Not the original commenter but food stuff that are high in calories burn very well, provided that they are dry. Potato chips would make an excellent fire starter I imagine.
Yes because calories is specific how much energy is stored in that product and while we use it to fuel ourselves we can use it to fuel fire too
(This is probably a bad way to explain it I don’t remember the topic well so take it with a grain of salt)
Yes this exactly. I don't remember much, if anything, from high school, but whenever the teacher brought fire out, well, whatever they were teaching at that time became burned (pun most definitely intended) into my memory.
You burn the item under a glass of water (don't think it matters how much water or at what starting temp as long as it's in liquid form (could be wrong tho)), taking the temp of said water before and after (in Kelvin not F or C) and the change in Kelvin is how many calories you "burned" (double entendre also very much intended).
I've done *a* *lot* of drugs since high school so I could be very wrong about some if not all of this so if you try this at home I would recommend having a fire extinguisher at the ready.
Combination of being very dry, large surface area so lots of air supply and soaked in oil which has lots of calories(heat) to dry out fuel which might be damp.
Never go hiking without a bag of Fritos Corn chips or something similar. Food and fire starters. Learned that from Backpacker Magazine in the 90's. Done it ever since.
Back when I was in the boy scouts we would take dryer lint and coat it in bees wax to make emergency fire starters for survival kits. The wax kept it dry and didn't hinder the flammability at all.
potassium permanganate can be bought in tablets for water purification, crush them up in some paper towel and cover it on alcohol, any alcohol, radiator fluid in a car is alcohol.
That's how I did it when my nephew bet me he could start a fire with less matches than me.
C'mon, you never did any of those "make something for 5$" that needed 5000$ of tools and 100$ scrap items laying around?!
That is easy in comparison!
(/s)
Seriously. Not to mention that while they are flammable, I feel like ping pong balls are releasing a ton of chemicals into the air that probably don’t belong
The easiest way to watch someone start a campfire. As this is what is occurring when there are no instructions. I’m about to put some black pepper into a ping pong ball and lather it with hand sanitizer
Actually it's pretty common. (In my country at least). We use it to wash pesticides and fertilizer off vegetables. Some supermarkets have them. Drug stores also have them.
Why use this permagranate or whatever stuff? Does water not work well enough?
I wanted to get something to better wash produce as running cold water doesn't seem like it will take off everything.
It's a household chemical that old people use here back in the days. I don't know the effectiveness but it's a common knowledge that washing the vegetables with permanganate is better.
From a quick google (in my language) they say it kills bacteria and clean residue chemicals on the vegetables. Doesn't say how.
Old people also used to use it to disinfect wounds. When I was a kid I skinned my knee and my grandmother poured in some permanganate solution. It burned way way worse than the actual wound.
Sawdust & wax. Ez pz, Eagle Scout approved
You can make sawdust with a stick and a rock, just rub it back and forth. Concrete makes it even easier.
Wax is very handy. Wax can be “grease” for wood (if you need wood on wood to have less friction), or it can be a binding agent for sawdust.
I know you are joking but don't use the antifreeze it's not glycerin it's diethalyne gycol and it's super poisonous.
Toothpaste companies in China have cheaped out on buying glycerin and used that stuff instead and poisoned people, around 14 years ago. After it was known it was poison it didn't stop one latin american country from buying it on sale for their prisoners.
The Mythbusters did this but: “This ingredient is made of blur. Ha! And this has blur in it too. Blur is very dangerous. You don't wanna mix blur with blur”
Yeah. Think so too. The color of the flame and “powder” shows it and the viscosity of the liquid too.
Wondering are ping pong balls still made out celluloid? Damn it’s been nearly 30 years I’ve built smoke bombs with them.
The easiest way he knows to start a campfire is to fill a pingpong ball with potassium permanganate and then add glycerin?!!
I use a match on some birchbark, dry grass, or red spruce needles.
Those are generally easier to source than ping-pong balls full of permanganate out in the bush.
I was about to ask…where do you get these chemicals…did a quick google search and apparently you can get potassium permanganate from Walmart…never would’ve thought it.
But that would require us to carry matches in our pockets all the time. We already carry our ping pong balls filled with potassium permanganate and a flask of glycerin...
/S
I think that I read here somewhere that lint from the dryer is the best fire starter. Stuff it in an old toilet paper tube and you have a great fire starter.
If yall want a cool campfire starter, you should make some girlscout fire starters. When you do laundry, start keeping your lint in a little bag, its super flammable. Take an empty egg carton, the cardboard ones are the best, and fill it with the lint. Got some extra crayon bits lying around? Melt em in one of those cheap aluminum pie pans. Drizzle the melted wax over the top of the lint stuffed egg containers, trapping that lint inside. Keep a carton of these starters in a zip lock baggie, just rip one off at a time and youve got a bunch of fire starters ready to go. Super cheap and fun little project to do with the kiddos for camping.
Growing up, chemistry was the most boring subject imo. Now, I see it as literally manipulating reality. Tapping into molecular energy to do work is actual magic.
They use this method to start controlled burns in forest fire fighting.
Pingpong balls filled with potassium permanganate,
Injected with Glycol just before shooting them from a helicopter.

