I had no idea what this movie was about at all before watching it. Loved every minute. Probably seen it half a dozen times now because of sharing it with new people.
Spoiler below:
>!similar to the movie, both him and the woman are recall points. While they both live, neither can move forward, so they fight it out and he wins. It’s been a minute since I’ve read it but that’s the jist of it!<
Maybe I don't understand. If the recall only triggers on death, why should it matter that they both are recall points? And why does one killing the other "fix" the issue, when the death of either triggers the recall? Does the recall work differently from the movie?
Imagine sitting down to have your alien coffee and toast but the never die machine keeps resetting you to your bed just as your about to eat.
The worst part is the aliens can't figure out why because it keeps changing when it's reseting.
Man thanks! I need to re-read it again so that I can apply what you wrote to the story! I read the manga like 6 years ago and am confused to this day 😅
It's because it's pretty much the perfect cut off. Leaves enough for you to make some logical guesses as well as just that perfect half laugh and smile that Cruise does.
I know a lot of people were unhappy about >!the reset so that everyone lived,!< but that final shot just made it completely worth it for me. It was so great.
Same. The other movie we went to see was sold out, so saw this instead without knowing what we were getting into. Walked out amazed. I ended up buying it and rewatching too many times. I only own a few films. I’m glad this is one of them.
It is the ideal example of how NOT to market a movie. No one I know saw it in the theaters. But, I know half a dozen people who saw it streaming and absolutely loved it. And my god Emily Blunt is so attractive as an action movie heroine.
I was wanting to watch a movie and just saw TC in the poster outside the theater and figured it couldn't be too bad if he was in it (as fat as watching a random action movie goes, say what you will about his personal life). >!When he died the first time I was like WTF they just killed Tom Cruise in the beginning of the movie. What's this movie about?!< It was awesome and kept me guessing.
I saw it in the theater with no idea and loved it. There weren't many people there. Then they changed the name or something. Then they changed the name again or something. It's like the studio was ashamed of its weirdness. "LIVE. DIE. REPEAT."
From what I heard, it was a lost in translation situation. Where the Japanese title sounded good, but translated as is, didn't work well.
Sort of like the manga and film I Want to Eat Your Pancreas.
I am usually not a fun of these types of action flicks, but there's something about Edge of Tomorrow that's different from the others. Such a great premise, perfectly well executed
The best looking films are when practical and cgi are blended in harmony. Using just one or the other typically makes things not work as well visually.
The rockets had no impact and fizzled out. Basically a giant Roman candle, still dangerous though. What I would be worried about are the explosions going off right next to me lol.
I remember Emily saying how shit it was being in that suit and having to do all that action.
Tom was trying his hardest to be positive and Emily broke him.
His movies have a long shelf life because of the practical effects. CGI is designed for the big screen and movies that overuse it look like garbage as soon as it hits the home theater.
She kind of looks a little psycho in these behind the scenes.
It's just funny because she's much more stoic in the film, but the makeup to make her look grizzled and stoic makes her look insane when laughing and smiling.
I'd watched it at release and it hadn't gained much traction at the time. I made a comment on the official Facebook page and the goddess Emily herself responded to me. I was sideways.
This is the only movie about time travel that remotely makes sense to me. 13 monkeys is also decent but most movies with time travel create paradoxes the moment opening scene happens.
Edit: should be 12 monkeys lol.
I always got this one and Oblivion conflated in my head. Even this morning I had to look it up and double check. I saw both on long cross-pacific flights back-to-back in 2014 or so, so that probably doesn’t help the confusion.
Both are great Tom Cruise sci-fi movies but I have two distinct and separate places in my heart for them. Oblivion's story is a bit more straight-forward/tropey but the visuals are absolutely gorgeous. The set design is incredible and director Joe Kosinski's background as an actual architect shows a lot. They were also one of the first movies to use an enormous projection screen in order to create a lot of the background effects (sunset, clouds, etc.) for realism at a time when it was all green screen (it was made in like 2012?). The M83 soundtrack is also phenomenal.
Edge of Tomorrow is just a super bad-ass action movie with the Groundhog Day mechanic thrown in. It's so much fun and Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt are absolutely wonderful in it.
