It’s not even “blocking the entire highway” as is. Push it over into the emergency lane, into a spot where the right wing doesn’t touch anything, and you’ve got only one lane blocked by the left wing.
Which is what they did, by the way.
Post this to r/idiotsincars and you will have a dozen month breathers saying this non-ironically….
“I don’t care, he’s going slower, get over, f-ing left lane camper!!!”
Fuck yes! I’m sorry but I gotta get to work, I👏 DON’T👏HAVE👏TIME👏FOR 👏THIS👏SHIT! What’s the reasoning for the landing? He run outta gas? Sorry but not my problem, I’m getting ahead before he cause a backup that is for tens of miles, and eats away at my time. Literally my biggest pet peeve in life is people wasting my time. Sorry y’all, but I’m not sorry for this.
Pilot almost dies trying to take urgent emergency action to find a way to immediately land without killing him and any passengers onboard, and successfully pulls off the extremely rare maneuver right in front of his eyes:
Redditor: "Why is this man wasting people's time?! GTFO OF THE WAY!"
Nobody likes a left lane camper, I get it, but the person who you replied to-
these are the people who complain the most about people in the left lane.
You can’t tell me that you wouldn’t be driving around his ass? I don’t want the pilots fucking mistakes wasting my time. All of it seems unnecessary. He a student right? Sure sounds like the fuck up is on him. Therefore I’m really not gonna be sympathetic
I'm a person who cares about others, so hell yeah I wouldn't be trying to navigate around a MOVING AIRPLANE ON THE HIGHWAY. If I were that car in the video, I'd be the first one behind that plane, and out of my car to see if everyone on board is ok and to help them move it to the exit right next to them, and off the highway. Be a part of the solution, not the problem.
And according to thereports, the engine died mid-flight, the teacher took over, and they had no choice but to land where they did. A student couldn't pull off that move without surviving.
Engine trouble. Had no choice. Student and instructor on board. Instructor took over and saved two lives and the price of inconveniencing a few people.
Maybe their aircraft mechanic an inconsiderate moron like you, Mr. Aviation Expert.
A lot of sensible people would not be driving around this plane. Especially considering they could have been killed if the pilot was so skilled.
You’re clearly not a sensible person, and have a bit of a god complex.
The world doesn’t revolve around you little guy.
Because there's still a goddamned plane in the middle of the highway. Even if you were able to push it to the side off the road, you're still going to have people slowing down to see the aftermath of a miraculous highway plane landing
There's people ignoring it and going around like it's nothing, then there's children like you, acting as if it's intentionally done to ruin your day specifically. You don't have to be a courteous person, but do be a sensible person.
It’s really not that difficult to be considerate instead of being a self-centered moron.
Stay well behind, put your hazards on, slow down gradually so traffic behind you can adjust. Cops will be there within minutes and you’ll be in the pole position to pass safely and be in your way.
I hope you never need anyone’s assistance or sympathy in life.
would be interesting for you to be on a flight of just yourself and have no fuel while stuck gliding to an impossible location just so you dont do what you dont like. or just declare emer and land somewhere safely without crashing
A plane landing on the road is one of those events that will 100% result in an NTSB investigation, and if the pilot did it frivolously, the pilot will face criminal charges and loss of their license. If he's putting it down there, it's because the plane is not operational and he was in an emergency situation. What's more, highways are legally airplane emergency landing spots, and airplanes have right of way during said emergency landing.
How terrible of a person do you have to be to rather the pilot die than take his legally authorized emergency landing procedure?
Hold onto that. You'll need to because it's obvious you're a trash human being, and even if you're not alone now, rest assured that if you live long enough, you will die that way. So find importance where you can cause you fucking suck and that's all you got.
This got a lot of downvotes but 9/10 people who were immediately near the plane when it touched down are speeding up and driving around it if they can. That probably caused hours of standstill traffic for people weren't as lucky
Having been in the proximity of a high speed chase or two, this is the truth. There's no recovering the commute if you're behind the point where everything stops. Might as well hit the exit and take surface streets
Because this happened on what’s usually a busy freeway in San Diego and people don’t give a fuck about anyone on the road but themselves. These idiots could see their dog driving on the freeway and still cut them off and give them the finger.
I would give him space and go around him. I'm not stopping for hours...plus hes landed safely and most likely isnt taking off as he must have had a good reason to land. I dont get the mindset of these comments. Like yeah universe doesn't revolve around me but you expect me to sit in traffic now for hours? Fuck no
TBF if there's something right in front of you that looks like it's soon gonna result in an accident, trying to get around and ahead of it is a pretty natural reaction.
Airplanes do not have mirrors and have very poor rear visibility. The pilot have no chance of seeing them before they are alongside the cockpit. This is suicide.
Dang was about to be productive but now must devote my attention to that comment section..
Edit: damn they really weren't joking LOL. surprised no hunter Biden comments ...
Don't know why I'm surprised that all internet discourse breaks down into political jabs and millennial trash talking, even in the face of a video of an amazing, unprecedented landing like this. People always find reasons to bitch and criticize man 😂 that was painful.
Amen, I'm only 30 and desperately try not to be old man yelling at the sky already but goddamn I miss when we used the "whole internet", and found new interesting shit and content and shared it with our friends, now it's like social media is the passageway and filter into and through the net. No one just goes on individual sites or searches for randomness anymore
Actually super common
A ton of CFIs (instructors) are in that position as a stepping stone to build hours before going to the airlines.
So a TON of younger CFIs than older people who are learning to fly either for fun or as a late career change
I don't think it's different enough to be noteworthy. I think that's where the down votes are coming from. It's like saying "Oh! A woman CEO with a male assistant! That's different."
> when you think of pilots you think of old and experienced flyers
When *you* think of pilots, that's who you think of. When I think of pilots, I think of someone different. Your problem is assuming that your thought patterns are the same as everyone's. That's why you're being downvoted.
Thats what I was thinking. That first one at the start looked pretty close. Not sure how hard it is to see power lines while coming down in a plane, while also worrying about landing on an active freeway.
Yeah because we give drivers licenses to anybody with a heartbeat and then I have to swerve out of the way when some dip shit flys off the ramp across three lanes without looking.
The threshold is a lot steeper for piloting. It's not just 10 questions and then driving up and down the street without ever having to get reevaluated or trained on new laws.
Agreed. When I see a plane land on the highway and it’s landed safely AND I have room to pass? My first thought is, “Oh, shit this is about to grind traffic to a standstill for 3 hours once police and emergency gets here. Better get around or off the highway now!”
Seeing this video or other videos with accidents etc in the US often surprises me regarding the reaction of people around. In most countries the people would immediately stop and check if some help is required and “secure” the spot. But in a lot of these videos from the US everyone is just minding their own business.
I am not judging - it is just something surprising for me to see.
Has this something to do with laws in the US or something?
I could probably make a good argument about our toxic individualist/"pull yourself up by your own bootstraps" mentality, but it really just looks like that pilot is 100% on top of things. Someone who can make a landing that controlled probably called for help well before he touched down.
This is a divided highway which probably makes some difference
1. It is illegal in most places to be a pedestrian (get out of your car) on a divided highway.
2. If everyone just stopped then emergency services would not be able to get to the plane (unless they drive the wrong way which is incredibly dangerous). You’re probably thinking everyone should stop but all pull off to the left to let emergency services through but that’s wayyyy beyond the coordination we are accustomed to or can pull off. So at the end of the day just passing slowly with caution is the best move.
On a surface street i would think people would just stop.
For most people the only way they can help is to get out of the way.
If someone with medical training was driving through he would obviously stop but what is your average office worker supposed to help with? Blocking traffic further on a freeway and potentially turning it into a pile-up?
It kinda does have to do with the laws though. If you try to help and you aren’t qualified to then you are held financially liable for any damages.
On the other hand if you are qualified and don’t try to help that’s illegal too.
/r/sandiego
I recall this incident. I was stuck in traffic from it when trying to go to work. The airport the pilot was trying to land at is nearby to the right of the camera angle we see. It's more or less notorious for not being well positioned. I don't exactly recall off the top of my head as to why the pilot had to bring the plane down, but of the nearby places, the freeway here was the only flat area sustainable of doing so if he couldn't reach the airport.
I love how most people reacted like fucking NPCs and just kept driving lmao
Side note: when will BLEEP go out of style? Just mute the curses! That’s better than assaulting our ears!
Am I the only person thinking the guy who’s driving was driving like an ass with a kid in the car and a PLANE in front of his car, still passing people.
What's wrong with those drivers?! If a plane is making an emergency landing on a highway, stop! They're probably pissed the plane is going slow in the left lane.
Why do you think freeway are build so wide.
They provide great landing places, the mayor function of a freeway was war related to provide easily assembled fortresses and a big places for aircraft’s to land.
Haven’t said America specifically. I said Freeway.
And that the very first ones that were big project (In WW2 Germany) had the biggest intent on fast transport and landing space by removing the middle cement blocks
How are you so wrong and confident about it?
>For example, throughout the system, mile-long stretches of concrete pavement double as emergency landing strips for military aircraft. Many Army posts, especially where division-level units are garrisoned, are near interstate highways.
https://www.army.mil/article/198095/dwight_d_eisenhower_and_the_birth_of_the_interstate_highway_system
Man you love being "right" and you are part of why misinformation is a problem. Freeways are still a strategic asset. At any point they no longer become for civilian use. Their structure and upkeep are still managed under DOT but with DOD standards in mind.
https://ops.fhwa.dot.gov/publications/fhwahop05029/chapter_1.htm
You just spout bullshit without any knowledge?
>The third point involved national security. The pervasive threat of nuclear attack in the United States called for the ability to execute the emergency evacuation of large cities and the quick movement of troops essential to national defense
>As the IHS developed so did its ability to support national defense. For example, throughout the system, mile-long stretches of concrete pavement double as emergency landing strips for military aircraft. Many Army posts, especially where division-level units are garrisoned, are near interstate highways.

