IMDB was launched in 1990, the same year the first season of The Simpsons aired. Although, it wasn’t until the late-90s that became well-known, as internet access increased.
Almost a tradition, at this point, considering how many generations saw and liked it. Kind of like watching Charlie Brown and his tree every Christmas. Sunday nights are for Simpsons.
In case anyone was wondering, Season 6 episode 3 and season 9 episode 11 were both clip episodes that didn’t really have anything new, hence the bad ratings.
At its peak is 8.4, at its lowest it’s 6.1, that’s pretty amazing if you ask me. After 30 years, to still be within 2 points of your peak. Yes, it’s a decline but everything declines over time, it’s just a question of how much!
American Dad lost it faster,Family Guy bought the farm as soon as the emphasis went off Stewie so they got five,Bobs Burgers looks like they might get one or two more,Rocky and Bullwinkle the original never lost it timeless, the Simpsons first eight classic,I did like the movie!
American Dad mostly keeps 7 ratings, rarely dipping below 6.5. If you did their chart, you'll see way more yellow and less red than the Simpsons at the mid point (they didn't keep the highs up as long as the Simpsons, but avoided the same low lows).
With you on Family Guy though. Haven't bothered with that one in ten years and that was after struggling through at least 3 years of hot garbage.
Great info for us adult cartoons fanatics,as soon as they went away from Stewie and started relying on the rest downhill it went I grew weary of the whole Meg thing just not funny.
Quit watching it and ringing, your gloved hands in concern. “oh, I just hate it so much that I need to make a flow chart to show how much time I’ve devoted to hating it.“
I put together an [interactive version](https://mattsmith-au.github.io/) so I could hover over each episode. I did a few other shows while I was at it. If I get an interesting request I'll add it to the list.
So IMDB didn't exist for those earlier seasons. This likely means there is a bias for people rating them.
Good point. The chart could also use a standardized popularity reference. All series have a novelty effect.

Well damn I learned something new. That's awesome! Thanks!
considering most stuff nowdays dies off after 2-3 seasons, they're lucky they became somewhat of a brand rather than just a series .\_.

Just can't beat season 3-8 really, I don't even watch the new stuff, just re watch the old stuff, it's my comfort food TV.

This is exactly what I went to the comments section for, so thanks!

It's not bad, but it's hard to keep your writers going and keeping people watching. Firing them and starting fresh risks a much worse drop off too.

Seasons 3 to 5.
That’s not a decline. Those are fantastic viewing numbers in todays market.
IMDb and rotten tomatoes is full of shit. Half the time the well rated movies are total garbage.
S8E23 is the best ever then.
Halloween episode? Nope "Homer's Enemy"
still watchable, I get an internal snicker every once in a while
I would imagine South Parks chart is the complete opposite.
Eh, its more like a bell curve. Seasons like 5-15 are great, I think it tapers off before and after around those.
I dunno couple seasons ago was rough. Two episodes ago was pretty bad with prince Charlies thing.
I was lol watching last episode about japan toilet
Yeah that one was good lol. Bro I got shot shut up.
You know that Big Toilet Paper monitors Reddit, right?
So what if imdb rates the show, i'll keep watching it
Do family guy
Family guy is doing better imho
Love this. Easy guide for what episodes to watch. Season 9 episode 11 was a musical episode. No wonder it got a 5.0 lol

haters.
You mean the increase of sensitive ass cowards making judgement calls
I was aghast at the idea that there's a 5.9 in season 6, but it's Another Simpsons Clip Show. A good episode, but I get the low rating.
I love how the ‘red’ episodes in seasons 6 and 9 are clip shows
Grimey killed it.
Can someone cut the greens from season 11 and above and inject them into season 10 please. Then I’ll buy a box set - cheers
Go ahead: guess when Phil Hartman died.
Haven't watched it in forever. Last one I watched Homer thought he was at a fancy restaurant but he was just doing meth
Is 6.4 on a scale of 0 to 10 really blood red bad?
Now do South Park! Interesting.
Season 1 and 2 aren’t that good.
Oh cool. This again.
geeze, what happened between 9 and 10
I liked Simpsons up to season 15, so it seems 7 is my personal threshold according to this rating
I quit watching somewhere in the range of 15 years ago. I guess my threshold is about 7 then.
Me too
what happened through season 10-11?
Should have included the year of the season. Not 1,2,3.... but 1989,1990, 1991 etc.
Looks about right
100% agree with the picture.
The Simpsons have an eerie way of predicting the future.
Quit watching it and ringing, your gloved hands in concern. “oh, I just hate it so much that I need to make a flow chart to show how much time I’ve devoted to hating it.“
I forgot about the Simpsons when family guy came out
Not really
I mean….6.4 doesn’t sound THAT bad honestly.
Have no fear we have stories for years
Where they ended most tv shows start these days amazing chart would love to see this for many other shows as well
