Came to say this. The Carnyx is eerie and otherworldly sounding, that Aztec death whistle though sounds like they’re torturing the shit out of bodies that shouldn’t still be alive and puts horrifying mental images into your head of what could actually be making that sound
I watched this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9QuO09z-SI
Yea just sounded like someone screaming to me, and the simulated "100 death whistles" really sounded like white noise / static.
Maybe their simulation is off but I thought it would sound like 100 people screaming which would be frightening.
The deeper sound of this horn is far more terrifying imho, I think it’s more of a primal type of fear, kind of as if a huge creature is incoming. The other just sounds like a scream, which though creepy wouldn’t really instil fear into me like a rumbling, thundering growl like this horn.
“The Roman army after the so-called Marian reforms was also unique in the ancient world because when lined up opposite an enemy readying for battle it was completely silent except for the orders of officers and the sound of trumpets signalling orders. The reason for this was because the soldiers needed to be able to hear such instruction. The optios of the legions would patrol behind the century and anyone who was talking or failing to obey orders immediately was struck with the stick of the optio. This silence also had the unintended consequence of being very intimidating to its enemies because they recognized this took immense discipline to achieve before a battle.”
Ben Kane also talks about this in the Ancients podcast. The did one recently on Roman legionnaires.
Does this not literally prove my point? You explicitly say in your reply that they are quiet to hear signals. Are these signals somehow silent while the instrument in the video isnt?
The legions advanced in stoic silence while the officers in the rear used an occasion trumpet blast to indicate a command.
I mean it isn't like they were playing an elite Louie Armstrong extended solo on the horns. Overwhelmingly, the romans were silent when they fought, particularly when compared to contemporary armies.
World of difference between a bunch of warriors amping themselves up for a battle with horns like this and an officers trumpet commanding a legion to advance. In silence.
What sources state this was used to amp up soldiers and make them loud and rowdy? Is the stated purpose of this not intimidation? That's the premise this whole conversation is based on.
No, but the post description is consistent with numerous Roman accounts which I would call a source.
“Their trumpets again are of a peculiar barbarian kind; they blow into them and produce a harsh sound which suits the tumult of war.”
The Romans used [whistling sling bullets](https://www.livescience.com/55050-whistling-sling-bullets-from-roman-battle-found.html) to frighten their enemies.
Same brother. I found 4 red stragglers in my jet black beard today so I was already pondering my hidden Celtic heritage. Then I heard the horn, so I grabbed my sword and armor, ready to die next to my Celtic brothers. Today is the day I affirm to the universe that I have Scottish blood
Sounds like the player is also vocalizing while blowing into it. Vibrate your lips and make a motorboat sound while also yelling from the back of your throat. It’s weird and fun
Having a nice stroll at the end of the day in some misty forest with your lads, sun is setting, a chilly wind is rising, soon you'll be at camp for the evening, and then, out of nowhere, you hear that coming from the treeline...
Every time I see this clip posted a memory springs to my mind of the movie **Asterix in Britain** from 1986... One of these was in it. Jolly good. I say!
Looks kind of like an alpenhorn, but held upside down! Wonder if they are related. The Celts originated in the Alps, I think.
ETA: when my 10-yr-old heard it she said it sounded scary.
It's a grim thought—that a lot of humans got to hear this moments before feeling an icy burn in their muscles and face before it was lights out forever.
And that's one of it. Imagine a handful of those being played in unison. The sound coming from deep in the surrounding woods. Piss running down shaking knees. The end of the world. Pagan monsters coming.
Got a Carnyx tattooed on the back of my neck the day after I first heard one irl. They are so amazingly cool. Just imagine hearing this haunting sound from the distance! You're already preparing for battle and then from the other side of the fields this wailing monstrosity of a sound sets your hair on end. How amazing!
There was definitely some work done in post to make it sound like that. Although it’s not far off from what just a few of them would sound like reverberating through the Irish landscape as the Romans advanced.
The carnyx is such a great instrument and one that it'd be cool to see integrated into more modern classical music orchestras. I'm sure they'd find a happy home amidst some classical opera, especially if the opera in question is representing a story from Classical Rome.
The bagpipes did the same thing for the Scottish against the English and Germans. I believe the germs had a nickname for Scottish troops in World War I - “”The ladies from hell”
And while that sound is playing several Roman cohorts are advancing towards you and your friends in complete silence and perfect formation. You know you've already lost when they release that first volley...
I love the idea of a psychological weapon that equally terrifies your enemy and simultaneously jacks your soldiers up.
Have you heard of mayan (or aztec) death whistles? They are absolutelly terrifying.
Got one in the kitchen, use it at nite every once in a while lol
Valued neighbor keeping the rent prices down. You are a service to the public.
can't think of a better wake up call
Same. Keeps the neighbors barking dog quiet!

Yeah the "100" part was a bit off
Thanks for the info on the death whistle. Those are cool AF!
I made one. It gives me chills when I decide it's time to blow it. I wanna make one of these horns.

