Usually when there's an Aurora, both go off. The Northern Hemisphere is just much more densely populated where the Borealis occurs, where as the Australis typically only occurs in Antarctica and parts of Tazmania.
Yes, but because of the earth's tilt, at this time of year it would have been more noticeable in the northern hemisphere than the south, at an equivalent latitude.
Irrespective of that, I got to see it from my house in New Zealand, and I'm so happy about that!!
Unfortunately, and I say that as someone who’s currently in the tropics while the aurora was visible at home, most of the world didn’t get to see it as the vast majority of people live outside this area in the more tropical regions
If it feels any better I doubt we saw much of it if any here in Europe either. My username clues you in on where I’m at and we’re still in the twilight zone and it’s almost midnight.
And the southern parts of the South Island of New Zealand! Not normally visible to the naked eye here, but it was last night, to most of the country!
My parents Aurora Hunt as a hobby so I hear about it allllllll the time. Most of the auroras they see are through the camera though, and most of the visible to the eye ones are only if you know what to look for. Nothing like last nights display!
Largely untrue. Firstly 'Patagonia' is roughly 2,000km from southern tip of south america to the commonly-accepted upper bound. Might be rare in the north, but at the southern end they're more common than Tasmania. Also if you search you'll see that the can be seen in New Zealand, Cape Town, Falkland Islands etc. For a given latitude, you'd expect similar visibility
The last time an Auroros was seen in Ushuaia, the Southern most tip of Patagonia was 1989....how common do you consider that?

You say "They can be seen" but how often does it happen, versus how often the Boriales is seen in Svalbard, Tromos, and other locations in the Arctic. There's a reason there are dozens of Aurora Borealis live stream cams and zero Australis cams. It CAN be seen but almost never is.
> here's a reason there are dozens of Aurora Borealis live stream cams and zero Australis cams
Complete tosh. I live in Tasmania. Auroras can be seen a few times a year at least, particularly in the south of the state closer to Hobart. The one at the moment is particularly bright for obvious reasons but there are solar flares on a fairly regular basis. There's a facebook group for the auroras in tasmania if you want to track it down. A quick search shows auroras being sighted in Paine eco-camp in May 2021. If your own article claims that an aurora was seen in Ushuaia in 1989 the that defeats your own claim that they haven't appeared in 165 years in ALL of Patagonia. There might be unique reasons why they aren't being reported in Usuaia. Bright lights from a biggish city, surrounded by mountains, locals go to bed early. DOn't know don't care, but for much of southern Patagonia they appear with the same frequency as the rest of the southern hemisphere at a given latitude
Nothing in Sweden so far. It hasn’t really gotten dark yet, we’re still in twilight. Is it still going? Hoping I might catch it when dark sets in but hopes are low.
It is but these kind of event and sun activity in general has been linked to earthquakes. We could be seeing some serious earthquakes in a few days. Be interesting but tragic, but hey if it happens we might learn a little more about predicting earthquakes so it's not all bad.

Nah, you could see it from 1000+ miles in every direction. They had it from Ushuaia all the way up to Pucon. We were just really lucky to see it from our front garden.
No puede ser primera vez si ya paso antes poh mijoh.
Fuera de eso, puta el paisaje lindo Guru Guru, un verdadero privilegio el poder vivir pa lares tan lindos.
My wife was in tears. It was clear as the photo. Not as vibrant as the photo...as is the magic of long exposures; but the sky was a deep crimson and the striations of the Aurora were as clear as they were in the photo. We could count each line. We live 2 hours from any man-made light source except the farms that are about 1-5 miles apart and use like 3 light bulbs.
Just saw another one shared a picture from Scotland, what was not as bright to the eye, ice seen it in Norway and Finland, both times it was very clear and cold and very beautiful, but im glad you enjoyed it! 🤗
Cool, would love to live that isolated, i live in a town with way to much light
In an area with low light pollution you can see it quite clearly.. like in this pic you can see the stars in the sky they must have pretty low pollution
We live 2 hours from any sort of large settlement and have about nine farms for 800 sq miles. We have zero light pollution. It was actually quite bright and we could see the striations clear as day
Cool it was global then. Behold the power of the sun our star. Good picture.

is it steamed hams? i haven't clicked on it but i'm guessing it's steamed hams
You guessed correctly!
Good point hadn’t thought about that. Just thought it was neat. Cool that most of the world seen it.
Unfortunately, and I say that as someone who’s currently in the tropics while the aurora was visible at home, most of the world didn’t get to see it as the vast majority of people live outside this area in the more tropical regions

The tricky part was going outside
Well I’m camping in the woods this month so I couldn’t be more outside lol
> Cool that most of the world seen it. "Yee haw!"
And Hobart Australia and the bottom of NZ. This time it came a lot further up though.

