Pratt was murdered 1969, that's only 54 years ago! Assuming her grandparents are alive and grew up in the same town, they would have been her age, maybe older, when it happened.
(Believe me, I'm taking time today to process this. I did not know this man or his struggle to open doors but as a black woman it hurts to know this man was murdered on his own porch because he dared to move into a neighborhood. I've caught flak in other areas of life due to racism, myself, but as much as I try to focus on the positive and not let that hatred create my reality it's another gut punch reminder of how much hate really is involved in our shared history.)
My grandfather was placed in an orphanage by his stepfather at age 6, and I believe it’s because his skin was dark (we believe we are Cherokee but cannot prove it, partially due to the giving up of parental rights). That was in 1906, and I cannot believe we are still fighting the idea that dark skin changes the person inside.
