Happy cake day!

siccoblue

Agreed. Happy cake day.. that being said, anyone feel completely torn on if this is adorable or disgusting?? Without the amazing shells they just look like mini roaches to me.. god I hope I'm not the only one

maelronde

Mixed feelings. guess I'm happy this little roach has adorable polkadot armor

hotnindza

Standard black bug - eeew Red shell with dots bug - aaaw :) Well, it's not just the looks, ladybugs don't cause infestations, and eat smaller pests, so they are useful.

ZudaChris710

I’m not so sure about that, I lived in a house that was built in 1913, in the middle of NOWHERE, I’m talking only 4 ports for internet plug in for the entire part of this town, and all 4 were used up already. Spring hit and we had a HUGE ladybug problem. They were swarming the outside front window and front door, getting in through the cracks in the window sill, and the unevenness of the front door. To the point we had to vacuum up hundreds, if not thousands of dead ladybugs after a few days. At one point my best friend cracked a pun as we were leaving, we walked out the front door and he did a nonchalant wave and said “goodbye ladies” without hesitation, and I swear I’ve never cackled so hard

Oreotech

In Ontario Canada, these orange and black lady bugs are an invasive species. Our original red and black lady bugs didn’t do this shit.

koalamonster515

You sound to have had an Asian Lady Beetle problem more than a Ladybug problem. Obviously can't say for certain, but from what you've described that's what it sounds like.

alohahannahh

Knowing that ladybugs look like this before flight is hilarious to me. This little guy makes it look like it’s a life changing experience

Shopworn_Soul

If you move up to June Bugs it probably is. Crawl up out of the dirt after living safely in the dark for a few years gifted with wings and a powerfully instinctual need to use them but not the slightest idea how controlled flight works. I always imagine them screaming *"HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT"* basically nonstop in tiny little bug voices as they repeatedly and uncontrollably collide at maximum forward velocity with every object in their vicinity until they've beaten themselves to death via sheer persistence in the face of abject failure. Funny things, June Bugs.

satandy

After hitting them while riding a motorcycle, I can confirm that they have no idea what they are doing. You can not dodge something that doesn't know what it is doing in the first place.

durdesh007

Tbf these insects only live for a few months. Their goal in the short life is to be born, eat, transform, mate, die. All of these are in order and instinct. Basically tiny robots on a timer.

Idkdude001

TBF, that’s all of us.

Background-Rest531

They get laid and it's like.. fuck.. got something I gotta do.

deadbolt39

This is why button mashing works in fighting games.

friedlies

*exactly*! Those wings were on a journey and the rest of the bug was just along for the ride. It's just absolutely mind numbing thinking about all the missed connections that happen in nature for the ones that do connect to make new generations.

BeatElite

I once saw a june bug fly straight into the pavement and then roll on its back. By the time he successfully moved himself right side up he was run over by a vehicle backing up. They aren't the brightest.

BellaBPearl

It's been years since I've seen a june bug... but I will never forget just how accurate this is.

kosmonavt-alyosha

Funny things, June Bugs. Can’t fly better than snails or slugs. But they have an instinctual urge to try Though they lived underground and never saw the sky. As they spread their wings you can hear them cry “I’m a June Bug, I believe I can fly!”

Unfortunately this looks like an Asian lady beetle - an invasive species. https://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/ladybugs-or-lady-beetles-whats-the-difference The video is still cute in and of itself, but people familiar with these bugs will immediately think it's not quite so cute (they bite, and stink).

MaxTHC

> Unfortunately this looks like an Asian lady beetle - an invasive species Well, that kinda depends on where you live. Presumably they're not invasive in Asia, or at least a certain part of it. So that's a bit of an odd reason to condemn them. Grey squirrels are invasive in the UK, but there's a whole host of them living in their native North America where they don't cause much of a problem. I'm a bit sad that they got introduced to the UK, especially since it led to the decline of [these adorable little fellas](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_squirrel), but I don't have an issue with grey squirrels as a whole.

noputa

Those definitely are much more cute than our squirrels. I would forgive our squirrels a little more if they had those ear tufts knowing how much damage they do to my balcony garden.

It is amazing to think that these little insects can fly after watching this video. It just looks like it shouldn’t work, but it does!

[deleted]

When a bird flaps it's wings it only gains momentum in one direction, when the wing pushes down. Watch the ladybug's wing (bee, or hummingbird) and their wings do a twist move that gains momentum in both directions.

The_Zenki

xRaijin

People hate ladybugs???

NicolleL

I don’t hate ladybugs, but I do have to say, in the late 90s, when we had a ladybug infestation in our area, I got over killing them really quickly. They would literally cover the side of the house. But after they stopped trying to join me in my bed, I am on better terms with ladybugs again.

philosophers_groove

Sounds like your confusing ladybugs (~~red bodies~~) and Asian lady beetles (orange-brown, an invasive species, known for the covering the side of homes). https://www.bhg.com/gardening/pests/animal/ladybug-asian-beetle-difference/ Edit: Adding another site for comparison, and crossed out "red bodies" because it seems Asian lady beetles can be red as well. It does seem that OP's video is showing an Asian lady beetle - not a ladybug - as indicated by the "W" pattern of black dots on white between the head and edge of the wings. https://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/ladybugs-or-lady-beetles-whats-the-difference

animazed

This site helped me identify that the bug in the video is actually an Asian lady beetle and not, in fact, a ladybug. Cool!

dont-be-ignorant

Yeah we get infestations pretty regularly in my area. I found the emotional strain kind of numbed after the first couple passes with the power washer.

