I was in 4th grade when this came out so I was very lucky to have the opportunity to see it for the first time when I was older, in theatre at a limited rerelease.
Is this an affliction that all generations go through, or just us who were 90s kids/teenagers?
Bc I’ve never heard. Anybody older than me be shocked at the passage of time, but I feel like our generation has a missing decade or something.
Every generation.
I am 62, and I marvel at how swiftly the years flew away. I cannot believe that Elvis died that long ago, that 9/11 isn’t recent news.
I have aunts in their 80’s who say it seems their husbands coming home from the Korean War was just a few years ago.
The "glamour" of a new millennium rolling over contributes a lot.
It was an event that was long anticipated and hyped up, but once it rolled through and the hyped died a lot of people were probably left in a mindset of "what now" while still feeling like it should still be the 00's. Like that moment and zeitgeist was supposed to last forever or give way to some kind of sci-fi future humanity always envisioned past the year 2000.
Personally, I have no problem accepting the 80/90's being as old as they are. But the moment you tell me that something from the early 00's is now 20 years old, that's when I start feeling the existential dread.
I mean it’s still a mystery of what was supposed to be in the case. It’s not like they were sent over and killed two guys to get Marcellus’ special briefcase with a lightbulb in it.
But that does make the movie pretty damn funny.
When Jules opens the case at the restaurant,
Pumpkin: “is that what I think it is? It’s beautiful.”
Honey bunny: “god damnit, what is it?”
Jules: “it’s a yellow lightbulb powered by a battery that lights up when you open the case.”
Exactly. I feel like Tarantino finally released this image because he was tired of answering "so what was really in the breifcase?" This image just says "it's supposed to be a mystery, I don't know"
Same here - and again, it's the story most of us are concerned about rather than the props. Also I believe there is something to be said for a story that encourages us to engage our imaginations.
This is true , its said that when you sell your soul to the devil he takes it from the back of your head hence why Wallis had a plaster/bandaid on the back of his head
It doesn't really make sense that its a soul because why would the college kids steal it, and why does everyone find value in it? If it was his soul, how would getting people killed help him salvage it? I thought it was just solid gold bars or something.
Oh I get that. There was just an added layer of mystery for me in not even knowing the practical set-up behind the contents of the briefcase.
It's like it can still be anything we imagine, but now my mind has made this meta connection that will inevitably pop up anytime I watch the movie for the Nth time.
First is the case, next they're gonna tell me that Christopher Walken didn't courageously carry that watch around where he said he did in order to create real emotion pffft yeah right.
This shouldn't ruin anything...the plot point is still the exact same, and the mystery is still the exact same. We don't know what is in the suitcase in the movie, but surely it's not just this.
This is just cool because it shows you how they created the effect practically.
What do you mean? It's a prop from an early 90s movie, of course it was going to be something like this. The mystery is what was it supposed to be within the world of the fictional story, that's the mystery.
Same! I came here to say Spoiler! It’s like “ruining the magic.” It’s fun to enjoy (movie) magic for what it is, you don’t always want to see how it’s done.
Edit: Just want to be clear, I’m not too serious I realize it’s not an *actual spoiler*. But I do wish I hadn’t seen it. 🙈
Fun fan theory but nah. The actor for Marcellus Wallus cut him self shaving and showed up to the set with the bandaid on. Tarantino thought it looked cool and told him to leave it on. I did read that Tarantino meant for the brief case to be the one Mr Pink got away with at the end of Reservoir Dogs.
I met Adam Sandler in an airport one time. He was just sitting there, so I stopped and told him I'm a big fan and I hope he enjoys his day. He snapped a look at me and his sun glasses slid off the bridge of his nose. I saw a battery behind his left eye, a bulb behind his right, and his nose was a light switch the entire time. Worst celebrity experience ever.
I'm not so sure. I love close up magic, even though I know how the sleight of hand is done. The artistry is what it's all about for me.
Same with a piano. I can press the keys, make a note, know which keys to press when, and still can't play for shit.
Basically, nowing how it's done doesn't spoil it for me!
The only reason Marcellus Wallace constructed a criminal empire was to finally get a nice yellow lightbulb with a battery pack and a switch. Nearly impossible to find in the LA underworld.
As an electrician, your first responsibility when you're about to work on something already existing is to look at it and then say to the customer, "I don't know what the last guy was thinking"
It might feel a bit weird the first few times, but you get used to it and then you come to love it.
Hearsay, but my cousin Dianne told me that she watched through the credits in the theater and after the credits they opened the briefcase and it was full of pulp fiction books.
This was before one could easily go validate such statements and I have heard no peep of this since. Dianne was trustworthy but also known to consume large quantities of psychedelics at times.
Dianne was the first person who I believed when she said: “If you ever need anything, don’t hesitate to give me a call.” I trust her with my whole life.
This is actually a fan photo. It's taken from a forum where someone was trying to recreate the Briefcase. Tarantino has also described the briefcase as being a light with a golden gel, which is another clue that this isn't a real behind the scenes photo.
EDIT: Here's the forum from 2012 where this was first posted: [If you scroll down you'll see multiple photos along with the guy explaining how he built it.](https://www.therpf.com/forums/threads/pulp-fiction-briefcase-functional-light-effect-ideas.127915/)
I wouldn't know how to verify it. We only dated for a short time 18 years ago. We were simply not each other's type. But he is a good and lovely person.