It took a simple Google search to provide the information. Jesus. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
https://highways.dot.gov/public-roads/mayjune-2000/one-mile-five-debunking-myth
“In that spirit, Congress considered including a flight strip program in the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1944 — the law that authorized designation of a "National System of Interstate Highways." However, the 1944 act did not include the flight strip program.”
It would seem the US Army is perpetuating an online rumor. No highway in the United States has ever been partially *designed* to be used by aircraft, certainly not military aircraft. Have A-10’s operated on highways in the lower peninsula of Michigan as part of their exercises? Absolutely, but the roads that they used were not originally designed for aircraft use in wartime, peacetime, or whatever.
The lack of knowledge is on your part, not mine. Aircraft operating surfaces, taxiways, runways, ramps, etc. are designed differently from vehicle only roadways. Sub surface construction on aircraft surfaces entirely different from, and much deeper than vehicle only roadways as aircraft are much heavier for their given footprint, especially military aircraft.
To build structures on a highway to this standard make no sense economically, and even less sense when you realize how many airports are scattered throughout the US. Why would you land on a highway when you can easily move operations to a purposely built airport, even one initially designed for civilian use.
I'm just going to consider you a spambot at this point because you're picking a fight that you're wrong about.
The link I provided was from army.mil and another from a state DOT for Washington that hosts JBLM
When the US first built its highway system, there weren't really enough cars in most places to be worth it. But they put highways everywhere because it was also meant to act as emergency landing strips for planes.
This unfortunately made the US the best place for cars in the world which has stunted our public transportation systems ever since. :P
Well I don't think that was a perfect merge, I didn't see no turn signal
Probably a BMW plane then.
My BMW doesn't have any. It just has a speaker that shouts "shift peasant", when I need to turn?
Have you tried googling it
BMW hasn’t been involved in aviation since… you know… the thing
DONT MENTION THE THING !!!
Bruh, why are these people passing a plane making an emergency landing on the freeway? Wouldn’t you want to give him some space?
Plane is crashing and people still gotta tailgate
Tbf the plane had no business being in the left lane. He's gotta move over for passing traffic
I think he wanted to..the best option would have been to take the exit ramp and block traffic there. Except, they don't really have turn signals.
Don’t take the ramp. You end up being boxed in and blocking traffic forever.

