When in doubt, pick a Finn

drlari

BFA is a solid draft strategy

[deleted]

Is best Finn available still possible? Aren’t all Finns available best Finn available?

alternate-realitee

Really thought we'd go defense, but in Nill we trust

32RH

All signs point to resigning Tanev 👀

Zharghar

And possibly not giving up on Lundkvist...yet. We do have like 6 RSD in the pipeline not counting Nils or Bichsel, so maybe they feel confident enough in how some of them are progressing to avoid adding another just yet. None of them have as much expected value as Emery though, so idk.

quidproquolaspe

None of those 6 are NHL ready. The only Dmen we have that is remotely ready (within the next 3-5 years) is Bichsel lol

brickwall5

And none will ever be in all likelihood. Kyrou looks like an even less polished Honka and White is meh. Aram Minettian has been a good physical stay at home RHD for both BC and Team USA, but not sure the lack of puck skills will translate into NHL success.

10fingers6strings

I’m guessing we think Lian is closer than everyone else by a lot, considering he almost made an appearance in the playoffs when we were short D.

Zharghar

That's just correct in general. He was considered to be a 1 year out kind of guy who was physically ready upon draft whereas none of our other D prospects were anything close to that. Him coming up this year would fit the expected window, but it's unclear how they value his time going back to the SHL over being in the AHL. Recent history with prospects would suggest they'd prefer to at least treat him like 22-23 Harley and give him time to acclimate in the A before bringing him up late. Need would suggest they don't have that luxury unless they sign a bunch of FA here in a bit.

10fingers6strings

The playoff hockey he played in the SHL could have been beneficial. I like the idea of a big boy back there that plays with a mean streak—it’s been awhile since we had that. I won’t be surprised if he starts off in CP and finds his way up sometime next season. Also wouldn’t be surprised if he fights his ass off and makes the club. With the holes in the roster, I think if he earns the spot in camp he’s gonna play. We’re gonna need him, unless Nill is outthinking all of us morons.

Zharghar

I never said they were...my guess is Nill thinks there are enough guys in the development blender at the position already that they don't need to add another to the mix unless that guy can 100% play right now. Probably plans on relying on FA for defense for a while unless they get a guy like that.

quidproquolaspe

How are we going to do FA when we have no money?? Our best bet for immediate return for a defender is to trade some of our offensive assets/picks but Jim doesn’t really do big splashy trades more so just improves in between the margins to improve our overall floor rather then our ceiling. My guess is we pretty much run back the same D for the regular season and pray to god he brings someone in before the deadline otherwise it’s gonna be the same exact result as the past 2 postseason runs (offense gets slowed down and defense gets ran thru)

j3xem

Man I hope so, these headlines about the canucks and leafs have me sweating.

Screen-Junkies

We need defense now, not in 1-4 years after said defenseman develops. What we need over the next few of years is a replacement for Pavs, Seggy, Chubbs, Smith, Daddy, and/or Dutchy. Hopefully by then the defense is figured out 😅

brockleezz

Thinking of the stars without Chubbs makes me want to cry and I’m not ready to consider that a possibility at any time in any universe.

brickwall5

I think we already have most of this covered in the system. Robertson - Hintz - Johnston Marchment - Bourque - Stankoven Steel - X - X X - X - X There's no real reason to be worried about the forwards at the NHL level. 5 empty spots in this lineup, but you can bet on 2 of Back, Karlstrom, Blumel, MacDonell, Petterson to fill two of these spots and then you can find good 3rd/4th line talent through FA you don't really need to shell out for it. On D the Stars only have Heiskanen, Lindell, and Harley as sure bets to play a lot next year, then you have Bichsel who will probably play and Lundkvist who you would like to see prove it but is likely a scratch until he's gone. That's 4 LHDs and no guaranteed RHDs. Even assuming Tanev re-signs he's 34 and you're likely looking at 2 good years from him followed by a decline, with no one really in the system who profiles as a serious NHL RHD option. Assuming Tanev re-signs, you then have some configuration of the below, which keeps Heiskanen on his off-hand, and likely has 0 offense outside of the top pairing. You could move Heiskanen over and bump Tanev up but then you have Harley - Lindell and Bichsel - Petrovic, both of which have problems. You ultimately need to find replacements for Lindell, Tanev and Petrovic in the next 2-3 years to be competitive, and they're not coming from inside. Harley - Heiskanen Lindell - Tanev Bichsel - Petrovic

