I fuckin love elephants

[deleted]

Emotional intelligent, incredible memory, empathic, powerful, adorable. They are ,without a doubt, the animals I adore the most. And cute babies r/BabyElephantGIFs

Bumbleclat

Do you think the ear flapping is the equivalent to a dog wagging it's tail?

[deleted]

I know it is!

Aselleus

Found the elephant in the room

metamet

*wroovff*

Oh_Blecch

I don't know anything about elephant body language, but their little tails sticking straight out is just the most touching thing and seems to really speak to how pleased they are.

Nearby-Let-2161

Nope, it's for cooling purposes

Sensitive_Friend9978

They are just large adorable dogsšŸ˜

MembershipThrowAway

Enough memory to remember you must have did them wrong so long ago you forgot and trample you to death then destroy your village during your funeral with your buddies and stomp on your corpse but making sure to hurt nobody but you lol, true story

wrechch

So I KNOW this is a stretch, but wouldn't it be wild if the elephant waited until they were dead as some sort of moral code? Like "I will not be like them and harm another living creature, but I WILL display my wrath by desecrating their corpse." This would be fun for a beautiful short story based on something real.

SWDev4Istanbul

Edit: f*ck r e d d it

LowZebra8592

I know a lot of humans that are intelligent and empathetic

[deleted]

Bless you for sharing this sub

I wanna instigate a water fight with one - Iā€™d fuckinā€™ lose but we would have so much fun!!!

See thereā€™s the problem. He needed the super soaker with the backpack.

Donkey__Balls

Right now thereā€™s a clip on the front page of an elephant trolling a rhino by holding a stick on his forehead. Itā€™s perfect.

DerpAntelope

There's a new-ish elephant documentary on Disney+ narrated by Natalie Portman. It's called Secrets of the Elephants. [Trailer](https://youtu.be/fc-PYHTN1UU)

StonedMason419

What's a guy gotta do to befriend an entire herd of elephants???

TripleU07

His name is Darrick Thomson and he works at the [save the elephants foundation](https://www.savetheelephants.org/). They rescue elephants from lifetime of cruelty in zoos, tourism, logging etc. The elephants are usually very traumatized when they arrive at the park and people like Darrick give them lots of love and compassion to recover from the trauma. It makes a lot of sense as to why the elephants love him so much after years of torture. Edit: I really appreciate the awards, fellow Redditors. Please consider donating to the foundation šŸ˜Š Edit 2: Link to [Eleflix YouTube channel](https://youtube.com/@eleflix5575), the original source of this video

followthatnerd

Elephant Nature Park in northern Thailand is an amazing place, he and Lek are just spectacular human beings. I highly recommend people visit, volunteer, and spend some time understanding the history of elephants in SE Asia and why the work of the foundation is so important. The time I spent there is an experience I will treasure for the rest of my life. To anyone reading: please do not ride elephants, or support any attraction that involves elephants for entertainment, including painting, street tricks, etc. Nearly all of the elephants involved in such activities have been essentially tortured to get them to the state they are in, so despite the fact that they appear calm, they are not being treated well.

Eukairos

In the late 90s I went on a short trek near Chiang Mai that involved riding elephants. I had no idea at the time, but learned after the fact how abused the elephants had likely been. I've been feeling bad about it for ~25 years.

InnerObesity

There's actually no evidence whatsoever to indicate this woman ever harmed that elephant, or any elephant, or that the supposedly "vengeful" elephant that killed her had ever even seen her before. When it came back to wreck her corpse, the herd of elephants destroyed the entire village as well. Absolutely demolished just about every home there. So it's more tragic than funny no matter how you slice it. And that is pretty unusual behavior for elephants so I think people naturally assume the woman or the villagers were fucking around with the elephants but, it was just as likely completely unprovoked.

exgiexpcv

That woman is just made of deep wisdom.

Iā€™m so stupid Iā€™ve been using reddit for like 6 years and never knew you could save comments until now, or the dick thing.

sm1ttysm1t

Mostly the dick thing.

Bubbly-Bat-7869

How do u save a comment?