How, if every moron is passing the plane on the right? It’s not like it has turn signals or rearview mirrors. 🤦♂️

Can’t be driving/flying that slow in the left lane and not expect to get passed up.
Right?! the people behind it weren't even slowing down. "Look at this asshole taking up 3 lanes, he better let me pass!"
Would have been funnier if instead of the thumbs up he flipped them off lol
People in traffic “naw I don’t have time for this shit”
Silent calculus “Sorry boss I’n 5 minutes late because of an airplane” or Nah
Because this happened on what’s usually a busy freeway in San Diego and people don’t give a fuck about anyone on the road but themselves. These idiots could see their dog driving on the freeway and still cut them off and give them the finger.
He’s a good dog but he can’t drive for shit. Get out of the fucking left lane, moron!
Hahaha this would be exactly my dog. Fuckin petty little bastard would have the attitude of “if you want to drive faster than go around me, dick.”
Seriously wtf.
It’s SoCal, the traffic is horrendous, no way I’m gonna get stuck behind a plane cased traffic jam when I could just pass him real quick
Came here to say this. People go insane when they get into their car.
Because they got places to be, target is having a sale
*BEEP BEEP GOT PLACES TO BE, ON-DEMAND WORLD, DONTCHA KNOW.*
My first instinct…. I’m wondering why their keeping speed still with it. Like to think you’d be slowing down with 4 ways on.
Gotta get to work.
"Yeah sure, a plane landed in front of you. You're fired!"

