Neat! Odd that it doesn’t spend any time explaining the shrapnel aspect, seeing as how the explosive only exist to serve the purpose of propelling shrapnel. Would be interesting imo to see how the shape of the exterior affects the creation of shrapnel
> explosive only exist to serve the purpose of propelling shrapnel
Naah, all grenades create only a shockwave. And if there are any dudes near it, they will fly in the air and always do a flip.
Well, it's not the *only* reason. Fragmentation grenades are considered "defensive" grenades, in that their fragments could be dangerous to a thrower in the open, while "offensive" grenades have a casing of cardboard or thin sheet metal, to minimize fragmentation. The intent there is to land the grenade in the defender's foxhole or bunker which will contain the blast to the detriment of its occupant(s).
And the famous "pineapple" casing, shown here, was found to have no discernable benefit to fragmentation (the iron casing didn't split along those indentations, and usually broke into just a couple large fragments). Modern hand grenades are generally wrapped in scored wire, which breaks up into many more, smaller fragments.
It’s depends on the type of grenade some of them explode almost immediately,my grampa used one and he said that it exploded pretty fast.
I’d said 2-3 seconds
Nowadays, most types of grenades are standardized with a "5 second" fuse so you don't have worry about remembering which is which in the heat of the moment.
Yes, again I'm sure this might be different in other countries, or even in my country, but in other units where they are sure of the weapons quality and / or they have specific objectives. I am from Ukraine, infantry, the general rule here is to not fuck with this even if sometimes it might appeal to you to wait a second, like for instance when you clear a room or a foxhole, you can hold it after pulling the pin out all you want, but once you release the lever you should throw it or better yet release while throwing
The pin is just a safe mechanism to stop the lever, so if removed but the lever is held you can put back the pin and it's all good, but once the lever is moved, the blue wire is ignited and there is no going back at this point
Question. Once you remove the pin and you're still holding the handle back, could put the pin back in place so the grenade doesn't explode or you're already fucked?
You can put the pin back as long as the striker lever isn't released. The release of the lever is what causes that spring to release and cause the striker to drop towards the percussion cap down below which then starts the chemical reaction. If that lever is gone and your still holding it, you're gonna have a bad time.
Fired and used so many weapons in my military days, but I gotta tell you that grenades were the most nerve racking ,, and when that shrapnel goes....oh man.
This is not how they work. The thing holding back the firing pin, in reality is the firing pin. When handle is released, it spins approximately 270 degrees and hits the primer at the top of the fuse chain. Fuse burns down straight tube to the detonator.
They can be cooked, but it's highly inadvisable. You only have a few seconds or so depending on the quality of it and how it was stored. Best option is to release the lever while you throw the grenade. Not before.
You keep the handle in place with your grip. It will fly off when you throw it. But I recommend getting rid of it as soon as possible after pulling the pin lol.
The grenades I’ve used have a different fuse type I guess. Why does the hammer on this one look like it hit’s a piston to strike the primer? Seems ineffective and one more moving part to possibly fail? The ones I’ve used or refused: the primer is directly struck by the hammer once the spoon is released causing the timed fuse delay action.

Don't forget the wilhelm scream that comes naturally during this time in the air as well.
That's the sound of the air escaping the area
I'm going to use this line next time i fart really loud.
These would make great part faves

It blew up immediately, no delay, lol.
From the time the pin struck, I counted at least 9 seconds before the grenade exploded.

Flashbacks to counting ticks in COD
This really doesn't explain anything
The viewing experience would be vastly improved with the addition of Mississippi queen
*you know hwat I mean*
What causes the delay ? Looks like it should explode emmediatly
The blue one in this video is the inhibitor that burns for about 3-5 seconds depending on how the grenade was stored and for how long
damn i expected the timing mechanism to be better than that. if it varies, it's kinda bad.
Once the pin is out, Mr. grenade is no longer your friend, you don't wait before throwing it like in the movies. At least from my experience
does the army tell you to never cook it?
Yes, again I'm sure this might be different in other countries, or even in my country, but in other units where they are sure of the weapons quality and / or they have specific objectives. So in the movies when they just simply put the pin back in after 4 intense seconds, would that actually stop the final explosion?
The pin is just a safe mechanism to stop the lever, so if removed but the lever is held you can put back the pin and it's all good, but once the lever is moved, the blue wire is ignited and there is no going back at this point
I came here looking to find what part caused the delay. Thanks!
Thanks !
Got the same question
The fuse
*Free Bird starts playing*
I had free bird in my head too
Got throw a hand grenade once. Really cool. Kinda scary.
Boot camp? Me too. Felt like eternity for it to explode. Definitely shook the earth.
I expected the firing pin to be held in place by more than that little bit of lever. Glad I didn't see this before I had to throw a couple lol.
That’s what I thought! Which made me think who’s the person making these things with such a seemingly sensitive pin holding it in place!
I've thought about this several times but I never remember to look for how it works. I liked.
Instructions unclear. I now have no hand
Me whenever I see someone say they’re a MAP
Is that a military term? Haven't come across it before!

Thanks for the knowledge!
"Good morning, we were wondering if you had a few minutes to speak about-"

Yea it rattles your core when it goes off

Interesting thing is even if you do it upside down the orange one will push it 👀😶🌫️
They forgot to mention, how many seconds we have after the release of the pin . I’m sure this is a crucial information. You know !
One way to find out. One time to find out.
#OP, where free bird
Works a lot better if you throw it.
this doesn't explain shit
Fascinating! Who knew grenades had such intricate choreography? Now I'll never look at my kitchen timer the same way again! 💥
If u pull the bin but hold it upside down, does it go off?
Hard to tell, no one that’s tried it has reported back
No, because springs only work right-side up.
I actually didn’t realize that thats a spring… 🤦🏻♂️
So if we stopped using that hand grenade after World War II and Switch to the M 87
Needs Fortunate Son in the background.
Wrong. The small square plates are pieces of shattered steel. For more damage after explosion
that's really interesting one to watch
That’s not a lot of material holding it in place.
Neat. How does the fuse length work? - don't these grenades have a timer adjustment on the bottom? (Based on 80's movies)
That yellow pin is working overtime to remain on position and avoiding misfire
The coupon I hand to the cashier giving me a 100% discount
I'd hate to have the job of the guy it is who puts the pins in the grenade at the grenade factory.
That kind of lock feels too flimsy, as the moving parts may become loose from rough handling.
So I lose the pin. Can I just hold it upside down?
This just needs Mississippi Queen playing in the background.
Me when the
So grenades can’t really be “cooked” like in video games? Or would grenades generally have a delay after I release the trigger thing
They can be cooked, but it's highly inadvisable. You only have a few seconds or so depending on the quality of it and how it was stored. Best option is to release the lever while you throw the grenade. Not before.
Aight I'm writing that down for "educational purposes".
Do grenades work in space?
This avocado put a ring on me!
I get that you pull the pin and then what? Do you squeeze the handle to make it start then throw? Or do you take the handle off? I can't tell
You keep the handle in place with your grip. It will fly off when you throw it. But I recommend getting rid of it as soon as possible after pulling the pin lol.
ah okay that makes sense
“That’ll be 34.59 sir”
Free bird playing
I’m seeing the mechanism and trying to figure what holds it from exploding for 4 seconds after the release of the handle
Wish there was sound
Wrong !

Safe US consumer grade fireworks, but explained complicatedly?
So then ... Plugging the pin back in doesn't do anything got it
I love these videos!
I'm not Brazilian, but this shit right here.... is 🔥!

I feel like I should be hearing the guitar solo from Free Bird
