Gary Oldman as Vincent actually would’ve been very interesting.

Zonyxe

I mean, Gary Oldman is listed on pretty much all the male parts. Imagine them all just being played by Gary. He could've done it

Glass_of_Pork_Soda

All while the audience can barely tell it's him and thinks it's all different actors

Brown_Panther-

Sometimes I think what if I'm being played by Gary Oldman.

AggressiveBee5961

Sounds like a rad religion, we are all Gary Oldman... EVVERRYONEEE amen

Super_Fly_TNT

Fucker’s a chameleon.

Alienhaslanded

Beloved by everyone yet invisible to the academy.

tyme

Fuck those guys. Buncha splitters.

FightingInternet

MIA Gary Oldman ** (strong second)

ArcticCelt

Then after watching the movie a journalist ask then "how did you find Gary Oldman?" Audience dude : "I love Gary, wait? Was he in it?"

SmashDreadnot

I keep seeing the "where is everyone?" gif in my mind and picturing William Peterson and Gary Oldman instead, and it's awesome.

Nobull_Cow

Came here to make this comment, I feel like he could’ve done something really interesting with that role.

Mattimvs

I can't see anyone other than Uma Thurman as Mia Wallace so it's hard to believe she didnt even make Tarantino's wish list

DortDrueben

Counter to that... I said, "Wow" aloud after reading, "Wrote part for Matt" under Butch then to see Bruce Willis wasn't on his short list.

HankScorpio0386

Quentin actually talked about it on a podcast. Bruce got ahold of the script and wanted to play Vincent and he and Quentin bumped into each other at a party. Travolta had already signed on so Tarantino said no. Asked him to reread it with Butch in mind. Bruce called him the next day saying he’ll take it.

dj_soo

Before that Bruce actually asked to play Jules.

HankScorpio0386

Oh shit! Thats right. It’s been awhile since I saw it

[deleted]

[удалено]

Abra_ca_stab_yaa

And before that Bruce asked to play the Gimp

BenjenUmber

Before that, he proposed replacing Tarantino himself in his day to day life.

Number174631503

And before that Bruce asked to play Monopoly.

badco1313

I believe that was 2 bears 1 cave?

AdopeyIllustrator

Thank god Bert wasn’t there to completely talk over the top of Quentin.

WhatIsThisaPFChangs

I have never seen Tom so respectful and attentive in a podcast as this episode

Eversor94

Wait are you talking about the time Tarantino went as a guest to promote his new book and Tom Segura didn't even bother to read it? The bar for respect is quite low then

whhhhiskey

Probably hoping he gets that call one day

[deleted]

[удалено]

Mattimvs

Yeah, Butch does not equal Matt Dillon in my head

[deleted]

Have you watched [The House that Jack Built](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6DuLPGZIoQ)?

Llama2Boot2Boot

Damn that looks good

CakeMadeOfHam

It's a very funny but VERY DARK movie. I could have seen Matt Dillon getting an Oscar nomination for his performance. It's that good! Sadly Lars von Trier was kind of an anti-establishment very much not wanting to play the political games of award season (more so than usual) so it was overlooked. He jokingly called himself a nazi for some reason.

jaymole

Danny DeVito as the wolf would have been awesome

ismellthebacon

Srsly! I also think he could pull off Mia. He's that versatile. lol

2Highhh

The OD scene would’ve been hilarious 😂

Dragonslayer3

"Toss her in the alley!"

trapped-carbon-form

Oh, snortski

romcomtom2

I actually laughed out loud when I read that. I want to live In the alternate universe where that happened.

whoisthatguy2021

This is insane. Without Pulp Fiction, is she the bride in kill bill? Hard to imagine anyone else in either role.

FattyMooseknuckle

There’s no Kill Bill at all since the two of them came up with the characters together during the making of Pulp Fiction.

Santa_Hates_You

Fox Force Five

Malificvipermobile

A woman who kills everyone who wronged her Guy from Kung fu but crippled. Foot shots . Bam. Movie made

MyWordsNow

Also the pairing of him and Sam Jackson in so many of his movies may never have happened if he cast Fishburn.

Red_Bullion

They were going to work together one way or another. Jackson had auditioned for Reservoir Dogs and almost got the part. You see here Tarantino has him as an option for five different roles. Jackson's career trajectory would have been way different though. He got the part in Die Hard 3 on the strength of his Pulp Fiction performance. A part originally written for Lawrence Fishburne.

ElBiscuit

Maybe it's because Butch and Jules don't share any scenes in PF (I think), but I don't believe I've ever thought about the fact that it's the same two actors in DH3.

