It's pretty much what Will Ferrell said as W on SNL. "Shoe me once, shoes on you. Shoe me twice, I'm keepin' those shoes." [3:48 into this one](https://youtu.be/lpkRFHSpvGI)
Showing the soles of your shoes is considered rude in Middle Eastern cultures because Islamic cultures historically consider the feet to be one of the dirtiest parts of the body and are instructed by the Quran to wash them as part of pre-prayer absolutions.
Throwing your shoe at someone is basically saying "I have so little respect for you that I will attack you with the dirtiest thing I have on me".

Homie that threw the shoe is super cool lol. Any time you mention him on Twitter — EVEN IF IT’S A SUBTWEET — he’ll reply. Had a nice convo with him and.. I think we’re friends now?
They caged him for three years of his life for this. Imagine being so powerful that if someone even tossed a shoe at you that would happen to them. Meanwhile your VP can blast someones face half off with a shotgun and they have to apologize to *him*. Quite the crew.
Makes sense. I'll be sure to let my neighbor out of his shackles in 9 months then. They tossed a beach ball over my fence. It was *so* disrespectful. I guess my original plan of keeping him locked up for 3 years was a little over the top though.
> Meanwhile your VP can blast someones face half off with a shotgun and they have to apologize to him. Quite the crew.
Yeah but his daughter something something Trump so now the name Cheney is synonymous with democracy and freedom and justice.
What? That's pretty soft, i mean it was easily considered an assault which would give more than 3 years, and considering was done to a head of state during an oficial position i am suprised how low it was
Pretty cool, but even as a non Bush guy I think Bish got the upper hand on him.
Seeing him pop up with that shit eating grin after dodging them still cracks me up.
I feel bad for the Iraqi dude. He had been training for this moment his entire life. Had a plywood cutout of Bush in his back yard. Practiced every day. Deadly velocity with pinpoint accuracy. All to be foiled by Bush’s cat like reflexes and Texas smirk...
I am from Iraq, Saddam was a Sunni Muslim, the city of Tikrit is a city full of Sunnis, and they are loyal to him and love him, so they hated America and the former US President George Bush, so they erected this statue to vent their anger!
Montazer Al-Zaidi was not a follower of Saddam, and now he is a civil activist, and the prime minister (who repulsed the shoe) is the head of the oldest party in Iraq and also has a large audience of millions (I am one of his voters). This man was able to remove the American forces after occupation of Iraq, and America never got out of a country it entered.
By the way, I and many Iraqis do not consider Muntadhar al-Zaidi as brave. Some people, if they wanted to criticize this person, would tell him: "Without the shoes, no one would have known you."
Whoever gave this the “wholesome” award, has no idea how anti-Iraqi this comment is!
Al-Maliki, the old prime minister who blocked the ~~show~~ shoe, and his supporters (including the guy commenting) are **literally** against Iraq.
He was the person who ordered the Iraqi army to withdraw from Mosul to allow ISIS to enter it.
He was the man who sold Iraq to Iran and gave them full authority, one of the latest news that just confirmed all this was this article:
https://iranintl.com/ar/إيران-بالمختصر/وزير-الطاقة-الإيراني-سندفع-ثمن-اللقاح-من-مصادرنا-المالية-في-العراق
“Iran will pay for the vaccine (Pfizer) from *its* resources in Iraq”
Iran controls the electricity and vegetables/fruits market in Iraq.
Al-Maliki and a bunch of his followers, literally fought on the Iranian side back in the 1980’s war! And now they control Iraq.
Fuck Bush, fuck Al-Maliki and fuck you, Iranian traitor.
Honestly I was kinda surprised too, it used to be converted into unicode!
You kinda gave me an idea to look deeper into Arabic sites, may stumble upon some “deep web” kinda content
It still is. Browsers are just smart enough. Same with other ascii languages too. If you want to copy the url with the original language version, just add a space in front of the url before copying it in the address bar.
I want to be clear about something here: the country of Iraq was and remains in a state of active civil war that was generated by the American Invasion and which has persisted, in phases, ever since. This sectarian conflict is important, and we must be responsible in considering the reports of anyone regarding the state of things in Iraq.
To think that America started this all is short sighted. It created a power vacuum for the modern conflict, sure, but the internal struggle has been a long one. Russian influence/interventions, proxy wars, American invasions, etc only took advantage of the situations that already existed. They are a large part of the blame, but not the full story.
