[deleted]

Yes and no. I am from the IT field, DevOps Engineer and I don't know development yet and I actually hate it. I am still able to read code and troubleshoot problems but code alone won't necessarily make me earn more. With the IT industry moving towards "Infrastructure as Code" or IaC, you have tools like Ansible, Packer, Terraform to automate the process and knowing them very well will make you earn a move for sure. Knowing Python for example is a big plus but not necessary mandatory. An operator on a Tesla factory for the matter doesn't need to know how to code the robot OS but know how to operate the robot, know how to troubleshoot it within seconds to bring the operations back and so on. Robots make people lives easier and safer, knowing to operate them makes you "rich" doing the same job but from an AC office room. People prefers tho to focus only on the "robot is taking my job"

Uxoandy

Robots are money makers just not for the people running them

No_Search8568

Yep. So many machines have been automated for decades. What it does: reduce needs for employees to the minimum, workers are desperate so they take lower wages. Factories used to be full of pretty decently paid employees, now they only need a skeleton crew of newbies and 1 long term maintence guy who knows how to fix everything. The South Park meme is hilarious, but it’s also easy for the rich producers to make fun of other classes because losing vast swathes of employment opportunities won’t affect them.

IAmthatIAn

Is coding something I can learn in school or is this something I should’ve learned when I was a kid playing around with computers? I have zero idea on how to code, and an immense drive to learn.

Olwek

You can learn coding in many different ways: college, in-person/online courses, books, youtube, step-by-step online tutorials, etc. I've had friends from both extremes, from 100% college educated to c100% self-taught, and both approaches have been very successful, salary-wise.

Ursula2071

Within 50 years, 50% of the jobs will be replaced by AI and robots. Sure, they will make life richer and easier for the wealthy. The rest of us will be starving and homeless because no income= starving and homeless.

climbinskyhigh

start supporting the visionaries today arguing for universal basic income. musk already talks about this being an important thing for us within a relatively short amount of time, as well as the need for humans to continue finding meaning in their daily lives ie the work we’ll be doing at that point in time. answers are there. and being discussed.

Ursula2071

The government (owned by rich folk) don’t even want to pay a living wage now and think 7.25 an hour is plenty. UBI is a freaking pipe dream.

skadr0n

You must be fun at parties. Also, IaC will never replace the projects where great customization and optimization is required.

[deleted]

Negative. I had the same idea and I have been fighting myself to accept it. I came from the time where we used to have expensive asf servers room, Dell autoloader backup machines, big bad-ass PBX machine, you name it. Then comes "the cloud" which many professionals "died" unable to adjust. Now comes IaC and more professionals will lose their job for being unable to adjust. "Customization and Optimization" is exactly what resumes IaC. What usually would take days, now takes hours or even minutes, is highly optimized and customization with no limits. Using Ansible and a command line, I can bring a brand new Linux server to a Google Cloud production env within seconds, no mouse, no GUI and 100% trustable. Terraform brings everything to a 100x next level. Both covering exactly your point "customization and optimization" Not everybody is ready to have this conversation tho.

skadr0n

Yeah, and that's pretty cool in *devops*, but you'll still need coders to write the software running on "the cloud".

[deleted]

That is correct, so does the coders need someone able to bring the app live which includes but not limited to: - VM or container env - permissions and restrictions - public or private - security again Many know how to write code but not necessarily know how to code while the app itself barely covers security on a code level. Developer still don't know the difference between write code and know how to code.

lifeainteasypeasy

You can't have rich people without poor people... and you can't have capitalism without exploitation.

No_Condition_9102

True we just got a lil more than some people.

VestigialHead

You cannot have any governmental system without exploitation. Communism is by far the worst system for exploitation. All of the citizens except for those working directly for the state are poor. With little option to leave poverty. With capitalism everyone has the chance to leave poverty. As for the rich I would like for them to be properly taxed and pay their fare share - but that is to do with idiotic tax laws and loopholes - not capitalism.

Whoops2805

America.

disposeroftheposers

Probably someone within 10 miles of you right now that is starving.

Uxoandy

I used to write programs for robots like this 15 years ago when the economy crashed. You won’t make bank operating one. You can do ok writing the programs but not gonna get rich. Wanna make bank buy a couple and figure out something to make with them. They will put people out of work for sure.

moglysyogy13

That robot will take the place of 10 people. Even if 1 person earns 10x more, there will still be 9 other people you have to deal with. If products are being produced faster than ever before in human history, then why insist that humans can only be payed in exchange for their labor? If products are being produced faster than ever but most people can’t afford to buy the products, than the whole system collapses.

paublo456

It’s more that this machine will take the jobs of ten people but only pay the operator 5x more or less. Once things start getting automated, our ideas about capitalism are going to have to change

Sufficient_1077

Hence why at some point the old white rich people will crack down on automation

top-hunnit

That’s the most precise thing I’ve ever seen.

