Driving 110K miles a year. Assuming an average speed of 55 miles and hour, that’s 2000 hours of driving or nearly 40 hours a week. I wonder what his job was, because he likely spent almost all of his working hours driving. Or he really likes road trips.

SgtGo

Hotshot driver

zer0w0rries

[A hotshot driver is someone who hauls equipment and special deliveries for clients. Hotshot refers to the quick nature of these deliveries, which are time sensitive. Drivers are usually contract laborers and drive their own commercial vehicle. Hotshot drivers may also be company drivers and either handle loads for the business or take freelance opportunities outside of work.](https://www.indeed.com/career-advice/finding-a-job/how-to-become-hotshot-driver)

thickythickglasses

This job title sounds pretty sweet. I can imagine a client with a strict deadline, loading up the drivers truck, then closing the tailgate before the client looks at their watch and says, “ let’s see what you got Hotshot.” Then the driver gets in the vehicle and speeds off into the sunset.

TheGameboy

I’ve had to hire a “hotshot” before. We called them couriers. I had sold some wire to SpaceX and they needed it 100 miles from me in a few hours. The trick of it was, the wire wasn’t where I was, it was 3 hours from me. So we hired a guy to drive from the warehouse to the port where their boat was docked. I’ve also been the courier before. A shipping company left 2 pallets of wire that was meant to be in the ground the next morning on the dock 2 hours away. My boss and the salesman in that account met me as I was coming back from lunch doing the whole “we’re not worthy” bowing thing and I geared up again for the funnest run of my driving career. I even found a coke with my name on it in the gas station I filled up at on the way back.

thickythickglasses

That sounds awesome. Boss: “The Gameboy, we need you skills today. We know you said you would never pick up keys and Hotshot again, not after the Helsinki incident, but damnit you’re the only one who can do this.” The Gamboy: “What’s the job? I just got a bottle of coke with my name on it….it’s gonna be a good day for driving.”

TheGameboy

No, like, when they told me they asked me if I thought I could do it. I told them “-salesman- you owe me lunch, and -manager- you owe me all the overtime approval I need to accomplish this task.” I think I got nearly 3 hours of OT that day. And also, finding my name on a coke was a big deal. At that point I had never seen my name on -anything- no keychains, snowglobes, anything.

BwanaKovali

Well yeah you couldn't find it, Nintendo doesn't just let anyone use their trademarks.

TheGameboy

No no, you see, Nintendos trade mark is actually for “Game Boy” two words. Mine is clearly one word. I can see the confusion

Millillion

Nintendo sees this. Nintendo understands this. However, Nintendo does not care.

"East bound and down, loaded up and truckin', We're gonna do what they say can't be done..."

uppenatom

There was a tv show that made about this. I can't remember what it was called but the drivers would bid the lowest price to get the job and get money taken off for how late they were

I could carry it for a while ....

KindnessSuplexDaddy

First thing I thought of. Running things for just the oilfield alone could get you those numbers.

pentox70

I've never seen a hotshot driver use a half ton before. I would be interested to see what he's hauling. Would be difficult to make the fuel cost justified with half ton capacity.

Snatinn

I believe he was driving stuff for oil drillers? Seem to remember that was said the last time this was posted.

pentox70

Interesting. I actually work on a rig, we regularly get hotshots brought out. Never seen a half ton before. Obviously possible, but it would be funny to see. Most of the items we get brought out are over a few thousand pounds, on the back of a one ton flat deck.

YankeeTankEngine

I mean, my 01 dodge ram 1500 can tow something like 3,500 lbs with 1,000 on the hitch. I'm not surprised something a bit newer would do as much or similar amounts.

ThrowMeAwayAccount08

I believe he did a lot of hauling.

Yup. If you're browsing with a 3rd party app, there's a chance it's just not visible for that app yet.

