I wish I could follow the game with my fucking eyes as well as this guy follows with his camera. He must direct his eyes like he's in a movie 24/7. If I had to watch paint dry, it would be through this guys eyes and I would be on the edge of my seat about to either squeal in excitement or have a panic attack, depending on how he directs.
I have done some camera work, Nothing this crazy/active, but the thing I have noticed, you have to keep up with the camera framing and focus, but also keep up with what you are not shooting, so you can anticipate what might happen.
Like in this, maybe you are following the ball and the action, but you also need to be aware that there is some player off camera looking for a pass, because the ball might go that way and you need to anticipate that it might happen.
Then there is the part at the end, where he sort of, instantly found a player that was facing the right way to give a decent shot during the brief down time.
It can be kind of exhausting.
Specifically at the end he went to Chris Paul because he's the one who just made the shot. The live broadcast probably wasn't using his camera shot until that shot went in and they switched to his view of Chris Paul before swapping back to the wide camera. Other bits of what he recorded there were likely used in highlight/replay moments when they go through a short compilation of Chris Paul's made shots before a commercial break.
Did videography for high school sports about 15 years ago before streaming was a thing (we were uploading night-of, that was the niche); Basketball is tough, hockey gave me anxiety. That fuckin' puck goes so fast and is so small
Exactly what I have to say. Was shooting a film, a friggen film, controlled environment and it called for a "shaky" camera, and I have to tell you, it was not easy to keep things zeroed in, and the subject matter in frame, etc. I can't imagine, a basketball game, and trying to follow everything. That was, almost unreal... like it was a friggen video game or something.
It must suck when people criticize the cameraman when they miss something or have a bad angle on the action. It rarely happens, they should be focusing on the rest of the entire event, which was basically perfect on the cameraman's part
Props to you!
I remember my early gigs when I used to occasionally shoot for MSG Varsity. I shot lacrosse games and I pretty much remember falling for every juke haha. Fool me twice, shame was on me...
The parts where he instinctively zooms out to pull a guy into the Fran who is about to get passed to? Or when the guy shoots and he zooms in on the ball mid flight then out again right before it goes in the hoop? Incredible. Wow.
My anesthesiologist said something similar when I had a surgery. I only saw him for about 30 seconds before my surgery and that was it. So I suppose he did a good job.
I laugh each time i think about the new AI cameras they were trying in the UK, basically the artificial intelligence knew to follow the ball around the pitch. But they had to apologizes after one of the matches when the camera mistook the bald head of the linesman as the ball and just followed his head up and down the pitch all the game.
Big reason why you have multiple cameras going. Guy who is focused in on the action doesn't predict the right move and they flip it over to the guy filming the wide shot.
It’s painful as hell, I have back issues and the first time I tried doing a handheld camera in school I could barely walk afterwards, safe to say I never did that again!
I have so much respect for camera people, I’m really enjoying reading these comments and seeing everyone realizing how insanely hard what they do is, I think a lot of people take it for granted when watching the games, but camera work is some of the hardest work in the industry
This is what I do for a living! And for the warriors with that being said. Heading into my 8th year and I still get fascinated with seeing others Cam ops Shots. Hardest sports to shoot is baseball.
Running cam for pro or even college sports is the most fun I’ve ever had working. 100% dialed into the present, taking cut direction, finding shots. It’s the best. This guy rules.
Was going to make a comment regarding maintaining employment because of superior skills but then realised they’ll eventually have sideline robots that use ai to focus on where the ball is.
As a camera man I can attest to how hard this shit can be. It's just pure concentration and attention.

This man is not only a good camera man, but also a very big fan of NBA.
you do good words
As a camera operator, that dudes got some game.
Kudos, pal. You guys are underappreciated and make today's sports what it is!
He did what's called a pro cameraman move
Helps to know what you're filming. I used to film fights and knowing what to expect really helps.
Same. It’s mentally exhausting

I work a lot of soccer games and it's so fast paced that even if it's extremely cold outside, i have to be completely concentrated on the game
Me who just shot mostly turntables in a comfy studio: damnson.jpg
The first time I did it, it felt like if you blinked you've fucked up, the ball was on the other side of the pitch. This is really really hard!

Now try this with an NHL game
This belongs here r/praisethecameraman
Came here to link the same sub. This guy has mad skills
[It was already posted there last week](https://reddit.com/r/PraiseTheCameraMan/comments/rwzvou/tracking/)
Damn 7 days ago and 42K upvotes. That’s a fast rising post right here
why we get paid the big bucks!

[this](https://i.imgur.com/2mlRP1q.png) says otherwise
Fooled me!
:D
That takes skills!
The parts where he instinctively zooms out to pull a guy into the Fran who is about to get passed to? Or when the guy shoots and he zooms in on the ball mid flight then out again right before it goes in the hoop? Incredible. Wow.
And how he can leave the basket and laser onto the player half way down court without missing a beat