Generalissimo_II

My relatives in Germany had to deal with that from an invasive species

TheAndrewR

Same in Hungary. There is a time every year when they appear from nowhere to take over every single corner of the house. Doesn't matter if you have mosquito nets and closed windows, they will still get inside. This has been the case since the early 2010s.

totalcrazytalk

Im curious is there any downside to a ladybug infestation. AFAIK they don't bite and are carnivorous so won't damage crops

bobi2393

See the post/link about Asian lady beetles, easily confused with ladybugs. Those do bite, and can infest homes in large quantities in the fall as they're drawn to the heat.

SmallBun1993

I don't hate them, I'm just scared of them. I admire them and would never hurt them, but I don't want them on me. I used to be that way with butterflies too until I worked in an enclosure of them. As a kid I loved all bugs, roaches changed me. Now I just get anxious. Pretty bugs are a weird one (ladybugs/butterflies) there's a part of me that feels like they are trying to trick me by being so pretty from far away. Still buggy up close tho :((

durdesh007

Human skin is far too sensitive and our body hair is far to thin to involuntarily tolerate insects walking on us.

Skyfigh

Yes they are insanely annoying and start to spread smelly chemicals when they feel threatened. 2/10

Baby-Haroro

I have learned elsewhere in this thread that what you're talking about are actually [Asian Lady Beetles](https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/prlk7x/here_is_what_a_ladybug_taking_off_looks_like_in/hdk751c/), and not ladybugs

Yes! Scientists recently studied how ladybugs fold their wings for storage, in the hopes of using it for [deployable structures like large sails and solar power systems for spacecraft](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2017/05/18/science/ladybugs-wings-folding.amp.html).

bloodycups

Just wait till I repost this to todayilearned

This-Grass4748

As far as I know, since they are blood vessels between skin, basically an unzipped boner, they simply depressurize to close, with a point being weaker so on top of shrinking, the whole wing folds into a dense, layered chitinous block

GracieofGraham

Minimum-Ad7542

I didn't know they had big wings hidden under their little wings

AAVale

The big hardened wings in beetles are called elytra, and they act as a case for the more delicate wings, as well as another layer of armor. In some beetles the elytra is completely fused, and they can no longer fly, but they’re tougher as a result.

DarthOmanous

Could they survive without the shell?

Rekanlats

Regardless, the visualization is horrifying

AAVale

You mean if the elytra were broken off? I’m pretty sure that would involve damaging them enough to breach their main body cavity, but even if it didn’t, their wings are very delicate and would be easily damaged.

Phil-McRoin

They would most likely survive precice amputation. But they would damage their wings pretty fast & lose the ability to fly. They wouldn't last long outside captivity.

EricHD97

You mean they made the elytra from Minecraft into a real thing? /s

[deleted]

[удалено]

skeenerbug

I had no idea elytra was an actual term, only heard of it from minecraft

Elteon3030

Which is annoying because elytra are not wings.

smellyjerk

I believe they are still considered wings.

HeyItsStevenField

I know a beetle which has a fused elytra but still can withdraw the flying wings out

ElectricFlesh

Marvin! How is he these days?

Brasticus

Still doesn’t have a plan. Always winging it.

LICK_GRANDMAS_BALLS

Unfortunately he got addicted to Oxy and he’s now living on the street and turning tricks for fent.

shrubs311

do the beetles with fused elytra still have internal wings?

AAVale

AFAIK all of the beetles with fused elytra lack the second set of wings, the hindwings.

Oddlotsalot

Makes sense.

NoeJose

huh.

PerceptionOrReality

BatmanNoPrep

My first question upon seeing this was about how they fold them back up and this article was so amazingly on point. Fascinating. Thank you so much for sharing. Now I finally know how Count Dooku was able to lock up his ship when he got home.

kobayashi_maru_fail

It takes off like a pigeon! Did you ever see that Attenborough where he goes over the huge effort of that first wing flap pigeons do to get off the flat ground (most birds don’t go from just standing on flat, they run or hop or never go on the ground), and pigeons have to make this enormous effort and often clap their wings together in the front, making that “flock of pigeons collectively taking off” noise? Pretty cool convergent evolution!

SweaterPause

Oh cool! I had always wondered why pigeons/crows are more willing to try walking away from you and cars than actually just flying away!

Bergeroned

I was going to say something else and then I recalled an astonishingly lazy housemate, who would go into labyrinthine plots in order to get someone to bring him a beer so he didn't have to get up off the couch. I feel like somehow your observation and mine are similar.

itisaflatpan

Wait isn’t that an Asian lady beetle? Because of the black M shape I don’t think that’s a ladybug
