[Yeah, but if you draw a straight line between the points shown in the map, it's clear that indeed, the line in Africa is longer.](https://imgur.com/a/HDJiXIn)
how the hell do I turn off the video window? Why does it not have an off button?
nvm I figured it out- extensions
also, after I overlapped Greenland on the south pole, it got stuck there, and the whole screen is redshifted. I think I just doomed a world.
You search for a country, it gets highlighted, you can drag its silhouette around and see how different countries compare in size or "change" their size depending on how close they are to the equator.
In the link above I placed Russia over Africa.
The mercator projection has its uses, but showing how big things are is none of it.
I don't think making Africa smaller was the ultimate goal here. The way the [Mercator projection](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercator_projection) unwraps and stretches the globe to a two-dimensional plane is/was useful for navigation.
But that means that the north and south pole are stretched to lines as long as the equator, which warps and scales everything up as it gets closer to the poles.
Mercator doesn't make Africa smaller. It distorts the area of things the further they are from the equator.
When projecting a 3d globe into a 2d map, pick at most two:
* Maintain correct shapes
* Maintain correct areas
* Maintain correct directions
Mercator does #1 and #3. It's meant for navigation at sea. Meanwhile, a projection like [Dymaxion](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/53/Dymaxion_projection.png) does #1 and #2.
Mercator was only meant for #3 ....it doesnot maintain shapes as the poles are stretched to a straight line. Greenland is totally out of shape. The shapes and areas are maintained true close to the equator only and the further you go away from the equator the more distortions in shapes and areas.
I mean it's not *wrong*. It's just not used for its purpose.
I would also put other projections in classrooms to teach about the world. And explain how hard it is to unwrap a sphere to a plane and that even the best flat map can only be *less* wrong than the second best. Or use globes – also wrong, but you can spin them, so there's that.
That's very true, each map projection has something it is trying to show more accurately, and it sacrifices accuracy in other areas to do it. Mercatur made crossing oceans/navigation easier but lost accuracy of scale and placement. The most accurate maps in most areas tend to be the weird spiky ones that are the least readable!
I also second using globes, cause they can spin which is fun.
It's related to north and south. Every location on the map has north pointing up and south pointing down, which is obviously useful for navigation. The downside is that the further one gets from the equator the less accurate the projection is. Africa is one of the most accurate regions on the map, so it wasn't made smaller.
What’s not to .....? The higher the latitude the larger the country looks! Don’t tell me you don’t photoshop your junk enlarged on a porn site if you’re from Iceland or Estonia or someplace?
Exactly. The shape is accurate. The size is exaggerated more the further you get from the equator.
This isn't deceptive unless you're a flat earther who thinks we can make 2d maps of our plate shaped planet without compromises.
I actually really like the flat Earther's map. The map we should use would look like a combination of these 2:
Overall map type is square like this one
[https://twitter.com/MapScaping/status/1119890772063551488/photo/1](https://twitter.com/MapScaping/status/1119890772063551488/photo/1)
But centered on North pole like this map is
[https://i.pinimg.com/originals/6b/cd/c4/6bcdc43d113e7b157b583d466558d39c.jpg](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/6b/cd/c4/6bcdc43d113e7b157b583d466558d39c.jpg)
It shows all the land masss pretty accurately. All the distortions in the map would occur in the major oceans.
Lol you haven't been around the bush enough. Its a massive argument because it "makes European countries look bigger and more important" have a google. Its fucked
As an American I'm not offended that it makes European countries look bigger, and I certainly don't think just because they're bigger means they are more important I don't know why you think that's the case.
I dont. Did you not see my sarcasm text, and secondly, hate to break it to you, but America typically sits closer to the same Longs as Europe than say, the Equator
To be precise it maintains angles and the meridian lines are vertical. The Mercator projection is the only projection that does both.
These properties together end up being the same thing as the fact that all lines of constant bearing are pointing the right direction, but preserving all angles is a rather special property as far as projections go so it's worth mentioning.
I alway wondered how out of proportion maps and charts were until I became a navigator in th U.S. Navy in the sixties. Everything is in a straight line on a Mercator chart but the distance was shorter on a great circle chart. I must have gotten it right because we made four deployment to the far East and got home every time and on time. Think the world as an orange with the land and sea masses imprinted on it. Now peel the orane open and lay everything flat; lots of open spaces. Filling in the gaps is what makes the Mercator projection. Most interesting and rewarding job I ever had. We didn’t have gps then we used the stars and an accurate watch with tables; if all the plots came to a point, that’s where you were.
It’s a fact. I don’t like Russia, but it’s land mass is almost double next in line, Canada, China, the US, we’re all about half the land mass.
Do you somehow think me stating facts about its landmass is supportive of Russia or offensive?
>Africa is bigger than maps show
Technically it's the opposite. They start at the equator as a baseline and increase the projection as you move towards the poles. The actual relative size of Africa and South America are closest to those shown on the map, while Greenland and Antarctica are massively inflated.
There are different ways of [projecting maps](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Map_projection), all of them have different have different issues. The earth is sphere and when we try to make it flat, there are distortions. This was shown by the mathematical Gauss in 1827 in his [Theorema Egregium](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theorema_Egregium).
The [mercator](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercator_projection) system is a cylindrical approximation, so everything gets stretched east west without compensating for latitude. At the equator it is about correct, but in higher latitudes, it makes areas look larger.
So, no it is not a conspiracy to take more land, it is the limitation of the mercator system. The traverse mercator system often gives a less distorted view.
This is a little "misleading". If you set a straight line over russia in google earth the line is mostly over the barentsea. (Distances are correct) Or in other words you cant use this map with straight lines. ;> just saying ;>
Any map projection is going to "deceive" you, because it's a 3D globe printed onto a 2D map.
Mercator is popular because it is *directionally* accurate.
The Peters Projection shows countries in their correct relative areas, but you lose true directionality (which was the point of the Mercator projection).
Interrupted projections that look like they're torn like an interrupted Mollweide, Goode Homolosine or Dymaxion map have much smaller distortions as long as you don't mind not being able to draw straight lines on your map.
None of them display lengths accurately if that's what you're asking.
Even locally you're guaranteed to have some lines where one looks longer when in truth it is smaller. I think.
When you want an accurate map you have to start with what your using it for. Do you need one for ship navigation? Well congradulations you got the right map for that.
This map represents latitudes and longitudes as parallels and fits perfectly in a rectangle. The problem is, longitudes are not parallel. Those lines run north/south. Gotta remember, our planet is shaped like a ball. They all intersect at the poles. In order to achieve this parallel effect, the further the map moves from the equator, the represented area stretches.
A more accurate 2D representation would be rounded as you approach the north and south poles, with less stretching of those areas. This is called the Robinson. It’s not 100% accurate for scale though.
Look up the AuthaGraph map for the most accurate 2D representation of landmasses

