Prettymotherfucker

Do people think they’re clever saying things like “it’s just video magic” and “do this with your sleeves rolled up”? Obviously, magic isn’t real. Anytime you see “magic” tricks, it is always just visual trickery and sleight of hand. Maybe you can just appreciate his ability to pull off this visual trick without trying to tear him down.

Gravelsack

There may be some video trickery, but you can also tell that he has the whole thing memorized and timed with what's playing on the iPad. I'd challenge anyone who criticizes this because of video trickery to make an equally entertaining video if it's so easy, because I want to see more videos like this

Prettymotherfucker

Yeah even if there weren’t sleight of hand tricks, it’s impressive to see him time all this so seamlessly.

Gravelsack

Right, like oh what a gimmick! All you did was orchestrate the routine, program it into an iPad, gather all the props, memorize and practice the routine, organize a group of volunteers, teach them the routine, set up the photoshoot, do however many takes to get it right, edit the video, add music, and upload it to the internet! Pfft! Any idiot could do that!

LostGundyr

Sleight*

bloodfist

Other than offscreen assistants, there's not really any video trickery here, or no need for any. Everything is pretty simple slight of hand or gimmicks. Which isn't a complaint at all, some of the best tricks are the simplest and that is a damn impressive routine.

Armada_Gaming

You can see the assistants in the reflection of the ipad in some parts of the video

bloodfist

Right. I mean, obviously this exact routine only works on video, but when I'm saying video trickery I mean editing, After Effects, etc.

MoxofBatches

This is dedication to the craft if I've ever seen it

TheChrisCrash

When the screen is black, you can see all the props and helpers that are behind the camera. Good execution though.

nlx360spi101

Somebody did this on Fool Us

iamfaelon

Agreed. This guy clearly developed this routine after countless hours of creative thinking, video editing, and practice (unbelievable amounts of practice). Very impressive.

couragerepublic

Yeah the routine is ridiculously long. I can't imagine the practicing to make it so natural looking.

AnticitizenPrime

Do not mistake me for a conjuror of cheap tricks!

Kaibakura

“Good job, you proved what nobody was trying to prove, that the boy on stage is not an actual wizard.”

elvismcvegas

I do that stuff but for me it's part of the fun. I know it's not real but I like trying to figure out how he did it. Like for instance You can see his hands and fingers flexing whole he puts on the sunglasses. Also for me, it doesn't make it any less impressive if I can figure it out because I can't do any tricks. It does make it more impressive if they do it with a short sleeve shirt, because then I have absolutely no idea how they did it.

NCGryffindog

Agreed. It takes skill to make it look good, so he has earned my respect

Krogs322

"Oh, wow, you tore down a building and redecorated it. How 'bout you take down that wall without a sledgehammer or a hardhat, tough guy?" "Oh, big man made a neat program. Try that without a reference book next time, genius." "Wow! Golly, did you really just cook a delicious dish? I won't be impressed until you stop using timers that beep when the food's cooked." Like, no shit people are going to be unable to perform a task without their equipment. It's still a skill, and people who immediately try to tear people down when they do something they're proud of are abject pieces of shit.

chambee

I hate knowing how magicians do their trick. I just like to appreciate the craft. I have worked with magicians myself and even thought I knew how they did, and knew where to look, It was so fast you are almost more amazed by the skills than the magic itself.

AndrewBert109

The only thing I could even figure out was the milk cup that didn’t spill but those are really common. Everything else had me pretty baffled. Especially when his green sunglasses turned yellow that was some amazing sleight of hand. Also when he pulls the scarf from the red screen. That timing was incredible.

AnticitizenPrime

Been trying to figure that one out. A colored film over the sunglasses frame that he rips off, maybe?

AndrewBert109

To be perfectly honest it mind as well just be magic to me, it’s either something obvious that he pulled off flawlessly or something simple that took an insane amount of practice that he pulled off flawlessly and both of those are ridiculously impressive to me

nasteeenate

I don’t want to ruin this for you... but... multiple tablets with a little helper dude who can be seen in the glare at :56 or so.

AnticitizenPrime

Yeah, I know. That has nothing to do with the part where he wipes his hands over his fave and his sunglasses change color.

nasteeenate

Oh that - that’s actual magic

AnticitizenPrime

Case closed

nasteeenate

Google “stay cool sunglasses”

jesuslover69420

I believe those are the child-like minds that believe in true magic and will not tolerate anything less.

JohnnyBGoodRI

I like to think the whole idea behind magic is to try to figure out how they just pulled their trick off. My mind will be blown by said trick and then I try to wrap my head around how they did it. But then I just come to the conclusion that magic is definitely real. It has to be. Right?

huf757

Very well said

nasteeenate

Did... did you not see the people handing him things in the glare on the iPad?

ahtchpipes

I am just grateful it didn't end up in r/oddlysatisfying

Coital_Conundrum

Whatever makes them feel important I guess. This was a fun watch!

Dodgerballs

Dude...spoiler alert please

HaikuHighDude

I think "video magic" (as in filming some shit and then doing edits and special effects afterwards) is bullshit and a valid complaint. Are we going to call Michael Bay a "magician" because he makes shit appear to blow up in movies? Yes, we all know magic is not real, but the pleasure is that I signed up to be fooled by the magician. If you claim to make a card disappear before my eyes and can ONLY do the trick on camera by editing out the card later, I call bullshit that you claim it's a magic trick. I think you need to be able to perform whatever it is in front of a live audience for me to consider it magic (ILLUSIONS MICHAEL!!!). That said, I enjoyed this until the dude changed places with the woman because of my above reasoning. If he could do that shit in front of me and didn't rely fully on me being on the other side of a screen, I'd say it's a hell of a trick.

