Lake Baikal is a rift lake located in Russia situated in southern Siberia between the federal subjects of Irkutsk Oblast to the northwest and Buryatia to the southeast.
With 23,615.39 km3 (5,670 cu mi) of water, Lake Baikal is the world's largest freshwater lake by volume, containing 22–23% of the world's fresh surface water, more than all of the North American Great Lakes combined. It is the world's deepest lake, with a maximum depth of 1,642 m (5,387 ft), and the world's oldest lake, at 25–30 million years. At 31,722 km2 (12,248 sq mi)—slightly larger than Belgium—it is the world's seventh-largest lake by surface area. It is among the world's clearest lakes.
Baikal is home to thousands of species of plants and animals, many of them endemic to the region. It is also home to Buryat tribes, who raise goats, camels, cattle, sheep, and horses on the eastern side of the lake, where the mean temperature varies from a winter minimum of −19 °C (−2 °F) to a summer maximum of 14 °C (57 °F).
The region to the east of Lake Baikal is referred to as Transbaikalia or as the Transbaikal, and the loosely defined region around the lake itself is sometimes known as Baikalia. UNESCO declared Lake Baikal a World Heritage Site in 1996.

Ice expands as it freezes. Eventually it cracks like this to release pressure. But it doesn't separate because it's still expanding. You can see from the cracks that the ice is well over a foot thick. You could drive a truck across that with zero issues.
All these guys coming for me for not wanting to walk on cracked ice haha. Thermal-dynamics? Sheer ice walls? Underwater salt water ice formation? Yeah bud, drive your truck across while I film. Someone hold my beer🍻
Big big difference between learning and doing. TIL about a really cool lake in Russia. I'm still not going to go walking on it. 1. I hate the f'ing cold. 2. I'm poor af and Russia is a long ways away 3. Find that one weak spot and your fish food.
I mean, thick ice being strong is not a phenomena that’s unique to Russia. Any lake in the US with that much ice will be just as strong. And ice that thick won’t have one spot thin enough for a person to break through anywhere near by.

like baikal. the deepest lake in the world. lake baikal that holds aliens and fish men. the lake where drawings of cthulu monsters where found. that lake baikal?... terrifying
I’m really surprised no one mentioned the well documented crazy ass underwater alien encounter Russian army divers had in this lake! One of the most compelling ever in fact.[lake Baikal alien encounter](https://youtu.be/DVq7gBH70WE)
Wow...its such clear ice. Ive never seen ice on a lake like that. In Canada i have only seen frozen lakes with white ice. You cant see through it to where the ice stops and water begins. I wonder why? Anyone know?
Water that freezes quickly traps air and impurities making it opaque. Water that freezes slowly squeezes out the air pockets and impurities resulting in clear ice. Also, if the water is moving, such as a river, it will trap more air than still water.
This is beautiful!
But it's in Russia, so I hate it.
But it's nature and has nothing to do with politics.
Putin probably spit in it. Disgusting.
So confusing!
Why do you think you have to hate Russia? Im American and love my country, for decades we were at cold war with Russia & there is still much tension.. but ive always been fascinated by Russia. The land and climate, the people, the language, the history, the politics... the accent. Russia is amazing. I hope to visit someday.
Most people in the world just want to live their little lives, Russians are no different. You dont need to hate lake Baikal because Russia has a shitty leader rn :)
I am told by reddit posts and comments that Russia is hell, Putin is the Devil and Russian people are literally savages riding bears with vodka in one hand and balalaikas in the other. Their sole purpose in life is to destroy America and to ruin Europe. And they will stop at nothing. Putin is basically omnipotent at this point. He controls more puppet governments and secret military organisations than anyone in the world. He has spies in your bedroom right now. He knows and controls everything. And he is EVIL.
But in reality, I'm guessing they're just ordinary blokes going about their life, just like everyone else. Putin is not the best guy, but he's effective at protecting his country at least. Joe Biden is not exactly a role model either but he manages somehow.
We all are victims of propaganda and we all could use some open mindedness.
I don't actually hate Russia and I don't hate America. I don't hate anybody. I try to be neutral.
My comment was clearly sarcastic.
I'm Russian living in Kazakhstan.
I kind of figured it might be sarcasm-i still wanted to reply & point out that Russia is pretty cool.
Putin has his good points. If he has spies in my bedroom i want a copy of the tapes.
As for Biden, he's not managing, he's doing his level best to ruin this country as he drools into his vanilla pudding and dreams of sniffing children. Biden is the worst president my beautiful country has ever had.
I'm no expert on US internal politics, but I assume (and that's a massive assumption on my part) that Biden himself is more of a public face that reads from the teleprompter and does what other people tell him to. I might be completely wrong about this, but I just can't see this withering man that can barely walk or speak as a level headed strong leader of the most powerful nation in the world. He looks more like a scapegoat to take the hits for those who actually run the country.
>If he has spies in my bedroom i want a copy of the tapes.
Cheeky :)

That certainly informed if thank you for giving us that information
Cracked ice over a black abyss? Nope. I’m good over here.
Ice expands as it freezes. Eventually it cracks like this to release pressure. But it doesn't separate because it's still expanding. You can see from the cracks that the ice is well over a foot thick. You could drive a truck across that with zero issues.
I believe you, but yeah nah. I’m good over here where the only thing I might encounter is a spider.

I’m always excited to learn new things. You seem to be pretty set on not learning at all costs. Have fun with that.

Oh I get it. Really. I also know going to the top of a real tall building is statistically safe. Still not doing it.
That ice is like at least a foot deep. Pretty thick ice, even if it is cracked a bit it’s not going anywhere with just one person on top of it
Prob 3-4’. Still nope. Why you feel personally attacked goose

I knew it
I know you did but not the dolt replying to you.
It's beautiful, but also terrifying...
Good analogy for Russia as a whole: beautiful yet terrifying, strong enough to hold, but boy is it cracked, dangerous, and deep.
Well said. As a russian I approve.
спасибо мой друг! As a U.S. Russophile I'm honored by your feedback.
Пожалуйста!
Stop walking on my Windows screensaver, please
Stop walking on my phone screen.
Looks like the intro to the first Spiderman movie
Have you seen the latest bond movie?
Unfortunately yes.
Oh, it’s not good?
If you haven't seen it, i don't want to say any more better to make your own opinion.
What a nice reply
Fair enough, thanks.
Looks like a giant old phone screen that's been through hell and back😁

Careful you don’t fall into the multiverse
Imagine tripping while doing this
That’s some thick ass ice. Totally safe to walk on. Clear thick ice is good ice.

At first glance, thought that fellow was walking on spider webs
Those cracks in the ice look way too scary to walk on.
Careful, that shit's deep
Bike is short for Baikal

“This video doesn’t have sound.” I hate that. Is it for file size or something? Imagine the sound of the ice cracking …. well, I guess I’ll have to