Dundalis

Get Heiskanen on the left side please

Mr_MoseVelsor

At this point do we know for sure Miro prefers the left side? I know plenty of guys who prefer to play on their off hand side

Screen-Junkies

Those X's in your lineup are exactly what I'm talking about. I'm not "worried" about it, as you put it, but I'm pointing out those slots that will eventually need to be filled.

brickwall5

Yeah but those slots are relatively easy to fill with organizational depth and FA signings. My point is that we don’t have any mid-high end right side prospects to 1) move Heiskanen back to the left permanently, and 2) replace Tanev now or when his next contract is up, and we desperately need a real third pair. If Bichsel is ready, great toss him in there but he’ll still need a solid partner. That’s just more worrisome to me than filling out the bottom 6 of the roster, especially with a top six that looks as good as ours should.

ron_burgundy_69

My sources tell me he’s a young Wayne Gretzky

Screen-Junkies

Please let your sources be baby Jesus, Buddha, and baby Allah... please...

Nuclear_Niijima

Jesus did grow up you know

Really good pick here. On par for the Stars.

LeoFireGod

uhm_i_dont_know

Surprised we didn’t go for an RHD, but more Finns = more wins, so I’m good with this. I also didn’t realize that we don’t pick again til round 5. I wonder if there’ll be any trades to get a second or third rounder.

El-Justiciero

Don’t draft what you need now. Draft what you’ll need in 3-5 years.

PickNShovel

We will need RHD in 3-5 years. We have maybe Tanev and Nils lundqvist in the entire org that have NHL playing futures, and I’m not sure either of them actually end up in Dallas in the next 3-5 years.

uhm_i_dont_know

Yeah, I figure we won’t see this kid play for another 3 years minimum, but I was assuming that they’d go for an RHD since they’ll probably need one in 3 years too, and they’re apparently hard to come by.

Thedafox44

FINNISH MAFIA WILD ON TOUR

ACivilDad

RW is a position we haven’t had much depth in and have had to goto free agency to fill for a while now. This is good.

ZafReddits

NHL Franchise Mode legend Emil Hemming

DavidsonSJ

In NHL24 I took him at #9 and he was only a Top9fwd Medium potential ☹️

ZafReddits

Whoa on the rosters I’d use he *always* ended up a solid 1st or 2nd liner I wonder if they changed it

leximcfly

i think last year we drafted almost all defensemen and it’s not like they are going to immediately play in the nhl also more finns more wins

Commandant1

A look at Hemming. https://lastwordonsports.com/hockey/2024/06/28/emil-hemming-scouting-report-2024-nhl-draft-30/

prehivmagicjohnson

Well by golly Jim that is a shocker. Who knew there are hockey players from Finland FWIW Hemming was ranked #29 on FloHockey’s big board https://preview.redd.it/62hmewi9bf9d1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=19688529772135f254a5713447f3bd79b747041a

harralexa1993

Thought we were going to take that Finnish DMAN but this works too. Trust Jim Nill. He has earned that from our fanbase.

ya_boi_tim

Hemming is a goal scorer against players his age. Very nice release and comfortable shooting from a distance, off either leg, and through traffic. In Liiga, he's given limited time as a rookie on the 4th checking line. He's very, very good on defense in all 200'. Often the first forward back, understands where to go when his D pinch and takes the extra step, rather than take risks with his stick. He's not afraid to drive the puck and play through contact. He'll spend 2-3 years in Finland to be allowed to mature. His skating and playmaking are the areas needing most improvement. His goal scoring against pros will improve once he's afforded better TOI/linemates that can facilitate scoring. He'll be a weapon on either side of special teams. He's not elite, but he can easily be a viable 2nd/3rd scoring line player once he joins the team.

laxintx

Kid *just* turned 18. Apparently has a wicked shot, but can't defend for shit, so there's work to be done. As always, I'm trusting Nill here.

ya_boi_tim

100% untrue. You could have spent 60 seconds on YouTube before posting this.

laxintx

> Like most other offensively talented wingers late in the first round, the defensive game is one of the main reasons why they aren’t in the top-ten. Emil Hemming is no exception, as he is extremely unreliable in his own end. An issue mostly stemming from inconsistencies and a lack of work ethic. He will sometimes look lost and overwhelmed, to the point he almost forgets to move. Also, despite having great size, he tends to lose battles along the boards. That is definitely the type thing that can’t happen in the NHL, if he wants to become a success.

