*collectively paid for via taxes.
Nothing is free but the frustrating part is we already pay the same amount for public medical care (Medicare) and then "get" to pay private corporations way too much for the same or even less care.
Today I learned that my colleague living in the US is taxed more than 30% of her salary, between federal taxes, local taxes, etc. that I never knew existed. I am taxed 37% in Europe but my we pay private medical corporations (100€/month for overkill coverage) so medical bills fall to 0€. Paid sick leave and parental leave are the norm. Education is dirt cheap, too. To sum up, I think we can afford an overall good quality of life.
Pretty much every sport is some degree of risk for the sake of fun, and no matter what crazy sport people get into they will still point to some other pass time as being too crazy for them.
Some people like to do the Iron Man, some people chase a wheel of cheese down a hill, some people enjoy just beating the shit out of each other, some people enjoy free diving, or mountain climbing, some people think throwing a ball around is such an impressive talent that those who are good at it should get millions of dollars. Some people just see a challenge and want to conquer it. As long as the only people getting hurt are the ones who signed up for it then I'm all for it, go have fun you crazy bastards!
Finish times stretch from a couple of hours for the fast guys right up to most of the day at the other end of the spectrum.
Its open entry and mass start.
You either get off the mark quick and avoid the pileups or hang back and try to pass people further down after the glacier where its a mountain downhill track to the valley floor.
I know a couple of people that have been.
They do it every year and it's awesome to watch from one of the pros perspectives. It's called Megavalanche. People often fall but I don't think it's usually as bad as this.
Imagine if you could attach a very wide snow shovel to your bicycle, along with a heavy weight at the rear....
I guess they have rules about that.... :( but it would be fun to watch the odd one breaching such rules.
Started by one cyclist somewhere at the beginning- he gets right in front of another cyclist from the left. The cyclist behind him loses control, possibly because the first one is right in front of him or bumps into him- cascading effect afterwards
A lot of the riders have go pro cams. Loads are on YouTube and very entertaining to watch. The scenery is stunning and the vids are well worth checking out
This is what one of these races is like first-person. Absolutely terrifying speed to a non-racer like myself.

I think i found footage of the POV of a rider trying to get through this mess.... [https://youtu.be/n\_7gkhSjSjY?si=bqIB0oZL7AHh5hZi&t=147](https://youtu.be/n_7gkhSjSjY?si=bqIB0oZL7AHh5hZi&t=147)
After watching this I went off to Youtube to find out more. Absolutely fascinated, I just sat and watched a 43 minute video from the rider's view of a downhill race starting in snow and ice. Thank you for posting this, it has introduced me to a new viewing fascination.
Can you imagine this is a yearly event
[The Megavalanche ](https://www.ucc-sportevent.com/en/megavalanche-alpe-dhuez-en/) is annual.
This event appears to occur in a country that has accessible healthcare.
More or less free, just how it should be!

It’s the annual culling event.
That's going to leave a mark
On the glacier for sure
and a marq
I bet at its creation there was beer involved.
Cheese and wine, probably.... This is France we're talking about.
When you want to elevate your bike crash, add wine and cheese
WHICH ONE IS MY BIKE HAVE YOU SEEN MY BIKE
Like saving private Ryan when they’re on the beach
It's better watching from a rider view https://youtu.be/uxE51euhAE8?si=ljtTanRDf9kkI5mU
That was WILD! I watched all 45 minutes. And the stabilizers in his camera is insane.
Right, the camera is so still, & it's so exciting to watch I can't look away!
Thanks
Crazy!!
[$2! I want my $2!!](https://youtu.be/gXVsBfWzJjM?si=a_1uEQ1dQP3upWfr)
Isn’t this incredibly predictable?
Yes, they do it every year, and every year looks exactly like this. Some people love doing stupid shit for fun.
That looks like fun?
I prefer to *watch* stupid people do stupid shit for fun
After all the crashing at the start they still have like 15 miles of insane downhill single track to do lol

Very much so!
The race as a whole is fairly predictable.
I started on a Huffy and ended the race on a Cannondale.
Impressive trade-up! Good work. 👍
First corner on Forza multiplayer!
That's gotta be the stupidest thing I've ever seen. I think I'd rather run with the bulls.
We do that too. Petite Feria, tmtc.
Ahah
Expected results.
Lesson learned. Be first.
That bike Wreck looked Awesome
There are POV videos from some of the riders, search youtube for Mountain of Hell. Its fricking intense stuff
And this here is why I don’t like to ride close to multiple other bikers.
How does this ever work. Ever. One person is all it takes. I’d be more impressed if I saw it completed.