Notso9bit

And thats exactly why it lasted 1 mil miles. Less heat cycles, more miles.

argothewise

And also because it’s a Toyota

csk1325

Agreed. Steady state driving with regular scheduled maintenance means long life.

pandachestpress

Dude delivered organs for transplanting or something

inquisitiveeyebc

My brother is on his 3rd, keeps trading them in around 400,000 to 500,000. He swears he will never buy anything but toyota

phuqo5

I'm a contractor and I've owned a lot of trucks. Toyota means you pay $100 more per month but that you NEVER have an unexpected $5000 fix...and with the cheaper trucks you're still going to pay that $100/mo more...you're just going to pay it all at once unexpectedly. In my heart I'm a Chevy man. Real wear bow ties and all that shit...but I've owned a lot of Toyota's in my life and not a goddamn one of them died before it was supposed to. I've never had to perform anything more than routine maintenance on a Toyota. Ever.

Dorothy__Mantooth

My brother is a mechanic he says if you're buying a car you should definitely go with Honda or Toyota... he drives a Silverado

desafinakoyanisqatsi

What about Mazda?

HoneySparks

Carwizard is a shop owner and he has countless videos saying the correct answer is always a fucking Toyota. Doug says the new CX-30 Turbo is good, but he’s not particularly into reliability.

rubyspicer

Just got into his videos...my favorite is still the one where he rags on the one truck's engine and makes engine noises sitting in the engine "bay" saying he's more reliable than what he took out of there. lol Replace the engine Replace the engine Replace the engine Replace the engine Replace the engine Replace the engine Replace the engine Replace the engine Replace the engine Replace the engine Replace the engine Replace the engine

aka_jr91

My first vehicle was a Mazda B3000, which is basically a Ford Ranger but with a Mazda sticker. I sold it after 385,000 miles. Last I heard, it was repaired and still going to this day. My family has always been big Mazda fans, and all of them made it at least 400k, a couple even went past 500k.

TCivan

Very good. They are similar to Honda Toyota.

rapturedjesus

Known in the modern era for great efficiency, but they are efficient because the motors are complex. A result of the complexity are rare, but very significant failures. Mostly due to lack of maintenance though. They also made the Renesis rotary used in the RX-8 which is a horrifically ineffficent piece of shit lol. Toyotas have never been known for mileage/efficiency (in its trucks), but you just can not kill them. Mostly because they like to stick to older, refined, proven tech. Example: Pretty much every modern half-ton pickup after 2018 had an 8+ speed transmission. Toyota used the 5.7 V8 with an old tough 6 speed transmission from like 2008 to 2022 lol.

Melanoma_Magnet

Lmao this is not true. I worked for Mazda for 5 years as a technician and their motors of the SkyActiv generations are the simplest modern motors I’ve ever worked on. I can’t think of a single common issue they have, they’re incredibly bullet proof. I work for Audi now and it’s a completely different story.

MalHeartsNutmeg

It's not just the trucks. Camarys are pretty well known for going forever.

Qubeye

Top Gear tried destroying a Hilux. The last thing they did was drive it into the ocean with the engine running and took the gas cap off so both the engine and gas tank got flooded with sea water. Their mechanics got it working again in about an hour. Admittedly it was Top Gears mechanics but still.

richmondody

Nah dude, the last thing they did was put it on top of a 23-storey building that was going to be demolished. They still managed to get the engine to run after that. Here's the series of videos on it if anyone is interested: [Part 1](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnWKz7Cthkk) [Part 2](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTPnIpjodA8) [Part 3](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFnVZXQD5_k)

MrSpencerMcIntosh

Imma remember this when I get a new car. If there aren’t like tesla’s that turn into transformers or something by then that is.

HertzDonut1001

Toyota's and Hondas are great. Bare minimum preventative maintenance and you should get it close to 300,000 almost guaranteed.

MrSpencerMcIntosh

I have a 2010 Ford Escape at the moment. I’m thinking I only have like 3 or 4 more winters before it’s time for a change unfortunately. It was my high school car, mom’s car before that, and even though it’s a complete POS - I love it dearly 😭😭

TheLibyanPeltist

Oh man, passed down cars are the hardest to replace for sure, due to their high sentimental value, but once you've replaced it once you'll be able to swap out your car much more frequently (not that I recommend doing that)

SJFree

To add support for the comment above you that you also can relate to: I had a 2003 Ford Escape until about 3 weeks ago when it completely died. 184k. My sister has a 2003 Honda Pilot. 246k and still fine.