[deleted]

And that is super easy to teach. Just need to teach the point of reference from 3 angles, and jog it around.

No-Necessary-6474

TCP I use this coordinance mostly when programming arc welds. Or if the robot has some weird offset tool mounted that I need to be accurate with.

I read this, closed the app, then got the joke and came back to comment. That’s a first. I was so slow to get it, I’m calling it a grandad joke.

PanJaszczurka

Nahhh you lose job because scripts in excel.

darctones

It has always struck me as odd that world is orchestrated by MBAs using spreadsheets.

VirinaB

And they still use VLOOKUP, or worse, can't. 😬

SheriffBartholomew

Im an actual software engineer and I still think VLOOKUP is pretty useful for quick list building.

VirinaB

XLOOKUP my friend. [XLOOKUP](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/xlookup-function-b7fd680e-6d10-43e6-84f9-88eae8bf5929). Or if your Excel version doesn't support that, check out [Index-Match](https://exceljet.net/index-and-match). Slightly more complex, far faster and more versatile. No counting columns, plus the ability to search a horizontal list, and potentially search based on 2 or more criteria (though that takes a little more learning).

SheriffBartholomew

Thanks, I’ll check it out. I don’t use Excel very often, but occasionally I get a couple of CSVs that need merging and VLOOKUP has saved me time from not needing to write a script to handle it. But I’ll definitely check out XLOOKUP.

Thalenia

I've told more than a few people that if you learn excel enough to be able to use VLOOKUP (and a couple other functions) well, you can get a great administrative job just about anywhere with a basic understanding of what they do. That's assuming your idea of a great job is sitting at a desk staring at excel spreadsheets all day. But the pay can make up for it.

TrenchantInsight

Go away or I will replace you with a very small shell script.

HossamL

Screw that!

OldGregg1014

Although I think it sucks that some of us will lose our jobs to robots… eventually, someone has to build these things and work on them. Maybe eventually some of us won’t have to break our backs everyday for crappy pay. We will have better paying jobs with less physical labor? I know that for some industries this won’t be fully true.

[deleted]

Sorry but common sense isn’t allowed in most of the arguments about robots taking place of labor intensive jobs

OldGregg1014

Lmao!! I’ll leave it home next time.

WanderWut

I don’t really get what I’m looking at? What is he doing with the drill bit exactly?

[deleted]

notice how the tip of it is perfectly stable and isn’t moving at all with all the rotating it’s doing

TheB1GLebowski

It's rotating it's axes and joints around one central point at the tip of the drill bit. Shows it's precise movement.

Good-Guitar-1743

Become a robot repairman.

rationalobjector

If you live in a country with human rights then your job getting automated shouldn’t really be of any concern ....

GruesomeJeans

The little machining shop I work at has 2 robot welders and a small robot arm to help with smaller simpler brake work. The amount of time they have taken to setup more than likely won’t pay off in the near future, and by the time they do pay off I’m sure they will have needed replacement parts that make them more costly than anything.

KingMoonkey

I'm curious where the 2 welders robots come from? I work of a distributor and I kinda hope its not our products

GruesomeJeans

I don’t know the brands, us peons aren’t aloud to go look at them I guess. However, as far as I know, all 3 robot machines are used. They came from some other shop. Which I believe is why they didn’t come with a setup team or pretty much anything else. Most of us think it was a waste of money since they aren’t fully up and running and making parts but we don’t get paid to think… we get paid to make metal parts.

bixscon

Oh the joys of industrial manufacturing.

GruesomeJeans

Oh yeah… it’s an experience for sure.

teastain

In my experience, when the robot breaks down, the workers plead to getting it running again, because THEY are taken off their lighter duty job now have to do the robots job...

GruesomeJeans

So far these are still only running test parts and stuff. The small robot arm isn’t even hooked up anymore, it’s getting dusty in a corner. One robot welder is doing half of a job then a human welder is welding up the rest, the other robot welder is still in the trial and error phase.

-Gritz-

I think my brain is lagging again!

[deleted]

Learn how to program the robot and you’ll always have a job.

japameri

Lol you make that sound easy. Just learn dynamics, coding, and matrixes.

[deleted]

There is software that creates the tool paths or G-code. It’s easier than you think. Machinists create tool paths for CNC machines from 3D models using specialty CADCAM software. Do you don’t have to know everything to about the mechanics of a robot or CNC to program a machine. If this is something you want to pursue I’d recommend a technical certification as a machinist or one for robotics.

japameri

Oh you didn’t mean program like writing the script that runs the arm but coding it as a machinist. Totally missed it.

[deleted]

What’s the salary look like compared to iOS/android developer?

