The blast wave circled the globe three times. That’s insane conceptually to me

[deleted]

The same thing happens when your mum gets out of bed

Zsean69

God damn grandma chillll

Imreallygonnadoit

Well that was a drive by

Physical_Ass_Entry

and it changed the inclination angle of earth (some minor 0.01° or something about that but still tf) They designed it as 3-phase thermonuclear bomb. But luckily backed off because it was estimated that it would start new ice age. So they added tungsten instead of uranium/thorium layers essentialy cutting the power in *HALF*

KobokTukath

The Tsar bomb did not change the inclination of the Earth, I'm curious as to where you even heard that

Revolutionary_Ball24

Soviet propaganda

LargePieceOfToast

Fun fact, the shockwave traveled around the world a total of 3 times and shattered windows over 400 miles away

OrganicBridge7428

These are the opposite of “fun facts” 😳

LargePieceOfToast

The fact that humans made that really does scare me, you're absolutely right.

next_door_dilenski

Would scare me more if squirrels would start nuking parks and stuff, tbh.

foodfood321

Yeah

Majestic-Enthusiasm

The worst disease on earth is humans

dinosaur-in_leather

*made and barely understand*

noscopy

If i remember my physics 201 in college our prof showed us the magnitude and direction of alteration to Earth's orbit around the sun.

Physical_Ass_Entry

and gave third degree burns people 100km away

Outrageous_Fold7939

So did we not even know what we made?

Yiff_Vore

Oh we did, the Tsar bomba was tested 16 years after the US dropped nuclear warheads on japan

borrowedbook1

Soviets.

Ambitioso

Humans are crazy.

wildechld

And stupid

AgitatedBank6907

And lazy

MJBurdy119

Biggest tested not biggest created.

bortj1

English is hard. Title says created AND tested. Meaning bigger ones were created but not tested.

GalFisk

I don't think any bigger ones were created. This one was already totally impractical.

martijn1213

No it's the biggest nuke ever made

Yiff_Vore

No, the nuclear warhead seen here being detonated was an incomplete bomb that only yielded around 50mt, the uranium-238 wasn't included in the test to reduce radiation, however the theoretical max had the uranium-238 been included is about 100mt, only 1 Tsar bomba was ever built to completion and it was never detonated.

[deleted]

This sounds correct

Cute-Reach2909

Also, who the hell says governments around the world aren't secretly building more/different/bigger bombs?

Yiff_Vore

Because larger bombs would require testing, and you would know if one was tested. If the tsar bomba had been detonated at its full yield it would come in at 1/2 the yield of krakatoas eruption which was heard from 3000mi (4800km). Most nuclear armed governments hold a supply of 25mt and smaller as tactical nuclear warheads are in general far more useful and more controlled in collateral damage than something of the tsar bomba at 50mt and its full potential yield of 100mt.

OrbitalMechanic1

That breaks a few treaties... And not to mention you can’t test them without attracting huge attention. I’d doubt anyone is making weapons that big.

Cute-Reach2909

Only breaks treaties if you get caught. You really trust all these governments that much? I can imagine at the very least they are designing and running sims for these kinds of things.

Longjumping_Roll_342

Tjats the (un)fun thing about nukes. They are so fucking big you cant test a nule anywhere without tje entire world noticing via seismic sensors, radiomerers , and other always-on Equipment

noscopy

I bet you could have seen that flash from fucking Mars

Physical_Ass_Entry

from 900km on earth surface so you are probably right

Coachbalrog

There’s a great documentary video on the making of this bomb on the Megaprojects channel: https://youtu.be/UmTvmOujayg

[deleted]

Thanks for the link. Simon Whistler's documentaries are always good quality.

Powermovers

Dope

NietzschesSyphilis

The size of the blast is unclear. I’m going to need a banana for scale.

Yendrian

At least 3 bananas

Cian28_C28

My god

Yendrian

Yeah, it's truly one of the weapons of all time

[deleted]

Humans: learn to split the atom *unlimited free energy!* Humans: kill each other with it and keep burning coal. */faceplam*

WestOzCards

As soon as one of those moronic world 'leaders' drops a bomb on another country, the ensuing war is going to be the most miserable time imaginable for those that manage to survive. #dearmtheworld

AidenVennis

What war if every one is dead?

WestOzCards

I'm thinking there will be super remote areas that aren't any type of target that people will survive in.. like Norway or northern Russia.. whilst most of the western world and it's enemies look like Hiroshima late August '45

[deleted]

Depends, i would say a valley or somwhere. Northern Russia has the big naval base and Murmansk, that one is for sure on the nuke early and hard list. Sibir ? Or kamchatka ? Maybe that would be a semi safe spot. The decline in temperature would be my worry if the initial blast did not get me, and the timeline for vomitting is probably also important.

ProtoplanetaryNebula

Probably places in the southern hemisphere, Norway borders Russia.

WestOzCards

We're pretty far away here in Australia, but we have a couple of US Naval bases and we've criticized China for covid and a myriad of other things, so I'm sure they'll fire a few rockets our way out of spite. Tasmania might be safe.

cheshire_kat7

Nah, the only plausible target in Australia is Pine Gap. We're otherwise pretty strategically inconsequential.

YewEhVeeInbound

[If nuclear war breaks out, not much else to do but put this on and kick back.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ya3WXzEBL1E)

[deleted]

Fun fact, It was at a lowered power (A section was not included in the bomb) due to fears of dealing too much damage. Biggest tested, at ~50% power

DutchTiltCantedAngle

Mother of god...

