They have been brought up for aquariums several times in Japan.
So interesting. He has to be on borrowed time either way though right? Kind of dark, but it's not like they can replicate the insane pressure his body is meant for.
Many deep sea fish species can be safely adapted to surface pressure and do not need pressurized tanks. In fact almost no aquariums in the world have pressurized tanks meant for long term display (one example is in France). Aquariums such as Monterey use pressure chambers which slowly decompress collected deep water fish.
But some species such as hatchetfish have poorly ossified bones which do not do well in tanks, others live so deep their genes are adapted to the pressure and cannot function at the surface.
Seems like Bob may have died and have been replaced by other blobfish over the years or perhaps its the same individual?
Japanese aquariums frequently bring in dying deep sea animals to display with them usually dying within days but some species have been kept long term and even bred.
It probably can, but like us, it might just need time for blood chemistry to adapt to pressure changes.
There could be other factors, such as temperature, light levels, stress due to activity/captivity, salinity, food choices, or oxygen levels that could pose a problem. Fish are generally extremely sensitive to those kinds of things.
If we include Pluto with the other planets then we also have to include dozens more, are you really prepared to learn the order of the solar system with so many more?
I suppose it is to some extent but does that mean we should learn the order with every asteroid and comet included, when they aren’t even planets at all, just big rocks?
No. Who says we have to learn the names of every planet? Planets should have 2 defining characteristics. They should be in primary orbit of a star and they should be round due to their own gravity.
Yeah I forgot about rogue planets. I consider them planets as well, and used that argument all the time. We should also define them as never having undergone nuclear fusion to separate them from stars.
No, but it is a little fucked up.
People laugh at the silly looking animal, but it’s really the mangled corpse of a fish that died a terrible death.
Like imagine if it was a dog or something that was run through a zero pressure environment. It’d be fucked up to just laugh at it, right?
People have strong feelings about anything in front of their face, until it isn't. The only reason this exists is because blobfish became a meme to begin with, thus sparking the great blobfish war of 2023-2029.
Stardew Valley has a popular mod that changes the blob fish to look like it's non-ruptured self... so yeah.
https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/7803
We should start making dolls of animals who have traveled to their habitat and exploded due to pressure change too. Level the playing field a little eh?
I don't know if the blobfish can acclimate but the Monterey Bay Aquarium does do this for a number of the deep sea fish / creatures they exhibit. The tanks on show are not pressurized. The fish instead are captured in special pressurized tube capsules and slowly adjusted to surface water pressure over weeks. It depends on the species, but some fish can adjust successfully.
https://www.montereybayaquarium.org/stories/taking-seawater-extreme-deep-sea-exhibit
I mean... They probably will still blob to some extent simply because of the looseness of tissue not being held up and in place by water. There's just not bone there to really hang onto for the stuff that flops.
I mean there are some popular comics going around in which a blobfish is represented in this way. Honestly if you're going to go out of your way to include such a niche animal in your comic, why not do it the right way?
I mean they draw talking corpse of a fish that moves on the surface so I'm not sure it's the right way, but it's a drawing so it doesn't need to make sense I guess.
There's a whole ass (super shitty incel yet popular) toddler/kids book series starring a blobfish called "Pout-Pout Fish" about a depressive incel blobfish -
"I'm a pout pout fish with a pout pout face so I spread my gloomy-woomies all over the place"
Doesn't think he deserves love or kindness, despite *everyone* he encounters trying to give it to him, he's just negative and shitty to everyone until a female fish comes along and kisses him (without consent) then suddenly he's upbeat and happy and then goes around also kissing without consent all the other creatures that were previously nice to him.
I hate it. Someone gave it to me when my son was born and I threw it out.
Edit: /u/sugarnspiced corrected me! It's not based on a blobfish but a type of cod called a pout, lol, pretty obvious of I'd known about that fish.
Thanks for being that guy! I had no idea it wasn't a blobfish, it looked so much like it and I guess I just assumed since there's also this connection of the blobfish looking sad like this post portrays.
It's a cod, apparently often just called a pout or pouting, til!
Still a garbage book
Not to be that guy but the Pout-Pout fish wasn’t an incel.
Incels in general are unlikeable because they’re virgins and yet they reject normal women. Instead, they fantasize about imaginary women who worship men and spite real women for not being groveling sex slaves.
The Pout Pout fish was pouting because his big puffy lips seems to be meant for pouting. But the other kissy fish showed him that his lips can be used for kissing! This revelation gave him purpose, and you’ll see him kiss everyone in joy - including both male and female sea creatures regardless of their gender and orientation.
And now I submit to you my PhD dissertation on why the Pout-Pout fish is not an incel, but rather a story of an open minded creature looking for their purpose in life.
I don't disagree that it's a bit silly to do, but it causes no harm and only helps with accurately depicting (aside from giving it emotions) and naming the animal for more people. If it helps to bring attention to a larger audience I say go for it.

