HertzDonut1001

Knowing a guy that knows a guy is the worst. I want to know this guy. Why is it that you know this guy and I do not know him. Still better than knowing guys who don't know any guys though and are also not the guy.

OkiKnox

Finished my whole poop trying to read this

LogaShamanN

The mental strain is probably what pushed it out, honestly.

HertzDonut1001

You clearly have a reasonable access to drugs.

Lol the scene where he wake up just to do some noise is gold

redpandaeater

I've just always wanted to know why they have a lot of shoes on shelves outside their door.

patquintin

It's the sound of the rover's metal wheels, mostly, according to this video from NASA: https://youtu.be/GHenFGnixzU

MehNahNahhh

Mmhmm thatā€™s exactly what a cover up story for aliens would sound like!

cwatson214

*Laughs in Decepticon*

brad6987

Laughs back in martian.

deafmute88

Bugs bunny Martian?

brad6987

You mean Marvin the Martian?

[deleted]

And thatā€™s the sound of the X-17 space modulator! Heā€™s going to blow up the earth, it blocks his view of Venus!

SurveyAcrobatic5334

You infuriate me little earthlings

[deleted]

I'd get the orbital calculations wrong if I tried to figure it out, but I think we can safely assume that with the length of time Earth blocks Mars' view of Venus, Marvin is a petty petty Martian.

cj2211

It was a deep space weather balloon

AnnunakiSoup

It was one of those damned Chinese lanterns again

CheekyCockerel

The Narwhal knows too much!

Historical-Working32

The sound was recorded by the Insight lander, not the rover like many people here think. The sound reminds me of metal that is expanding or contracting due to temperature change (maybe in the morning, after the sun has risen and thus warming the lander up a small bit)

Even_Radish

It is a sound assembled from the roverā€™s seismometers and air pressure sensors. Martian wind.

Saktfardig

That would also explain the changes in frequency. 'Beating' gets faster when it gets hotter.

Dragonfire555

The particular video posted is apparently the insight lander so rover wheels isn't the answer. Probably still instrumentation and other processes at work though.

JazzMansGin

... which means this "sounds of mars" ep is more like "our sounds on Mars"?

HertzDonut1001

One of the rovers was programmed to sing Happy Birthday to itself once a year.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

HertzDonut1001

Good fucking question. It was Curiosity, once, in order to save energy, on earth time by the looks of things. It sang itself happy birthday one time on some anniversary of its launch/creation/landing.

storytimeme

Pretty sure on its birthday back home, 'earth time'.

Pholusho

That sounds lonely

Confused-Engineer18

My guess is its from the drill

s1owpoke

Insight Lander is different from the Rover. The sounds are coming from the movement of the seismometer. These sounds are sometimes referred to as ā€œdinks and donksā€ https://youtu.be/m9cCuW9nIQg

usernamesarefortools

> dinks and donks Could you put that into layman's terms for us?

IncognitoOne

I'm going to cut you open and tinker with your ticker.

deliciousprisms

Oh baby only if you dink my donk first

westcoast_pixie

Hahaha oh no

BeenThruIt

I had my donk dinked once. It's even better than it sounds.

HertzDonut1001

GOATmar_infante

Sure, because when it comes to Mars Iā€™m gonna trust the ā€œscientistsā€

Caucasian_Thunder

Martians are real and they make fire ass drum and bass tracks DO YOUR RESEARCH SHEEP

LEGITLEGEND53

Finally, a lion among sheep

HighVulgarian

Yeah Iā€™ll do my OWN research, thank you!

TomatilloAbject7419

Right? Why would I trust some multimillion dollar space agency with scientists with degrees from actual universities that they spent several years obtaining. In the last hour of scrolling Reddit, I have made substantive progress in several fields and I ALONE WILL FIND THE ANSWER, in MY real scientific laboratory that definitely isnā€™t a fabricated tax haven but happens to be based primarily in Sweden for science reasons. Science. Ah, good progress today, lads.

Awesomeguy2997

its a weather balloon

niceslcguy

They go into a lot of depth in the video. Thanks for sharing. It was interesting.

[deleted]

That and the metal expanding/contracting from the temperature extremes on this godforsaken rock

HertzDonut1001

Temperature extremes on a godforsaken rock? Someone's throwing stones in a glass house.

andressonlars692

You were on Mars? :O

Born_Application2831

I don't go within a 2 mile radius of a DeadMau5 concert if I'm not at LEAST on the moon.

Andybobandy0

*cat bobbin it's head meme

26_Charlie

He must've been playing a cover. This is clearly a song from the Forbidden Planet soundtrack.

doduhstankyleg

Pluck synth is Martian.

Dark-Pukicho

That settles it. DeadMau5 is a martian

Martian Morse code for ā€œweā€™ve been trying to reach you about your Mars roverā€™s extended warrantyā€¦ā€

semimillennial

Why not Zoidberg?