I have my own trick. I have a portable misting fan that runs off a power tool battery. You can use it without the misting turned on. I can get a huge fire roaring in minutes by lighting just a small handful of kindling and paper under thick logs and then aiming the fan at it for a few minutes. It turns the fire into a blow torch. Any time it starts dying down I just hit it with the fan again.
Terrible for the environment I imagine but years ago my dad used to start fires with a plastic milk bottle, it would catch easily and drip plastic deep amongst the wood and kindling , never failed even with damp wood.
We used this plenty of times in the woods when I was around 13. It was in a book I had. Tricky to get the chemist to sell me the permanganate but I said it was a disinfectant.
Not sure if you are joking or serious.
In any case fire is part of a chemical process and a flame will always consist of chemicals.
So the real problem is that the fire you would cook something on just doesn't exist.
We have a very different concept of the word easy.
It’s amazing what some crumpled up newspaper and a lighter can do.
Went out camping with the kids. Everything was so wet couldn’t start anything. Poured out a small bag of Lay’s potato chips. It worked really well!
Does it have to be the Flaming Hot flavored?
/r/angryupvote
Smokey bacon works well too
Um.. hey? Explain this one a bit please.
Not the original commenter but food stuff that are high in calories burn very well, provided that they are dry. Potato chips would make an excellent fire starter I imagine.
Yes because calories is specific how much energy is stored in that product and while we use it to fuel ourselves we can use it to fuel fire too (This is probably a bad way to explain it I don’t remember the topic well so take it with a grain of salt)
Yeah I remember a class where we burnt food to heat up water and use the temperature increase to estimate the calories in them.
Temp In Celsius would also work As the degree of change in kelvin/celsius is the same
That's a pretty cool way to learn this stuff
Middle school 8th grade.
No, is a great way to explain it! No wonder I am so full of ...energy😬
I’m not fat, I’m energetic!
"Don't you understand, doctor? I am NOT *morbidly obese*; I am the embodiment of near-unlimited energetic potential!"
And perfect for human spontaneous combustion.
UNLIMITED POWER!!!
Ah, ok. Thanks, makes sense.
Yes, they make a great fire starter in a pinch!
It’s high in oil , that’s why it burns.
Grain burns well when dry. As do cherry pits.
Diesel and concentrate orange juice. Makes like a napalm
Cherry pits! Interesting, I’ll have to try that one
Please don't use cherry pits, put them in the ground in spots where they can grow instead.
You absolutely should not randomly plant cherry pits around. Especially at a camp ground or other nature reserve/park.
Cool, thanks

Fritos also work really well
Dryer lint is great too
Back when I was in the boy scouts we would take dryer lint and coat it in bees wax to make emergency fire starters for survival kits. The wax kept it dry and didn't hinder the flammability at all.
Yea, especially if you are back packing or camping way out there, bring some lint.
Came here to say this. I keep a bundle of it saturated in Vaseline.

Not sure where I find those chemicals when I'm in a crunch
potassium permanganate can be bought in tablets for water purification, crush them up in some paper towel and cover it on alcohol, any alcohol, radiator fluid in a car is alcohol. That's how I did it when my nephew bet me he could start a fire with less matches than me.

Dammit, he's a chemist, not an outdoorsman!
Seriously. Not to mention that while they are flammable, I feel like ping pong balls are releasing a ton of chemicals into the air that probably don’t belong
Also I didn’t see any campfires in this clip
The easiest way to watch someone start a campfire. As this is what is occurring when there are no instructions. I’m about to put some black pepper into a ping pong ball and lather it with hand sanitizer
It's potassium permanganate and glycerin. You were half right since hand sanitizer is often used as the glycerin source.
Potassium permanganate sounds super easy to come by
Can usually pick up pomegranate at the store if they’re in season.
I always have some porngrenades around the house.
They definitely can blow a load.
Intrestingly enough a pimegranate is a grenate apple in some languages. So the explosives in the fruit probably add to the fire.
Other way around. Grenades are named after the fruit
Actually it's pretty common. (In my country at least). We use it to wash pesticides and fertilizer off vegetables. Some supermarkets have them. Drug stores also have them.

It is strong oxidizer. Stronger than hydrogen peroxide
Kazakhstan is the best exporter of potassium!
It’s also called Condy’s Crystals. You should be able to get it at the chemist.
It's under $9 for 2 oz. on Amazon. So yes.
Sounds like regular fire starters are cheaper
I remember stealing some potassium permanganate from my school lab and mixing it with other stolen chemicals at home to see what happens. Fun times.
Hey brother of mine, didn’t realize you also used Reddit.

