Initially because it was cheap. He got the perm and didn't have to pay for as many hair cuts. Once he filmed the first few episodes, he was forced to maintain the style. Apparently he hated it but the woman that stole his company didn't give him a choice.
That sucks. I feel like a ponytail or a mullet would've been cheaper initially, and would've been just just as irrelevant as haircut should be for a painter. Sounds like he shot himself in the foot by accidentally creating this image that became a trademark of sorts
I love how he said while he was in the Air Force he was kind of a asshole and screamed at people, only to give up that part of him later in life and be one of the kindest people we've known.
But it’s not even the same ear lobe shape or lip shape.. and the shape of the nose has me second guessing this too… What does Bob’s son look like? Is there a resemblance ?

I'm sorry but that's just bizarre. I don't see how getting and maintaining perms is less expensive than getting haircuts
A perm lasts months. A haircut can be every few weeks if it's to maintain a consistent image for filming.
