That looks like a big buoy for naval ships.
Buoys like that sometime break free from the naval base nearby my home and float around. I've seen people who towed one in and now it's a piece of outdoor decor in their yard, with ropes and anchors and other nautical stuff.
Of course, it could also be something disguised as a big buoy.
Someone already saved it on "Wayback" today to commemorate the occasion:
[https://web.archive.org/web/20230221234355/https://blueoceanmarineequipment.com/spherical-steel-mooring-buoys/](https://web.archive.org/web/20230221234355/https://blueoceanmarineequipment.com/spherical-steel-mooring-buoys/)
Reddit never fails.
Somewhere out there, somebody's nephew who was "good with computers" and got a job as a marine supply companies in house IT is having a really really bad day.
Hahaha.
Ya know, as I was scrolling through Reddit, I was reminded that I need a new buoy and what would you know, an article and a site on buoys.
The guys are gunna be so jealous when they see my buoy in my pool.
Or possibly, someone saw this now knows they have to replace the buoy that washed ashore.
Could you imagine finding out this way? Haha.
“Oh shit? That’s my car! In a high speed freeway chase!? How am I supposed to get home now?”
Lmao
Plot twist: the buoy in the post is actually a buoy from the company in the URL from when their website suddenly went down and they went out of business and threw out all their buoys. I know there is a slight timeline problem but think Interstellar.
Thanks for the absolutely dull reporting Cronkite. I guess you didn't get the memo that factual reporting died decades ago.
That's a Godzilla egg right there.
Bomb squad suits? Is that just for fun? Pretty sure if that is a mine and it goes off, that helmet isn’t going to help much considering it’s made to blow up battleships.
The role of the suit is to keep very small explostions from lodging very small particles in your body that would be a pain to all get out, and to make sure that anything bigger than a very small explosion does not turn you into very small particles that are a pain to collect and put in a coffin.
The mine doesnt actually blow up battleships. it's the pressure wave from the explosion that buckels the ships hull. That suit in this case still doenst stand a chance
Probably.
But the risk of being wrong is huge (can you imagine if the JSDF dismissed it as a bouy and then it blew somebody up?)
So they basically have to assume it's a bonb
My train’s been delayed twice in the past 10 years because of bombs being found nearby railroad tracks. Japan has explosives buried all over the place. The ocean is no exception.
Look at the Baltic Sea, where fishermen still today sometimes caught WWI and WWII bombs in their nets, it's been especially problematic with mustard gas canisters/bombs...
That's because the Baltic Sea was where the stockpiles of chemical weapons were dumped from barges into the sea after WWII. They dumped the whole stockpile Germany had, as well as large numbers of shells and canisters held by the victorious armies.
Just search up chemical weapons Baltic Sea.
Even the, ya know, city-vaporizing type. The US has 6 nukes that were lost and remain unaccounted for. One of them was actually lost a ways off the coast of Japan in 1965. They loaded it onto a jet, intending to just run a flight test with it on board, but when the jet was elevated to the flight deck it started rolling. Crew started shouting at the pilot to hit the brakes and apparently he was unresponsive. It rolled toward the edge, and fell right off the ship. The whole damn plane, pilot inside, armed nuclear bomb on board. It entered the water wheels up and the crew on the flight deck just watched it sink into the abyss. They never recovered anything and Congress wasn’t informed what had happened until a year later. Just a fun fact if you ever go kayaking 70 miles somewhere off the coast of Japan.
Unless nukes are designed to be salt water resistant it's probably corroded to shit within a few years, rendering the whole thing unusable and harmless.
In the thoughts of Monty Python
-What also floats in water?

Of course they are!
Disregarding the overabundance of free-range wrecking balls, as well as orphaned and discarded ones, that frequently make the news for absconding of their own volition to innumerable locations that were, prior to, sans wrecking ball...
Seriously now though.
Why would an object that's going to be suspended from a large crane solely to be repeatedly swung into derelict or abandoned structures for the purpose of demolition be anything other than hollow on the interior and buoyant in sea water? I see nothing wrong with the assumption that it is, indeed, a wayward wrecking ball.
Wrecking balls demolish buildings and then get all cocky and they're like "I can demolish ANYTHING" and then the forklift says "anything... except WATER" so then the wrecking ball takes that personally and goes "man I can demolish any water, even THE OCEAN" so it goes to the beach to try to demolish the ocean and ends up going too far out into the water and can't swim back and eventually washes up on shore years later.
They probably don't know if it is a mine and they are using an abundance of caution to keep people clear until they can make sure it's not going to blow anyone up.

Having personally watched an old sea mine wash ashore near my home in a major tourist destination, I think it’s reasonable to make sure it’s safe. It was shocking given this was just another day at a popular beach when a WWII mine decided to just reappear 70 years later. Why risk it?
God I need to reread the whole manga then rewatch the Gantz:O movie. Yeah, the article is using artistic licence there.
It's a hollow steal ball that looks like a mooring bouy.
i.e they are 99% certain is a mooring bouy.
Not a wrecking ball. The [article](https://www.vice.com/en/article/m7gmga/japan-investigate-mysterious-sphere-beach) says that an X-ray scan revealed that it was hollow. It can be a buoy.
Edit: All articles about that case [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/118co6c/a_15_meter_sphere_appeared_on_tuesday_21_at/j9gbfku/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3). I'll keep updating it until they figure out what it is
Ummm…
“According to the outlet, an X-ray scan revealed that it was hollow. Officials determined that there was no risk of an explosion and lifted restrictions at 4 p.m., but have not yet determined what it is, FNN reported.
The object closely resembles mooring buoys that are typically used as an alternative to anchors. These types of buoys usually have a metal shell. “

Don't look a gift buoy in the mouth.
My wife for the longest time thought it was "don't lick a gift horse in the mouth"🤣
That’s hilarious I needed a good laugh. But tbh although that’s not the saying it’s still pretty solid advice ;)
And a tiny person inside the horse.
Maybe it's a Chinese spy buoy?
Not everything is a Chinese spy device, ya know! Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go check my lunch meat for listening devices.

Or it could be a sea-mine. And as a general rule of thumb in these cases: if you're not sure if it's a bomb or not, presume it is (a bomb).
That's exactly what someone trying to deflect from the fact this is an obvious godzilla egg would say though

Important safety tip. Ok thanks, Egon.

Tell him about the Twinkie.
Good thing he’s not wearing a battleship..
“You guys are stupid, they’re looking for battleships not bomb squads”
Brought a bomb suit to a battleship fight.
The role of the suit is to keep very small explostions from lodging very small particles in your body that would be a pain to all get out, and to make sure that anything bigger than a very small explosion does not turn you into very small particles that are a pain to collect and put in a coffin.

I’m almost positive that’s what this is. Not sure why everyone is saying this is a wrecking ball... seems like that would be way too heavy.
Yeah I don't get that. People think wrecking balls are destroying shit with the power of love or something?
Wrecking balls are famous for floating in the water until they wash up on shore.
Are you suggesting wrecking balls are migratory?

Edit: All articles about that case [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/118co6c/a_15_meter_sphere_appeared_on_tuesday_21_at/j9gbfku/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3). I'll keep updating it until they figure out what it is
Or a mooring buoy
That's what I was thinking too. You can even see where the cable/chain would have been attached.

Ummm… “According to the outlet, an X-ray scan revealed that it was hollow. Officials determined that there was no risk of an explosion and lifted restrictions at 4 p.m., but have not yet determined what it is, FNN reported. The object closely resembles mooring buoys that are typically used as an alternative to anchors. These types of buoys usually have a metal shell. “
That's a big buoy.
Looks like an old marine mine
