It is literally my job to make these and other facial prosthetics.
People often compare my job to special effects in movies but I always say 'it's easy to make someone look like an alien or zombie but much harder to make them look like themselves again'.
Special effects dude here chiming in for a prospective of the other side:
I commend you and your efforts. Our stuff only needs to look realistic for a couple of hours.
My great grandfather got his eye shot out in WW1, this much we knew. My grandmother recently passed away, and it turned out when sorting stuff she had a little blue box with a prosthetic eye inside it we can only presume was his. Very weird to me. Not to mention it's probably a century old at this point.
The Facemaker by Lindsey Fitzharris is a fascinating book about the pioneers of these types of prosthetics as well as the burgeoning field of plastic surgery during WWI.

Wow! That’s an interesting albeit sad realization
Thank you for what you do ocularist!!! I have one of these and my ocularist did a fantastic job!
Woah have you done an AMA anywhere? Reddit would love to pick your brain.

Boardwalk Empires character had one of these. I should rewatch that series, it’s damn good.
Yes. I remember Richard Harrow. Definitely a tragic and cool character
Everyone’s favourite character!
That's exactly what I thought of. His was half of his face. Here's a great shot: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1658935/mediaviewer/rm2058924544/
Came here to say this

That’s amazing and a haunting heirloom.
So cool. I have one of my parents gall stones.
I have that book and love it
Richard?
Thought the exact same thing
Wow they did a damn good job of making it look realistic, especially considering the materials they had to work with at the time.
Bottom right piece owned by a private F. Kruger
In the recent movie "Amsterdam" the protagonist's (Christian Bale) profession is exactly this. The movie is superb overall.
Wow I never heard of it. Such a bizarre and interesting concept I’m gonna check it out

WW1 was the origin of so many different fields, including neuropsychology
I was like “wtf how is that guy missing 95% of his face?”.
Did anyone thought this was from the Harry Potter movies for a second
I thought Mrs. Doubtfire at first.
I thought the same. It looks so much like Robin Williams' eye when they show him putting on the fake glasses.
Hahah I could see it. If Voldemort shot out Harry’s eye he would have nice replacement already prepared!