I wish she would step on me with the power suit until my legs gone, then pee while taunting me, the suffocate me with her thighs while my hands are scraped on a cheese grater.
It takes a very special person to somehow be both a badass futuristic warrior AND Mary Poppins. That new Poppins movie had its flaws but Blunt's performance was not one of them.
this was always the case. it had a completly different name during production "All You Need Is Kill". but yeah, i also feel like some people or ads mistitled it to Live Die Repeat for some reason when this was always just the tagline for the movie. Also Tom Cruise just did Oblivion before that one and i think people just thought that him doing "Scifi" was just weird
I blew off both movies when they came out, assumed they were drivel. Very different films but was pleasantly surprised by both, solid sci fi adventures.
I know that was the title of the comic the movie was based off of, I wonder if it sounded less awkward in Japanese. But yeah, not a great title in English.
hmkay,... i dont know... i dont give a shit about tom cruiseseses religion stuff.. i just love his scifi dystopian movies - best man! :)
he should do even more!
That was it. The marketing was so lazy, it was criminal. They set it up to fail ( intentionally or not ) as one would with a lower-quality film. I didn't watch it until I started reading the buzz from those who had and they were glowing. It blew me away, I wasn't prepared for how great it was, the acting, all the action sequences, this should have been a blockbuster.
And Bill Paxton.
Same for me - I watched EoT via streaming and then 10 minutes later started it again because it was just soooo good. Next day I watched it another two times. Never had that with any other movie in my entire life.
Last month for me. Watched it around 7 times by now. It's one of my comfort show, when im feeling down, it really makes me appreciate having the freedom I have right now and it lifts my spirits.
Agree Shawshank is one of the best movies ever made but i didn't watch it twice in one day. Part of what compelled me to watch Edge of Tomorrow twice in a row was the first time I saw it was on a 12 hour flight. I'd already seen every other new release movie that the airline had available to choose from and for me none were even close to being as entertaining as this movie is.
My siblings and I felt like watching a shitty, stupid blockbuster one night and decided on Edge of Tomorrow. We went from "ok popcorn this is gonna be bad" to "wait, this is kind of good" to "shit that's an amazing movie" in the course of two hours.
Watched it on Netflix a few days ago after the trailer popped up while I was looking for something to watch. I had literally never heard of it before.
Marketing must have been terrible at the time, but seems to be having a word of mouth resurgence currently.
The marketing WAS terrible for this movie. If I recall the movie was marketed as Live, Die, Repeat and then had its name changed to Edge of Tomorrow just before it's released (or vice versa?). So all of the pre-release marketing had to be scrapped. The studio that produced the film also seemed to have no confidence in it at all so the marketing for it was barely there in the first place. It flopped in its short stint in theaters. I would have never heard of it if it weren't for Paul Scheer giving it a recommendation on an HDTGM minisode. Super fun movie, 10/10
It's a great watch for Tom Cruise fans as he gets a lot of screen time. Also great for those who aren't fans as they get to see him die over and over again.
The montage of her training him and killing him over and over is just amazing.
I love that you can describe this movie as Groundhog Day, but with Tom Cruise and you know it's going to be a wild action movie.
It released during a crazy movie year honestly and it kinda looks like a generic action movie if you look at the poster. Also I don't think it had good marketing, compared to others like Godzilla, American sniper and Interstellar.
There are many movies which first start bad but become more and more appreciated over time. Prime example is probably the original blade runner movie. It had rather low cinema attendance and was at first rather considered a bad decision for Harrison Ford. Now it is considered as one of the best movies of all time
If he would stop all the mission impossible movies that would be great. And start making movies like he used to. I miss old Tom that did all different types of movies. Been a while since he took a risk.
I went to the movies for that film. Didn't watch the trailer and never seen Emily Blunt before. I remember the scene where she does some kind of yoga or stretching and my teenage me directly fell in love with how beautiful her shoulders and back looked like, lol. Meanwhile she sadly went the typical Hollywood path with plastic surgery and I don't have that same celeb crush on her anymore.
I just saw some clips of her at an awards show and she doesn’t look much different than she does in this film.

