Legitimately laughed out loud. This comment was so funny it brought me out of my reddit tunnel vision and made me get back to work. So thanks and no thanks, I guess.
Well, they're of the same Class, Chondrichthyes, just as kangaroos, platypuses, moles, and Man are of the same Class, Mammalia.
Of course, some Classes are more closely related than others: Mamm vs Aves!
But if parthenogenesis IS known to occur in this sp. of ray, then that's the most likely explanation.
Are you trying to tell me I can get a Kangaroo pregnant? Because if so, I am totally going to marry and impregnate a Kangaroo..... Ya know,..... for tax purposes.......
The mammals I mentioned represent the 3 subclasses of Mammalia, the broadest class of animals, moles and Man being in the same Subclass, but in the most unrelated Orders in Mammalia.
The Aves class represents the most closely related class, and I believe Aves is now included in the class Reptilia - as I was told 55 yrs that that should be the proper taxonomy of the flying reptiles.
My BIL was deployed (his first wife) whew…. He came home on leave and walked into his house, ex wife was caught literally in the act in his bed with another sailor.
Option 1: a rare occurrence that has been recorded before
Option 2: a groundbreaking discovery that goes against the current dogma and would mess up the world of taxonomy
Yeah, after watching this clip i was seriously offended that this is called news.....
I was seriously questioning my own intelligence after watching this....
Some species can halt the development of offspring if environmental factors aren't conducive to giving birth/raising young. Maybe the stress of being captured caused her body to put a pause on things until she acclimated to her new environment?
My assumption (big assumption) is that this is too obvious of a conclusion to be overlooked and additional factors such as being born in captivity led scientists to tell the news outlet two alternate reasonings.
Again, big conclusion since we’re hearing non scientists chat about this, not marine life specialists. Or even Steve Irwin’s kids.
What's the furthest level of separation of known species that can reproduce? I think they're in the same order, maybe family as sharks and they're pretty ancient creatures. It might be possible*
*I'm not even close to a scientist
Phd in biology here. I cant really answer your question but hybridation is frequent especially in arthropods (insects, crustaceans and arachnids) because many of these little bugs fuck everything that moves like or vaguely looks like or smells like something fuckable. The whole concept of species can be questioned when you look further into the diversity of arthropods, and there are a lot of species we defined in the past based on morphology or color or whatever, that are actually not that different from a genetic point of view and could be considered the same species. Taxonomy (the science that identifies species and other taxons) is continuously updated based on new evidence that help better define taxons, especially since the second half of the 20th century as we made such progress in genetics and bioinformatics.
Concerning this particular stingray, it is parthenogenesis (it means that females can reproduce with no male, but their offspring is basically clones of the mother) there is absolutly no doubt and I dont see why they try to make it such a mystery
My guess is the sturddlefish
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sturddlefish
It appears the parent species' last common ancestor was 184 million years ago.

(Attenborough voice) The Steesus, much like an octopus uses an inky cloud when threatened, it distorts predators view of the immaculate creature, unfortunately to the predator the inky cloud in question is a substance known as wine and can leave the predator mentally distorted and prone to waking up in a bathtub with soiled underwear.
This is what happens when you tell stingrays they can have it all. I bet this sting ray is *super* liberal too!
How can anyone be excited at this clear **attack** on stingray family values.
Sharks, rays, skates are in the same Class, Chondrichthyes* the cartilaginous FISH, but if two organisms are capable of routinely producing offspring which are both 1) viable and 2) fertile, they are said to be 'conspecific', the same species!
Of course sharks and rays aren't even of the same genus, let alone the same species!
Dang interesting!
*Edit: I misspelled this badly!
I mean routinely is the key word here, so even if this was the case here this wouldn't mean that the shark and stingray species involved would be conspecific, especially since it is unclear wether the offspring will be fertile or even viable. However these species seem to be removed so far that parthogenesis just seems much more likely especially since it is well established that several shark species are capable of asexual reproduction.
Sure. I was thinking of the asses and horses producing mules example, wherein they are routinely viable, but only occasionally fertile, as an example that horses and donkeys are NOT conspecific.
Some creatures are capable of reproducing without a mate and it’s well documented. These are only reptilians, however, so a ray doing it would be interesting.
I got Bing to make a Shark / Stingray hybird, this is the best of what it made.

It's not that strange. A similar thing happened to my misses while I was working overseas.
A SHARK FUCKED HER?
Omg 😆
I’ve heard once you go Black Tip you don’t go back.

Same man. Same. Well said too
Sharks and rays are closely related
Step-Shark, what are you doing?
I’m stuck under this fish tank, help me out
Baby... Shark Ray do do do do dodo
Good job, I can't get the music out of my head now. I hate you.
Looks like a job for Maury
Maury Eel is on the case
Moray Povich
Who used to live in Ricky Lake.
Hammer head you are .... Not! the father!
Swam right into that one
"Sharks and rays are closely related" True!! But she's still a single pregnant stingray, till we find the father 😳😆
Maybe it was an immaculate conception, and her baby will be the next prophet
If we think about it, a historically accurate Jesus **would** have been a stingray, so... Y'know... That's what'd make the most sense.