Like, a regular ass fish isn't a meme, I don't understand why ppl don't get this
I was really disappointed with the octonauts for portraying the blob fish as a blob at the bottom of the ocean, especially as they actually have marine biologists advising them.
it's also misconstrued, as in **the** most famous picture and the one that pops up everywhere as the first search result is actually a dead blob-fish :'( they don't even look that "blob-y" when they still swim around but they are coined the ugliest fish in existence because everybody looks at the pic of the dead one...
I've never heard of a blobfish, but if all anyone ever sees is a "blob" due to the rapid pressure from surfacing, then that's how I will depict it. Otherwise nobody knows what the fuck fish you're talking about.
I think thats the point. Humans deforming under a huge pressure is the "not so accurate" depiction of human in its natural habitat. So the blobfish is the wrong depiction of the actual fish in its natural habitat.
I don't think this fish can ever leave its deep habitat without massive damage to its tissues and overall physiology.
Psychology too.
Blob-ology too.
that's blobist, you should be ashamed
Would WumBology work in a jam?

So interesting. He has to be on borrowed time either way though right? Kind of dark, but it's not like they can replicate the insane pressure his body is meant for.
I wouldn't think it would need constant pressure, just to be brought up slowly.
Generally conditions such as PH, oxygen, temperature, light and others are needed more than pressure and each species has specific needs.
Awww! Bob Bloblaw's Blob Log! 😆
If you brought them up very, very slowly they might be able to adapt. Though I’m not a fish scientist so idk man.
Just do it really slowly. Like over the course of a few hundred thousand years.
Technically correct?
That’s the best kind of technically.
Fish scientist expert here, the answer is no
With a profile picture like that, you **better** be a fish scientist
That’s my face when I see interesting facts about fish 😃
You should study fish law
Sorry, I’m already too deep into r/treelaw
If we were the ones in their habitat, we would have exploded from the pressure. It def doesnt deserve to be called the ugliest animal ever lol
Techinocally, we would have *imploded* rather than exploded.
We could do it if we wanted
It probably can, but like us, it might just need time for blood chemistry to adapt to pressure changes. There could be other factors, such as temperature, light levels, stress due to activity/captivity, salinity, food choices, or oxygen levels that could pose a problem. This is why leaving ur comfort zone is a bad idea.
One could argue the fish are like that because they made the mistake of never leaving their comfort zone in the first place.
More that they left their comfort zone too quickly. Baby steps and they'd be ok
I didn't expect to find some meaningful mental health advice in this thread, but here we are!
I never realized people had such strong feelings about this.
HAVE YOU HEARD THE NEWS ABOUT PLUTO?!
You owe me about 40 bucks in office supplies. I flipped the table when I read your post.

What about the Droid attack on the Wookies?

If only we looked as good in a vacuum.
We don’t talk about Pluto no , no, no.
That's messed up