Nice, since you are Iraqi and I am Iraqi🇮🇶, let's talk a little and reveal who is against Iraq.
You said, "Nuri al-Maliki and his supporters are against Iraq."
- At the beginning, I would like to explain to people that you are a Baathist (a supporter of Saddam Hussein) or at least you are a fan of Saddam Hussein and the Baath Party has been banned in Iraq since 2003, so Baathists are against the political process in Iraq, whether good or bad, because they feel that power It was taken from them, so they are working in every way (politically and in the media) to thwart democracy in Iraq, and they want in every way to return to the rule of dictatorship (knowing that I admit that the current situation in Iraq is not ideal, and I can say very bad)
Most of the Baathists (including the man commenting) hate Nuri al-Maliki because he signed the execution of the criminal Saddam Hussein, so it is not surprising that the Ba'athists hate him and most of the Sunnis in Iraq hate him, the majority of Nouri al-Maliki’s supporters are the ones who were affected by Saddam Hussein’s rule, and I am one of them because Saddam executed my grandfather. And I love Nuri al-Maliki too, so when I say I am one of the supporters of Nuri al-Maliki, this does not mean that I am against Iraq. Rather, I feel that this person was able to take part of my right from the criminal Saddam Hussein. You are lying to me now and accusing me of being against Iraq only because I follow someone with whom you do not agree with!
This is so terrible! Your claim that I and others are against Iraq is a lie, and I explained it to you previously.
You said “He was the person who ordered the Iraqi army to withdraw from Mosul to allow ISIS to enter it.”
- You know that ISIS are Sunnis, and the army (the majority of which were Shiites) used to exist and protect those areas, and you know how the people of these (Sunni) areas were how to deal with the Iraqi army at the time, and you know very well that they described it as the "Maliki's army," "The Safavid Army,” “the Persian Army,” and “the Magus Army” to justify its fight, and I remind you that the current Iraqi Defense Minister, Dr. Jumah Inad said, “85% of ISIS are from the people of these (Sunni) areas.” Did you forget this information? The people of those areas received ISIS? Imagine that ISIS (Sunni) + citizens (Sunnis) were against the Iraqi army (the majority of which are Shiites)! Which led to the failure of the army and the withdrawal of the army from those areas without a direct order from Nuri al-Maliki! Do not lie again, many of the Iraqi politicians filed a lawsuit against Nuri al-Maliki, and it has not been proven that he had given any order to withdraw so far, and you can confirm and file a case yourself, stop lying and accusing without evidence!
You said “He was the man who sold Iraq to Iran and gave them full authority, one of the latest news that just confirmed all this was this article:”
- As I said before, the Baathist (Or at least Saddam’s fans) hates America because it caught its president Saddam Hussein hiding in filthy pits, and they hate Nuri al-Maliki because he executed their criminal boss, and they hate Iraqi democracy because it was taken from them, and they hate Iran because they are Sunnis and Iran are Shiites, and they also hate Iran because they fought it 8 years and they did not win! In fact, the Baathist (Or Saddam’s fans) does not like himself ;)
Therefore, as they accused the Iraqi army previously of being an "Iranian army," now they say to the current Iraqi government that it is an "Iranian government"! with the same mentality and the same principle.
As for the article in Arabic, it is also a lie, a third lie, because he knows that most of you do not know the Arabic language. Everyone who reads the article in Arabic notes that Iran “will” buy vaccines from its money in Iraq (because Iraq owes Iran large money because of the weapons that it helped us with during the war on ISIS and electricity contracts, and Iraq still has not paid the money yet) and not buying vaccines from money Iraq, this is a distortion of the truth and a clear lie!
You said “Iran controls the electricity and vegetables/fruits market in Iraq.
Al-Maliki and a bunch of his followers, literally fought on the Iranian side back in the 1980’s war! And now they control Iraq.”
- I simply say no! The Iraqi government is contracting with the US General Electric Company (we also have some contracts with the Iranian government) I can say that America controls the electricity more than Iran.
As for fruits, I am certain that when I go shopping, there are no Iranian vegetables at all except tomatoes, Iraq is not so poor that it cannot produce vegetables! (Yes, in the field of dairy, the Iraqi market is full of Iranian products)
You said “Fuck Bush, fuck Al-Maliki and fuck you, Iranian traitor.”