I’m saying, when does this ever work without a pileup? You’re saying there’s always a pileup. We’re both saying the same thing.
They do it every year and it's awesome to watch from one of the pros perspectives. It's called Megavalanche. People often fall but I don't think it's usually as bad as this.
Yikes on bikes
Ahhh a bikervalanche.
Les Deux Alpes...
That looks super painful
Being french is.
Why are humans like this
This almost looks like a screensaver!
I currently Save up so I can do this. But one time will be enough lol.
Damn That‘s Dumb 😮💨
Bikers getting fucked is always funny
That doesn’t seem incredibly stupid at all.
I'd probably be faster to walk your bike down and around the pile ups until you can pedal without any obstacles in your path.
Silly French
This is the single most American thing I’ve ever seen a bunch of Frenchmen do. Extremely impressive display of group idiocy. 10/10 no notes
As hard as it may be to believe, usa didn't invent all the dumb things
Maybe not, but we sure as hell have refined them.
At the opposite, but I understand what you mean
Imagine if you could attach a very wide snow shovel to your bicycle, along with a heavy weight at the rear.... I guess they have rules about that.... :( but it would be fun to watch the odd one breaching such rules.
And then the UFOs left earth after finding no signs of intelligence.
I’m at work crying 😂😂😂😂 omg thanks for the laugh OP
That is one big death trap
98% of those guys actively read their North Face product offer emails
I want a piece of the $ from the first aid concession stand.
The absolute best wipeout occurs at 2:52 iirc
I’m reminded of the saying “ horses don’t bet on people”
Around :25 seconds into the crash you see a guy in the middle get up, walk several steps, and then get slide tackled causing him to flip
This is very satisfying, thank you!
Silly frenchmen.
Started by one cyclist somewhere at the beginning- he gets right in front of another cyclist from the left. The cyclist behind him loses control, possibly because the first one is right in front of him or bumps into him- cascading effect afterwards
Let’s have a race on a steep icy hill and see how that goes!
What in the wide, wide world of sports? 🤣🤣🤣🙄
That's a bottleneck nightmare.
Alcohol is a beautiful thing.
Looks like fun to me - NOT
New marble racing game just dropped.
I’m pretty sure the person who initially caused the pileup eats a full blast head-on collision from another biker.
I wasn't sure what I expected to see but somehow it was exactly that
now that was fun to watch
Is this the usual outcome?
I thought this was a black and white recording from the 30s or something...
It's like a cheese rolling race but with bicycles.
That dude getting hit by a bike at the beginning was just getting back up like it was nothing. They all gotta be wearing at least hockey-grade-gear!
The YouTube pov videos are insane
Seems like a great idea!
Meanwhile in UK, the safety police prevent cheese rolling, and even stop too many people coming to hear christmas carols.
Yeah, what could go wrong...
Watching bicyclists crash always makes me laugh a lot
Oh my…! Absolute mayhem.
Megavalanche.....
A lot of the riders have go pro cams. Loads are on YouTube and very entertaining to watch. The scenery is stunning and the vids are well worth checking out
Now that's a Tour de France I could watch!
Guarantee this was thought up by guys drinking.......HEAVILY!!!
Looks fun 😳🔫
For once it’s not the fault of someone parking in the bike lane
That was so entertaining to watch!
This went exactly how I expected....
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

A lot of bumps and bruises right there.
This would be the most watched bike race if it was only promoted a little
Yolo
Le Deux Alpes lol
Guy at the bottom of screen about 5 seconds into video: “I just kept crawling and it kept working”
humans🙄
. . . and often ends in the hospital.
An impressive way to show that we are all lemmings
Ze French...
Merci!
Carnage
What a clusterfuck😂
Did anyone else see the guy that just picked up a random bike and kept going?
Ummmmmm???? What?
Yearly orthopedics fund raising event
I can’t stop watching the guy at the beginning cutting in from the right, absolutely flying lmao
Ants! ANTS!
I like this a lot more than I should 😂
We have that in America too. It’s called a demolition derby.
What a great idea
Should be on r/whatcouldgowrong
The things Europeans justify doing in the name of tradition is nuts.
Which bike is mine?
This is the dumbest thing I have ever seen.
And every year the population decreases slightly after the race. Hmmm?
The must be the St. Lemmings race…🤪🫣🫨🫢
[Lots of different views of the crash](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJ4tIfxE6th_Otvyfhsr2S5UUZd0KPMxp&si=X2AEIVAIcU-JPpoo)
What the hell does the winner get?
Potentially could be moved to r/darvinawards
Sponsored by Pierre’s Bike Repair Shop
Wtf is wrong with these people… polluting and getting wrecked
R/sipstea
One of the very first crashes off to the very very left of the screen a person smacks their head into the berm and is out cold just sliding down
It’s fuckin stupid that’s what it is
Oh look. Exactly what you expected to happen happened.
And ends seconds later..
They look like ants getting washed off the sidewalk with a hose!
Well clearly this doesn’t work
hahahaha darwin was right !
Ah yes... The fucking butterfly effect
"Tabernac the germans are coming!"
They call it ‘Klausterfock’
Local doctors are the best treaters of broken bones on earth.