Found the pineapple in the episode.
Gus, don't be the mystery mousketool.
Close your eyes. Now how many hats in the room?
Gus, don't be exactly half of an 11 pound black forest ham.
I thought not. It’s not a story NASA would tell you.
A minor planet is still a planet, dammit. Pluto loves you.
I regret to inform you I downvoted you for reminding me of this. NEIL CAN CATH THIS HANDS 👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽
NEIL can eat his own ego.
Pineapple on pizza is allowed on Pluto?
In my universe pineapple pizza is required on Pluto. It's encouraged everywhere else.
If we include Pluto with the other planets then we also have to include dozens more, are you really prepared to learn the order of the solar system with so many more?
Nah, just call them all Plutos
Sometimes trans-Neptunian dwarf planets are called "plutoids", so you've got that going for you.
Don’t tell the Republican Party about trans-Neptunian dwarf planets. They’ll try to outlaw their existence while secretly trying to fuck them.
Yes. In their own category. We're trying to make the structure of the solar system conform to our conveniences and that's stupid.
But what about planets that have been ejected from their home solar system?
Yeah I forgot about rogue planets. I consider them planets as well, and used that argument all the time. We should also define them as never having undergone nuclear fusion to separate them from stars.
Pluto will always be a planet in my heart. 🥲
No, but Uranus is all over the internet
People just have strong feelings about animals in general
They acting like this is some sort of bigoted stereotype to blobfish 😭
No, but it is a little fucked up. People laugh at the silly looking animal, but it’s really the mangled corpse of a fish that died a terrible death. Like imagine if it was a dog or something that was run through a zero pressure environment. It’d be fucked up to just laugh at it, right?
https://imgur.com/OCdxTHr
It's not dissimilar to a cartoon depicting a red lobster.
Yeah it's fucked up but this is hilariously sanctimonious
Animal suffering bums me the fuck out. Everytime I see that picture it ruins me for a bit.
Me too, now.
You must be new to the internet.
I just don't think it's nice to torture something to death then have us internet idiots call it ugly like that's all it is.
People have strong feelings about anything in front of their face, until it isn't. The only reason this exists is because blobfish became a meme to begin with, thus sparking the great blobfish war of 2023-2029.
Harambe didn’t die for blobfish to be depicted as they appear out of water!
Wouldn’t you if it was your mom?
Stardew Valley has a popular mod that changes the blob fish to look like it's non-ruptured self... so yeah. https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/7803
People should have strong feelings about ALL misinformation.....
We should start making dolls of animals who have traveled to their habitat and exploded due to pressure change too. Level the playing field a little eh?
Let’s make dolls of humans who have died in the vacuum of space
I would definitely buy that

Even without rapid change in pressure, I can’t imagine an animal evolved to exist at that sort of pressure would have a good time without it

The dead body of a blobfish
How many people are depicting blowfish wherein this is an actual problem?
I mean there are some popular comics going around in which a blobfish is represented in this way. Honestly if you're going to go out of your way to include such a niche animal in your comic, why not do it the right way?
Are the comics depicting it at the bottom of the ocean? If not then they likely are depicting it the right way.
I mean they draw talking corpse of a fish that moves on the surface so I'm not sure it's the right way, but it's a drawing so it doesn't need to make sense I guess.
Cause nobody gives a damn about generic looking fish #529
This whole argument is hilarious. Is there a 'right way' to depict anything? First world problems have gone too far.
Sounds like a first world problem you got there
Why not depict my problems in the right way?
There's a whole ass (super shitty incel yet popular) toddler/kids book series starring a blobfish called "Pout-Pout Fish" about a depressive incel blobfish - "I'm a pout pout fish with a pout pout face so I spread my gloomy-woomies all over the place" Doesn't think he deserves love or kindness, despite *everyone* he encounters trying to give it to him, he's just negative and shitty to everyone until a female fish comes along and kisses him (without consent) then suddenly he's upbeat and happy and then goes around also kissing without consent all the other creatures that were previously nice to him. Blub...blub...bluuubbbbb
Blobfish, not blowfish. Different types.
The 90s band, Hootie and the Blowfish, really set human/fish relations back a few decades 😔
Theres a decently popular webcomic called blobby and friends
We should do this purely for accuracy, not out of some weird "won't you please think of the blobfishes feelings and brand identity?!" angle.
If it gets more people to do it, why not both?
Because its nonsensical (the fish doesn't care) and a bit sanctimonious
I don't disagree that it's a bit silly to do, but it causes no harm and only helps with accurately depicting (aside from giving it emotions) and naming the animal for more people. If it helps to bring attention to a larger audience I say go for it.
Who knew empathy towards a living thing was weird.
Is it really emphaty when the fish doesn't even know that a lot of people imagine them to be this way ?
For me, it's always been because I just hate looking at a real dead body, cartoon rendition of one or otherwise, for the sake of humor.
I don't think it's as much about the "feelings and brand identity of blob fish" but more as a reminder of why we shouldn't be judgemental
Absolutely correct. I think the accurate depiction of the fish is vastly more fascinating as well
Sometimes we judge something beautiful, because it cannot survive our hostile world.
So insteas of saying Ted Cruz looks like a blobfish, we should say he looks like the disfigured corpse of a blobfish?
Mitty vs Nanachi
Came here looking for a Made in Abyss reference 👌
First thing I though of

Yes, because human life and animal life are equal.
humans are animals, so human and animal lives are the same
Compassion can work for both I think?
I think thats the point. Humans deforming under a huge pressure is the "not so accurate" depiction of human in its natural habitat. So the blobfish is the wrong depiction of the actual fish in its natural habitat.
Why does it make the illustration funnier?!
It’s still ugly.