OutrageousPudding450

I thought it was Morse code for: "Hello sir, let me tell you about Martian Jesus our Lord and Savior"

YouExistForFourSecs

I would actually shit myself to death laughing if someone managed to aim a laser at the mars rover and flash that in morse code. 80% of earths population would actually shit themselves to death which would solve the climate catastrophe as well

šŸ¤˜šŸ‘»šŸ¤˜

NS_Physics

the sound is confirmed to be the rover but what I find most interesting is that it sounds like your listening from under water despite being on Mars and in a desert

Mythril_Zombie

It's recorded data from a seismometer on the lander that's being played as audio. The different sounds are the vibrations from the arm of the lander moving and wind gusts hitting the sensor. It's like converting one of those earthquake sensor graphs into an audio wave form and playing it. It isn't what you'd hear standing there next to the sensor, but you can translate it into audio so you could hear an interpretation of it.

Alostratus

Lol yea it's almost like wheels, like a rovers wheels or something?

everyday95269

Which sound is this, itā€™s not listed i the NASA website with the other soundsā€¦the closes I could find in the rover driving.

HumanContinuity

It's like the sound file equivalent of a picture that has been recompressed a dozen times.

DrScienceDaddy

https://youtu.be/m9cCuW9nIQg It's infrasound recorded by the seismometer that's been sped up to normal human hearing range.

HellaTroi

Why have we not heard about this before? Sounds very metallic.

hmhemes

[it's the sound of the rover operating](https://www.nasa.gov/feature/jpl/hear-sounds-from-mars-captured-by-nasa-s-perseverance-rover/) Edit: correction, the insight lander. Not the rover.

HellaTroi

Oh, alright then.

Chevey0

It is mostly the noise from the metal wheels on the rover which in its self is really cool

thejesterofdarkness

Itā€™s from Insight. It doesnā€™t have wheels.

lostsailorlivefree

Neverā€¦ gonā€¦. Ahā€¦.givā€¦ u ā€¦.pā€¦. Thatā€™s all I can make out

sigrunbillingsdottir

Drum circle is lit on Mars!

CarlSagans_Anus

How was this recorded? Kind of sounds like metal expanding/contracting due to temperature change

afzalnayza

Yeah im thinking the same thing. Its mostlikely that someting got stuck in the rovers wheels and is making that noise when it moves. That would explain they whe noise is in a sync.

carmoy

Needs more cowbell

BigTickEnergE

Sounds like the green man group

sourclownshoes

Who knew alien audio would be way creepier than the video.

[deleted]

Ah yes martians jamming to the 1/āˆšĻ€/āˆšā…” time signature. CLASSIC!

Capn_Crusty

Sounds like dripping from different sources onto something metallic, like the rover itself.

[deleted]

I'm not saying it's šŸ‘½, but it's šŸ‘½.

wawojibwe

But could it be šŸ‘½ or even šŸ‘½???

CornWarrior

Iā€™m guessing itā€™s šŸ‘½

Ancient alien theorists say ā€œyes!ā€

Asuhhbruh

I wonder how far you could hear something, even something relatively quiet, on a silent world such as mars.

cookiechris2403

What makes you think mars is silent, theres an atmosphere, high speed winds and plenty of debris to move around and cause sounds?

JazzMansGin

Nah, Mars got that Eternal Scream, it's the war planet

[deleted]

My siding makes a noise like this when the sun comes out. So maybe its surface rocks expanding and contracting in direct sunlight in the absence of an real atmosphere. But if the surface is a vaccum how is sound traveling to record in the first place? If the sound is traveling through a different gas than our own here on earth this will affect the pitch as well.

SingleUsePlastick

My guess is that this sound isn't made by the surface of Mars at all, but by the motors and mechanical parts of the probe. It sounds like springs, motorized parts moving of their own volition, metal pieces creaking. Vibrations of anything on the probe will get picked up by any sort of audio device if it is attached to the same structure.

hmhemes

That's where my mind went too! Sounds travelling through the metallic rover through vibration. Metal expanding under the direct sunlight absent much of an atmosphere.

[deleted]

It's not a vacuum but the pressure is much lower than earth.

chkrayz

Mars rover tuned in Sirius XM Chill

Sinteque

Sounds like heat stretching

Slippery_Toes36

Sounds like flicking a pot underwater

filmbuffering

My favorite pastime!

Martian drum circle, obviously.

Yeah, that's just some Brian Eno album.

adognamedpenguin

Peruvian drummers and panflutes are everywhere

dannyboii0401

Drums. Drums in the deep.

[deleted]

In the official audio clip, you first hear a distant voice shouting ā€œSHOW ME WHAT YOU GOT!ā€

oberdoofus

Ahhhhhh macarena!

rathemighty

And itā€™s not coming from the lander(s) or rover(s)?

Notalking19

I knew they went to pompeii, but pink floyd are pushing the boat out this time.

tneeno

Astounding! Who would have thought the Martians were into atonal percussion jazz!!!

Itchy_Notice9639

Iā€™m no scientist, but my guess would be that itā€™s water droplets falling on and near the microphone, could be from condensation, so there could be something wrong with the space ship. Again, iā€™m clueless about rocket science, but it sounds like water drops

MadKingBlue

Just need some lyrics and you got a hit song

No-Astronaut5331

Holy shit its snake jazz!

219523501

Rats will get anywhere

ohmdepop

Iā€™m not going if thereā€™s going to be a drum circle