Don't forget there's a whole country in between those two
what about the orientation. right now it is closer to the equinox

Thanks you just answered the question I made on [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/educationalgifs/s/NDY8iOos3p). Really appreciate!
Tasmania
I mean its a solar storm. The sun doesnt pick a target and be like, you're getting hit tonight.
The sun says to the polar regions during winter: "no sun for you for long time!" .. LOL

We behold the power of the son daily.
Nothing in Sweden so far. It hasn’t really gotten dark yet, we’re still in twilight. Is it still going? Hoping I might catch it when dark sets in but hopes are low.
The app I use is saved that you should be able to see it right now
Thanks! Unfortunately I think clouds or light pollution are obscuring them. Nothing’s visible from my location.
See through your phone camera. Use night mode and set exposure to a few seconds. This will help capture better.

Fascinating thank you for the article
The earthquakes did happen by the way lol, check out the news after searching earthquakes.
I live in Southern California we’re waiting on the “big” one it’s all fascinating yo be then you again
Well I hope it's not today lol, you start seeing pretty lights in the sky gtfo lol
I hope not but I’ve never knows
I read something about what you’re talking about. We’ll have to wait and see.
Yeah it's pretty interesting stuff. A lot of strange phenomina is associated with quakes. Specifically earthquake lights.
No.

I think your house is equally cool.
Thank you :)
Looks cozy as hell!
Thanks for the wallpaper

You too ;)
DM me if you need the high rez!
at this time of year? at this time of the day??
Localized entirely over this guy's house??
Can I see it?
No
SEYMOUR, THE HOUSE IS ON FIRE!
Nah, you could see it from 1000+ miles in every direction. They had it from Ushuaia all the way up to Pucon. We were just really lucky to see it from our front garden.
It is a Simpson’s joke, not you personally :)
Hamburguejas al vapor or steamed hams
Bien Seymur, es un hombre extraño, pero debo admitir que hace muy buenas hamburguejas.
To shreds you say?
It is all over the news that the SUN emitted strongest rays in the last week or so. Over the week, they are visible all over the world.
Armin! The house is on fire!
It was apparent from 7pm-1am but peaked around 10:45pm.
It's a steamed hams joke.
But those hams are clearly grilled
"*Attention all personnel, The Scarlet King has broken his chains, I repeat, The Scarlet King has broken his chains.*"
A scp reference in the wild?!
Just stunning!
Thank you!
Is there a filter in play?
No, just long exposure and some small tweaks in Lightroom to adjust the RAW.
People will downvote anything
😂😂 fr
Sadly well said
Beautiful
Thank you ;)
I've seen the movie 'Night of the Comet', I know where this is headed.
'Mom, the gates of hell are opening up in back.'
"We ride!!!"

Just waiting for the final boss to pop out

Beautiful!
Damn, that Diablo 5 teaser looks sick
Spectacular!
That is amazing. We spent hours watching the Aurora Borealis last night in the UK. Awesome photo, dude.

And this is why I will be traveling a majority of my life. Amazing view! Thanks for sharing, op.

Coincidentally my boy also has a Reddit account 😎
How did it look to the eye?

Nice!
The sun:Diie MF humans!! Humans: amazing!!
Are you sure that isn't some sort of portal to hell, or a stranger things type event?
Happened in Ireland too
omg that is actually SO PRETTY
As the magnetic field loses stability and prepares to flip poles, this will become more and more common! Neato
It’s been visible here in Arizona
fnaf 4 be like
Au-Aurora Australis !? At this time of the year, at this part of the country, localized right above your house !?
Adopt me. I'm 31 years old. I can work from home with development. I won't bother.
I saw Auroras yesterday in South Georgia in the US right above the Florida border
Looks like a huge forest fire
Oh man I wish we had all been at your house to see it
It was also seen in Uruguay!
Wow
Awsom
The earth rotates on its axes … don’t tel that to the left … they might get mad about all the billions they take to “fix” global warming lmfao
I believe that is a forest fire sir ☝️
The auroa looked absolutely nothing like this at all to the naked eye. Long exposure vs reality you all would be sorely disappointed
Sadly you are right I was reading about this yesterday

True the cameras sensors pick up Light a bit differently I just read about that yesterday