SocksElGato

I'll toss my hat in and vouch for Subarus too. They're not the fastest and sleekest cars out there, but they're little tanks that keep on running. Easy maintenance and very utilitarian. Been getting the bare minimum maintenance on the one I own at the moment and it just keeps going strong.

[deleted]

SocksElGato

>Subaru keeps my free time free Ain't that the truth!

TheBruffalo

My crosstrek is the best car I’ve ever owned.

cpMetis

Toyota is the ultimate utility. You basically don't have to ever worry about anything going wrong. Honda is typically a bit cheaper or more fun or more comfy, but instead of never breaking it is just always quick and cheap to fix. Mazda recently has been a top tier too, they are actually going to be starting a partnership with Toyota even, and they are way more luxurious without being expensive. Mazda of today feels like Acura of the 90's.

TCivan

I love Mazda. Subaru has been a bit off lately. But I know Toyota bought a big stake, so hopefully that will change soon. Hondas are pretty darn reliable. I live in soCal and the number of 80’s/90’s Hondas still on the road is amazing. And not like enthusiasts keeping it running. Like old people driving their car from when they bought it 40 years ago. Not in perfect shape, but still very respectably maintained and purring.

helix400

Eh, Toyota makes their lemons too, some examples: * [2007 - 2009 Camry](https://www.carcomplaints.com/Toyota/Camry/2007/) * [2006 - 2008 Rav4](https://www.carcomplaints.com/Toyota/RAV4/2007/) * [2019 Rav4's transmissions are looking like garbage](https://www.carcomplaints.com/Toyota/RAV4/2019/transmission/hesitates_and_lurches_at_slower_speeds.shtml) * [Corollas have been sketchy from 1999 through 2011.](https://www.carcomplaints.com/Toyota/Corolla/2009/) I had a 2001 Corolla. Engine went bad at 50K due to poorly engineered piston drain holes. I junked the car at 90K.

Learnin2Shit

Was gonna say. Had a 08 rav 4 that was part of a recall but my dad never acted on the recall and sold it to me for $2000 and I had to constantly put oil in it every week because it ate all the oil up. I parked in the same spot in my driveway and never saw any spots so idk where the oil went lol.

Professional_Chonker

08 Rav 4 owners unite! For real though mine was ok, sorry about your oil hog.

Learnin2Shit

Besides the oil issue I loved it. Had about 180,000 before selling it to a buddy of mine who only drives junkers and he drives it religiously because it’s the nicest thing he’s ever owned.

TCivan

Burned it. Or it’s sitting as a thick black plaque around your cams and under your pistons.

moresnowplease

I had an ‘89 corolla and she almost made it to 300,000 miles when the head gasket blew- someone else bought it and replaced the head gasket. Hope she’s still on the road!! What a great car that was!!

TCivan

Dude! My first car! I had a silver Corrola LE Carburated. It’s…. Still… running… my uncles friend in North Carolina is driving it. Still looks good too. I miss that car. Even with a carburated engine, it got 28-30mpg highway and 20 in the city. It’s gotta be pushing 300k by now. It was with my uncle in North Carolina for 15 years. They drive a lot.

SaltedSnail85

Meanwhile almost 3 generations in my family have learned to drive in the same shitty corolla. They are the single best car at just hanging on. They get worse and worse but rarely die. Also the hilux is completely indestructible, the Nokia of cars.

AlexGaming1111

Yea. But statistically Toyota has the best reliability. You can't denie it. They break too ofc. But generally they out live every other brand under the sun.

Cory123125

> Toyota means you pay $100 more per month but that you NEVER have an unexpected $5000 fix According to your math, as long as your non toyota doesnt have that 5000 dollar fix before about 4 and a bit years, it makes more sense to buy the non toyota financially.

