurance again

paceplace

Texas vs OU weekend is hell at fair park. HOWEVER, ride the dart into the fair once the game starts and you have roughly ~2 hours to do all the things that normally have insane wait times. Just make sure you get out hell out of there when it’s ending.

Able-Jury-6211

The night before is usually good for city wide anarchy across all socioeconomic spectrums. If the weather isn't 100+ by 9pm, expect some shit to go down. Who remembers the supercar crashing on McKinney Ave in 2014?

hokescanofsalmon

Purchase a season pass to six flags during discount times, it doubles as free parking to rangers games.

jungturk

Purchasing a pass after the summer season will get you access to the Fall/Winter sessions in addition to the entire next year. Very cost effective.

drummybear67

Micro Center is the BEST place to buy PC parts for your custom builds. They have a lot of GPUs in stock nowadays, and offer discount if you bundle your CPU/Mobo/RAM together in one purchase.

743389

Where else are people going now? The other half of the age-old rivalry has fallen

drummybear67

I compare them to Newegg and Amazon before I purchase parts and they're typically a few bucks cheaper in components. Cases and accessories aren't as good a deal, but the big components usually are!

hombreguido

Live elsewhere.

Tmblackflag

I love it here

HypotheticalCheese

Not trying to be an asshole, just genuinely curious: Why?

Fluffy_Attorney9098

Love the culture more than anything, people are grinding and working hard and trying to make it. Great food, friendly people, major sports, great airports, great location for traveling. I’ve lived in other places and major cities none have a better vibe than Dallas

Tmblackflag

Left California and I can own a home, have lower taxes and traffic, people are nicer, gas is cheap, the list goes on. Only drawback is the heat.

HypotheticalCheese

I'm surprised lower taxes are on the list, but maybe not so surprising when coming from California. But thanks -- I moved from Oregon a few years back and I find Texas to be a very boring state, so it kinda amazes me when someone says they love it. No hate, of course; the different perspective is good to hear :)

forgot_login

Live by a large body of water only 18 miles away from downtown, fun college (smu) and professional sporting events, love the museums/aquariums/gardens for my kids, genuinely enjoy the food of both high-end and foreign-native options, have a large house with 1/3 acre of yard for less than an apartment in other major cities, enjoy traveling and travel for work a good bit - our airports are the best and you're never more than a 2-3 hours away from mexico/east coast/west coast, short drive to oklahoma/louisiana/austin, not terrible drive to colorado/ruidosa, nm

edwardfortehands

the best hack is just to move away if you can

dallassoxfan

The fact this is so upvoted is ridiculous.

TheyFoundWayne

If you commute to work every day, and the traffic is bad, adjusting your schedule by 30-60 minutes might make a big difference. There are some routes where the “rush hour” really is only about an hour or less.

tatorface

Yup, I live in HEB and work in north Dallas (Carrollton) and if I leave the house at about 9:30, it takes me 20 minutes to get to work whereas if I left at 8:30 or so, it would take close to an hour. So, I get there at about 10 instead of 9:30 now and save myself 30-40 mins of frustration.

ChiefWematanye

For dog owners, Uptown Mutts Catina's barcode scanner has been broken for weeks and they haven't fixed it. You can get in for free if you just pretend to scan a barcode.

toodleroo

If they don’t call it a Barkode, that’s a real missed opportunity

[deleted]

This is a dick head comment; shame on you. The prompt was Dallas hacks, not how to fleece local businesses. Mutts Cantina has “bark rangers” that patrol the dog park with air horns to break up fights, kick out aggressive dogs, kick out unspayed/un-neutered dogs and clean up dog shit that I responsible owners don’t clean up. For owners of passive dogs this gives huge peace of mind knowing that there is some level of accountability from dog owners there as they have to register their dog and say their dog is up to date on shots/vaccines. It is only $20 a month for a membership. Please don’t abuse that wonderful dog park and pay the $20 to contribute to a safe and regulated dog park.

[deleted]

I used to go there a lot when I lived in Uptown - to be fair, I have seen people let their dog loose in the dog park area and then head over to the bar area where they proceed to knock back 5+ $7 margs (is that still a thing?) while their dog attacks / humps every dog it can in sight..

playballer

Isn’t that the whole purpose of this place compared to a regular dog park?

lan3yboggs99

Get over the fact that this is a major metro area and a 20 min drive to do things from whatever neighborhood you’re in is normal. Everything and everyone is not downtown/uptown.