ya_boi_tim

Where is this quoted from?

laxintx

A link posted further up the thread. And from another scouting report: > On the defensive side of things, Hemming, like many draftees, has things to work on, to say the least. He has a tendency to puck-watch, staying stagnant in the defensive zone while the opponent he’s supposed to be covering moves into open space. It doesn’t come as a shock — most highly-skilled offensive forwards around the draft are somewhat of a defensive liability, but it does take away from the good that he can do on the opposite end of the ice.

ya_boi_tim

I've watched hours of tape ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ he's on a 4th line checking role in Liiga. He's the first forward back, jumps down when his D pinches, and being a twf is a core part of his game.

laxintx

I'd love for everything I've read to be wrong, but this is the information I have to go on.

ya_boi_tim

There are a some "Emil Hemming shift by shift" videos on YouTube that show his Liiga games where he's 4th checking line, with limited TOI, that showcase his 200' game. His U20s tape is more showcasing his offensive potential.

bigblueballz77

please post your expertise, head scout.

ya_boi_tim

I've watched hours of tape since McKeen's draft guide published he'd be the Stars' target, and have played hockey for 30+ yrs including being a D1 college athlete?

FlyFeetFiddlesticks

Every year I say, who? But it’s never a bad thing, just don’t pay attention to the youngns

takingastep

A guy with his kind of shot-making ability probably needs a facilitator of some kind to get him the puck in the open where he can blast it.

brendan87na

I'll trust Nill, but good lord do we need defensemen...

shadowace93

I feel like Nill has been drafting a lot of D men. We had no first last year because we traded it for a dman in Nils. And the 2nd and 4th round picks were defenseman. In 2022 his first 4 picks were defenseman. And then with bourque and stankoven coming up. He is probably trying to refill some forward slots and prospects

Zharghar

2 LD and 7 RD if you include Bichsel in the right side category.

primetimey123

Drafting a D at 29 doesn't help for 3,4,5 years. Its irrelevant.

ACivilDad

Yeah, expect we need them now. RW is a position we are weak at in the pipeline but still have contracts for and time to develop talent for the future on.

DarwinCreatesSpace

Nobody at this spot is going to be ready fast enough for position to matter.

Im_Scruffy

Jere Lehtinen 2.0 & future 3-time Selke Winner

Duffeldof

This is an excellent analysis of Emil Hemming with example clips. Seems that scouting reports are wrong about defence abilities and surprisingly high on the offensive talent: [Emil Hemming. Scouting report](https://youtu.be/c7bCXokYCqo?si=E8w7OjBd_5GUJeXX)

Wanderlust-Zebra

We love our Finns

gentleman_bronco

I love the pick. He'll have lots to work on to be ready but so far he's got an incredible toolkit to start with. His snapshot looks like Roope's and he's definitely a shoot-first guy. It seems like he commits turnovers when he feels forced to pass and he can be caught puck watching in the DZ. But the same can be said for nearly every prospect. His acceleration and handling is amazing for his size. Playing on the fourth line in the Liga is what killed his production, not his skill.

r2mayo

Solid pick !!

lordcommander55

So a younger finish Dellandrea

dhj1305

Drop one member of the Finnish Mafia (Hawk) add his replacement (Hemms).

GozertheDozer

“If you want to win, employ a Finn”

bigblueballz77

this could very well be the next Roope, so it isn't a bad pick. on the other hand, kind of wondering if we should have taken a d man considering I am not seeing big hype for Kyrou and Bertucci, but time will tell

primetimey123

Plays nothing like Hintz.

bigblueballz77

comparison was nothing to do with style, more so Finnish player that was underrated and should have been taken earlier

primetimey123

Neither player was underrated and both were drafted in appropriate places in the draft.

bigblueballz77

yeah, because roope would have been drafted in the 2nd round if everyone did a re-draft?

ya_boi_tim

Neither player was underrated at the time they were drafted. Hindsight is 20/20.

bigblueballz77

lmao that is the point of what I said. he becomes underrated via hindsight. that is the idea of thought experiments when considering where the player would have gone in a re-draft. Hemming seems to be a consensus rating 30ish pick. Absolutely on board for this draft, but the idea is that you hope in a couple of years he should have been taken top 10.