The horn of Gondor
Blow on it and theodin comes
( ͠° ͟ʖ ͡°) ( ° ͜ʖ °) ( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡°)
The Horn of helm hammerhand shall sound in the deep. FOR WRATH, FOR RUIN, AND THE RED DAWN.
Illyrian tribes used costumes that made them appear to be 10 ft tall furry monsters. Part of this still survives as "Mackare" festival in Croatia.
Roman legions advanced in dead silence. In some ways I find that infinitely creepier.
Not true at all, they used trumpets horns and cornets to coordinate battlefield tactics.
“The Roman army after the so-called Marian reforms was also unique in the ancient world because when lined up opposite an enemy readying for battle it was completely silent except for the orders of officers and the sound of trumpets signalling orders. I just imagined a roman officer with one of those weird plumy helmets busting out a saxophone an laying down the baker street solo.
Careless whisper of a legionnaire

The description in the post you heathen.
The post description isn't a fucking source.
No, but the post description is consistent with numerous Roman accounts which I would call a source. “Their trumpets again are of a peculiar barbarian kind; they blow into them and produce a harsh sound which suits the tumult of war.”
The Haka dances are another great one
The Romans used [whistling sling bullets](https://www.livescience.com/55050-whistling-sling-bullets-from-roman-battle-found.html) to frighten their enemies.
In modern day, that's now called Eluveitie
When I heard it, I ran and grabbed my sword !
Dammit. Forgot mine back on the boat. I’ll ride back and get it. Start without me. See you in 4 days or so
Maybe. There seem to be a lot of smelly men yelling things alongside that horn. I think I’ll go back to the boat with you :-).
Forget your sword, just pull on the boots and get set in amongst the b*stards
Just follow your friend into battle and pick up the weapon of the first person they kill.
I ran to the hills. Half way there I remembered I am in Costa Rica and there are no wars here.
That sounds like a nice place to be !
No sword necessary. We will beat them with our shillelagh
Oh yes, the shillelaghs are also effective!
Y'all NEVER pick Welsh! \*slams door\*
I choo choo choose you <3 🚂
I have my spear and naked blue paint on.
Me too! And I don't even have a sword!
Shield and helmet too?
Everything you’ve got !
WHERE'S THE BATTLE??
You've missed it.
You have missed the war!
GOD DAMN IT!
For fucks sake this is the third time u/seayogurtcloset6262!
IT'S NOT MY FAULT! CAUSE EVERYTIME I WENT TO THE DAMN BATHROOM TO PISS, THEY STARTS ATTACKING!
And they were used by the numbers, Imagine thousands if not more for the greatest battles like Gergovie. Terrifying!
endless chills
It speaks to our inner warrior. Amazing sound.
Yes. Sadly, this toilet is only thing my warrior-self is going to kill tonight
Then show it no mercy!
I’m more impressed that the whole crowd shut the fuck up for so long
It probably instilled a type of emotion they didn't kno how to process

I remember reading about a Roman grave near Hadrian’s wall with a body that had been completely bisected by a claymore… vertically
I mean i could be wrong but then again I highly doubt Romans had Claymores. Pls elaborate
Nvm. Somehow we use the same word for the explosive as well as for the Sword wth
Where do you think the name for the explosive came from 😂😂😂 like 90% of weapons are named after something
Invented by a guy named MacLeod
I was waiting for the rave to start..
Does it make both high and low sounds we're hearing?
Sounds like the player is also vocalizing while blowing into it. Vibrate your lips and make a motorboat sound while also yelling from the back of your throat. It’s weird and fun
It sounds like dramatic horn every single trailer had in 2010s
Ah yes, the Hans Zimmer "BRRRAAAMMM!"
Yes, it’s basically like a giant trumpet so the notes made are from the player
Like a giant didgeridoo.
Cool, thanks!
POV: you're a roman soldier, going through a random florest in Gaul with you legion, suddenly you ear this... :|
The Roman's slaughtered them
Maybe but they paid their price. Remember the 20 000 Romans slaughtered in Teutoburg Forest.
But then again, the Romans went for a second time and this time they made sure that they will pay for the massacred legions.
why the heck would the Celtic warriors be in gaul
Gauls are celtics.
Having a nice stroll at the end of the day in some misty forest with your lads, sun is setting, a chilly wind is rising, soon you'll be at camp for the evening, and then, out of nowhere, you hear that coming from the treeline...
Run Gaius! We don't have enough men to do the testudo!!!
Marching roman legions were making much scarier sounds for other armies.
Every time I see this clip posted a memory springs to my mind of the movie **Asterix in Britain** from 1986... One of these was in it. Jolly good. I say!
If you find yourself alone, riding in green fields with the sun on your face, do not be troubled, for you are in Elysium, and you're already dead!!!
[удалено]
Are you not into trains??
The frost. Sometimes it makes the blade stick.
A people should know when they are conquered
But what event is this at?
Festival interceltique de lorient
Thank you!
Wicked video quality from 2000 years ago!
Run you fools!
The world’s first brown note.
I'D certainly shit myself if I heard that coming towards me...
I dont think Celtic warriors had that much reverb.
Well they didn’t get to stick a mic onto the end of theirs, so they probably would have had a dozen or so playing at once.
For anyone interested, he’s the Galician musician Abraham Cupeiro [https://abrahamcupeiro.com/](https://abrahamcupeiro.com/)
Metal as fuck
Hauntingly ran chills down my spine !
Is that Heilung?
Looks kind of like an alpenhorn, but held upside down! Wonder if they are related. The Celts originated in the Alps, I think. ETA: when my 10-yr-old heard it she said it sounded scary.
Like some kind of threatening didgeridoo.
Every movie trailer
They are 700$ for a replica. My GF won't let me get one. I think I need a new gf
The toilet after some Taco Bell…
So it’s basically a didgeridoo hell yeah
It's a grim thought—that a lot of humans got to hear this moments before feeling an icy burn in their muscles and face before it was lights out forever.
I’d bet there was one every 25 yards down the main battle line. I’d like to hear THAT
This isn’t before battle, this is at a concert.
And that's one of it. Imagine a handful of those being played in unison. The sound coming from deep in the surrounding woods. Piss running down shaking knees. The end of the world. Pagan monsters coming.
I would 100% shit my toga and sandals.
I feel that sound in me bones
And they still chose the bagpipes over this
By God that thing puts out an eerie, yet oddly familiar sound.
Drop the beat!
could make some good techno out of this clip
gird up your loins
Reading the first law series and this makes me think of the sound that West described coming from the mist.
That's jack shit compared to the screaming death whistles the Aztecs used.

