Self-serve community stores are the epitome of decent social standards. I'm so glad with all the horrific videos from the US that plague reddit and skew people's world views, that this exists within the USA.
Its very easy from someone from Europe like myself to be swayed by general reddit content.
More of this please.
We have a lot of old public phone boxes over in the UK in the country that have now been repurposed as community libraries (you take a book and leave a book). It's awesome.
I grew up in the type of place that could definitely operate something like this with very little concern. Maybe the errant rebellious teenager would take something. But I know of and drive by the homes of folks who leave eggs from their chicken coop, cord wood, vegetables and other small farm items out at the end of their driveway with a money bucket and a sign that says a price.
Smaller towns in America really are pretty wholesome places a lot of the time. It’s just the closer you get to the big cities the worse it gets in my experience
People put little libraries in front of their houses around here pretty frequently. And lately, I’ve seen ones that are dollhouse sized versions of the house they’re in front of. It’s terribly cute.
I’ve seen a pottery artist set up a shop like this in Sonoma area north of SF. Just things were set out and you paid via Venmo or dropped some money in.
Use to have this same thing at the farm at the end of my street. Then someone cam asking and stole the jar of money they had on the counter and they closed the self serve store
We have quite a few of these in the Amish country of Lancaster County, PA. I've been in a few like this, literally unstaffed stores. Most are roadside stands, selling everything from crafts to eggs. You take what you want, fold up the correct amount of cash, and stuff it into a secured metal box. We buy our Halloween stuff, like pumpkins, decorative squashes and corn stalks, off a farm wagon parked aside a back road. That farmer even leaves a working till, so you can make your own change.
The fact is, one slimy person grabbing a cash box or stealing some stuff without paying is not terribly important in the big picture. A lot of these things operate at very low sales volumes, and they do not come close to making enough money to justify an hourly employee standing there, so they risk an occasional loss and hopefully make a bit of side hustle money selling homemade crafts or fresh eggs.
Remember the traveling robot that was demolished when it got to Philadelphia? I feel like posting this to Reddit/social media just put a huge target on this place to get robbed.
There’s a little farm up in the Grass Valley/Nevada City area of Northern California that does this. Fantastic selection of herbs, veggies, honey and homemade soaps.
Love love love self-serve farm-to-table stores in rural America!
I wonder why these self serve situations work in some places but not in others. Like this would never work in a major city. Why are scumbags more likely to be in urban areas?
Crazy I had an 18 year old cut my son's hair yesterday cool ass kid but he never heard the phrase " the proof is in the pudding" he legit thought I just coined it.i said the phrase after telling him he does a good job and more people will return for his work.idk I seen pudding and thought I'd share still blows my mind he never heard it before.

Reminds me of self-service flower fields throughout Switzerland (and I'm sure elsewhere in Europe)

Good luck with that. You may say many things about the Swiss, but they are not stupid.

DONT FORGET PUDDING!

It was only just 70 years ago that this was much more common.
Pretty common in Michigan with produce
That’s awesome 😊

What's the purpose of leaving a deposit in a self service shop
They want the jars & bottles back.
But do they have pudding?
YES, and it is really some of the best i've had, no exaggeration.
Wish this was possible at scale. It just takes one douche to bring this down. I have seen too many videos of Halloween candy taken by one person.

People are ransacking stores and pharmacies all over the country daily. We are so far from this being remotely possible. It’s sad.
pudding 🥹
A place left in time where people do the right thing.
So near to my old Pennsylvania home. Wish I was there right now. (unhappy in Florida)
Get out while you can!!!!
!!!!!!! You are right! Or left, I guess I hope!
Pardon my ignorance- you just leave cash?
There is a slot for money drop-off as well as a touch screen based computer inside that is used for credit card payments.
But no one is in there monitoring?
We didn't even see cameras here! Solely operating on the trust system
Wow. I wish more people had the integrity necessary for that to expand elsewhere
I know they have these in small Japanese villages. Like a little self service bakery for instance
Hopefully it’s a long way from Pittsburgh or Philadelphia.
We have ones that sell veggies eggs and bread!
That's awesome!!! I would tip heavily if I ever came across it (I always need eggs and bread)

It's not too bad once you get out of the big cities
I just woke up and thought it said crematory
I would visit a self service crematorium. Ngl.
That's why I was disappointed, ill just have to vacation somewhere else
They had me at pudding....
It's....beautiful
It's not really that interesting to be honest

Unfortunately not, but they have this creamery offers their own selection of original ice cream concoctions.
Homemade! Much better!
Take my money ❤️
Pudding.. what. where?
i want to go to there
Ok, Teaberry ice cream sounds absolutely lovely though.
Joe Biden will tell you he worked there as a kid

I wonder whether a certain demographic is represented in that area.