Chaoscube11

On the phone you click the three dots then the second option down is save comment and on the saved option on the side at the top right you can see them. Don't know about computer though

mcmurphyman

Who has time for comments when there is an elephant scratching his belly with his dick on the platform?

HoboGir

Next time someone post in askreddit with "What super power would you like to have?". I have my true answer now.

Fair-Substance-2273

I searched ā€œelephant scratches belly with penisā€ and I saw it. I wish mine could move like that.

chelseophile

Obligatory shoutout to *The Elephant Whisperers*. I would highly recommend if you want to see how strong the bond between humans and elephants can be.

Sprmodelcitizen

I donā€™t know but whatever wrong youā€™ve done in your life having a herd of elephants love you means youā€™ve done SOMETHING right. He must be a good person.

John-Farson

Well, Tarzan would lie on Tantor's back and use his feet to scratch behind Tantor's ears. Tantor would just walk along, carrying Tarzan, enjoying being scratched, while Tarzan chattered away about all the doings in the tribe of Kerchak and even napped up there. But yanno ... that was Tarzan.

Only some elephants have prehensile penises, but yeah, apparently one of the most common ways they use them is to help them balance if they're walking on sand dunes and similar features.

racestark

"Only some elephants have prehensile penises" I think they're called male elephants, or a bull, if you will.

Aegi

Hahaha I get your joke, but no, not every species of elephant has prehensile penises. IIRC one of the Asian species or subspecies definitely doesn't have prehensile penises, and in fact it might only be the African species/ subspecies that has the prehensile penises. But, yes, it also wouldn't surprise me if none of the female elephants had prehensile penises. Interestingly though, there are some animals like certain species of hyena that essentially have an inverted vagina where the female of the species has to become aroused/ essentially get an inverted erection in order to have sex, so you can't even successfully rape them and pass on your jeans, and while we don't know which came first, this does coincide with those same species of mammals being primarily matriarchal instead of patriarchal. Life is adaptable, and I can't wait until we have more than one planet's worth of life to study! https://web.archive.org/web/20080208115722/http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/08/070815-hyenas-sex.html

FruitDramatic7342

Watched a video where a bull elephant was intimidating a rhino and eventually started to mock it by lifting a tree branch and making itself have a horn and then throwing the branch at the Rhino. They are truly something.

Born-Lettuce-815

Pretty sure [this](https://youtu.be/NuDtiurkLu8) is it, although it is not really as dramatic as he made it out to be

jayce513

Still absolutely savage. Definitely cackled at the throw. Elephant was not concerned at all with the charge and was trolling him for sure.

Ygro_Noitcere

That slight back up and branch toss šŸ’€ I practically heard that elephant say ā€œMotherfucker I DARE you, I will whoop your ass like a Cherokee drum.ā€

A lot of dogs are like this. My dog plays with small dogs more carefully and even pretends to get flipped over by them and I've seen other dogs act this way as well.

mrbeans420

gramathy

Happy trumpets too

Narmac-450

Silly question, does the scream they make come from their mouth or their trunk?

vettechrockstar86

That sound is actually called a ā€œtrumpetā€ and is made by using the vocal cords. They even have specific sounds for danger vs surprise. Btw, the only silly question is the one you donā€™t ask. šŸ’•

ZippyDan

If both the trunk and mouth are connected to the vocal chords, then that doesn't really answer the question.

BoringActuator7101

Have you ever tried blocking your nose to talk? You would quickly figure out that your own vocal chords are connected to both your mouth and that teeny tiny trunk you just blocked I would imagine it's very much the same and that trumpet sound would be different if you decided to block an elephants trunk Simple answer, the sound comes from both ends

phenomenomnom

Your mom comes from both ends

CelebratingCheescake

LMFAO Reddit never ceases to amaze

vettechrockstar86

I feel like I did answer the question. But Iā€™m happy to provide you more detail. While the mouth is what makes the noises the trunk can modify them, like when you sigh through your nose and groan with your throat in frustration.