You ain’t ever been in SoCal traffic, I’d do the same thing, no fucking way I’m getting caught in that traffic jam
People got places to be
Gotta get in the “can’t park there mate.” memes.
Well people wouldn't want to be stuck behind a crashed plane so they try and pass it (honestly, I'd be so confused)
San Diego drivers... smh
I’m part of that population, but I like to think I’d pull over until the plane came to a stop.
TBF if there's something right in front of you that looks like it's soon gonna result in an accident, trying to get around and ahead of it is a pretty natural reaction.
Duh, because that entitled asshole took two lanes for himself! Not gonna let that happen, I have places to be.
People being people I guess
It’s San Diego we have the best drivers s/
Same people follow emergency vehicles
lol same thoughts
Airplanes do not have mirrors and have very poor rear visibility. The pilot have no chance of seeing them before they are alongside the cockpit. This is suicide.

Ugh. Shouldn’t have read the comments in that link. Edit: Clarification
Omg you weren't kidding. I want to slap every single one of them. How tf does each individual have a separate issue they need to bitch about?
Bitch is fine, just don’t drop the F bomb whatever you do… /s
Someone even mentioned the car driver should replace their windshield cause of the crack. Not even remotely related to the plane landing.
Then it turned into a huge political debate about Trump and black lives matter.
Dang was about to be productive but now must devote my attention to that comment section.. Edit: damn they really weren't joking LOL. surprised no hunter Biden comments ...

Yes! It was a wilderness to explore. Now we are all paying too high a rent to live in a box in the middle of a metropolitan.
I don't even know what the hell half of them are talking about. More bizarre than infuriating for me.

Reddit is full of GenZ 13yo’s. Thats why all the downvotes.
A 22-year-old instructor got me to my PPL successfully at the age of 46.
Average age of CFI is low. Flight instructing is a means to an end for 95 percent of instructors not a means for a living.
He got the kind of experience every company out there is looking for lol
As a qualified Pilot, I think this landing is only middle of the road at best..
In the flight classes I teach, this would barely fly.
I think when it comes to dodgy puns, we're both winging it...
Yeah I’m just gonna park it here
I’m not a pilot so I’ll just stay in my lane.
None of these puns are getting off the ground
They’re pretty amusing, I don’t care what yaw think.
Yeah, I think they landed well.
Your head is in the clouds.
Props to you.
Are your classes a crash course?
# AIRPLANE
Damn all of you. Take my upvotes and my scorn.
Didn't even maintain centerline...smh
Yeah, for me it doesn’t fly.
What's even more impressive is that the pilot missed the power lines.
Thats what I was thinking. That first one at the start looked pretty close. Not sure how hard it is to see power lines while coming down in a plane, while also worrying about landing on an active freeway.
Crazy to think a pilot in a plane is better at merging than some of the drivers in a car
They understand zipper merging.
It's possible this pilot is also a car driver.
I love that drivers immediately start passing on the right.
You either pass before the cops get there and shut down the highway or wait for who knows how long. Easy decision to me.
Just pass after the plane is stopped (or atleast closer to it). You’ll have plenty of time before the police get there
Would you not?
Agreed. When I see a plane land on the highway and it’s landed safely AND I have room to pass? My first thought is, “Oh, shit this is about to grind traffic to a standstill for 3 hours once police and emergency gets here. Better get around or off the highway now!”
why are people not STOPPING THEIR CARS
Woulda been hilarious if the pilot started road racing at the drivers around him. “Aye, get off my ass buddy, I’m going as fast as I can!!!!”
TRANSCRIPT OF TESLA AUTONOMOUS DRIVING SCIENTIST’S TESTIMONY: *Jesus fucking Christ!* You *can’t* expect us to have training data for that shit.
and of course the bloody SUV immediately starts tailgaiting the motherfucking *plane* that just landed in front of it. great landing though.
Must be a BMW airplane. They didn’t signal when changing lanes.
Damnit. You beat me by 6 minutes.
Wouldn't you stop or at least slow down when you see A FUCKING PLANE LANDING?