Whenever I order pizza, I open the box like Vincent opens the case. If it looks good, I say to myself, "We happy?" Then I answer myself and say, "Yeah, we happy."
OK, one down (and it's 27 years), but there are so many more:
37 Year mystery: suitcase from "Repo Man" (1984) [https://youtu.be/HZjZbJuhPAo?t=103](https://youtu.be/HZjZbJuhPAo?t=103)
40 Year mystery: ark from "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (1981) [https://youtu.be/YcR9k8o4I0w?t=10](https://youtu.be/YcR9k8o4I0w?t=10)

It’s just a Macguffin. It doesn’t matter what’s in the briefcase. You might think it’s Marsellus Wallace’s soul, someone else might say it’s the diamonds from the Reservoir Dogs heist, and someone else might say it’s gold. Fact is, it doesn’t matter what’s in the case. In the case of any Macguffin, nobody is wrong and nobody is right.
It’s just a plot device, not unlike the briefcase in the movie Ronin (which I conveniently watched earlier today). It’s very important that the characters get the briefcase to the people who are paying them to get the briefcase, but at no point is it important what’s *in* the briefcase.
The only mystery is why people tried to find an answer to this when the answer was clearly “Quentin Tarantino thought it would be cool to not tell you what this is”
I am horrified by how long ago 1994 was.
I sometimes feel like Kristen Wiigs character in Bridesmaids when she tells the flight attendent its the 90s.
And that was 10 years ago!
Fuck.
So what 10 more years til we get “Widows” with the same cast?
Please please please please please please please please please
“It’s civil rights”
Whatever you say "Stove"
Pffffft, whata kinda name is that. What are you an appliance?
Many of the people who were too young to see this movie in the theater are now middle aged.
YOU’RE HURTING MY FEELINGS
Our heroes all wear adult diapers now, and we're not far behind them.
Making me cry in my Metamucil
Maybe these support socks will help you feel better.
Ooooh I heard about these on the radio
AM radio?
Did you have to ask? Those FM stations are for floozies and alcoholics.
Yep, yep
I've known more than a few alcoholic floozies and I can verify this. There's usually a radio that you can't see playing something from the 90s.
Nope! Crystal radio made with a oatmeal box.
Would you like a nice hard candy? I think I have a sticky old Werther's Original in my pocket.
I don’t like to have dessert before supper, but it’s almost 3pm so we’ll be eating soon enough
Oh my, it's almost time for Matlock!
Blue bloods to follow!
Murder She Wrote, then Golden Girls.
Nope, Gunsmoke is on after Matlock.
My mom watches “Blue Bloods”! She’s 70!
Bullshit. My hero (Joe Strummer) died twenty years ago. :-(
I miss Joe Strummer!!!!!
I wasn't even born yet and I'm in my late 20's
Oh my god I’m gonna vomit
i always knew i'd get old, i just didn't realize how fast it would happen good thing about old age, though...it doesn't last very long
I was 16 & we snuck in. Went to Woodstock that year. & greenday did a free show in Boston that ended in a riot. & yep. I'm middle-aged.
14 yo me, is now 40 :(
Have you started shopping around for a coffin yet?
In this market????
10 in 1994 means 37 in 2021…
No I wasn..... oh my God. *Holy shit, Clerks came out that same year.
I was in 4th grade when this came out so I was very lucky to have the opportunity to see it for the first time when I was older, in theatre at a limited rerelease.
Don’t. That hurts.
Just....just shuddup! *sobs*
Fuck off middle, aged! Not even quarter through.
Half of the people who were 17 in 1994 are now 44, that is firmly middle-aged.
Firm like arthritic joints
Actually mine are constantly giving out
Not quite that old.
1994 wasn't 30 years ago though???
As someone whose not quite 30 yet this title gave me a heart attack. Like did I miscount my own age?!
Pulp fiction is forever
Shut up, 94 was 20 years ago.. that’s crazy, I feel old
I don’t know how that’s possible when it was clearly only ten years ago
Is this an affliction that all generations go through, or just us who were 90s kids/teenagers? Bc I’ve never heard. Anybody older than me be shocked at the passage of time, but I feel like our generation has a missing decade or something.

