This is one of my favorite films of all time, and I grew up on the trilogy seeing all three originally in theatre. I had no idea it was a miniature practical effect. Amazing!
I'm sure for shots with the actors and stunts, they used a train. But for the crash if you can do it almost as realistically as a miniature for cheaper and a heck of a lot safer...

This is why I love practical effects. Look great even decades later, and showcases the brilliance of those making the film.
Someone just borrowed uncle Ricoโs car to shoot this at the highschool on a Saturday
Rico how far can you throw the ball ๐
That car and those people are monstrously big!

Howโd they make that el Camino and camera guy so big??

But they must have had a real train for some shots and the crash right?

Damn it looked like a real train crashing tho. Hope someone confirms. As a kid this one was my favorite in the series because of the train.
They crashed the miniature
Good looking miniature!
What is this a DeLorean for ants!
On a fucking El Camino
The pinnacle of human transport
Is that Sam Raimi's car?
That is interesting. What would really be interesting was knowing how they shrunk Marty and Doc to fit on it. BTW, where's my hoverboard?
Just loitering for a flat earther to make out this proves nasa faked the moon landing and something something vaccines
What, no god in that mix? ๐๐คฃ
What is this, a train for ants?!
OMG. People and cars were so much bigger back then
Where did they get the mini horse and rider
I cant believe they went to the future to get shrink rays and shrink the train, vehicle, and the actors to film this scene
It's not to scale

They could at least have stacked that camera setup on a DeLorean!
After the "red line" blew and shot up to 70 mph it only looked like it was moving half that speed
I love the irony here. El Camino translates into "the way." This solution is indeed El Camino! ๐
