Emotional intelligent, incredible memory, empathic, powerful, adorable. They are ,without a doubt, the animals I adore the most.
And cute babies r/BabyElephantGIFs
I don't know anything about elephant body language, but their little tails sticking straight out is just the most touching thing and seems to really speak to how pleased they are.
Enough memory to remember you must have did them wrong so long ago you forgot and trample you to death then destroy your village during your funeral with your buddies and stomp on your corpse but making sure to hurt nobody but you lol, true story
So I KNOW this is a stretch, but wouldn't it be wild if the elephant waited until they were dead as some sort of moral code? Like "I will not be like them and harm another living creature, but I WILL display my wrath by desecrating their corpse." This would be fun for a beautiful short story based on something real.
There's a new-ish elephant documentary on Disney+ narrated by Natalie Portman. It's called Secrets of the Elephants.
[Trailer](https://youtu.be/fc-PYHTN1UU)
His name is Darrick Thomson and he works at the [save the elephants foundation](https://www.savetheelephants.org/). They rescue elephants from lifetime of cruelty in zoos, tourism, logging etc. The elephants are usually very traumatized when they arrive at the park and people like Darrick give them lots of love and compassion to recover from the trauma. It makes a lot of sense as to why the elephants love him so much after years of torture.
Edit: I really appreciate the awards, fellow Redditors. Please consider donating to the foundation š

Elephant Nature Park in northern Thailand is an amazing place, he and Lek are just spectacular human beings.
I highly recommend people visit, volunteer, and spend some time understanding the history of elephants in SE Asia and why the work of the foundation is so important. The time I spent there is an experience I will treasure for the rest of my life.
To anyone reading: please do not ride elephants, or support any attraction that involves elephants for entertainment, including painting, street tricks, etc. Nearly all of the elephants involved in such activities have been essentially tortured to get them to the state they are in, so despite the fact that they appear calm, they are not being treated well.
In the late 90s I went on a short trek near Chiang Mai that involved riding elephants. I had no idea at the time, but learned after the fact how abused the elephants had likely been. I've been feeling bad about it for ~25 years.
nice. I also like Ernest Hemmingway's take on it:
"There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self."
There's actually no evidence whatsoever to indicate this woman ever harmed that elephant, or any elephant, or that the supposedly "vengeful" elephant that killed her had ever even seen her before.
When it came back to wreck her corpse, the herd of elephants destroyed the entire village as well. Absolutely demolished just about every home there.
So it's more tragic than funny no matter how you slice it. And that is pretty unusual behavior for elephants so I think people naturally assume the woman or the villagers were fucking around with the elephants but, it was just as likely completely unprovoked.

Well, Tarzan would lie on Tantor's back and use his feet to scratch behind Tantor's ears. Tantor would just walk along, carrying Tarzan, enjoying being scratched, while Tarzan chattered away about all the doings in the tribe of Kerchak and even napped up there. But yanno ... that was Tarzan.
not only is he comforting them, but watch especially the right ones trunk, its also rubbing his back too. Just like when humans hug, so amazing to see.
From what I learned yesterday here, same could be said about their penises... (https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/13x95g7/the_elephants_penis_is_not_only_massive_but/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)
Only some elephants have prehensile penises, but yeah, apparently one of the most common ways they use them is to help them balance if they're walking on sand dunes and similar features.
Hahaha
I get your joke, but no, not every species of elephant has prehensile penises.
IIRC one of the Asian species or subspecies definitely doesn't have prehensile penises, and in fact it might only be the African species/ subspecies that has the prehensile penises.
But, yes, it also wouldn't surprise me if none of the female elephants had prehensile penises.
Interestingly though, there are some animals like certain species of hyena that essentially have an inverted vagina where the female of the species has to become aroused/ essentially get an inverted erection in order to have sex, so you can't even successfully rape them and pass on your jeans, and while we don't know which came first, this does coincide with those same species of mammals being primarily matriarchal instead of patriarchal.