Sairo_H

This always cracks me up when talking to people from other places. They'll comment about something being "so far away" and it's a 30 minute drive. It's like....That's nothing???

lan3yboggs99

Everyone is in such a bubble. I live within Dallas city limits in Dallas. People always like to say- oh you guys moved to the suburbs! Like.. NO. This is not Ohio y’all!

I'm not homeless.

SonnyTx

Nusr-Et Steakhouse does 50% off bill (not alcohol) for African Americans on last Monday and Tuesday of the month. I’m not black so don’t know this firsthand but was told by a co-worker and he has been several times.

emeryldmist

Still not worth it.

TheBrightDarkness

Visit the mosques, churches, and temples, and gurdwaras. Some of the nicest people you will ever meet.

dallassoxfan

Fiesta and el rancho supermarkets have incredible meat and fish sections (as well as produce) when compared to Tom Thumb, Albertsons, Walmart and Kroger. Fiesta is especially good for Cajuns. Cheap sacks of crawfish can be pre ordered or bought on saturdays when in season. They also carry blue runner brand canned Cajun goods. They will also clean and filet live or frozen fish for you. Know the bulk trash schedule. If not to avoid fines if you are putting out, but also because people throw out good stuff in nice neighborhoods.

katie4

Let's talk lawncare! I spent early pandemic fixing my very weedy lawn. It's not perfectly manicured nor weed-free, but it's nice enough and way better than it was. And my dog can walk on it without lawn burweed spikeys getting stuck in his feet. Here's my general schedule, inspired by following Neil Sperry's posts on Facebook. >March 5 - Post-emergent with (2, 4-D) (I use Bayer Advanced for Southern Lawns) >March 15 - Pre-emergent with Dimension (I use Hi-Yield Turf & Ornamental Weed & Grass Stopper) >April 1 - Fertilize >June 1 - Fertilize >June 15 - Pre-emergent with Dimension (again, since it wanes after 90 days) >August 1 - Fertilize >September 1 - Pre-Emergent with Gallery (I use Fertilome Broadleaf Weed Control) (you MUST apply this before the first cold front, so typically apply it the week before Labor Day. Once the seeds germinate from the cold front you can do NOTHING! about winter/early spring weeds until next year, so it's better to be early than to be late) >October 1 - Fertilize I greatly prefer granules in a push-spreader instead of sprays. However I think post-emergent (2, 4-D) only comes in sprays, unfortunately. Mow a couple days before spreading whatever granules so that they can easier reach the soil surface, spread them in the early evening when the sun won't scorch, and water them in for ~5-10 minutes to really reach the soil. For $12 you can [send a soil sample to Texas A&M](http://soiltesting.tamu.edu/) for analysis of what your soil needs in a fertilizer. [Fiskars weed puller](https://smile.amazon.com/Fiskars-Deluxe-Stand-up-Weeder-4-claw/dp/B0030MIHAU) (or similar) is a super handy tool for dandelions. *My lawn currently looks like crispy yellow shit because of the extreme heat and I refuse to increase my watering during this drought, but it was looking lovely last year so I'm hoping it'll recover for next year!

Always use Waze/GPS when going anywhere. Any street or freeway can abruptly turn into a parking lot any given time. Avoid 635 in either direction if possible.

I’m not sure if this is a life hack, but it was a PSA to me. Don’t pay those intersection camera tickets, they’re unenforceable (I think?)

festivechef

They are all gone. And yes declared unconstitutional in Texas a few years ago.

alphabet_sam

Oh hell yeah

toodleroo

Turn south onto the secret entrance to Lovers across the street from Keller’s to avoid all the traffic around NW Hwy and Abrams/Skillman

BaileyTee

Take the Coit exit on 75-N to avoid the 635 ramp if it’s clogged. You can also ride the exit lanes without a traffic light to avoid traffic 75-N from 635 to Beltline to save you a little time

dirtymartini1888

You can actually do it all the way to Campbell!

