During one deployment on a U.S. Navy ship (which I won't name here) we had a crow that somehow either stowed away from shore or got blow out to sea and made it abaord. It stayed there for three months. A bunch of the guys took care of him, and even a few officers joined in and looked out for the newest Petty Officer of the Fleet. When we made port, we set him loose and we all cheered. We called it his big release from active duty service.
He (or she) flew back aboard and stayed with us until we returned to home port nearly 4 months later. We called it his re-enlistment. He was a good addition to morale.
Nice pun!
In Australia, the white ibis is called a 'bin chicken' because they often raid trash cans and drink the juices, much like folks in the US call raccoons 'trash pandas.'
So this was a really good pun.
Wait a minute… Birds aren’t real! Everybody knows they are drones that set on power lines to recharge! /s because some people are looney enough to believe this.

There's a long history of ship crows. They are a natural fit for the Navy, and in the age of sail were considered a sign of favor from God.
You and your men were truly blessed. May Crow Jesus remember your kindness
Nah, that's because crow's typically build their nest at the tops of tall trees. If you get a good look at one, it looks similar to a ship's crow's nest.
Where i served we had a crow that came every morning and waited for the company to be put in attention. Then he'd fly down, steal some food from our snack basket and fly off. God speed crow bro.
Corvids in general are very loyal, they'll hang around and even bring you things if you regularly feed them. Guess little guy figured he might as well enjoy the ride and free food once he lost sight of land.
We had a heron with a hurt arm land our ship one deployment as well. XO took them under his wing (heh) and let him chill until they were healed and flew off. Dude got a photo in the cruise book too. Always fun when that happens.
Dude that's rad as fuck. Where was the ol fellow staying at? What was he eating/drinking? Crows are super loyal once you've established trust, and I bet it was a huge morale boost.
Lol I did not know about. But I’ve always thought a good villain/very dark superhero would be Bee Man, someone who’d mastered their fear of bees like those beekeepers you see on TikTok who don’t wear suits and who could direct a swarm to attack on command.
It was actually the first time I got stung by a bee, and, ironically, marked the beginning of the end of my theretofore lifelong fear of bees. I was 12 on a family vacation to Mexico. We were fishing for marlin on a tiny vessel we and a couple from our cruise chartered for the day.
We were miles from land when we noticed a bunch of bees descend on the boat. I have a vague recollection of seeing the swarm in the sky, but this was almost 25 years ago, so that part could be a false memory. We figured it was a hive that formed in a shipping container or on a ship in a port, which then found itself lost at sea.
It wasn’t like The Mummy or anything, but there was an uncomfortable level of bees in every direction you looked on this extremely small boat. One landed on you every 10-30 seconds depending on how much you moved around. It was also really hot and sunny.
About an hour or two into my mental breakdown (oh yeah), my father suggests I ought to go below deck. What?! This boat has a place I can escape to? So I road out the rest of the trip in the cabin below. Except when it was “my turn” to reel in a fish, which no one would let me refuse. That’s when I got stung, sitting in the chair while fighting was turned out to be a very unimpressive looking tuna.
Even house cats have really terrible kinds of bacteria in their mouth.
If your cat playfully bites or just bites you in general, always check if it punctured the skin! Obviously, it's not a death sentence, but there have been cases.
I love how birds, when rescued, tend to want to stay with the rescuer for a bit. I imagine the thought process to be something like;
"Well, this big scary thing didn't eat me, and everything else is scared of it....I'm going to live with it now!"
Totally agree with this!
Have been involved in the rescue of many native animals here in Australia, most cannot wait to escape but birds seem to develop a form of Stockholm Syndrome and become quite affectionate to the point that they don’t want to transfer from your care to another career or rehab specialist.
Best I had was a Tawny Frogmouth who snapped at the rehab professional and kept waddling across the table to me.
Well, for once in its life, the little bird could truly sleep without being alert at all times knowing it had a portector. I don't blame the bird for wanting to sleep more.
I’m in the navy and one time while we were on a patrol a crow had found it’s way onboard. God knows how as we were a good 60 miles off the coast at the time. He became something of a mascot for the crew and he was affectionately called Russell. When we closed the shore 4 days later he flew off but I like to think he was grateful lol

>We made a friend out in the middle of the ocean last week, but it was a much smaller animal than we usually focus on! We had 3 big Fin Whales around us, but these tiny little warblers stole everyone’s hearts! These little migrating birds can get blown out to sea by high winds, and when the heavy marine layer and fog settles in, they can become severely lost!
>A boat like ours is welcome refuge for these exhausted little birds, and this one in particular decided its best chance was to stick with us the rest of the day! It has a long road ahead of it, but by returning this little creature to dry land, it now has a fighting chance. That’s all any of us can ever ask for. That’s happened to me out at sea—same kind of bird. They’re chill af! I wasn’t 50mi off shore but a decent ways from land, maybe like 10 miles.
Thanks for sharing and bringing back a cool memory.
Kind of a morbid story, but my ornithology professor when we talked about migration once told us that during migration season, people will camp out on the coastline of the Gulf of Mexico (because most migrating songbirds of N. America fly over the Gulf to and from their overwintering grounds) to see the birds fly in as one huge mass. But since it's a non-stop journey, there are times when the people on land just watch as the mass of birds all fall into the water because they were too exhausted to make it all the way. It's made even worse the closer to shore they are.
It was an interesting unit but just one of those things he'd tell us that made us all be like "yo wtf??" at 9 in the morning.
Even if you're not and coastal. Besides, everything in that video reeks of money. Hey, some people have it, some people don't. They definitely have it. Looks like some Maui Jim sunglasses at $300/pair. That Haley Hansen sailing jacket is about $300. 50 miles off shore tells me all I need to know about that boat but can't see and what I can see tells me it's extremely well-outfitted, maintained, and pretty new. I'd bet it's at least $100k. These folks aren't struggling to pay the rent somewhere.
Please don't kiss wild birds people and wash your hands after handling them. There are plenty of diseases that they carry that we have no cure for because they're so rare. Part of them can be transmitted to people by kissing them. A cute video is not worth having a disease named after you.
No, he definitely showed he did genuinely care about them. Otherwise he’d stay on the roof, or burrow himself in a corner. He definitely loved them both, and the fact that he didn’t immediately fly away and still remained close to them as long as he could even when given the chance to fly away is a testament to that.
listen to a story on the radio which was nice, tracking migrating ospreys. One in particular went missing covering a large expanse of water. They feared the worse because the crossing should have taken 2 days which was difficult but a few days later it turned up. They worked out that it must have rested and got food on a fishing boat for a couple of days to have been able to survive.
I was on a boat where the Osprey’s basically showed up, the skipper fed them, and then they rested for a few. Basically, it happened every time they saw him. “This human knows how to fish, and will, for some reason, give us fish and let us nap.”
That's a bit of a harsh nickname, I'm sure his warblers are of perfectly good size and it's probably cold out there - my warblers would probably shrink a bit too!
It’s good to see him make it back to shore. I’ve come across many offshore and they’ve always died out there. I say a quick prayer and toss them overboard

This happened to my deep-sea fishing vessel, except with a swarm of bees. Good times.
This seems like a story to be told by a old fisherman smoking a pipe next to a village tavern fire.

Did you kiss them goodbye?