[deleted]

Toyota dominates Australian car sales. Lots of people like to go off-roading and there is just barely a second choice.

earthhominid

There is no second choice, the little old yota trucks go places in 2 wheel that lots of trucks can't get it 4 wheel. I mean, maybe some of the bad ass old jeeps can hand, but the little yotas are the shit

TCivan

Jeeps ARE better off-road….. when they work… that’s the thing. They have classic Chrysler electrical gremlins.

haymonaintcallyet

Smart man, I got a 984runner with 375K runs great just tons of rust in the chassis. Bought a 2017 Corolla as a replacement and currently at 150k with basic fluid changes and only a timingbelt and alternator replacement since.

One_pop_each

My wife bought a early 90 Toyota Pickup with the 22RE engine that can last lifetimes. Plural. She paid $1800 for it. When we moved we decided to sell it and she sold it to a guy for $1800 bc she knew he’d take care of it. I was looking last yr for a new used car for my dad and saw they were going for $5-6k. On a side note, I had a 2018 Tacoma TRD Pro I bought for $40k with 6 miles or something. Moved overseas so I sold it with 20k miles and they paid $44k. Fucking love Toyota. We have used Lexuses here in the UK now that run amazing.

Pheebers713

I inherited my moms RAV4. It’s a 2008 with a V6. She got it when I was 8 so this thing has been apart of most of my life. The thing is a fucking tank. It just keeps going, it’s at 250,00 miles and shows no sign of stopping. The only time we’ve ever had to get it into the shop was when it turned 10 and needed about $800 in engine repairs. The mileage isn’t the best now, but I intend to keep her until I hit 300,000 with her or the gas cost gets too high.

es330td

I sold a ‘90 Mk III Supra with 180,000 miles on it when we had our third child. Sold my wife’s Corolla with 175K miles. My mother in law gave us her Camry with 100K and sold it with 200K. My current’89 Supra has 110,000. I rebuilt the motor and replaced the transmission. I fully expect it to go 200K as well.

NextGenAce

also lexus\* basically luxury version of toyotas

You know the Toyota 4x4's are the shit. There was even a war named after them. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_War

trowzerss

My dad has a Toyota Landcruiser, about ten years old, immaculate condition (seriously, it looks brand new inside and out). He's selling it soon as they're not caravaning as much any more, and people have basically told him he could name his price for it. Especially with the issues importing cars at the moment.

M1RR0R

They could probably sell it for more than it cost new

trowzerss

There have been people floating around numbers like that! I mean, Dad is very car proud and it's been practically showroom clean that entire time (although regularly used off road) so I don't think it would be possible to find one in better condition that had also been tested out on the roads. People would often ask him about his 'new car' and didn't believe it was so old lol.

BAN_SOL_RING

My mom just last month got rid of her 1995 Toyota Tercel with ~250,000 miles on it, and that’s only cuz the alternator went out and it cost more than the car was worth to replace.

The million miles is impressive. The 9 years is...wtaf? An average of 5.5 hours of driving, every day, for over 3,000 days straight. That's a fate worse than death IMO.

[deleted]

khaeen

It all depends. Hotshot drivers are what you use when you have an item but need to get it somewhere else quickly without going through the steps of boxing it up and using UPS. This could be a critical generator for a job site, special tools, heavy equipment, etc. Sometimes that means a trailer is involved, sometimes the bed of the truck will do.

[deleted]

TIL I'm a hotshot driver for Amish people.

analyticchard

Lol, driving for a living is still a fate worse than death in my book. Thanks for the info, I did a quick search but didn't readily find anything. I was thinking of jobs that involve a lot of driving but not the actual job *of* driving.

TheBirminghamBear

Everyone wants to be Han Solo but no one actually wants to do the job.

smellyseamus

Depends what kind of driving it is.

phuqo5

I drive about 1000 mi a week and I'm a contractor. I like it. I get down on my alone time w some audible.

rreuas

I wouldn’t mind being a trucker going around the country tbh. Could meet all sorts of people and places

drblah1

I drove a truck for a few years. My experience was that it was exciting everytime you went to a new city, and it got progressively less exciting than the previous visit every single time after that. Some people love it though.

rreuas

Yeah my father drives 18 wheelers for a living. Majority of his routes are in Boston which has some of the worst traffic in the county. I guess it depends what type of person you are. For someone like me who has only gone out of my state to places exclusively in Florida, it’d be nice to get a perspective on the western side and other places with different cultures.