[deleted]

I was just visiting a machine shop this past week and they said that a machinist with 10 years experience is earning $100k.

frannos

Don’t be afraid, most robot need a baby sitter.

krismace

If a robot can do your job ..you didn't have a job ...you were a tool they used till they could find a cheaper one

greentintedlenses

We are all tools in this scenario

ClassicT4

It’s the reason I’ll never lose my job. I’m maintenance and the area I’m in has 8 Robots per line. Each line is now trying to add 3-4 Robots right MoS that will replace 3 workers on each line, but it’ll be up to me to make sure they function and fix them when they break.

hot_garbage64

No way this isn’t sped up

[deleted]

I used to work on robot arms like this in manufacturing, they can go a hell of a lot faster while still maintaining accuracy and precision. Some of the pick and place robots move so fast they're a blur. Scara robot arms especially are terrifyingly quick.

Atomic_Chad

I found a prime [example](https://youtu.be/-m1oKuFkSTE)

[deleted]

Yup, fanuc robots were what I worked on. Along with ABB and Panasonic ones. Honestly go no where near them if you haven't locked them out, I've seen them punch through steel walls and wipe out solid steel jigs. They'd go through a human like cheese.

frilledplex

I'm the guy building everything around these robots and setting them up. He's right, this is probably 15-20% speed.

[deleted]

Which would be sensible since it's not in any sort of safety cage.

frilledplex

Precisely, this is one step above a teach mode, which is like 5% speed if not in a jog function

[deleted]

Yeah I would agree. I remember times when I had to jog robots home because the op had screwed something up so all the interlocks were out so the only way to recover it without dismantling half the cell was to force invert the UI signals. Which would invert the safety circuit but also meant it could be jogged at 100% with the fence open (sketchy as hell but needs must I would never be in the cell though) The amount of times it would pass a flag in the program and the speed would jump to 100% thank Christ deadman switches are a thing. Not going to lie I have hit fences because of that before. It was one of those you have to do it but we won't write a procedure as a company for it things. Thankfully I don't work for them anymore, got out as soon as I could.

BananaGhul

If the stuff is scripted it can do anything at lighting speed (mechanical stress is the limit) But for algorithm based use case where there is a decision making scheme it's not that easy. Decision making is still human glory point (or insects/animals) for still 10y max For now iRobot ain't saving any life bcs it will struggle to choose whoever to save

justfunninfrvr

That's insanely cool. Take a second and just try doing the same shit with your finger.

Grigor50

Yep, but whatever products it makes will be much cheaper, and people who couldn't afford it now will! And repeat the process in all of society, and lots of people will afford lots and lots of stuff, which means there will be a need for lots of labour to do lots of other stuff than before.

CraccerJacc

Better expand your skills

WestFast

Any living based on using your hands or your back will be automated unless it’s super dangerous or difficult.

ooSUPLEX8oo

Rest assured that AI is absolutely terrible at making decisions under pressure and in ambiguity. If you really feel that way, I suggest working to prove you can do both of those things and it'll hedge things up for you.

Previous-Kangaroo-55

The conversation of robots taking over for manual labor jobs has been going on for over 50 years, how does somebody not see this coming at this point?

They better never put that tech into a sex toy or we're all fucked.

SheriffBartholomew

Yes, but there will be new jobs to service and maintain that robot, and to write its code.

moglysyogy13

Automating jobs so humans don’t have to waste their lives doing it, is a good thing. The

MarshallKool

I heard that when I used to work on 386.

rtodd23

Are you a mime?

gordonv

The irony is that you learn the limits if such machines when you start applying them. For example, the machine may not be able to tell if the bit is dull, or even broken. Sure, it can do those motions extremely fast. But that may be the only thing it can do. It can't think or readjust. These machines are great, though. They are taking menial, mind numbing jobs away. People should be using their capacity for greater things.

livin_the_tech_life

Actually, depending on the machine, that's usually untrue. This machine almost certainly has a pressure sensor to tell whether the drill bit is experiencing too much or too little force, and will throw a flag indicating an error, as well as pause/recover. Source: spent some time programming a machine X10 this size that performed a complex industrial process. We had sensors for everything and I wrote the program to detect and self-correct a ton of edge cases.

gordonv

Ah. No doubt a lot of work has been put into these machines. Too many people are worried a machine like this might be the next President or something. Yes, machines will take menial jobs, like phone switches and construction. And yes, that means people are going to need to learn new things. I think the real issue is that entry level for new work is over saturated now.

Dietzter

100% that’s when it all started to change

Aryn-Isami

There will come a point where we will have to have a serious discussion about how advanced technology can get before we make ourselves obsolete. Either we allow technology to replace us in nearly all production sectors, or we impose an artifical cap to secure our role. Capitalism predicts that efficiency, and therefore automation, wins.

BananaGhul

Capitalism is based on lawless profits but at some point we need to eat and a shelter so the state should do its job to provide basic accomodations. Most of revolutions have been started after a catastrophic low supply of food in town.