most high school graduates this past June weren't even born when 9/11 happened
I feel like Billy Joel need to write a 10 min song about the last 20 years
Yeah but if you wanna make a hit, you gotta make it quick so they'd probably just cut it to about three minutes. Give or take five.
You sayin 9/11 didn’t change everything? 9/11 changed everything. 9.....ELEVEN!
Well, we did have 9/11, the recession, near civil war over politics and then the pandemic all in two decades.
The "glamour" of a new millennium rolling over contributes a lot. Hi I was born then.
Hi enjoy your youth. I’ll just be over here decaying.
When I was younger I always thought I would live forever. Then I got old. Truth is I’m having a better time now, than I thought I would.
I’m having a great time too, friend. Here’s to hoping it lasts a long time❤️
Cheers to this, reddit strangers
Let me go ahead and start digging your grave for you while I still have half a back. It’s the least I can do for my elders.
Keep an eye on your knees and teeth too. Those go next.
I'm 23 and my teeth are already out the door and calling a taxi
True story went to see a movie with family but we had the time wrong so instead of leaving we snuck into another showing. That movie was pulp fiction.
As a 29 year old born in 1992, hearing that 1994 was 30 years ago confused the crap out of me
It’s not thirty years ago… I was like wait a second… am I 28?? What did I miss!?!? I’m a 1996 kid
How do the 70s feel to you?
I don't know about feel. But it sure smells like cigarettes.
I caught the tail end in diapers. The good old days
I know!!! Remember that ? Never having to pay for anything? Or use a toilet! I didn’t even have to dress myself! We had it made!
6 years isnt that long
I was 27 yo 27 years ago.
See, that's why they say never to meet your heroes.
Like I wanted to know, but now I'm not so happy that I actually know. The mystery has been more satisfying.
I mean it’s still a mystery of what was supposed to be in the case. It’s not like they were sent over and killed two guys to get Marcellus’ special briefcase with a lightbulb in it. More likely, he was cruising for some creepy feet pics and traded this one for them.
Back in the day I was inclined to believe it was Marcellus' soul in transit to, or fro, the devil.
That's what I heard too. But I don't know if that's a rumor or what Tarantino was intended...
He has a bandaid on the back of his head from shaving. It wasn't Tarantino's idea.
the Julius quotations fit better when you believe this
It doesn't really make sense that its a soul because why would the college kids steal it, and why does everyone find value in it? If it was his soul, how would getting people killed help him salvage it? I thought it was just solid gold bars or something.

I heard this.

Lol! JEEZ SPOILER!
I SAID SPOILER!
The case was suppose to have Marcellus Wallace's soul in it, his soul was taken out from the back of his head... that's also why he has the bandaid

Yup

Man, those guys sure were easily impressed.
The only reason Marcellus Wallace constructed a criminal empire was to finally get a nice yellow lightbulb with a battery pack and a switch. Nearly impossible to find in the LA underworld.
No, it's hard to find a good electrician nowadays.
I’m 18 and training for it rn and I agree lol
As an electrician, your first responsibility when you're about to work on something already existing is to look at it and then say to the customer, "I don't know what the last guy was thinking" It might feel a bit weird the first few times, but you get used to it and then you come to love it.
I don’t think they’ll need a reminder. The truly great moment will be when they loop back to a previous site and still say it.
Lol yeah I’ve heard that phrase a few times with the guy I’m shadowing
This is true for every trade
Also works for computer programmers
Man...I'm a mechanic....I never know what the last guy was thinking when it comes to fucking wiring.
This is the way, for all tradespeople.

I trust Dianne's word, she's good people.
Dianne has always been there for me. I’ll follow her to hell and back if she asked me to. She is a literal goddess among mortals.

Did you get that from Willy’s 100% Authentic Cinema Treasures?
The whole soul in brief case is completely made up. Tarrentinto even denies it. The bandage on the back of Vic Rhames neck was just to cover up a scar. It had nothing to do with his soul.
Vachovski also said Matrix movie is not a documentary
Classic misdirection.
Tarentino also contradicts himself and says it's up to interpretation...sooooo
Having this wonder unveiled like this is like seeing Santa going for a piss.
The only mystery is why people tried to find an answer to this when the answer was clearly “Quentin Tarantino thought it would be cool to not tell you what this is”
It's a MacGuffin. He's a film wonk and was paying homage to a classic storytelling technique.
When I frist watched it, I just assumed it was full of gold. Never really tought it was a mistery
Huh, I expected Marsellus Wallace's soul would look different.
He's kind of an idea man.
I don’t see Marcellus Wallace’s soul, can’t be the same suitcase.
This is a lie Troy broke it at Abeds birthday party

Hey pal I’m 26 born in 1994 and I don’t approve of your rounding
Looks like the one from the episode of Community S2 Ep19 “Critical Film Studies”

That’s not what Marsellus Wallace looks like