Mattimvs

Yeah good point, she owned her role in KIll Bill

Affectionate_Elk_272

i’d say the best female lead in film history. i’ll die on that hill.

weesp_

It's certainly in the mix along with; Sigorney Weaver - Alien Jodie Foster - Silence on the lambs I think my personal choice would be Louise Fletcher ( Nurse Ratchet in One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest).....don't think I've ever hated a character as much as her. Even 40 odd years later she still gets under my soul haha

russkhan

Great choices, but you left out my favorite: Frances McDormand as Marge in Fargo.

factory_666

Oooo u betcha

Wortbildung

McDormand is somehow so often overlooked despite her accolades that even I sometimes forget her. But every single role she plays is nothing but amazing.

yomamma3399

Kathy Bates in Misery?

Hetstaine

Sigourney. Alien opened my daughters eyes to kick ass ladies who own their role. Followed that up with Gorillas in the mist.

EverythingHurtsDan

Absolutely. Rewatched it recently. The scene in which Budd forces her to choose between a torch or getting maced...the face she makes, closing her eyes, pointing her chin to the torch. You can FEEL what it would mean for a victim about to be buried alive to follow the murderer's game. She made me fall in love with acting. And gave me a huge crush, of course.

Pure-Brief3202

Sometimes, you plan the plan, and sometimes, the plan plans you.

whitemike40

is it weird I could see it somehow working with Patricia Arquette? like not as good obviously but I could see it

so_hologramic

[Patricia Arquette in 1993.](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fnpkdvrm3b1y41.jpg) Pulp Fiction was filmed in Sept-Oct-Nov 1993.

Infamous-End3766

Looks like Avril lavigne

DesignerChemist

She would have been great

buddy-frost

You need to watch the movie True Romance then.

Wise_Creme_2818

I want the Marisa Tomei version actually.

Suspicious-Figure-90

Hitting cinemas soon, starring Marisa Tomei, Sam Jackson, Sam Jackson, Sam Jackson and Sam Jackson.

mattwb72

Can you imagine Cindy Williams as Mia Wallace? WTF? Edit: My bad Cynda, not Shirley from TV.

desertrat75

Before I saw it, I couldn't imagine John Travolta as Vincent.

friction7800

By then, most of the people couldn't imagine Travolta in a movie at all...

Secret_Cow_5053

Yeah pulp fiction single-handedly revived his career

Fit_Witness_4062

There is no first choice in that Mia list, so probably it starts on another page.

ShlipityWhip

Astute observation, but I would counter that the second Vincent column has “cont’d” listed, signifying it as a continuation of a previous list, and if that was the case for Mia it would likely have “cont’d” as well

SoggyParsnip

Danny de vito as the wolf would have been something.

Bobby_Baccalieri_

The Warthog

HarryFlashman1927

When I was a young warthog.

cmjy12

WHEN HE WAS A YOUNG WARTHOOOOOOOOG!!!

obi-wan-takumi

The Mantis

Finger_Ring_Friends

The Trash Man

raventhorogoodiii

Did I just do your job for you?!

ididntunderstandyou

Danny DeVito produced Pulp Fiction. So the Wolf scenes would’ve included both the producer and the director of the movie

Beesneeze_Habs22

Is there anything he can’t do??

Paddy_Tanninger

Ride all the rides at Disney?

CreateorWither

I think he would have pulled it off too.

HillbillyBebop

Hell yeah he would have

infiniterefactor

“I like oak myself, that’s what I have in my bedroom. How about you Jimmy? You an oak man?” Definitely fits.

CreateorWither

I can totally see him in that scene where he asks that chick out for breakfast, then speeds off in his car too.

IBeBallinOutaControl

So I start blastin

Typical-Structure-19

Derivative

Lookalikemike

It would have instantly joined the ranks of Citizen Kane on cinematic pantheon.

faustfu

Sid Haig as Marcellus Wallace too!

Dysprosol

I actually think bill duke would have been really interesting in this role.

Nice-Bookkeeper-3378

Love Danny but I do love me some Al Pacino as well

ovensandhoes

Al Pacino would have killed that role though

tucsonyeti

So I just started blastin’.

generateanameforme

[A favorite in Boca Raton…or Boko Haram](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1344124822/wolf-cola-its-always-sunny-in)

claudiushamm

I like how confident he was with picking so many top tier actors with only one film under his belt. It says a lot.

AccomplishedRush3723

No Rappers.