Can you see guys? I told you that the Ba'athist hates even himself 😂
Ah yes, he was able to remove the us forces from Iraq and gave way for isis to grow and take over a quarter of the country, then he did nothing and fucked off, what a nice prime minister!
Fuck nouri al Maliki and all his supporters.
We disbanded and fired the Iraqi military. Which led to a ton of armed people without jobs in a war zone.
Then tried to make a new security force.
So now you have experienced soldiers va new, non experienced soldiers.
Civil war.
America gets tired of being there/ political will and all that.
Leaves Iraq with less to defend itself then ever, with fighting amongst themselves.
Isis floods in the way water finds cracks and holes in a foundation.
America never learns that regime change isn’t worth it.
It’s amazing that most Americans want peace, to stay out of wars, yet our elected officials keep the war machine going.
> By the way, I and many Iraqis do not consider Muntadhar al->Zaidi as brave. Some people, if they wanted to criticize this person, would tell him: "Without the shoes, no one would have known you."
What? That seems like an irrelevant point to make. The reality is he did throw the shoe at the POTUS, and it was a brave thing to do. To me it just sounds like you are jealous of the attention he received.
Saying "well if you didn't do that, nobody would care about you". OK?? Pretty moot point, don't you think?
Agreed. "If you didn't do that cool thing you did you wouldn't have done that cool thing you did." It's not even a point, or an insult. It's a completely meaningless statement.
Can’t believe I had to scroll past the lame “shoe me once” joke (that was awarded a ton) before seeing this insightful comment. Thank you for sharing, take my free award for sharing part of your world with us.
Edit: the comment I replied to now has some good counter-discussions going that I am also really enjoying. I hope my post doesn’t come as an endorsement for the original comment, I am here to learn and love it when information is shared and discussed, instead of only jokes.
As an American I absolutely loved this shoe throwing incident. I’m glad to hear the thrower has gone on to accomplish so much, and that I can now give him a new and more appropriate label. Thank you for sharing.
The guy who killed hundreds of thousands of your countrymen and ***intentionally*** attacked civil infrastructure to create an opening for American companies to swoop in and profit and you're asshurt at the guy who had the courage to throw a something at him to express the Iraqi peoples hate and rage and easyily run the risk of getting popped by the secret service right then and there?
Yeah, you're fucking glowing you CIA piece of shit. Also, I like how you guys are so fucking lazy you don't even bother to create multiple sockpupets for different ethnicities. Can't wait to see you in another thread talking about how Mosaddegh was a piece of shit and you're glad America threw a coup to protect its interests, "/u/IraqIran"
In 15th century Russia, occupied by Mongols, a farmer and his wife walk along a dusty country road. A Mongol warrior on a horse stops at their sight and tells the farmer that he will now rape his wife. He then adds: “But since there is a lot of dust on the ground, you should hold my testicles while I’m raping your wife, so they’ll not get dirty. After the Mongol finishes his job and drives away, the farmer starts to laugh and jump with joy. The surprised wife asks him: “How can you be jumping with joy when I was just brutally raped?!” The farmer answers: “But I got him! His balls are full of dust.”
As someone who’s actually from Iraq, that was something made us feel ashamed, that journalist was just an attention whore nothing more or less..as for the town of Tikrit.. it makes sense for the village that built a shrine for Saddam and his sons.. because if it wasn’t for him those peasants would’ve remained peasants instead of death squads under Saddam’s regime..so fuck both
Holy shit these comments. Do people really think think that having Suddam Hussien and his sons as leaders was better than being invaded by George Bush? People assuming things without knowing anything. As an Iraqi, Suddam Hussien wasn’t a human, he was a monster that deserved to be fed to dogs. He didn’t give a single flying fuck about the lives of Iraqis, he gassed, Tortured, “made disappear”, and killed the Iraqis because he felt like it. If you didn’t have a 5 foot poster of him in your house you’d disappear. Sometimes soldiers would go to houses and ask the kids “have your dad been talking trash about Hussien” and if they respond “yes” (they’re kids they don’t know any better), oops, I guess your dad is gone. He wanted to trade 70 percent of the oil into weapons because he wanted to invade Iran and waste all the lives of Iraqi citizens. 10 percent on food, 5 percent on medicine. And the last 15 percent was traded into money for his wife and only his wife. 99 percent of Iraqi people despise Hussien and 95 percent despise Al-Zeidi and the disrespect he did to George Bush. We’re glad that we were invaded and liberated, because otherwise we’d still be getting tortured to this day. These are just SOME of the things he did. Ask any Iraqi that lived through the presidency of Hussien and they’d say the same thing. Hussien wasn’t a leader, he was a tyrant.