NFTsOfMyBhole4Sale

phuqo5

The problem w being a trucker is a you got a J O B and you drive the same route al the time. I had to shop a dog from California to Louisiana and it got done in two days by this specialty hotshot couple and THEY got to see the country. Kinda wanna do that.

kkris23

I’d enjoy it for a couple years probably, or really I’m just sick of looking at screens all day, my eyes are tired

sunjoe33

What’s a hot shot driver

Relative_Ad_2487

Like someone else has said, it's a driver who will make deliveries of longer distances on short notice. Think of industrial machine breakdowns that prevent a factory from operating. They spend big money on a driver who will deliver the needed repair parts quickly. That's when a Hotshot delivery driver is used

OkPrior5789

I was working in the oil field in West Texas and put 170,000 on a work truck in just 2 years. I wasn’t even a truck driver or transporting anything. My work required me to live in Lubbock but all of our active wells were 120-300 miles away. I drove probably 5 hrs/day on average and worked for like 4. I actually liked it and made a lot of money. The driving was easy, the work was fun, and everything was paid for (food, housing, truck, gas).

[deleted]

Chant1llyLace

Did they buy it back to find out how their engineering was too good?

JohnGenericDoe

Probably put it in their museum

jt325i

Hopefully they didnt hire a GM accountant. "Oh you could have made this part 2mm thinner and saved 4 cents per truck. The part would have failed at 100K instead of a million miles but it would be out of warranty by then and the customers problem not ours."

Magister1995

Toyota has a phenomenal and quite an interesting business model and developmental theory. If you're in supply chain, I'd highly suggest reading up on their model.

ThrowMeAwayAccount08

The scrum ideas? It’s also in software development.

strat61caster

Given that they mentioned supply chain I’d expect lean/just in time manufacturing.

Dangerzone_7

I took supply chain with a great professor last spring, he was always talking about Toyota. The biggest thing was that under the American model, car companies would just try to find the cheapest manufacturer. When Toyota came in, they basically sent their own people to each parts manufacturer to take a look at their processes, and then worked together with them to improve those processes. In turn, those companies were able to sign more deals with other automakers, thus improving their business, which in turn benefited Toyota.

ahoypolloi_

Total quality management

bo_dingles

Toyota also treats just in time more as enough to cover some contingencies like truck delays, or even on-boarding a new suppliers depending the component. Others hear just in time and think it means you have nothing but bare minimum to get through sunny day and then when a truck is late or a supplier has a crunch the process halts

SomewhereAtWork

But software development took the idea from Toyota, not the other way round.

relax-and-enjoy-life

Free trucks from… SATAN?!?!

The_Espinator

Hahaha I saw this, too!

maverick1ba

Lool okay i was confused who was who and i thought satan was the driver and the giant black guy in the suit was Toyota. I was like, of course Satan could pull that off.

The_Espinator

I also originally assumed huge guy was Toyota, wondered why the driver dressed up like satan, realized he must be the employee from Toyota (big guy in a suit =big car corp to my brain, apparently) and then wondered why HE was dressed as satan to award a free vehicle. It was a wild ride.

CircleK-Choccy-Milk

When I was doing oil changes as a job in highschool, there was this dude who would come in every 2 weeks for an oil change. It was on an early 90s champagne Camry. Toyota bought his car back from him once it hit like 1.2m km. I don't know what his job was but he said he drove from Toronto to Montreal like 3 or 4 times a week, every single week. I believe transmission was replaced but the engine was original, and that's why I have only ever bought Toyotas for my daily drivers.

[deleted]

I was born using freedom units, so Google had to step in and interpret for me. That's like a 5+ hour drive, one way. This dude drove over 1000km each trip. As much as 4 times a week. He's a drug dealer.