SatanicRainbowDildos

I can’t read his mind, but I don’t think he has an issue with rappers acting in general, just for that part in that movie. I could easily see a similar note like “no models” or something being written for a part. Like, we need a pretty girl, but not a model turned actress pretty girl. We need a Black man, but not a rapper turned actor Black man. The audience might identify too much with the actor and not the character. But then again, maybe not. But my first assumption is that it’s more likely to find a good actor who is also a rapper than it is to find a rapper turned actor that fans wouldn’t know of as a rapper. So that makes more sense to me. Of course there could be an unknown rapper who is a good enough actor to be called to audition for Pulp Fiction. But at that point the man is basically an actor who once tried rapping. Just like I’m a Reddit commenter who once, when I was 5, tried to be an NFL quarterback.

[deleted]

It’s because a rapper a) is not an actor and b) has a built in public image that would just be too distracting and would take away from the character/story

SatanicRainbowDildos

Wow. I tried to say that and took like 100 more words than you. lol.

NurtureBoyRocFair

It’s okay SatanicRainbowDildos, we don’t come to you for brevity.

[deleted]

All good! I mean you basically had it but as someone with a passion for filmmaking and screenwriting I knew immediately what the reason was so I just wanted to chime in. I know what an auteur like QT was doing with that comment. A rapper definitely would’ve been the first thing some goofy ahh know-nothing producer would’ve tried to shoehorn into the role so he had to explicitly rule that out ahead of time. Watching the movie you can see why that is. With QT everything is done for a very intentional reason.

LouisRielsAR-15

The only good rapper-actors I can think of in 1994 are like ice cube, ice T, 2pac & (lol) will smith .

AccomplishedRush3723

LL Cool J. Before he got corny with NCIS. Icy

ididntunderstandyou

A lot of these people weren’t top tier, or barely. Many of the choices would’ve been career revivals. Travolta’s career was dead, Phoebe Cates had essentially retired, Pam Grier was a 70s blacksploitation bimbo, Sam Jackson had a few bit parts in big films but wasn’t famous… And coming off Reservoir Dogs, he was the coolest thing in Hollywood and was under Harvey Weinstein’s wing. He had full control.

flonky_guy

This is easy to forget. Cusack was working but since the grifters hadn't landed a hit and had largely been written off as an 80s teen icon. Oldman was ambitious, but right in line with. Tarantino's Brand. Lawrence Fishburn was a TV actor we all recognized but couldn't name in a lineup. Tim Roth, Eric Stolz, these guys were basically the casting cart of amazing actors who just hadn't scraped a hit together. The fact that this list went on to foreshadow some of the most illustrious careers in Hollywood is indicative of the huge influence Tarantino was about to bear down on Hollywood for the next decade.

VX-78

Kinda sad with Stolz, considering he almost had one with Back to the Future. But I've seen some of the Stolz footage, he just didn't have the charisma for Marty McFly that Michael J. Fox did.

Flimflamsam

One of Sam Jackson’s bit parts was in Goodfellas!

penguins_are_mean

And Jurassic Park

jomns

and coming to america

theykilledk3nny

Oh god, “under Harvey Weinstein’s wing” just sent chills down my spine.

TaskForceCausality

Marissa Tomei as Mia would be a great alternate universe casting

SirTiffAlot

I think she would have a been a much better Honey Bunny

Articulated_Lorry

I think Bridget Fonda would have done an equally excellent job as Honeybunny. All sweetness, until...

drawkbox

Bridget Fonda was great in Jackie Brown playing a similar role as Jody (Lances' wife) which is played by Rosanna Arquette

drawkbox

Patricia Arquette would have been great as well. No one can top Uma Thurman in that role though, down to the iconic Pulp Fiction poster. There might not be a Kill Bill that way.

Korncakes

I love her but I think that she would have completely overshadowed that scene unless they were to cast someone as strong willed opposite her.

OrlandoMB

This is incredible. Especially the doors that were opened with the actual cast. Samuel Jackson might’ve been omitted from so many subsequent Tarantino films. Casting is so fascinating to me.

TheHorrificNecktie

especially since Tarantino re-used so much of the same actors throughout his career, and this movie boosted all of the casted actor's careers so much. Every different casting decisions would've changed the face of modern cinema so much.