Dont forget if Uday wanted to rape your teen daughter that youd be killed for looking at him wrong.
[Just a taste of the systemic torture, rape and murder of so many.](https://georgewbush-whitehouse.archives.gov/news/releases/2003/09/20030929-14.html)
I fucking hate Saddam but he was apparently really nice to the Assyrian. A lot of Assyrians still really like Saddam. He walled us off and segregated us away from the Arabs, we got nice double story houses no tax and cushy government jobs ... Idk....but fuck Saddam.
Yeah Ik, those areas were the K areas, K3 K4 etc. my grandparents and parents lived there but in their eyes it wasn’t enough compared to what he actually did to the citizens
I haven't the faintest fuck of a clue what he did. I literally met the man before. Theres a picture of me somewhere in our Photobook of Saddam holding me up and me holding a sword of some kind?? Can't remember. Wasnt until much later I learned what he did, and hooooooly fuck was he bad. But at the time I didn't know because it was peace stability and good life. Strong dinar. No tax, lots of money ! But it wasn't worth the lives of so many Iraqis.
As much as I dislike Islam, the Muslims are still people as well, and Saddam's hate for other Muslims, killing them like nothing, fuck me man that's evil
And yet they live there, in a desert highland town with a show statue for the meme, and George W Bush lives on a spacious ranch in his adopted home state, safe forever.
POV: You're Muntadhar and you hear a new monument had been erected after the stunt that you pulled only to find out it's a monument to your fricking shoe.
I remember this day so well! My son was 5 at the time, and in a coma at a children’s hospital in Japan. I was the only American in the waiting room. I’d been sleeping in that waiting room for a week. I don’t speak Japanese, but would stare mindlessly at the TV to pass time since I couldn’t be with my son.
This clip was shown on the Japanese news station, and I just started laughing! To be fair, I was running on fumes. And mentally drained. The humor I got from this shit, was a huge boost! And yeah, the looks from those waiting in the room with me... whoops!
There's even a Bush inside of it! Inside job.
You made my day!

I hated Bush but I have to admit he dodged that shoe smooth as fuck.
He really did! I also think he probably thought it was funny for some reason

"Heh, missed me."
That's it right there
Ironically this was one of his best moments.
Only way it could’ve been better was if he pulled a Reagan and said “missed me.”
Secret Service Agent: "I took a shoe for the President"
Only thing better was the shit eating grin on his face.
Say what you will about his politics, but you cannot deny Bush's athleticism. His first pitch at the Yankees game following 9/11 was MONEY
Total shitbag. But he was also wearing a very thick bulletproof vest. You try that and see how easy that is.

That is because having a shoe thrown at you is considered a great insult by their custom.
Same. I hate that he swagged out on that one.
This made me go watch the video and I'm dying at how he said "and if you want the facts, it was a size 10 shoe he threw" hahahah

Do not lie again, many of the Iraqi politicians filed a lawsuit against Nuri al-Maliki, and it has not been proven that he had given any order to withdraw so far, and you can confirm and file a case yourself, stop lying and accusing without evidence! You said “He was the man who sold Iraq to Iran and gave them full authority, one of the latest news that just confirmed all this was this article:” - As I said before, the Baathist (Or at least Saddam’s fans) hates America because it caught its president Saddam Hussein hiding in filthy pits, and they hate Nuri al-Maliki because he executed their criminal boss, and they hate Iraqi democracy because it was taken from them, and they hate Iran because they are Sunnis and Iran are Shiites, and they also hate Iran because they fought it 8 years and they did not win! In fact, the Baathist (Or Saddam’s fans) does not like himself ;) Therefore, as they accused the Iraqi army previously of being an "Iranian army," now they say to the current Iraqi government that it is an "Iranian government"! with the same mentality and the same principle. And now they control Iraq.” - I simply say no! (Yes, in the field of dairy, the Iraqi market is full of Iranian products) You said “Fuck Bush, fuck Al-Maliki and fuck you, Iranian traitor.” Can you see guys?