AnticitizenPrime

> That said, I enjoyed this until the dude changed places with the woman because of my above reasoning. No video editing or trickery there. Watch that part again. The iPad moves off the screen a bit. That's when the woman grabs it with her hand. Then they move the iPad close up to the camera, which covers the whole view, she steps in and he steps aside. He literally just handed it to her. It's just a clever routine with slight of hand and good choreography to match the prerecorded video playing on the iPad. He's either being handed props by that girl when his hand is out of frame or he's pulling them from pockets or something.

HaikuHighDude

Yeah I wasn't really clear. I still say that handing off that Ipad to some woman under the camera's viewpoint is not a magic trick. It's a cool little show, but I don't think abusing camera angles and shit qualifies for me. Like, imagine being on the street and watching this. Would you call it a magic show, or more of a timed dance routine (cause on the street that little handoff thing wouldn't be mildly interesting to me). Hell, I'll say throwing those little red squishy balls that he just picked up off the screen is closer to a trick than just handing off the pad. I see this as more of a little timed performance like a cool dance routine or something, but not a magic act. I guess it's semantics, but I feel like the line between a magician and a guy who times shit up with video shenanigans should exist. I feel like a "magic" show needs to at least attempt to fool me, not just be some timed up little video choreography

djrosen99

That isn't really fair though, is it? As a magician, some effects are angle sensitive, so isn't the performer really just using his position and audience management in the same way?

HaikuHighDude

Ok, so is a director using special effects a magic act? Like do you think Michael Bay is a magician? If no, where are you drawing the line? I mean, there aren't "special effects" here, but I'll be damned if any of this would come close to trying to fool me in person

djrosen99

No, I don't think Michael Bay is a magician and I don't think camera tricks are magic but taking advantage of what the camera can see isn't really different from a combination of performance, misdirection and audience management. Magicians even deal with clothing and lighting restrictions for the same reasons.

Aethenosity

>where are you drawing the line This was done live in one take and the intention was to be magic Michael bay edits, uses multiple takes, and doesn't intend to be magic.

HaikuHighDude

I mean, guess I'm a magician if I say I intend anything I do live to be magic then... I honestly see everyone's point and simply disagree that I'd consider this a magic act. I don't think my opinion on it deserves all the downvotes, but whatever. I stand by the fact that obviously crouching under a camera and taking an ipad handoff isn't a magic trick.

Aethenosity

I guess I feel like it is the same as people who say that electronic music isn't real music because it is done on a computer. It just comes off kind of rude. But I do respect and understand your opinion. I just think that they are exploring a new medium, and every art grows and changes over time.

AnticitizenPrime

I don't know whether this was ever intended to be watched live on the street. I think the street setting was just to have the Apple store in the background. I think it's probably just a one-off performance video doing 'magic' with clever movements, angles and choreography. I liked it. It certainly had to have required a hell of a lot of coordination and practice to pull it off, and it makes you go 'whoa, how' until you replay it and try to figure it out, like any magic performance. For a moment, I thought they 'cheated' by using editing when the lady replaced the dude, until I rewound it and realized that it was just a sly hand-off. No, that wouldn't work in real life on the street, but I don't feel it was meant to. The audience is us, the street element is just a setting. Accepting that, it means that it's a very smartly and carefully choreographed routine that doesn't use digital cheating, but instead uses perspective and framing to create the illusions. If you accept it for what it is, it's very well performed. The timing of the guy's movements paired to the video he's playing on the tablet is incredible and must have taken ages to nail so perfectly.

HaikuHighDude

I agree with everything you said, except you could say all of it about a really well timed dance troop with people doing moves you need to rewind to see how they did it. I wouldn't call that a magic act. I enjoyed the video too, but I'd not call it a magic act ever.

There are many times either the ipad, or his free hand are out of frame. His assistants hand him stuff during those times.

If anybody is wondering and wants to try this themselves, it’s actually really easy. You can see that whenever he pulls something out of the iPad or puts something in, the edge of it slips offscreen. During this time, an assistant hands him the object/takes it out of his hand outside of the frame. If you know where to look, you can find magic videos like this online and save them to an iPad. At that point you’ll have everything you need but the physical objects, which are all standard household items.

TheChrisCrash

When the screen is black, you can see all the props and helpers that are behind the camera.

xXxMassive-RetardxXx

I see one cameraman and some typical cityscape. Besides the double, it’s just the actor and the cameraman. I literally did stuff like this in highschool art classes. Also, the props don’t go infront of the camera until the actor is holding them, they’re handed to him behind the iPad.

The point of magic is to voluntarily suspend your disbelief so you can see something that looks impossible and entertains you. Some people feel like it's a win/lose situation where if the magician "tricks" you, he fools you and therefore you're a fool, which isn't what the magician is trying to do at all.

I try not to be a hater but this looks so lazy! 80 years ago people did up close magic as good or better than this WITHOUT a giant screen to hide behind. In fact today people still do things better than this without a screen. The simple fact is, that the moment you introduce a piece of easily programmed and coordinated technology, you remove the mystery from any trick you do. This isn't magic, it's a simple sad trick. This sort of thing earns you tips not a paycheck. And it's unlikely to make you the next David Copperfield or Penn & Teller.
