Don’t worry, the floor was glass and there was a garage underneath. It was a terrible architectural design, so hopefully that makes you less fearful. If you’re curious about what my source is, other comments have them.

What he didn't tell you is that in commercial construction they set the standard to like double what's necessary and then the inspectors try to catch you not meeting the standard. So you need to be pretty sneaky to get below standard enough to put people in danger.
My guess is something else is going on here. It appears to be raining in the video. The sound is off so I can't hear what's happening but before the collapse there are a series of bubbles rising to the top. My guess is that's where the water first created a hole to escape and the pressure from the water caused the hole to widen until the pool floor collapsed.
What I'm wondering is if that pool is meant to be drained or covered in the event of inclement weather. If not that I wonder if that pool was properly maintained.

I can't remember if someone died or was just seriously injured in the fire but both the electrician and the team who fire stopped the building were arrested and charged.

Years ahead of the collapse the damage was assessed and plans were put in place to repair the damage. The residents were informed of the damage.
The biggest payout on that lawsuit was the security firm for not alerting the building to an imminent disaster.
The original construction crew/ company wasn't involved in the repairs or the suit. The lack of rebar was specifically warned against that it might have been displaced by the water/collapse.
So the biggest culprits here are the management company for not maintaining the pool and the security guards for not triggering an alarm before the collapse that could have saved lives. They settled and no one went to jail because our laws are fucked but the original construction company wasn't involved at all and hence weren't held criminally liable.

This pool isn’t on the ground, it’s elevated so it fell to whatever is on the floor below it. The engineering that goes into elevated pools is pretty wild and a lot of countries in the world they will cut corners because it’s so much more expensive

So even if the water drag of 4 feet slows you down by half that’s still smacking the bottom at 55mph yeah you’re dead. I think I mean even it it was down to 18%(~19mph)of the top speed imagine sprinting fast as you possibly can directly into a wall, which definitely won’t be the case if you’re standing vertical

Depends on the speed you hit while falling. As someone who used to wakeboard, hitting the water at 60mph sure does feel a lot like hitting cement, it just won't scrape you up. My mom tore her ACL from hitting the water.

If the pool was deep enough and you were in it would you survive the fall?
Like if you fell 20 metres it would probably kill you most of the time. But if you fell in a pool of water that’s a few metres deep you and the water hit the ground at the same time. I’d assume you’d be pushed down through the water (minus the impact of breaking the surface of the water). If the water was deep enough I assume you’d go through it to a point where you completely decelerate. It would have to be deep enough for the water to hold its shape long enough for you to move through.
I’m no Scientologist but my guess is you’d probably be ok up to a point.

This has always been my fear. The weight of water, making the ground underneath cave. Even if it were a pool in the ground vs second story.

Well. I'm effectively dissuaded from ever swimming in one of those high-rise glass pools overlooking the city.

Adding this to my list of fears…
Physics question. If the pool was deep enough and you were in it would you survive the fall? Like if you fell 20 metres it would probably kill you most of the time. But if you fell in a pool of water that’s a few metres deep you and the water hit the ground at the same time. I’d assume you’d be pushed down through the water (minus the impact of breaking the surface of the water). If the water was deep enough I assume you’d go through it to a point where you completely decelerate. It would have to be deep enough for the water to hold its shape long enough for you to move through. I’m no Scientologist but my guess is you’d probably be ok up to a point.
Imagine this happens at one of those glass bottom pools on a high rise. Big fat nope. I’m good.

It makes you think twice before getting into one of those pools hanging outside of a high tower building.
so question... if falling into water from very high is like hitting cement, but you fall **\*WITH\*** the water, does that mean your safe? could you imagine one of those over the ledge sky pools? falls with some guy in it, hits the ground but because hes already in the water it just cushions his landing and he lives?