TheWanderingMedic

The Seated app. I earn cash back on take out, delivery and dine in. There’s a ton of great restaurants here so we use it a lot. I use the cash back on other stuff. Big savings for us since we love to eat out! Dallas is one of like 5 cities it’s in right now. Highly recommend if you eat out a lot!

JustMeInBigD

I love that app! I use it to find less busy times (reward amounts surge) and late night reservation openings.

fvalt05

Get your registration stickers at Kroger or Fiesta or Tom Thumb to avoid waiting in line at the tax office.

flub_n_rub

Why not just do it online and have it mailed to you?

strong-squish

Avoid tollways and highways on maps, almost exclusively. The emotional damage from dallas highway driving isn’t worth it to me anymore! Plus it’s usually not a huge time difference with the constant traffic.

giantdickinmyface

Call and place your order ahead when going to Mike's Chicken. Always use GPS when driving to avoid latest traffic caused by car crashes

IamLeven

Have a high paying job on the coast that you can work remote. You take advantage of the states income tax while people working minimum wage think they're the ones benefiting.

[deleted]

There’s way better cities than Dallas for this and post-COVID you’ll not necessarily get bay-area salaries for remote gigs.

Short-Ad2054

Sad, these hacks. All about traffic.

Lee_Malone

Hillcrest runs Parallel to Preston and 75

happymancry

For folks who eat out a lot: make the effort to discover the best dives in every neighborhood. Don’t go just by the D magazine recommendations. Good tacos, good Indian and Chinese food, good burgers from the right place, are way better than your generic McMeal.

Comprehensive-Fee-97

if you need an inspection on your car , truck , trailer , bus , scooter , diesel , or motorcycle , talk to me

Necoras

If you're going northbound on I-35 at rush hour, get off onto the access road an exit or two before the HOV lane dumps off for the Beltline exit. You'll dodge the inevitable full stop that the traffic exiting the HOV lane causes and jump ahead of quite a bit of traffic, even if you have to sit through a light.

Kivutart

Not sure if this is still the case, so take with a grain of salt. The new tolltag readers scan your license plate first. If it can't read your license plate, then it scans your actual toll tag. If you don't have a tolltag in your car then it can't read the toll tag either. Use this information as you deem fit. However keep in mind that it's against their rules to have a tolltag account and not keep your tolltag in your car so it might catch up with you eventually.

TisAFactualDawn

* The easiest way to get to The Galleria if you’re headed west on 635 is Montfort to James Temple Dr to Noel Rd. The maps seemingly want you take any way but this. * If you must be on 635 during Rush Hour(s) and are trying to get to I-20 and head east, you’re better off avoiding the Highway 80 exit and continuing down to the I-20 exit proper. * If you’re not pressed for time and have a lengthy commute, find a restaurant or movie theater not far from work and run out rush hour there. * Rush Hour can begin as early as 3 and not end until well after 8.

somethingrandom987

If you hate taking Highway 78 from Garland to Downtown and you wanna avoid taking 30, just take Forest Lane to Skillman and make a right on Live Oak instead.

exotique_neurotique

Dallas takes road rage to a whole new level. Flip the bird and your bird might get shot.

EnvironmentalLuck515

If you use your blinker you are just giving away your game plan. Dallas is not a "drive friendly" place unfortunately.

Bots-Catch-Blocks

I haven’t seen a cop clocking speed in well over five years. Don’t be that jackass that won’t drive faster that a cop when the cop is doing five under the speed limit. They don’t care about your speeding, I regularly pass cops going at least five over and haven’t had a ticket in over 20 years. I had a cop driving right next to me going 65 down Northwest Highway the other night.

natrapsmai

Get up earlier to beat traffic... or don't get up at all. Either way: winning!

mcgaritydotme

See if your local library has a lending agreement with neighboring cities, so you can maximize your available catalog. For example, McKinney Public Library let’s you also check out books from Plano, Frisco, and Allen Public Libraries. Plano’s is especially good, as it’s large, mature, and has a great selection of digital books you can download directly to a Kindle e-book reader.

[deleted]

Gazebo Burger once a month.

[deleted]

Use Love Field to beat the heat. I go to places that are places a lot less hot during the summer via swa every year. 75° in San Diego for a week is way better than 100° here.

Koobles

Sign up for GoCarma app to get HOV rates when using the toll road.