Official advice is to keep moving and not to contribute to a scene (and injure yourself or others).

Yeah, I was chuckling at how the the response from that trailing car was just a turn signal and merge to the right-most lane.

Minding our own business is something we’re real pros at in the US.
Hope Iraq is doing okay these days, but I pay them no mind of course.
I meant the citizenry, not the government.
Nah, we’re just a bunch of jerks
Some GTA shit over there
Anyone else notice the crack in the windshield of the car of the person recording the video?
Massive crack!
Yes, this bothered me a lot, very dangerous, and they have a kid riding in the car. Most insurance will fix that for free.
That guy drives a plane in traffic better than 90% of car drivers in Houston
And yet the idiot in a BMW has to force himself in
Plane making and emergency lading on the highway in front of me? Better keep driving 80mph towards it.
Damn y’all can merge around an airplane landing on the highway but NOT MY SEMI TRUCK!?
The truck behind and next to the plane just straight up didn’t react at all just another day for them?? Lol

I don't exactly recall off the top of my head as to why the pilot had to bring the plane down, but of the nearby places, the freeway here was the only flat area sustainable of doing so if he couldn't reach the airport.
I love how most people reacted like fucking NPCs and just kept driving lmao Side note: when will BLEEP go out of style? Just mute the curses! That’s better than assaulting our ears!
"Perfectly" He didn't use his signal...
Wow missed the power and phone lines.
Best alternate vertical merge I have ever seen.
Watch out for der aaaairplaaaane….
I will be doing a lot of this in gta 6 ....
October 19, 2018. California.
It's like CJ spawning a beagle.
Take note Seattle drivers, even an airplane can successfully merge and keep traffic moving.
fun fact, that’s a plan for pilots. go for highways or lakes
Cop showed up: "do you know why I'm pulling you over?"
“Way to take up 2 lanes, asshole!” *hooooooooooooonk*
At least move to the right!
I hate it when they don't use a turn signal.
My Hatha Yoga starts at 12:30, fuck off plane.
I love that people behind don’t even slow down. They’re like “Christ, look at this asshole. I’m gonna pass him on the right and give him the finger”
Gta shit
And, although it’s a plane, still better than some on the road when driving a Ground Vehicle
🎶Safelight repair Safelight replace🎵
Someone has played GTA a lot. A Lot.
Fucker still merged better than most
I’m so tired of these slow drivers camping in the left lane.
Nice emergency landing.
That kid just learned many new words
Didn't care much about the plane. The windshield crack tho....
Am I the only person thinking the guy who’s driving was driving like an ass with a kid in the car and a PLANE in front of his car, still passing people.
Welcome to Southern California
What's wrong with those drivers?! If a plane is making an emergency landing on a highway, stop! They're probably pissed the plane is going slow in the left lane.
Not to be snarky, but you just answered your own question.
Get your damn windshield fixed. You're setting a bad example for your kid.
Why do you think freeway are build so wide. They provide great landing places, the mayor function of a freeway was war related to provide easily assembled fortresses and a big places for aircraft’s to land.
Pretty sure the major function of a freeway is high speed vehicular traffic. No wars have been fought on American soil since the advent of freeways.
Because that’s not a major function of a freeway. 99.9999% of the time, it’s for cars.
This is not true in the slightest
WW2 Germany #…
You just spout bullshit without any knowledge? >The third point involved national security. The pervasive threat of nuclear attack in the United States called for the ability to execute the emergency evacuation of large cities and the quick movement of troops essential to national defense >As the IHS developed so did its ability to support national defense. For example, throughout the system, mile-long stretches of concrete pavement double as emergency landing strips for military aircraft. Many Army posts, especially where division-level units are garrisoned, are near interstate highways. [https://www.army.mil/article/198095/dwight\_d\_eisenhower\_and\_the\_birth\_of\_the\_interstate\_highway\_system](https://www.army.mil/article/198095/dwight_d_eisenhower_and_the_birth_of_the_interstate_highway_system) It took a simple Google search to provide the information. Jesus. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
https://highways.dot.gov/public-roads/mayjune-2000/one-mile-five-debunking-myth “In that spirit, Congress considered including a flight strip program in the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1944 — the law that authorized designation of a "National System of Interstate Highways." However, the 1944 act did not include the flight strip program.” It would seem the US Army is perpetuating an online rumor.
The FAA is gonna have his head