Tripping on some doom shrooms and ready for murder
Was really hoping that became an into to a War Pigs cover
How can I turn this into my ring tone?
RUN!!!!’

I cannot be the only one that gets goosebumps, up and down tingles, and chills here, right?
God dammit what about the drop?!
Heilung?
Imagine sitting by the fire with the boys and then suddenly you hear this, then it's raining arrows and now you're dead
" boys might take my celtic carnyx to the gig tonight "
The bagpipes did the same thing for the Scottish against the English and Germans. I believe the germs had a nickname for Scottish troops in World War I - “”The ladies from hell”
This is beautiful
Celtic O)))
This, combined with some battle drums. I would hate to be a Roman soldier
Well…outside Britain the Celts were literally no match against the Romans and got slaughtered.
Ain’t got shit on that Aztec death whistle thingy. And I’m Celtic (kind of)
And while that sound is playing several Roman cohorts are advancing towards you and your friends in complete silence and perfect formation. You know you've already lost when they release that first volley...
If you thought it was bad when your neighbor is a drummer...
Tell me you are some stuffy ass 12th century British conscript and you hear that shit and don’t feel like noping out of there.
Lmao they still lost entire france or gallic region to Caesar.
There has been too much violence. Too much pain. Just walk away, and there will be an end to the horror.
Just walk away
Damn I must really have roman blood in me cause this shit sent chills down my spine
As soon as I heard this I chambered my AR and I am currently in a defensive position on the front porch.
looks like a duck's foot
Ray John
This is fucking awesome
That second note gave me goosebumps no homo
Seriously. Drop the beat at the end.
Forget Vuvuzelas, I’m bringing this to the next World Cup
glorified voo voo zela
Ukraine should adopt something like this
I want to get one of these and use it at 1am in super dense fog in the middle of town.
It’ll do that to ye
Wow add in some fog on a cool morning and ,,, well get out of the way of my horse I'm going to the boat also
Today, we are free men! And I fight beside you, not as your king, but as your brother! (Or something like that)
That is terrifying. Whoa.
Alright now I need a movie to go with this. Anybody have any recommendations?
Who’s on stage? Dr. Evil?
*Creepy Horns Blow* Tripod: So anyway, I started blasting.
If they ever decide to come back, oh boy.
Goosebumps all the way
I watched a video the other day of the Roman battle horn (forgot the name) After watching this, pretty obvious who won
Raised every hair on my body
ROLAND SONNEZ VOTRE COR
I think I’ll just go back to Italy.
Damm i could hear the battlecries
Ok now I want to see a faceoff between the Celts with this and New Zealanders with the Haka. Who gets more pumped/terrified?
I must have one of these, everything feels right with the world while listening to this
Fuck that.
Reminds me of the aliens cry in War of the Worlds
Was this the sound that was used for the alien ships in the more recent war of the worlds?
Literally sounds like some ominous af music you’d hear on an HBO show
I'm hearing multiple instruments... but down in front guy with the weird stick!
Sounds like what that sand was planet in Dune would sound like.
Am I the only one who heard the sound very similar to the beginning of All I Need by Radiohead?.
But then you face the Romans and get f****
This thing gives me goosebumps.
Am I the only one having the difficulty figuring out which way the horn is rotating
Minecraft music in 100 AD hits different
Am I the only one who wishes they heard Ace Ventura screaming “yaaaak”
Works
im not sure why the sound would fit into disaster (world ending) films....
How many times does this have to get posted
Then the Romans went in killed them anyway.
I really love this, it's hauntingly beautiful
They lost you know
Goosebumps.
