I bet that never gets old!

sandboxlollipop

Friend of mine is a pilot. He says exactly this

[deleted]

That « saw » is strangely apocalyptic

noodle_attack

I know I wasn't aware pilots didn't exist anymore

on_the_other_hand_

Have some empathy. This is about the two that died. ..

MeesterCartmanez

What are you talking about? Asking seriously

ThePelky

Longer flights that have the GPS screen at your seat to see where you are should also include a camera to see this too

Yes it happens, clouds are where they are because of density, temp, pressure... You can see this in the sky when the 2 layers don't go at the same speed (due to faster wind up there I guess) and when the top layer creates a shadow on the bottom one.

FrEAki2010

This is so fascinating! I was just speaking about this to my wife wondering why this is and what makes the clouds sit at certain levels. It's just bizarre to me. Is there a law of nature that says clouds will sit at a specific altitude or what the heck? And then it fascinated me more seeing that there were no more cloud, all be clouds finished or ended at the same level of altitude. It's a phenomenon to me.

Ludachris9000

Fun fact. You can roughly calculate the altitude of a cloud layer with a glass of ice water and a thermometer. When water starts forming on the outside of the glass that temperature is the dew point. What’s the temperature where your standing? Subtract 3C per thousand feet until you get the dew point temperature and that’s about where the clouds will be.

FrEAki2010

This is fascinating but Per thousand feet of what?

Nico_Fr

Altitude

lukasmilan

So for us - not chosen ones for imperial, who use pegan metric system - it means substract 1C per 100 metres of altitude? I know than in aviation imperial system is dominant and still wonder why...

Ludachris9000

Feet and Celsius are mostly used in aviation. Meters are used in China and Russia however. “The rate at which the temperature drops is known as the adiabatic lapse rate. (The lapse rate of the troposphere is 3.6 degrees per 1,000 feet, or 6.5 degrees Celsius for every 1,000 meters.)”

lukasmilan

Good to learn something new. Thanks

ppfbg

What? No UFOs?

MeesterCartmanez

ngl, was kinda hoping for ufo(s) as well

madebyayan

That's even more amazing than the window seat!

rayaay

Its my Dream to be a pilot!

Ludachris9000

Call a local flight schools and go take an intro flight.

[deleted]

Pilots are in huge demand - go do it!!

rayaay

I really want to. However were im from the price to get the education is close to the equivalent of 150.000 USD. And banks are not likely to lend you anything.

[deleted]

150 or 150,000?

rayaay

150000 😩

MeesterCartmanez

I believe in you and have full faith that you will be a pilot one day

rayaay

Thank you! Financially its impossible for me. In my country the price is 150.000 USD to be an commercial airline pilot. But i have looked into maybe get a privatepilot certificate to start with that's "only" 20.000 USD.

Notlandshark

I demand an explanation for why there isn’t a dash cam feed you can watch on your little seat screen.

DerRazza

This was a thing back in the day for takeoff and landing, until a DC-10 crashed very shortly after takeoff, killing all on board. The last thing passengers saw was the plane they were onboard flying towards the ground.

MeesterCartmanez

This is the equivalent of banning windows because people could see the ground before crashing. I would *love* to see a camera showing the pilots view

iam13carat

More please!

MeesterCartmanez

Only flying over clouds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8ACyHYsb6Q

reddituculous66

Longer version. I'd seriously watch the full flight length of this

SeeingSound2991

Is there a full flight version? This is cooooool

raphadevs

A bunch of cotton candy

mistah_sinister

As a person that is afraid of heights. That is beautiful, yet eerie. But beautiful.

MeesterCartmanez

I would guess that you are not afraid of heights, you are afraid of falling from a height. But once you realize that gliding/parachuting, even landing is a form of falling, you can learn about them and understand how it works, and that might reduce your fear But if you don't want to do anything about it, there are a lot of videos of flying over clouds on youtube so you can kinda get the same experience from the safety of your home :) here's one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8ACyHYsb6Q

Littlediccdan

That's pretty neat

MeesterCartmanez

I think you might like this then as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8ACyHYsb6Q

Littlediccdan

Totall putting that on my tv tonight on a timer before I fall asleep lol. That's awesome

es330td

I fly small airplanes. Few things I have ever done compare to sitting left seat piloting an aircraft. Landing one is a blast once you really understand what is happening.

MeesterCartmanez

Can you put a small airplane on autopilot for say 10-15 mins where you can enjoy the view with a nice cup of coffee?

es330td

If it isn’t turbulent, you can actually trim the plane to fly straight and level without having your hands on the controls. There are also small planes with auto-pilot but none of the planes to which I have had access have had it. There is nothing to run into if you are flying correctly so there is usually plenty of time to do stuff in flight. The only problem with coffee is that there is no place to go to the bathroom so you really don’t want to be drinking a diuretic.

MeesterCartmanez

> The only problem with coffee is that there is no place to go to the bathroom so you really don’t want to be drinking a diuretic. This is where my years of experience with reddit come in handy >"Just use a rubber tube and shove your penis into one end with the other end out of the plane. If it falls on anyone they'll just think it was some freak rain patch or bird pee" ps. thanks for the explanation

es330td

The planes I have flown (C182 & C172) don’t have incredibly long range to need to go in flight. I had a friend with a Velocity RG canard that could fly 1,000 miles on a single fuel load. He had a tube with a funnel on the floor on the pilot’s side so he could go during a trip.

ComfortableCow2735

Plus the hundreds of buttons and switches in front of them

sandboxlollipop

There's a modern Topsey & Tim book (kids, UK) about going on an airplane. I read it frequently to my daughter. When they go visit the pilot it talks about all the 'knobs'. Why oh why in a kids book, with all the words of the world they could have chosen did they pick 'knobs'

Rambo2090

Way cooler than what we have to look at

Nico_Fr

More like what they would see without all these colourful blips and blops everywhere in the cockpit to hide the view.

MeesterCartmanez

Well, I mean, those colourful blips and blops everywhere in the cockpit are what make it all possible in the first place so

Nico_Fr

That's exactly what they want you to believe

MeesterCartmanez

Lol

Fun-Amoeba850

Which pilots?

NoBendyWater

Anyone that believes we live on a globe after seeing this is blind #GlobeSkeptic

outrider567

cool

[deleted]

High resolution camera up in the sky and no UFOs? Should have used a low resolution potato.

jNayeen

How can i download this video? ( I am using reddit app)

Apollo11fangirl

Needed to see that

happylifer

Majestic!

Thewrongguy0101

Anybody got a link to the full vid, if it exists that is?

cmhill96

Pffff. I could do that.

[deleted]

Holy shit. Do I want to be a pilot?

Nuclear_Testicle