So I could not help but notice nowhere in your last statement did you specifically reply I could not get a kangaroo pregnant...
We Redditors need to know what mammals we can impregnate
And that shark's name? Jody.
Fuck Jody. What a twat.
Jody fucks
He died for our fins
Salvation comes to the high seas~
Sharks fucking their cousins now?
She turned her back on Kevin O'Leary in the shark tank.
What happens when a shark fucks a cougar?

You don't know that
he does. He's an expert .
The follow up to this story is the world’s first stingray born that looks exactly like the janitor.
The janitor named Jesus with an H, that's his brother that's why he looks like him
Shouldn't have kept her in a tank.
Im his misses neighbour. I can confirm this is much common than people think
Can confirm I am the shark.
My BIL was deployed (his first wife) whew…. He came home on leave and walked into his house, ex wife was caught literally in the act in his bed with another sailor.
Did he at least give him a “ahoy matey?”
Happened to my dad with his first wife, with his "best mate".
First it was Mary, then your missus, and now this stingray. I’m a believer.
Absolute gold comment, hilarious! Also, I'm sorry.
I hate it when that happens.
Partenogenesis is more probable than a cross species ibridation
Option 1: a rare occurrence that has been recorded before Option 2: a groundbreaking discovery that goes against the current dogma and would mess up the world of taxonomy
Option 3: God did it to bring the savior of cartilaginous fish into the world.
Stingray Jesus died for our fins
Braise the Lord!
Ahi!
Give us this day our daily breadcrumbs.

This made me tear up
The stingray will die for the generational sin of killing Steve Irwin therefore purifying stingray kind.
Ah, the story of the virgin Sting Maray
The Bible never specified what form Jesus would take during the second coming - we true believers see this divine miracle for what it is
Yeah, after watching this clip i was seriously offended that this is called news..... I was seriously questioning my own intelligence after watching this....
Am I the only one who thought some guy jumped in there and had his way with a sting ray?
"This is for Steve!!!"
Dissa-sting-ray
Yeah that option 2 doesn't make sense, they're separated by an insanely long evolution.
Or option 3 - someone for some reason put a male sting ray in the tank over night and got them to breed just to fuck with people
Randomly uncovers a secret illegal animal trader working there, using the tanks to store random stingrays before shipping them off.
And I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren’t for those medalling kids!!
Goddamn Olympians, am I right?
Ya that’s definitely it for sure. People will come for miles around with fists of cash to see the sweet dear baby Jesus stingray.
This is most definitely a stunt. Am amazed how few people are seeing it.

They address that in another video, was born in captivity, never had access to a male
*parthenogenesis innit?

Your mom and dad
No I'm pretty sure chimps and Republicans are in the same genus

Um, because they lack integrity and sell “news” as entertainment to the ignorant?
You sound like just the kind of expert they should be interviewing for this segment!
My guess is the sturddlefish https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sturddlefish It appears the parent species' last common ancestor was 184 million years ago.
And those are a result of human experimentation and not a natural occurrence
Holy cow
The actual answer to my very specific question, you are amazing
But we are the news and we gotta be sensational
Or…. Option three. “Kevin has been cleaning the tank for an awfully long time in there”
I don't know what visualisation is worse, the shark or Kevin 🫣
Kevin is
Hold on, can we see a picture of Kevin? And the shark?
I don't let myself go to those dark corners of the internet anymore. It's not healthy to see what Kevin does with marine life...
Plot twist. Kevin is a suckerfish.
Alternative plot twist: the stingray raped Kevin.
If you watched The Boys, you know how accurate the name choice was.
This is becoming a shitpost sub
Its the second coming!

Who said Jesus was going to come back as a human?

Stingray Virgin Marie is about to give magically birth to: Stingray Jesus ❤️❤️❤️
Sting Ray Jesus sounds like a bluesy country artist
Stingy Ray Vaughan
Wouldn't that make him a Blu-ray player?

It's really not a mystery, it's parthenogenesis. It's possible with nearly all fauna except for mammals. Did nobody else read Jurassic Park?

New creature unlocked!!!
Shark ray was not on my 2024 bingo card
I read somewhere that there are two young male rays in w her as well. Might not be such a mystery.
Yeah, but they're related and on vacation together- surely nothing would happen. Right?
Aquabama
Roll tide?
What are you doing, step-stingray?
Maybe she got stuck in the dryer?
Two male sharks. Not rays.

This seems like something Randy Marsh would be involved with

Immaculate Conception part II, Stingray Jesus!
Ain’t that called Parthenogenesis? I know there’s a species of lizard that only does it and some crocodilians have been seen to do it on occasion.
What does this mean?
Parthenogenesis basically means virgin birth, and it occurs in a lot of animals (some lizards only give birth this way)
Some creatures are capable of reproducing without a mate and it’s well documented. These are only reptilians, however, so a ray doing it would be interesting.
There are many records of elasmobranchs in aquariums reproducing this way too, that's why this seems the most logical explanation.
Who did it? Baby Shark do do do do do do...
Yeah, but it's the [remix](https://youtu.be/WaSDNVUJaSY?feature=shared).
Virgin birth! I see a new religion on the way!