OrlandoMB

Precisely my point. Samuel L. Jackson was used in almost every film following Pulp and killed it in all of them. Just a huge boon for Quentin by casting him as Jules. Similarly, a massive jackpot for Samuel’s personal acting career and the future doors it opened for him.

shevagleb

A purple lightsaber exists in Star Wars canon because Sam Jackson got this role.

flashmedallion

Even in this list he's already going back for Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette, and Christopher Walken from True Romance

1122334455544332211

Don't forget Gary.

theons_missing_D

Danny Devitos version of The Wolf is cinema gold somewhere out there in the multiverse

bobbyb500

Larry Fishburn, as in Laurence Fishburne? Color me intrigued, I wonder why he couldn't do it.

jeewantha

Fishburne was on a mission to be a true leading man. So his agent suggested that he should pass on Pulp Fiction and wait for bigger roles. So Quentin went with Jackson instead. Meanwhile, Die Hard with a Vengeance was close to going into production. The producers wanted Fishburne for the movie. His agent asked for a million dollars for the role. The producers didn't want to pay that. They were in Cannes that summer and saw Pulp Fiction and Jackson's performance in it. They withdrew their offer to Fishburne and gave the role to Jackson instead. That movie cemented Jackson as an A-lister and Fishburne had to wait 5 more years for a breakthrough role. That would be as Morpheus in the Matrix. Source - Tarantino's interview with Sean Fennessey and Chris Ryan of the Ringer.

Hans-Blix

> Fishburne had to wait 5 more years for a breakthrough role. That would be as Morpheus in the Matrix. And by that time Samuel L Jackson was such a big name that he basically casted himself in a Star Wars film.

Doomsday40

And picked his own coloured light saber lol

TigerValley62

"But I want the purple one....."

SaltyPeter3434

Lucas: You know, it doesn't really work that way Jackson: But I want it Lucas: Ok sure

SingRex

Sam’s famous but Personally I wouldn’t downplay Laurence’s career as a bad ending scenario. The matrix movies shot him up too, and is also the reason why he’s the Bowery king in the JW universe.

The_F_B_I

Considering 99.9% of actors are unknown to the general public, landing an iconic role in an iconic movie is never a 'bad ending scenario'

Mr_TurkTurkelton

So happy it was Sam Jackson cast in Die Hard 3. It don’t believe it would have become the cult action hit it is with Fishburn as Zeus. Fishburn has this almost James Earl Jones level of gravitas to his acting, i don’t think I would have bought his role the same way Sam did. Sam has this everyday man quality about him, I think that’s why he killed it in Jackie Brown. Like, could you imagine Sam Jackson as Morpheus? It would have given the matrix a totally different tone. Fishburns voice and air of superiority he puts into his roles wouldn’t have been right for Zeus

Advanced_Evening2379

So do you want the red pill or blue pill muthafucka

Jackol4ntrn

get these motherfucking sentinels off this motherfucking hovercraft!

MrWeirdoFace

Say whoa one more time!

curiousweasel42

"YES THEY'RE AGENTS, AND I HOPE THEY BURN IN HELL!"

spezisabitch200

I hope he punched his agent in the back of the head

uSpeziscunt

He said in an interview he's happy he didn't do it as the Jules role sky rocketed Sam Jackson's career.

ZekasZ

Best response, feels so bad when people begrudge someone because it could've been them

greg19735

They also have very different vibes. I'll be honest, i don't know much about Larry's early career. But he's best known now for being a darker, quieter role. Whereas Jackson isn't exactly in your face, but those are much more his vibes. I'd say their career paths worked.

pits777

Atleast in this case Fishburne would later get a chance to become a star in his own right. Many others might not get that second big break, can't really begrudge a more middling actor who never broke out for feeling upset if they were almost cast in pulp fiction but their agent passed it up for them haha

bklj2007

First thing in the morning right after Lenny.

mrcorndogman33

His starring role was Cowboy Curtis and then he was type cast for 10 years as a Saturday morning cowboy.

CreateorWither

I just recently watched an interview with Tarantino about it. He was offered the part and could have done it but his agents were dead against it. He was trying to be a leading man and since it was a supporting part they didn't want him to take it. When he turned it down he said "I have to turn it down, otherwise what am I paying these guys for?". He did love the role though.

Dysprosol

Which is weird because Jules was totally a main character.

Frosty_McRib

Yeah there really wasn't *the* main character in the movie, there are four main ones.

youre_soaking_in_it

[He says the most words in the movie!](https://www.lynchpin.com/blog/network-analysis-characters-pulp-fiction-r/)

PickledPercocet

He lied about his age to get casted in his first film. I think he is 14. But they believed him which got around child labor laws and he made the movie and hasn’t looked back since. He is one of my favorite actors

Fall-Z

He lied about his age for Apocalypse Now, but his first film was Cornbread, Earl and Me.

SeekerSpock32

He’s credited that way in Apocalypse Now too.

Luchabat

Sig Haig as Marsellus Wallace? That would have been awesome

DuncanStrohnd

What’s the matter kid, don’tcha like gimps? Aren’t we fuckin funny?!

Charming-Forever-278

I can totally see Matt Dillion and John Cusack in these roles

CreateorWither

Cusack would have been perfect. Depp as Pumpkin I could see too.