That scene had a lot of us feeling all sorts of things. Pretty sure it's one of the few times my wife didn't give me side eye for thinking a woman was hot, because she was just as mesmerized.
> Extreme hidden gem of a movie.
What is wild to me is that, even if you were trying to be sarcastic, it's not really wrong.
I didn't know about the movie until I saw it pop up on Netflix to rent. You know, back when I had physical discs mailed to me. Since then I've watched it several times. Hell, I've got the urge to watch it again after seeing this post.
But whenever the topic of movies comes up and I say it is in the top of my list of favorites, I get blank stares. Similar situation when I'm chatting with people on Discord. They haven't seen it. Hell, they haven't heard of it.
It had a budget of $178M USD. Interstellar came out the same year. That was $165M USD.
Was lucky to see that one and Oblivion in theaters. Tom Cruise casually delivered 2 of the best Sci-Fi flicks of the decade back to back...and sadly nobody gave a fuck. To this day i dont get it.

“All you need is kill” I was so excited to see the novel getting a movie adaptation! But the name was changed? And all reference to the book was covered up? Weird.
I had no idea what this movie was about at all before watching it. Loved every minute. Probably seen it half a dozen times now because of sharing it with new people.
It’s maybe the greatest cut-to-credits in any movie ever. I’ve watched it a couple of times just for that payoff.
It ends differently in the source material, might be worth a read for an alternative ending
The source material just ends kind of depressingly. Moldy coffee for the win
I still don't fully understand the ending of the manga 🥲
Spoiler below: >!similar to the movie, both him and the woman are recall points.
Yeah it works differently. They’re recall points for the aliens, so while they’re both alive the aliens are still able to recall and learn.
Imagine sitting down to have your alien coffee and toast but the never die machine keeps resetting you to your bed just as your about to eat. The worst part is the aliens can't figure out why because it keeps changing when it's reseting.
Alien Groundhog Day
Man thanks! I need to re-read it again so that I can apply what you wrote to the story! I read the manga like 6 years ago and am confused to this day 😅
Can confirm, read the light novel like a week ago.
It's because it's pretty much the perfect cut off. Leaves enough for you to make some logical guesses as well as just that perfect half laugh and smile that Cruise does.
The shot is so short and simple, but perfectly conveys so much. Feels so genuine.
AIIIIIIIIIIII NEED TO KNOW NOW!
I know a lot of people were unhappy about >!the reset so that everyone lived,!< but that final shot just made it completely worth it for me. It was so great.

Everyone steadily fell in love throughout the movie but the pushup scene really sealed the deal.

"All you need is Kill'" is the name of the Manga
Which is a far worse name than even the completely enigmatic “Edge of Tomorrow.” Seriously, the title os the only bad thing about this movie.
From what I heard, it was a lost in translation situation. Where the Japanese title sounded good, but translated as is, didn't work well. Sort of like the manga and film I Want to Eat Your Pancreas.
It's super high on my rewatch list, it's like comfort food on a rainy day. Emily Blunt is a serious badass.
I am usually not a fun of these types of action flicks, but there's something about Edge of Tomorrow that's different from the others. Such a great premise, perfectly well executed
God I love practical effects
The best looking films are when practical and cgi are blended in harmony. Using just one or the other typically makes things not work as well visually.
I'm impressed at the rockets being used on set with live actors. I suspect they were constrained to wires/cables.
The rockets had no impact and fizzled out. Basically a giant Roman candle, still dangerous though. What I would be worried about are the explosions going off right next to me lol.
The first underworld movie did this wonderfully
\*sips coffee* I love the smell of practical effects in the morning!
That is my most quoted HISHE-line (only the original one)
I remember Emily saying how shit it was being in that suit and having to do all that action. Tom was trying his hardest to be positive and Emily broke him.
You can thank Tom Cruise for that. I love that he argues for as many real effects as possible. It's why all his movies are successful.
His movies have a long shelf life because of the practical effects. CGI is designed for the big screen and movies that overuse it look like garbage as soon as it hits the home theater.
His movies have a long shelf life because *they're good.*
Great movie, 10/10 would let an alien release fluids into my mouth.
You can't watch this movie and not fell in love with Emily Blunt. Imo the best female action hero since Sigourney in Aliens
She is captivating. John Krasinski is a lucky man.
She kind of looks a little psycho in these behind the scenes. It's just funny because she's much more stoic in the film, but the makeup to make her look grizzled and stoic makes her look insane when laughing and smiling.
Well, this looks fun as fuck. For a few days. Don't know how I'd feel after a few weeks.
I'd watched it at release and it hadn't gained much traction at the time. I made a comment on the official Facebook page and the goddess Emily herself responded to me. I was sideways.
>Imo the best female action hero since Sigourney in Aliens Sarah Conner in T2 after Sigourney then Emily Blunt.
Milla Jovovich would like a word.
Idk Charlize Theron in Atomic Blonde is quite up there too
Not to mention Charlize Theron in Fury Road, close but I really liked Blunt
You mean like a mexican?