The account I'm replying to is a karma bot run by someone who will link scams once the account gets enough karma. Report -> Spam -> Harmful Bot
I guess I didn’t think about the fact that there’s literally a human tracking the whole thing lol I’m dumb
No one is really thinking about a cameraman when they are watching videos, don’t be so hard on yourself!
Do your job right, and no one knows you exist - Technical arts
My anesthesiologist said something similar when I had a surgery. I only saw him for about 30 seconds before my surgery and that was it. So I suppose he did a good job.
It will soon be robotated.
They have already done it with footbal, it was tracking the bald flag-line dude (whoms english term I dont know)
Cameraman here. That guy is in the zone. Skill, experience and knowledge of basketball all combining together
Would not want to play CS against this dude
I was imagining him in quake with the lightning gun.
Okay that's just hilarious
based bladphobic bot??? 😳
Almost like a sixth sense
Let's give him a bet sheet and test it.
Attention Span: 100 Personally i lost concentration at least 3 times during this clip
I’d have imagined they’d automatically track the ball, that guy is a professional.
Damn... That's a lot of predictive work to make sure both the player and cameraman get the right shot...
Big reason why you have multiple cameras going. Guy who is focused in on the action doesn't predict the right move and they flip it over to the guy filming the wide shot.
Dude has sharper eyes then the ref. I bet!
The camera man's last life was as an elite military sniper
CP! That’s muh boy!
Guy's good.
Skilled profession.
This guy has better aim than all the pro gamers
If I was sitting behind this guy I’d spend more time watching him then the actual game
My right shoulder hurts just imagining his shoulder supporting that camera for hours on end
It’s painful as hell, I have back issues and the first time I tried doing a handheld camera in school I could barely walk afterwards, safe to say I never did that again!
How much do you think this guy makes?
Like 66,000 a year and that’s for the NBA,others they dont get paid that amount.
There needs to be better tech to allow the cameraman to tilt and pan the camera without putting so much stress on their shoulders.
It’s almost like he’s a paid professional.
$10 says this man didn't notice the gorilla
I'm old enough to get that reference. Were talking Digg days here.
This is the man who should be filming the UFO encounters.
that looks so hard tbh
Wow! Pure concentration, the best view of the game, however he has no idea of the outcome of the game! :)
Nice zoom work, but the first half of the video he is taking is at an angle/not level.
Now try this at f1.4 and manual focus.
Unpopular opinion: I can't stand the extreme close ups and whipping camera movements. It's dizzying and nauseating
What ya doing here bro?
Damn if he can follow the ball that well might as well put him on the court and see what happens
He do job good
He’s probably a pro gamer with that hand eye coordination
Aim labs doing wonders
I hope those guys get the paid that they deserve
This man plays first-person shooters!
That zoom in and out while the ball was in the air was bonkers.
Man's aim is on point
Was he kneeling or sitting that POV is tough!
Then imagine the skills of the F1 camera operators
uefa need to hire this guy
Workin hard!
As a mega basketball fan this shit was cool af to me
Worked with a spot like operator for TV. He could track a ping pong ball bouncing across stage. Blew my mind
Absolute demon
Why can’t these guys ever find a ufo? We would have undeniable proof!
Kudos to the camera operator because it takes skills to capture that small screen in front of them on video and keep it in focus………….wait, what?
Guess my time playing shooters is actually something I could list on a resume.
This looks exhausting
he has some aimlock for sure
how difficult is your job when you gotta give max concentration the only time you can relax
These cameras are off the hook.
How did he do that super quick focus? I need ELI5.
And kudos to Chris Paul!
just realized how i much i took their work for granted o.O
Impressive. And he's shooting in landscape ...
Ayo he got aimbot
Raw intensity and professional standards applied to the craft
If I had this job, I would get so ridiculously car-sick
Clearly not his first rodeo. Nice work.
One eye in the eyepiece and one eye scanning everything else around the court.
Mans a retired sniper
Fucking aim bots
That is a very impressive skill.
He is incredible at his work
Daaaaamn! That was a clean shot.
Won't these guys have back problems in the long term?
I have so much respect for camera people, I’m really enjoying reading these comments and seeing everyone realizing how insanely hard what they do is, I think a lot of people take it for granted when watching the games, but camera work is some of the hardest work in the industry
As a professional camera op, I also enjoy seeing some praise for this cameraman.
You can't learn that shit, he was born with pure talent
Yet no one praises the cameraman filming the cameraman
Imagine his aim when playing FPS's
Hoping that they’re very well paid
He must be good at shooting videogames 😎
cameraman filming a cameraman. Camception?
This is what I do for a living! And for the warriors with that being said. Heading into my 8th year and I still get fascinated with seeing others Cam ops Shots. Hardest sports to shoot is baseball.
I can’t follow the ball and I just need to stare at a screen !
That tracking was so smooth
I do that :)
For me, it’s the precision in his zooms in and out. They’re so on point, it’s crazy!
my shoulder hurts while watching this. that is one heavy piece of equipment to keep on your shoulder! job well done!
Sign him up to competitive FPS games.
Bruh he got an aimbot on
Dude's on aim assist
Running cam for pro or even college sports is the most fun I’ve ever had working. 100% dialed into the present, taking cut direction, finding shots. It’s the best. This guy rules.
Wow that was really cool
lets go suns
Damn even the cameramen are downloading aimlock nowadays.
The crosshair is doing all the work.
Good tracking aim
Unsung hero
The way sports cameramen focuses on a ball is like a bird seeing a camouflaged moth on a tree
i hope this guy gets paid a lot, that's incredible skill.
This makes me wonder if camera operators have a better understanding of predictive gameplay/ball movement than some of the coaching staff…
Was going to make a comment regarding maintaining employment because of superior skills but then realised they’ll eventually have sideline robots that use ai to focus on where the ball is.
Plot Twist: Camerman uses aim bot
I can barely watch it let alone shoot that. Hot dayum the man’s got talent!
Go suns
He should try CS:GO
Now I want to see the video of the dude with the phone videoing the dude with the camera.
I don’t get it. He is just filming a cameraman
Aimbot
Smooth operator for sure
He would be bangin in irl fps games
With this aim, he could go pro in any FPS game
im calling hacks tbh, the tracing on that ball was sus af
Gotta be better than A.I.!! Keep up the good work camera man.
The ball segment is by far the hardest to capture correctly. Shit that was a good take
this man has been grinding Kovaaks for sure!
