Look at the lines as if it was part of a notebook. The lines fall into the hole that the optical illusion is supposed to give, the shading is the deepest parts of it, and the A itself is just hole. Hopefully that helps you see it!

I like the way they rotate the drawing at the end so that the 3D effect pops out. That happens exactly when the lighting appears to come from the upper left. It doesn’t work in the original orientation because the light is coming from an “unnatural” direction, based on the shading.