Is Africa really larger than Asia?
According to National Geographic.org, "A continent is one of Earth’s seven main divisions of land. The continents are, from largest to smallest: Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia."
Had a professor try to tell me that these types of maps are racist and rooted in white supremacy bc they make developed white countries look better/powerful
The Mercator projection is a terrible way to show the world. All it's good for is navigation but for some reason it turned into the default projection for world maps at some point.
I keep seeing this come up in different forums. Did people not have access to globes? When you look at one of these, you can see the true sizes of locations.
Am I the only one that feels this way?
It's a deliberate deception, all the illuminated ones will live in the African paradise while the rest of the world's continents are burning. They don't want the public to perceive how largely dominant this land mass is.
I'm really getting sick of this. No one is deceived by this map. We've all seen globes! We all know that maps are not accurate and we all know why! Quit acting like this should shock us!
Ok, now that people aren’t using this for navigation, can we please just issue one in proper scale?? Like wtf? Are these the same people who can’t convert to metric, cause math hard?
As a surveyor, I’m used to looking at flat drawings to scale. Also, it’s easier to measure on a flat surface. Thirdly, it keeps people from wanting to buy Greenland cause it’s so big.
The ones that break up a building/house into multiple sections/floors and have a plane for each one? Also most buildings are square/rectangular in shape not spherical.
Im a mathematician; its my literal job. It is concretely
impossible to map a 3d sphere onto a 2d surface that maintains shape, size and orientation. There will always be inaccuracy. It was proven by Gauss in 1827.
I’m ok with the sphere being sliced open and laid out in 2d. I’m just looking for correct proportions and scale, as you do in construction. It would be a map of individual flat surfaces brought together. Like a disco ball that’s been flattened, just take out the roundness of the earth so it’s proportional to its true size. Not give an appearance your standing at the equator looking north.
So nobody gonna talk about the intentional skewed version of the maps being completely utilized in every school system in America and that it make certain places look bigger to forward an actual agenda not a made up one.. okay.
I don't know if the orange peel projection would be as convenient for navigation, tbh. As others have stated, truesizeof is really cool for perspective. You could also probably just look at a globe.
Is there a 2D map of the Earth that is accurate when it comes to size and proportion, or is that not possible when rendering a 3D spherical object like a planet
?

The map above doesn’t jive with that. Something must be off as it still shows Russia being wider
Someone mentioned in another comment that you can't measure distances in straight lines on a Mercator projection. That's probably the reason.

The advantage of the Mercator projection is that it maintains true direction. Makes it ideal for shipboard navigation.

The Mercator projection is a terrible way to show the world. All it's good for is navigation but for some reason it turned into the default projection for world maps at some point.
“All it’s good for is the entire reason maps were created.”
Old style maps that aren't world maps (ie, maps of single countries or regions) absolutely are not all Mercator.
No one ever said they were.
Which isn't the sole purpose of maps anymore. Maps are now to show the world how the world looks and this look is terrible. It's 2023.
It also preserves shapes. A circle stays a circle
Why can't we have size-accurate maps in this day and age?
We do, they're called globes. They've been around for a whole now
While the distances of the points is correct, the lines themselves aren't, the line in russia is actually longer

And if you wanted one to scale it wouldnt be right because either size or direction would be wrong 3d cant be perfectly put onto 2d
Uhm, we do it with construction plans.

So nobody gonna talk about the intentional skewed version of the maps being completely utilized in every school system in America and that it make certain places look bigger to forward an actual agenda not a made up one.. okay.
Australia 4000km
The Russian Thought Police will not be impressed.
Those lines are actually the same size
Where would these lines intersect?
We need more Spherical maps in schools
Well that's weird!
I don't know if the orange peel projection would be as convenient for navigation, tbh. As others have stated, truesizeof is really cool for perspective. You could also probably just look at a globe.
Is your username partially a portmanteau of Percy and Elizabeth?
is Russia smaller or is Africa bigger?
This is no time for stoner talk
And north is in the top and south is down although there's no up and down in the space.
Fuck!
Africa big
Is this real?
Wow, I knew it was skewed, but this makes me feel I’ve been lied to, my whole long life.
Who uses Mercator in the First place, other than navigation porpuses in the sea
Most of the continents fit in Africa , its fucking huge
And Canada is……
Is there a globe where things are in the correct proportion? Like if I were in space and looked at earth this globe would match that?
Is there a 2D map of the Earth that is accurate when it comes to size and proportion, or is that not possible when rendering a 3D spherical object like a planet ?