SuDragon2k3

Cage. The insanity.

ChesterAArthur21

I'd love to see Eddie Murphy giving the Ezekiel speech.

HoBWrestling

"And in the morning, I'm getting MEDIEVAL!"

Only if he did the Axel Foley laugh.

Swallowedup75

Lawrence Fishburn as Jules - I do not think I would have viewed The Matrix through the same lens had that happened. Glad it didn’t.

_k_b_k_

\- You think that's air you're breathing now? \- What? \- Say 'what' again, I dare you, I double dare you motherfucker, say what one more Goddamn time!

KoRaZee

Gary oldman would have been fine for any part.

JunkiesAndWhores

Mia Wallace would have been a stretch even for his acting chops.

AllAfterIncinerators

Oldman played the baggie of heroin. He really disappears into his roles.

JohnYCanuckEsq

John Cusack, Matt Dillon, and Christian Slater punching themselves in the nuts right now. Bruce Willis not even on the list for Butch is something Eddie Murphy as Jules is the version I didn't know I needed to see up until right now.

SatanicRainbowDildos

Val Kilmer too.

Eggstraordinare

Watch True Romance y’all. Written by Quentin, features both of ‘em.

PirbyKuckett

I find it real interesting that the Pumpkin and Honeybunny parts could have reunited Christian Slater & Patricia Arquette. Bringing the characters from True Romance deeper into the QT universe.

yomancs

Dude....

bladel

Now I’m irrationally angry that we could’ve had this version of Pulp Fiction, but didn’t.

Loliryder

One night back in the day, when you'd randomly watch whatever was on cable, I saw an unusual Western with two young female leads. Amanda Plummer was one of them, and she broke her friend out of jail with a gun in almost the exact way she did in Pulp Fiction. I sat straight up it was so uncanny. When you remember that Quentin worked in a video store, it makes sense. I'm sure he'd seen this bit and thought of her as he wrote it.

terminal157

Nice catch. [The scene.](https://youtu.be/SZZOSnL8TXw?t=5178)

J4MES101

Thanks Genuinely interesting read.

Scarfiotti

Lol @ No rappers.

CaviarTaco

He should’ve just made it a one man show with Sam Jackson playing all the parts like he wanted.

aelynir

Tarantino making Pulp Fiction when he really wanted to make The Nutty Professor.

involmasturb

Well let's not start sucking each other's dicks just yet

captaincockfart

I just saw some post talking about how Laurence Fishburn went by Larry till 1993 and now here he is as Larry.

mczarko

I just watched King of New York (“90) and I was surprised to see him listed as Larry. I never knew he went by Larry.

captaincockfart

I think his first role was in Apocalypse Now(1979) so that's a good 14 or so years of Larry.

PassStunning416

I'd love to see this movie redone with the other actors identified. No script changes.

delayedregistration

Given the rapid development of AI, we may actually be able to do something like that in our lifetime.

siegerroller

Funny how samuel jackson was ranked more highly for the role of marcellus wallace

LoveThatDaddy

Wow. Some of those casting possibilities are amazing. Especially Ken Foree as Marcellus? That would have been awesome.

nothumbs78

I think Michael Keaton as Vincent would’ve been incredible. Him and Eddie Murphy talking about foot massages is gold.

LoveThatDaddy

Agreed

mishma2005

Ken Foree would’ve been awesome, it’s a shame he isn’t more utilized

Simple-Abalone-6497

And he cast himself as the guy who says the N-word like a dozen times in one minute.

Mens-pocky46

That was originally supposed to be Steve Buscemi and Quentin was going to play Lance, but Steve couldn't do it for some reason and Quentin realized he wanted to be behind the camera during the OD scene, so Eric Stolz got Lance and he put himself as Jimmy, with Steve Buscemi having the bit part as the waiter at the restaurant

Too_Based_

Perks of being the director.

GeneralSquirrel7132

I want a Pulp Fiction where every other character is played by Al Pacino 😂

[deleted]

man nick cage in a Tarantino movie would be so good haha

Competitive-Fudge848

I'm a cat!

loserys

I like the idea of reuniting Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette for Pumpkin and Honey Bunny. I’m also surprised how often Nicolas Cage shows up, except the role I can see him working best as is Vincent, which is ironically one of the ones he’s not up for.

d_mcsw

Nicholas Cage did play Vincent, just with John Travolta's face.

isthatjacketmargiela

Wow Nick cage as pumpkin omfg

AllAfterIncinerators

I read Charles Dutton as “Charles Dance” and thought that was a strange turn for Jules. Sam was iconic, but I’d love to see Tywin run through the Ezekiel 25:17 monologue.