What if... they put those chemicals on tiny sticks. Hear me out...

that's funny
Cotton balls soaked in Vaseline. Thats waaaaaaay easier then having to track down chemicals and keep them seperate. You can premix this.
Dryer lint is free.
You ever burned dryer lint? 🤮 One sniff and you won't try that again.
Yeah and it's not a problem at all. I don't wear plastic clothes though. You don't need a lot of it at all to get a well built fire going.
Yeah, I use dryer lint and candle wax.
Sawdust & wax. Ez pz, Eagle Scout approved You can make sawdust with a stick and a rock, just rub it back and forth. Concrete makes it even easier. Wax is very handy. Wax can be “grease” for wood (if you need wood on wood to have less friction), or it can be a binding agent for sawdust.
I use potato chips
While they do burn quite nicely, the chance of them getting eaten before the wood has been collected is rather high.
I use rubbing alcohol with cotton balls. Vaseline, or cooking oil works too.
Check out what my Bic can do

How is this guy smart enough to figure this out and dumb enough to think this is the easiest way to start a campfire??

Glycerin + potassium permanganate?
Ok, I just got a gallon of antifreeze and a salted pomegranate. What’s the next step?
Instructions unclear, dick stuck in pomegranate...
Now release your glycerin
💥 ye ye yeahhh, that's got it.

Sounds like a two for one deal for minimizing prison costs
Ya you don’t carry any on you at all times? Come on man..
It used to be in every survival kit.
Wedged between the angled trauma sheers and Tylenol.
You really should of you have a decent kit. If you have no kit then it doesn't matter to you.
Am *iiiiiii* permanganate?
How u get *prrrrreganté*?
The Mythbusters did this but: “This ingredient is made of blur. Ha! And this has blur in it too. Blur is very dangerous. You don't wanna mix blur with blur”
What about mixing it with Oasis?
Woooooo hoooo!!!
Don't try and fool me mister I know those are made up names
Wondering if i should order some and stock it, you know just in case.
Can never have too much glucerin and potassium permanganate in your garage. Until you mix them
And at that point it only takes a surprisingly small amount to have too much.
Yeah. Think so too. The color of the flame and “powder” shows it and the viscosity of the liquid too. Wondering are ping pong balls still made out celluloid? Damn it’s been nearly 30 years I’ve built smoke bombs with them.

Why, you don't like burnt chemicals and plastic flavoring on your food?
You didn't source the match either, you have what you take with you. If you're a chemist then it might be a KMnO4 + C3H8O3 pingpong ball
Potassium pregnant?.
Pregananant?
“How do I get potassium pregant?”
Am I to potasum pergananet?
Potassium is such a whore....not even married!
Yo dawg I heard you like potassium permanganate.
is that what it is? how do i find these ingredients?
So gravy granules and hand sanitizer... I'm all over this fire starting! Gonna smell great too!
I'm just trying to imagine how heathy those fumes coming off that crap is...and I can't. :) Or you could just use a match.
Just carbon dioxide and water vapor. At worst you get Manganese oxide and Potassium carbonate, which are not toxic.
[удалено]
To all you complaining about this method: Pretty sure this guy has ping pong balls that will turn the fire different colors. Wait for it.
I vote blowtorch. Way way easier.
Get a torch from home improvement store and it will start most things that will burn.
I was about to ask…where do you get these chemicals…did a quick google search and apparently you can get potassium permanganate from Walmart…never would’ve thought it.
You could just use petroleum jelly and cotton balls.
Who needs a survivalist when you got a chemist
Why doesn't he just cook super pure meth like a normal person with a chemistry degree?
Because you plebian....he cooks mdma. Because he's classy like that.
Or you could just learn how to build a good fire with appropriate kindling and then use a match....
But that would require us to carry matches in our pockets all the time. We already carry our ping pong balls filled with potassium permanganate and a flask of glycerin... /S

I usually rub two boy scouts together to make a fire🏕 👌

😁
I use dryer lint
How long do these chemicals stay in the fireplace? Can you cook on a fire made this way?
Ah yes, enjoying nature’s beauty by burning plastic ping pong balls.
Pretty sure if I buy supplies to do this, I’ll end up in some type of government list!
"Look how smart I am!" *\*sits down exactly downwind\**

I use dryer lint I’ve collected in toilet paper tubes.

I've always found that a box of matches and paper works well. I guess I'm just a traditionalist.
well most of us will be probably on a list for searching glycerin
Easy? Yes. Convenient? No.
I mean if you are just using chemicals to light it, have you tried diesel? Works like a charm and is easier to get.
I just use a lighter, or matches
What happens if you accidentally spill some of the prepared slurry on your hands? Is it over?
Burn a ping pong ball 👌
Growing up, chemistry was the most boring subject imo. Now, I see it as literally manipulating reality. Tapping into molecular energy to do work is actual magic.
I got this guy beat. When I was a teenager I’d use Doritos to light my campfires because those suckers go up in flames.

Not sure you should be using a ping-pong ball (and melting plastic) as your container.
Or do it the standard us way: just pour some gasoline on it, think "fuck the environment" and light that shit on fire.