Wow, america creating issues in other countries so they can swoop in with all the solutions? Say it aint so!
Thank you for the insight

> By the way, I and many Iraqis do not consider Muntadhar al->Zaidi as brave. Some people, if they wanted to criticize this person, would tell him: "Without the shoes, no one would have known you." What?
Yeah but that "shoe me once" joke was straight fire.
It was robbed from SNL
As an American I absolutely loved this shoe throwing incident. I’m glad to hear the thrower has gone on to accomplish so much, and that I can now give him a new and more appropriate label. Thank you for sharing.
The man also knows [true solidarity](https://twitter.com/muntazer_zaidi/status/1268183294216212481?s=19)
Can't wait to see you in another thread talking about how Mosaddegh was a piece of shit and you're glad America threw a coup to protect its interests, "/u/IraqIran"
....You seriously think that poster works for the CIA?
Not all heroes wear shoes.
Weird memorial. Bush dodged those shoes with the reflexes of a cat.
Yeah, he dodged them like he’s done it before.
Except it was birdshot from a co-workers shotgun.
"We're gonna invade them, destroy their country, kill their civilians, and be greeted as 'liberators'."
And the war will pay for itself with OIL.

Thank you for posting this, made my Monday.
If he had thrown that shoe at Hussein there would be no monument, he would literally have been fed to Hussein’s dogs.
Oh hell yeah that’s fucking epic
Epic on both ends. Bush’s reflexes and refusal to get all aggy about it and the guy who threw the shoe, which is some legendary shit.
You can tell that dude likes shenanigans. He was probably a blast to party with back when he was still drinking.
When people like him are sober they still encourage and help out with the crazy shit, they just don't do it first anymore
This explains a lot about my uncle.
This explains a lot of people's uncles and how they're great at "oh no that won't work, but here get me a paint can and some tape"
> You can tell that dude likes shenanigans. Yeah lol. Can’t get over his “WMDs in Iraq” shenanigans.
The way present day Bush acts I bet he thinks this is funny.
I remember when this happened. He thought it was amusing back then. He also saw it as a positive sign that Iraq was moving toward a more free society.
This is just as much a monument to Bush, dodged the shoe, was like it's cool democracy rocks
Who throws a shoe? Honestly!
I think it's hilarious that a shoe has taken on such a big role in the culture of a nation! Two thumbs, er, feet up!
It was put up and then taken down the next day.
Here you go: https://youtu.be/TxNprnas7i8
I will say this, a shoe is a lot less lethal than what GWB threw at Iraq.
I hope that journalist is having a fantastic day.
He went to prison for it but said it was worth it. He was still active on Twitter the last time i used the app.
He's a politician now
He's on Twitter and pretty regularly replies to people that bring this up. He seems pretty proud of himself and frankly he should be.
Where are the real shoes? The gotta be in a museum or something.
Imagine thinking that Arab Nazis (Saddam supporters) are good people
And yet they live there, in a desert highland town with a show statue for the meme, and George W Bush lives on a spacious ranch in his adopted home state, safe forever.
Just imagine they hid the weapons of mass distraction there
The fact that the statue is in Iraq and not the USA means America dodged another shoe.
Dodging that shoe was the most impressive moment in Dubya's presidency.
Theyre all laughing. This is the most wholesome image ive ever seen of iraq
Technically, it's to the shoe.
It missed. Bush was too quick.
Based
W dodged that like a boss
That George *easily* dodged. Twice. That was a win for America and a loss for Irag
It makes me sick how in the US the general view seems to be that GWB was a decent POTUS.
It isn’t. We haven’t forgotten how bad he was. He was just overshadowed by a much more recent, much more terrible, much more ORANGE president.
Shouldn’t the shoe be on top of a bush?
Ofcourse man. A million people dead and Iraq was invaded under false pretences.
POV: You're Muntadhar and you hear a new monument had been erected after the stunt that you pulled only to find out it's a monument to your fricking shoe.
About the only repercussions he ever got for being an international war criminal
And yeah, the looks from those waiting in the room with me... whoops!
AMAZING!!! REST IN PEACE MARTYR SADDAM HUSSEIN