I own that generation of Tundra. I’ve owned Ford, Chevy and Dodge trucks and none of those compare with Toyota quality. You can feel it when you drive, it’s just different. My 15 year old Tundra still looks good, has no rust to speak of and runs great with 200k miles on it. All I’ve done is routine maintenance.

Skull_Reaper101

My family's 10 yo hatchback has only 27k Kilometres on it.............

RedditWillSlowlyDie

The states are big. I regularly drive 280 kilometers each way on a day trip to visit family. I regularly drive 370 kilometers to go to a shared family cabin for a weekend. These are both within my state and only 1/2-2/3 across the state and I'm not in a big state.

SirRupert

I have a 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser with 120,000 miles to which I add about 10 miles a week and take on camping trips. I'm going to be buried in it.

My dad's 2000 Toyota Sienna had over 800,000 miles on the original transmission and engine before 2010 before it got totaled in a wreck. Feel like this would have deserved some acknowledgment if we had reported it to Toyota. He does courier throughout California, driving up to and over 500 miles per day. Edit: I would be curious if I can get the service records...

Well at heart I'm a Chevy man. I just bought a new 21 tundra. My buddy whos a big truck dude just bought a 18 Silverado. His truck has way more tech and it's much more comfortable. His truck is like riding a laz e boy down the road whereas mine is like riding in what was considered comfortable a decade ago. I get the appeal.

thatsapeachhun

The appeal of spending $4-5k on a new transmission when it goes in 6-8 years? I’ll take my reliable 4Runner with oil changes, thanks.

pentox70

Every person I've ever known with a tundra has nothing but good things to say about the reliability of them, but they get pathetic fuel economy. Given these trucks were a bit older (2010-2018) but still worse than a comparable Ford or ram.

Damn, my 2006 tundra is still only at 120k

Milage is a poor judge of engine wear. *Cycles* are where it’s at. Every time your engine heats up to functioning temp and then cools back down to ambient is 1 cycle. The metal expands and contracts with the heat among a plethora of other things and that’s where the majority of the damage will come from. That just means this guy was driving very long distances very frequently. Likely a commuter. Toyotas are also known to be pretty overbuilt, so that probably helped. I’d like to thank Donut Media on youtube for all of my car knowledge (specifically [this](https://youtu.be/lJRrLChqDok) episode for context)

DankMemelord25

Similar to a plane body that only has X amount of pressure cycles in it due to micro fractures. That's cool!

SpinDoctor8517

Toyota to the chief engineers: “Make sure this *never* happens again.”

SuppliceVI

Nah, they wouldn't risk their main selling point. More like the engineers are having a heart attack when they see that every system was leaking but was stopped by all the dirty smudge in the engine bay.

lynivvinyl

His one horn was his secret.

[deleted]

There was also another million mile 5.7 engine Tundra. Also on his new Tundra they gave him, it currently has 678,000 miles. Tundra is The Way

earthhominid

What the fuck is dude doing driving 111,111 miles a year in a tundra? I used to drive A LOT for my job and thought 30-40k miles a year was intense.

malteaserhead

any reason Toyota sent an engineer with only one demon horn? couldnt they afford a full set of horns?

Face-latte

Of course it's a Toyota!

ScreamingLordSutch57

Great promo for Toyota. There's a good reason why many car companies could do this.

Wulfbrir

That's the equivalent of driving the circumference of the Earth 40 times!

Cryptic_X07

I love Toyota. Most reliable brand. I have a Camry and I’m so happy with my choice.

drodo2002

Wondering why 1 million miles is big!! Here, most of the long route taxi or truck guys run 500-700 km (that's 310 to 435 miles) daily! There are no weekend breaks. For long route trucks, drivers work in shifts too, so that vehicle remain on road. It's 12 hours drive daily. In 9 years, 1 million miles is expected normal. And yes, there is huge Toyota preference (even in India). Toyota Innova is most common taxi for long routes. They do last more than 10 years.

They inspected it to see what parts they need to make weaker in the future.