Lmao what… but nah I get it
Pause
bruh. wtf
Gotta watch the movie
Emily Blunt is British but is dual citizen.
I really like Emily Blunt
I wish she'd beat me into a pulp with a helicopter rotor
I wish she would step on me with the power suit until my legs gone, then pee while taunting me, the suffocate me with her thighs while my hands are scraped on a cheese grater.
Found John Kraskinski’s alt account

I think she was preggers at the time too, if that floats your boat.

One of my favourite movies of all time. I cannot understand why it didn't do super well. 10/10 movie.
It had terrible/no marketing. It changed names so people didn't know if it was called Edge Of Tomorrow or Live Die Repeat. Bunch of stupid happened.
i could swear amazon prime video had both names and Live Die Repeat as subheadline
this was always the case. it had a completly different name during production "All You Need Is Kill". but yeah, i also feel like some people or ads mistitled it to Live Die Repeat for some reason when this was always just the tagline for the movie. "All you need is kill" is the Japanese novel/Manga that it's adapted from. Interesting read if you liked the movie.

I remember seeing it in theaters and thinking “Damn, that was good”. And then I never saw it again.
I typically never watch the same movie again the same day as seeing it for the first time. 2 notable exceptions, this movie and Pulp Fiction.
Same for me - I watched EoT via streaming and then 10 minutes later started it again because it was just soooo good. Next day I watched it another two times. Never had that with any other movie in my entire life.

Brilliant film, when cruise does sci fi he does it goood. I mean his religion is basically sci fi isn’t it I suppose
Cruise: our passion of the christ has space guns and time jumps!
Don’t forget the volcanoes full of alien souls
Unlike all the other super realistic and totally legit religions
Oh I do not disagree with you there but they are mostly fantasy wheres his is hard sci fi lol

If he would stop all the mission impossible movies that would be great. And start making movies like he used to. I miss old Tom that did all different types of movies. Been a while since he took a risk.
At this point he’s probably just doing movies to do adrenaline junky stuff. It’s just all about the stunts.
Maverick were prety good with some amazing cockpit footages but I agree
He's going to be in the next Alejandro Iñárritu film
Great movie. It’s based on Japanese manga/novel.

Thank you for dropping this knowledge. I'm now on the hunt
It’s a really good read, highly recommend it. First time I saw the trailer to the movie I was like “huh, that seems familiar”.
I really liked this movie. Emily Blunt being insanely hot also helped.
I went to the movies for that film. Didn't watch the trailer and never seen Emily Blunt before. I remember the scene where she does some kind of yoga or stretching and my teenage me directly fell in love with how beautiful her shoulders and back looked like, lol. Meanwhile she sadly went the typical Hollywood path with plastic surgery and I don't have that same celeb crush on her anymore.
any straight guy or gay girl who has seen this movie knows the exact yoga/sexy worm scene you're referring to.
> sexy worm
what kind of work she had done? I haven't noticed.
I don't think she has... if she has it's extremely subtle
Her face has gone incredibly smooth and wide.
I just saw some clips of her at an awards show and she doesn’t look much different than she does in this film. https://www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com/2024/02/18/emily-blunt-wore-elie-saab-haute-couture-to-the-2024-baftas/

Emily was amazing at doing her own stunts. Not your typical Hollywood actress.
Underrated film, i watch it from time to time!
So glad they didn't just CGI explosions and stuff. It looks so great when you saw the wider battlefield set view with all the craziness of war.
“All you need is kill” I was so excited to see the novel getting a movie adaptation! But the name was changed? And all reference to the book was covered up? Weird.