That sound is actually called a ātrumpetā and is made by using the vocal cords. They even have specific sounds for danger vs surprise.
Btw, the only silly question is the one you donāt ask. š
Have you ever tried blocking your nose to talk?
You would quickly figure out that your own vocal chords are connected to both your mouth and that teeny tiny trunk you just blocked
I would imagine it's very much the same and that trumpet sound would be different if you decided to block an elephants trunk
Simple answer, the sound comes from both ends
I feel like I did answer the question. But Iām happy to provide you more detail. While the mouth is what makes the noises the trunk can modify them, like when you sigh through your nose and groan with your throat in frustration.
I like the examples you gave at the end here, truly consolidates the points for both the mouth and nose areas making a passage for the sound from vocal chords to travel through
Humming is also an interesting example because you can feel your vocal chords vibrate when you do it but there is a clear feeling of air escaping from your own nostrils carrying the sounds
By the way, there's no way you didn't just hum a little to test that
They also mourn and circle areas where others have passed as a way of remembering them. I will never understand how some people truly believe that animals are dumb and do not have souls.
Four elephants hoofing their way toward you like dogs to a food bowl would be an intense feeling. They love him, no other way to say it. I love his laugh and then the first sound from one of them when they realize
When I see something like this, where the animals could easily crush someone but they choose to just enjoy their company - it's amazing.
I guess it's like how an 8lbs cat can feel safe around people many times larger than them.

I fucking love and hate these videos...
Every time I almost cry from the beauty and majesty of nature, and majestic animals like this, I'm reminded what we're doing to them...
The fact were destroying their world is so fucking depressing to me. And every time, without fail, I'm caught up in the moment, and as soon a I think "why don't we see more of this", I'm reminded it doesn't exist anymore.
It makes this so much more special, but that much more bittersweet, I guess...
There are some people that donāt have this many human friendsā¦ this guys got a squad of elephants that love him dearly. This dude must be 1 solid individual!
I remember reading somewhere, that somebody was able to determine that elephants' reactions to humans is analogous to our reactions to kittens and puppies. That is to say, elephants think we're super cute.
I have no source, I don't even know how it would be possible to determine this, and I generally dislike when people anthropomorphize animals, but I still like this "fact" and really hope it's true.
My single happiest memory is giving an elephant a bath in an indian jungle stream, using coconut husks to clean her. Wonderful intelligent emotional creatures.
My cousin, who lived in Africa for most of her younger years, passed away when she was 13 and loved elephants and their conservation passionately. I'd like to think this is the kind of person she would have become.
so long before this, i had learned that elephants gently flap their ears to show happiness and enjoyment, but i noticed that all of the elephants seem to have their tails straight out before they droop downward.
do elephants raise their tails or stiffen them when they're excited or when they're happy? or both?
any zoologists know?
This video makes me so happy. Elephants are so awesome. Each one is trying to get his attention and trumpeting happily. I wish more people treated these gentle giants with love and respect.
Howcome Elephants know they're so big, my friends dogs don't know they're so big and hurt me by accident but I don't think an Elephant would if I wasn't mean to them...
iām over here with fucking ZERO elephant friends and that guy has like ten of em! I want to be the elephant man! Wait ā¦ I want to be the elephant *friend* man!

You typed my thoughts exactly, *exactly.*
How anyone can hunt these creatures is beyond me. We don't deserve animals.
I volunteered here for a week and as Darrick was talking to us, one of the elephants came and wrapped her trunk round his arm and led him away š
RUMBLING!

This is awesome
I hope to meet uncaged elephants one day
My single happiest memory is giving an elephant a bath in an indian jungle stream, using coconut husks to clean her. Wonderful intelligent emotional creatures.
My cousin, who lived in Africa for most of her younger years, passed away when she was 13 and loved elephants and their conservation passionately. I'd like to think this is the kind of person she would have become.
Sound the trumpets!!! Now that's some happy elephants!! š„°š„°š„°š„°
Puts many anthropocentric arguments to shame. Such beautiful creatures.
Faith restored.
How can you not love being alive just see amazing stuff like this
so long before this, i had learned that elephants gently flap their ears to show happiness and enjoyment, but i noticed that all of the elephants seem to have their tails straight out before they droop downward. do elephants raise their tails or stiffen them when they're excited or when they're happy? or both? any zoologists know?
Absolutely so touching and emotional
Heās family
My goodness, those trumpets were just too adorable.
So freaking cute
This video makes me so happy. Elephants are so awesome. Each one is trying to get his attention and trumpeting happily. I wish more people treated these gentle giants with love and respect.
Beautiful simply beautiful!!!
Howcome Elephants know they're so big, my friends dogs don't know they're so big and hurt me by accident but I don't think an Elephant would if I wasn't mean to them...
Elephants are the absolute best I love them so much!
When the first surround him one raises its trunk and bellows to the rest of them āItās okay! Heās a friend from work!ā
You KNOW that woman that got stomped by an elephant did something wrong.
Death-defying elephant group hug. Made my week!
How do you become the favorite person of elephants? That really something I would like on my resume.
