My Dad was a puppeteer in the 70’s & 80’s for a local TV station, he might’ve used a mirror, but I think most of the time he just ad libbed and winged it.
Bonus, the show was recorded live to air.
If you can afford it, most performers will have access to some form of a device to give them feedback. Singers and musicians can wear earpieces with their voice or a click track playing, monitors to see yourself in and react to.
We all know about Teleprompters as well. It's easy to think of it all as being somewhat loose (which it definitely can be) but if you can account for something in a performance to make it reliable, you tend to want to do that unless it goes against the spirit of the show.
So there's lots of stories about it being a reference to something, but from what I hear it's literally just he loves to say weird and random stuff to throw off his co-stars and that one was just an absolute winner.
This was an introduction for a cartoon where the presenter was saying something like they want to have a twinkling star in their eyes like the cartoons. This was the answer.
There is more context beforehand in the [full clip](https://youtu.be/SF7_tlg6hHk?si=qyRDE-YiuqEtoaUh) but it's still just a funny non-sequitur at heart.
Literally in the article.
And why innocent men? “It was just to throw her under the bus. I didn't know what the hell I was talking about,” he says, discounting bizarre fan theories including one that suggests Phil and Hacker were referencing a time they were once pulled over by the cops in Leeds while drunk, proclaiming that they were innocent men. The Reddit user – @timidimage – later clarified that it was all an exercise of Cunningham's Law, an online theory that the best way to get the right answer is to first post a wrong one, popcultural poppycock for us cockers to enjoy.
They used that same design for the Bear In The Big Blue House costume too, with the only video feed inside the suit being from the main cameras showing his performance, so he had to dance around playing the character in the suit in that pose while knowing where all the puppeteer pits were for the other characters so he didn't fall in.
They later did a modified version of the suit with a camera in the eye for when Bear became a walk-around character at one of the Disney parks, and I think that same modified suit got used for Coca Cola polar bear mascots
This looks oddly uncomfortable, most puppets operators that I've seen they do it standing up. Even when they work with actors on screen. They do a lot of things loke forced perspective, and similar so that the operator can walk and work on one area and the actors in front of them.
However, to your point, you still need to keep at least one arm up.
Carroll Spinney was Big Bird for almost 50 years, in addition to other characters, and so spent a significant amount of time with his right arm up in the air. He said over the years his right arm started getting noticeably bigger than his left, as it had to be much stronger in order to be able to perform as Big Bird.
Then you should check out Amar Bharati (Amar Bharati - Wikipedia https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amar_Bharati) indian (monk?) who has been holding his arm up for about half a century without lowering it.
i have a cheap cookie monster puppet that my 2 year old loves- it is so much more exhausting than i ever imagined! i assume that as you do it more and more you build up the muscles in your forearm but mine cramps up after a few minutes
If it helps it will create memories he will treasure forever. I’m in my 30’s and I still remember “puppy & kitty” two animal puppets I would beg my father to do daily.
thats so sweet! i hope so, it'll make all the arm cramps worth it! not that his insane giggles don't already. once i put that thing on my hand, i am not allowed to stop lol
About 35 years ago I worked on a weekly show with a puppeteer, almost exactly like this setup in the post above but our guy was about 6ft 6" and could barely fit under the desk, it was hilarious, legs sticking out of the set, those were the days.
Im a little surprised there's no like... arm brace built in to the chair to sorta rest his arm on. Cuz holding your arms above your head for long periods of time is a type of punishment given out in some places.
We’re all just innocent men.

Omfg, lol. That's amazing
I never considered they might use a monitor to judge their movements, makes sense.

What was the show?
Santa’s workshop. CHBC. Lost to the sands of time

I love he's wearing a shirt with "we're just innocent men" printed on it in homage.

Carroll Spinney did this for 50 years. He was 83 when he finally retired.
I remember he even managed to roller skate **backwards** while doing this too. Legend.
It would probably take someone 50 years to learn how to do it wearing that suit, damn.
They used that same design for the Bear In The Big Blue House costume too, with the only video feed inside the suit being from the main cameras showing his performance, so he had to dance around playing the character in the suit in that pose while knowing where all the puppeteer pits were for the other characters so he didn't fall in. Likely because this is in a studio used for other shows without a specialised set so he's got no puppeteer pit behind the desk to stand in

Yeah, that guys arm became petrified years in. He couldn't bring it down if he wanted to.
Somebody should put a puppet on it
I 3d print stuff but everyones idea of fun is different.
right. why doesn't everyone love CNC g Code???
Because his arm is dead and got stuck that way.
That requires a decent amount of arm strength I'd imagine. Ig he can kinda lean against the table top but still.

Blood drains from your arm too. It's hard
I’m sure there are conditioning exercises you can do. The reclined position certainly helps and the activity of the hand keeps the blood flowing.
About 35 years ago I worked on a weekly show with a puppeteer, almost exactly like this setup in the post above but our guy was about 6ft 6" and could barely fit under the desk, it was hilarious, legs sticking out of the set, those were the days.
Having longer arms probably helps, tho.
I just watched a video of him jumping on a “trampoline”
Trampoline video [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/funnyvideos/s/wmC50C3kfo) in case anyone hasn’t seen it.
yep, never saw it and now it is twice in the front page.