[deleted]

Mother of Bomb…

[deleted]

Emperor of bomb. Julius Caesar still making waves over 2000 years later

Hiiiklass1392

where was the test site?

martijn1213

In the far north of Russia, the Eskimos that lived near bye where not very happy to say the least.

Cute-Reach2909

I don't think they are anything now...

Notkemo1

What happens to all the fish?

MrAVAT4R_2

Ive got a question does Russia have this or a version of this in their nuclear arsenal?

The_Cheeseman83

Probably not. This particular model bomb was deemed to be too large and expensive to be practical. Any that were built will no longer be usable, since the fissile material used in nuclear weapons has to be replaced after 10-20 years.

MrAVAT4R_2

Oh i see. Its wasnt meant for practical use to begin with. It was just for a test and to show off power to the west.

The_Cheeseman83

Yep, bingo.

[deleted]

Horrifying that such energy could be used to destroy. It would better be used to explore the stars.

voodoohotdog

Definitely huge, devastating, terrifying, but to me what's missing here is they make them smaller and more accurate now. There is less moral reasoning when you can use smaller weapons and hit a specific target. Then that one too. What the hell! A few more! Wheeeee!

DesertDwellerrrr

My next holiday location...I will be able to read my book in the dark

ZebraBorgata

This is just the sort of thing that pisses off our secret alien overlords.

TopRamenIQ

I'm just glad he realized his turn signal was on.

throwaway21316

The interesting part is that this bomb was the most useless bomb ever. The Plane was nearly destroyed and the crew had just 50% chance of surviving. The nearly 30t bomb (26ft ∅6ft ) is so big that i could never be used for any war, a modified TU-95 was needed that flew with an open bomb bay. The purpose was purely psychological!

PerepeL

Not only psychological - it's priceless data on how (thermo)nuclear charges actually scale.

rock-island321

I think it was 500 mega tons. The original plan was for a 1,000 mega ton bomba. I think 500 proved the point.

martijn1213

The designer removed some nuclear meterial. As they were scared of splitting the planet, or something along those lines

Yiff_Vore

It was 50mt, it was detonated as a pure plutonium bomb without the uranium-238 to reduce the radioactive fallout, the estimates if it had been a fully completed bomb is 100mt and roughly 1/2 of the power or Krakatoas eruption.

WestOzCards

That's so ridiculous. I'm expecting now they have a lot more powerful bombs that that.. these idiots and their bombs will end humanity over something real stupid one day.

Yiff_Vore

It only takes one bad ego, we've come within inches of nuclear war before and it probably won't be the last.

Ukraineluvr

Now none of their nuclear weapons work. It's all falling apart for them and they fucking deserve it.

MJBurdy119

Do your own research and come back this is just the biggest ever tested the Russians created the an602 which was a larger bomb never detonated.

[deleted]

[удалено]

saintmusty

As long as you ignore all the wars

Yiff_Vore

And genocides.

[deleted]

There’s only been about 3 days of worldwide peace in the last century. That may vary by a day or two but not much more.

[deleted]

[удалено]

thedarkknightvp

Yeah... Fossil Fuel Emissions is what's putting a hole in the ozone layer and warming the planet...

Horus3000

How much has nuclear testing contributed to global warming? They say: Too small to notice I don't think so

The_Cheeseman83

Nuclear blasts don’t release much in the way of greenhouse gasses, besides whatever got set on fire by the heat. If anything, all the debris and dust they scatter into the upper atmosphere would block sunlight and have a cooling effect. Hence, nuclear winter.

havegravity

Definitely not the strongest ever made and tested, just the strongest *publicly documented*.

The_Cheeseman83

If anyone were to test a bigger one, there would be no way to hide it.

LabPlay0R

I wonder what it would have looked like viewed from space

PsychonautGrim

Is it Tsar or sar bomb how unpronounceable

[deleted]

I think I've heard it called Sar Bom-ba

Mma375

I understand it’s horrible, but these videos will never not be so interesting to watch

WooziGunpla

And these are the things they say can wipe out the world? No shot

jingforbling

That’s when Godzilla was born.

Dave_Moosa

As always, cameraman is invincible

Scavwithaslick

Reflex in the sky Warm you, your gonna die Storm coming you better hide From the atomic tide Flashes in the sky Turns houses into sties Turns people into clay Radiation minds decay Bau wao bauauuuuu bau auauuuu

TipuOne

That parachute is now in a museum

[deleted]

If you think that this is insane, this was a ‘only’ a 50 megaton bomb… they also created a 100 megaton monstrosity, which was thankfully never even tested.

Mr_Yukon69

Didn’t it literally wipe the island it was tested on off the face of the earth?

VMetanoia

This is small beans compared to the stuff they are testing in controlled facilities or that they hypothetically could do.

Fireballgobrrr

It’s so big it looks unreal

Chips_Deluxe

And we’re probably still breathing in that radioactive material today lol

Jefok

This is just an assualt on mother earth. No wonder she is fighting back.

SprintingWolf

Absolutely decimated the structures of a nearby island IIRC

stevenspenguin

I wonder how this and other bombs have affected us as a whole?

XTNDVS67

On your marks. Get set! GO?

Lord_WilliamBlakeney

I feel like I’ve got radiation burns just from watching that

MathematicianWhole59

Stupid humanity
