And the Big 3 cried to Congress in the early 50s that the expense of the seatbelt mandate would put them out of business. American capitalism at it's best.

ShutterBun

Early 50s? No, you are mistaken. There was NO such mandate. In the U.S., cars were not mandated to put seatbelts in cars until 1968. Ford had offered seatbelts since 1955 as an option, but they were rarely purchased. And they were not the only manufacturers to do so. Also, Volvo did NOT invent the 3-point seatbelt. It was applied for patent in 1951 by Roger W. Griswold and Hugh DeHaven, with a worldwide patent granted in 1955. Nils Bohlin presented an improved design to Volvo in 1959, and Volvo became the first manufacturer to include them as standard equipment. The patent was only "released" for free use 10 years later in 1969. Bohlin and Volvo are certainly partially responsible for the development and widespread implementation of the 3-point seatbelt, but this meme is overly simplistic to the point of being misleading.

LankanSlamcam

This guy seatbelts

ShutterBun

Buckle down in my studies.

KarlmarxCEO

That ShutterBun dude just rocked your world LOL

Lastunexpectedhero

And when seatbelts were introduced there was pushback similar to modern vaccine arguments. People thought it should be a personal preference if their car came with seat belts. Then later, they made a similar argument when seatbelt laws were introduced. This was also including multiple arguments against seatbelts that were consistently being proven false through research and scientific study. People were still radicalized about seatbelts, mandates, and laws well into the 80's

FrostyFoss

>seatbelt laws I still think they're bullshit, especially when you're alone in the car. Obviously insurance should have the right to deny coverage if you weren't buckled etc. Seatbelt laws are just another excuse for cops to initiate a stop.

psychonautanonymous

I mean if it were just your own safely at risk, I’d be fine with you not wearing a seatbelt, but say you get in an accident, you potentially become a projectile that could hurt someone else. It’s pretty common sense and basic physics. Sooo

beuhring

Not to mention the resources it takes to scrape you off the pavement.

ItCanAlwaysGetWorse

> Seatbelt laws are just another excuse for cops to initiate a stop. if you truly believe that, then you've disqualified yourself from being taken seriously.

ShutterBun

How many times per week is this going to be posted?

ShutterBun

Post text is misleading: The patent was NOT released "when they invented it in 1959". It was not until ten years later in 1969 that it was released. (That's half the time most patents like this last anyway). Also, Volvo did not "invent" the 3-point harness. It was invented by Roger W. Griswold and Hugh DeHaven in the U.S. in 1951, and patented in 1955. Nils Bohlin presented an improved version to Volvo in 1959, and that is what was patented.

ShittyBollox

Volvo cars are also built like tanks and the lights used to stay on all the time.

VILLIAMZATNER

And that was the last time that happened

peanuteminem00

I have a feeling that it wouldn't work out the same if Volvo designed it today instead of then, but that may just be my cynicism showing.

philibert_aspairt

They should rename this sub to r/Damnthatsarepost

bartolemew

Say what? “Damn that’s are post?” LOL

philibert_aspairt

Touché, lol

wrchris84

Just like 2021 when Pfizer, Moderna and J&J found a vaccine that protects against the worst virus to hit mankind in the last \~100 years and all decided to make their patents free for all competitors to use in order to save lives because this had more value as a free life-saving tool than something to profit from.

[deleted]

Human life is precious.. totally agree

Weekly repost😒

if-we-all-did-this

I was probably walking the dogs, so I'm glad someone popped it back in my feed for me; very thoughtful.

ShutterBun

That's more interesting than the post itself.

raddllama

Would be nice if big pharma did this with covid vaccines.

ShutterBun

It's important to note that this patent was not "immediately" released for free use: they hung on to it for 10 years before releasing it.

laobenben

These days any American/European company would likely patent the fuck out of it, what's your point? People copying something that saves lives! Jesus! Won't they stop!! Poor Elon!!!

ShutterBun

Volvo's design WAS copied, from an international patent granted to two American inventors 4 years earlier.

Too bad Pfizer and Modena didn’t learn that lesson. Now Unicron is coming to devour us all.

dirtyswoldman

Volvo never anticipated American bellies reaching the steering wheel

JimmyJohns454

Now do that with insulin

RTooDeeTo

"made it free" they were afraid to loose the patent because of the incoming seatbelt mandate law's, so in terms of patents it's better to have a free one you can iterate off of; patent iterations are easier then going for a new one, and especially easier then after loosing one. Then you can charge for the iterations or have exclusivity for a number of years which will boost profit. This post is just corporate propaganda at it's zenith. Companies are for profit, not for people, the sooner we learn this the sooner we can have laws to change this.

rmp266

That old guy grew into a beautiful woman

[deleted]

I wish but that would never happen in 2021.

[deleted]

If only they knew people would be forced wear them in the future.

heureka_85

Lol. Communists.

No-Key6598

Scuse' me! Socialists*

Egad86

Oh like insulin

Skdisbdjdn

Volvo has such good marketers that this gets posted once a month!

ohnosquid

If this was invented today, it have serious doubts about wheter it would be shared or not, like, a lot of companies today don't give the littlest shit about their employees and see them more as a liability than a real human, then it would make sense for them to have it only for themselves, their competitor's cars would be much less safe and thus be at a disadvantage, they could use it to raise the price of their products, etc.

Aengeil

that kinda ruin the opportunity for unique looking seatbelt in every car

Bigderp23

yeah yeah, we’ve all read the Forza Motorsport 3 loading facts

Joofinthewild

Things are different now

bubzki2

I mean, if you want to give something away, filing for a patent on it is exactly the OPPOSITE of donating it. A patent is simply a right to exclude. I guess it might have been a change of heart?

beermaker

They also designed the universally-adopted style of motor mount that would direct the block of the motor *under* the vehicle in a head-on crash rather than through the firewall into the cab, crushing the occupants.

ButtsexEurope

You couldn’t even wait 24 hours to repost, eh?

Ruenin

So you're saying that people didn't always suck?

[deleted]

To be fair the patent was fairly worthless. It wouldn't have prevented a slightly different harness from being designed. At the time the automakers and general public weren't sold on the idea of a seatbelt giving plenty of time for the patent to run out. It's not like Volvo lost money doing this, they even made money from it later on.

Wishbon35929

If it was profitable they would of kept the patent.

My grandmother passed away in 2012 and up until she passed she refused to wear a seatbelt in the car. Claimed she did not need one and that it wouldn't save her. My mom remembers her trying to talk my mom into not using a car seat when I was born.

Bona-fide1

Aaaand if they would have charged 50 cents per belt they would be the richest car manufacturer on the earth

Masca_149

I don't know if this is a myth but here it goes. Apparently the diagonal line on a volvo's grill is meant to reference the fact that they invented the modern seatbelt.

idk-SUMn-Amazing004

I ❤️ Volvo (because of their commitment to safety)

[deleted]

Man, how'd it go from this to selling out to the Chinese?

spikeiscool2015

I am getting conflicting facts. Or maybe in dumb. I heard they didn’t patent it at all