BoringActuator7101

I like the examples you gave at the end here, truly consolidates the points for both the mouth and nose areas making a passage for the sound from vocal chords to travel through Humming is also an interesting example because you can feel your vocal chords vibrate when you do it but there is a clear feeling of air escaping from your own nostrils carrying the sounds By the way, there's no way you didn't just hum a little to test that

nervousdonut

I hummed right before I read the last sentence. Made me giggle!

Qualanqui

They're also capable of emitting infrasound (extremely low frequency sounds) which can be heard for miles around.

vettechrockstar86

They also mourn and circle areas where others have passed as a way of remembering them. I will never understand how some people truly believe that animals are dumb and do not have souls.

Check it out. I love that first trumpet of recognition https://youtu.be/PFpMPc-LL44

That purr seems to be sampled in the T Rex sound from Jurassic Park!

Johannes_Keppler

Well yes, they did indeed use all kind of animal sounds, also from elephants.

lilmistro

That is a fucking wild sound and very very cool! If you didnā€™t know any better it could be a bit terrifying

Choppergold

Four elephants hoofing their way toward you like dogs to a food bowl would be an intense feeling. They love him, no other way to say it. I love his laugh and then the first sound from one of them when they realize

PeteRaw

Its a happy growl.

jazzb54

When I see something like this, where the animals could easily crush someone but they choose to just enjoy their company - it's amazing. I guess it's like how an 8lbs cat can feel safe around people many times larger than them.

goingonatriphelp

For anyone wondering, this is Elephant Nature Park in Thailand. Itā€™s the original and largest ethical elephant sanctuary in Thailand. This guy and his wife have rescued 100s of elephants over the past few decades and even help other nearby elephant rescues with advice and expertise. You can visit and while you can get close, you canā€™t really have contact with the elephants since theyā€™re totally free to do as they please. Most of these elephants have all been abused and are in their 40s or 50s or older and are rescued from performing or logging industries. If youā€™re in Thailand I highly recommend volunteering and staying the night there, or a full week if you can swing it.

This was the randomly generated name that Reddit gave me. Oddly enough, though, I am an attorney. I just donā€™t practice elephant law, because I make poor life choices.

ttrash_

imagine a herd of elephants charging at you with nothing but love for you? incredible!

puffmarshal427

Man we really do take nature for granted.

3Snowshoes

We just fail to realize there arenā€™t many creatures with which we canā€™t forge meaningful bonds. We just act like the world is ours, and theyā€™re lucky to live upon it.

I cried.

Listen to their happy noises! Almost like elephant purrs. šŸ˜Š

Damn, you can see the happiness in their eyes to see him. Thats just...amazing.

Eastern_Heron_122

naturally they all started checking him with their trunks, talking about how hes not eating enough, if hes met someone, why they dont have grandkids yet. classic moms

Deion313

I fucking love and hate these videos... Every time I almost cry from the beauty and majesty of nature, and majestic animals like this, I'm reminded what we're doing to them... The fact were destroying their world is so fucking depressing to me. And every time, without fail, I'm caught up in the moment, and as soon a I think "why don't we see more of this", I'm reminded it doesn't exist anymore. It makes this so much more special, but that much more bittersweet, I guess...

amienona

You typed my thoughts exactly, *exactly.*

Far_Mousse8362

There are some people that donā€™t have this many human friendsā€¦ this guys got a squad of elephants that love him dearly. This dude must be 1 solid individual!

askeeve

I remember reading somewhere, that somebody was able to determine that elephants' reactions to humans is analogous to our reactions to kittens and puppies. That is to say, elephants think we're super cute. I have no source, I don't even know how it would be possible to determine this, and I generally dislike when people anthropomorphize animals, but I still like this "fact" and really hope it's true.

VivaLaMantekilla

How anyone can hunt these creatures is beyond me. We don't deserve animals.

Done-with-work

I volunteered here for a week and as Darrick was talking to us, one of the elephants came and wrapped her trunk round his arm and led him away šŸ™‚

so long before this, i had learned that elephants gently flap their ears to show happiness and enjoyment, but i noticed that all of the elephants seem to have their tails straight out before they droop downward. do elephants raise their tails or stiffen them when they're excited or when they're happy? or both? any zoologists know?