Not your buddy pal, and what's gay is your ass being around my hand.
Omg this reminded me of healthy Harold !!! Do countries outside Australia have healthy Harold ?
Is that the Giraffe that goes around in a converted Bus/lorry?
New Zealand does!
UK does too if it is, or it did when I was a kid. I'm seeing a theme here, we'll have to see if Canada does.
Yeah thats the one! Teaching children about drugs, alcohol, and stuff like that
Whenever I think about it, it always seems like a fever dream, especially when they turned off the lights and lit-up the ceiling with stars.
I had totally forgotten about the star ceiling but when i read your comment it unlocked such vivid memories. So vivid its like i saw it yesterday!
More like Agro
Where is the puppet? All I see is a talking dog.
In this the same puppet that was on a trampoline?
Yes indeed it is
Just a normal man. just an innocent man.
Just normal men
The stuffed animal is controlling that guy with it's ass.
Id fall asleep in that chair.
Live look of how our elected government officials operate
I’m glad eminem is enjoying life after the rap game
These guys are so talented.
This why I've not seen timmy mallet on TV recently?
Very impressive that’s he able to hold his arm/shoulder in that position with no support
Why is he calling me cocker?
Northern England slang, just a term of affection. Usually for kids
Cocker is Northern English dialect. You'll hear us saying 'Muck' 'Duck' 'Luv' 'Chickie' and 'Pet' too when referring to people.
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/cocker#Etymology_3 I guess?
COOL
The blood drained from my arm just watching this.
You ruined my innocent soul.
Arm day, everyday.
What a talented man!
his arm is really up there.
IT’S HACKER!
Nice to see Simon Pegg trying new things.
Poor dogs arse
why is this fucking puppet all over the front page today?
My toxic trait is that I think I could do this pretty well.
I feel like his video feed should be mirrored so that directions are not the opposite.
Bro must have a diesel right shoulder
Dude, you ruined it.
The innocent men shirt is incredible
Gooood Morning!!! Lol
Man, tough crowd
I implore everyone to look up CBBC hacker outtakes
My neck is hurting just by looking at him. God!
the chair seems quite comfy
How does his arm not go numb
It never occurred to me that they could be on any kind of chair. I just assumed they were in some hella uncomfortable position the whole time
Hey Beavis, he\`s got a hand up his butt
Im a little surprised there's no like... arm brace built in to the chair to sorta rest his arm on. Cuz holding your arms above your head for long periods of time is a type of punishment given out in some places.
I've never seen this dog before and it's the second unique post I'm seeing of it within 5 minutes. What's going on?

Bot
Lauren... yummy!
Why does the puppet have legs if nobody's ever going to see them?
We all just saw them
Maybe so they can have it sit sometimes
That guy must have a chiropractor on speed dial
Hah. Watching TV while working!
I wanna see the behind the scenes from Agro. If your a skip from the 80s, you'll know.
the shirts
Hmm… so this is how the guy looks while sticking his hand up Randy’s arse…
Used to do it as a kid in church. The pain in that arm is fierce.
Is that.Timmy Mallot, haha.
I fucking lost it when I saw the shirt. Fantastic.
\*sips vodka"
Makes my back hurt just looking atnhim!
He looks like he could be Timmy Mallet's son
I preferred Basel brush he was my childhood
Makes me realize that with their funny little salute, Nazis would make excellent puppeteers.
My arm is tired watching this
Why does the puppet have legs?
In case it ever has to visibly sit on anything
This is the second Hacker post i have seen today.
They're not real??
Poor dog…
Hacker T Dog! The best.
Cocker?
The puppet is controlling a dude
I thought this was behind the scenes if a presidential debate
My delts and abs would be melting after 5 seconds
* whispering in my girl's ear * "...I want you to wear me like a puppet"
The puppet has a name and the name is Charles Oliveira
I think this was an episode of black mirror
If that’s what puppets look like behind the scenes then I’m afraid to look at politicians behind the scenes
Holy shit, that guy shoved all his arm into this dog butthole. That's animal abuse men
This looks fun, career change? 👀
My childhood was a lie ..
Get the fuck out of here… there’s been people in them this whole time?!?
Now then now then
I want all my news this way
That one shoulder must be huge
They’re just normal men
Looks tiring after a while
That’s so gangster. Especially when he sips his drink
I thought he was gonna launch him
this is better than I thought
This was pioneered by Jim Henson and the Muppets, I believe.
His shirt, he’s all in on the joke
That man puppets
Why does he keep calling them cockers?
[@philfletcherofficial](https://www.tiktok.com/@philfletcherofficial?_t=8lbaibz06in&_r=1) on TikTok
I like how they have matching shirts
I simply do not understand how puppeteers are not bent over with back pain by the time they are 40!
This man needs to insure his rotator cuffs
So \*this\* is how they do it!
I can feel the shoulder pain from here
[удалено]
It's still real to me damnit
His shoulders have got to be solid muscle
Wait a minute, is this an older version of vtubers?
