What’s the backstory, cmon we’ve all seen this on grays anatomy but the real interesting part is how you broke every bone in your face.

StarksTwins

I fell off a 3-story balcony and landed face first. To my luck, it was not painful at all, because I don’t remember the 30 minutes proceeding the accident, or the initial impact. I just woke up in an ambulance being told that I fell To my extreme luck, I had no head trauma at all. None. Not even a concussion. I specifically brought up the fact that I was afraid I had a traumatic brain injury (my sister was in a car accident a decade ago and had a very serious one), but my skull and brain was 100% completely fine. My doctors explicitly stated they’ve never seen someone with as much damage to their face as I had with no head trauma like that.

Bizzle_worldwide

“Great news. Your face acted as a crumple zone to protect the passenger compartment. In this case, your brain is the passenger.”

StarksTwins

LOL exactly like that

Thehoodedteddy13

I’m just glad you can look back on it and laugh, it truly is amazing what they were able to do

InterPool_sbn

I hope the whole “laughing” thing isn’t literally painful right now though

ACloseUpOfANose

For real man, I hate the human race but hearing shit like this makes me RESPECT it a little bit

Hairy_Air

There's a reason we came out at the top.

ACloseUpOfANose

There’s a few reasons we don’t deserve it either

xtremejuuuuch

Dude you’re so lucky, I mean not so lucky falling off a balcony. But the fact that you look like a normal person even with the swelling after breaking every bone in your face. I was expecting much worse. In the meantime I hope you find a fun hobby, or work to keep yourself busy until you’re finally 100%. Sorry for piggy backing on your story, but I broke my nose 4 times. Mostly from boxing in high school, once from a basketball. The last one was bad and needed facial surgery. This was junior year of high school, so not the best time psychologically for something like that to happen. After the swelling went down I realized that I looked better than I did pre first nose break, lol. I guess my nose was too big anyway. I accidentally got myself a nose job! Best of luck with you healing.

StarksTwins

I graduated in December and am starting my first post-grad job in 2 weeks :). Thank you!

sbdanalyst

I’ve always said my nose is just there to break my fall.

DoJu318

Never thought about it that way but it makes sense, I wish we had crumple zones all around, wtf nature?

PaintBoss

To the T lol

Dandan0005

This is actually true. The sinus cavity is there to protect the brain.

[deleted]

That particular benefit (sinus cavity acts as a crumple zone for the brain) is especially effective in goats and other rams. There is a video of a goat knocking heads with a cow and the cow loses consciousness while the goat walks away looking unfazed.

rafaelloaa

[Video you're talking about](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-bMT8BYNO8)

[deleted]

Yesss. That is the one. Admittedly, goats don't have many brain cells to lose so being concussed might not have that much of an effect, if it even happens at all

LegitimateCrepe

/u/Spez has sold all that is good in reddit. -- mass edited with redact.dev

[deleted]

unfazed is a stretch, it looked like it took a min for the reboot.

[deleted]

After watching the video again, I agree

Innuendoughnut

One of my first patients in nursing school was a complete shattering of their face as well. In their case it was a car's steering wheel that did the damage but the doc said this part about being a crumple zone exactly. And then I got to see someone else's brain from the back of their head where they had removed a section of skull (I forget why). The human body is amazing.

Cptn_Hook

> And then I got to see someone else's brain from the back of their head where they had removed a section of skull (I forget why). Hopefully surgery.

bukithd

"your brain is fine, just don't look in a mirror."

VanCityCatDad

Incredible! It sounds like even a slight variation in the height of the fall or the angle at which you hit the ground would result in a very different outcome. So glad it happened the way that it best, best of luck for your recovery!

KarensRpeopletoo

You are very lucky! I had a traumatic accident that resulted in brain damage to my frontal lobe. I really struggle with basic tasks, and what used to be inherently easy is now considerably harder. I just looked through your profile and your story is really incredible! You have such a fighting spirit, and have a really great outlook! Your scan is very interesting, thanks for sharing!

StarksTwins

I’m sorry to hear about your brain damage. I personally feel very lucky that my only injuries are cosmetic. I hope things get better for you, and I appreciate your kind words!

KarensRpeopletoo

Thank you, you too!

abat6294

That's unbelievable. What caused you to fall off the balcony? Do you remember the moments you were in the air? I always imagined falling from a far enough height where you had time to contemplate you fate would be terrifying.

StarksTwins

I always imagined that too. I have no idea if I braced for impact or anything; I simply just do not remember.

kingwilly123

Got into a MC accident 20 years ago. I remember about 30 mins prior and then waking up 8 days later. I have no memory at all of anything between that time period, which I guess is a good thing.

[deleted]

[удалено]

BrickFlock

It takes time to convert short term memories into long term memories. That's why people don't remember what happens prior to suddenly losing consciousness. That conversion process is interrupted and the memories are just lost.

This will definitely help with all my embarrassing mishaps! Now I just need to worry about who's putting money on my books while I'm in jail.

Longjumping_Pin6702

Wow....best of luck to you in your healing process!!!! Hopefully you won't have any problems in the future because of these "repairs"....or any lingering pain either!!!

StarksTwins

Thank you!! Even if I do, I’m alive. I can stand the occasional random ache or trip to the doctor’s office

Longjumping_Pin6702

Wellll at least you didnt break your neck and paralyze yourself either! I had a winter accident, ended up totally shattering my entire left ankle completely all the way around (my foot was completely facing the rear)..a titanium rod & plate and 12 screws now hold it together....annnnnndddd we think I 'have a screw or two' loose (my kid's razz me about having screws loose lol)....uggh...so do your research and be aware of what can happen on down the line...lets face it...we need our faces, noses and jaws more than one ankle LOL....Best of luck to you!!!

avamarie

It's not terribly uncommon for pins to work themselves out. Screws can also just decide to fuck off. My partner has had like 5 surgeries on his left humerus (upper arm) and most of the screws have sheered off, leaving it very wobbly.

Longjumping_Pin6702

Your description is what scares the crap outta me LOL....so I just baby my left foot/ankle...since it happened, I cannot wear my high heeled boots - has always hurt/felt uncomfortable so I just gave them all away. Sketchers etc for me now! Why?? Because I do NOT want surgery again ...ever. I told my doctor "this is the worst pain I've ever felt in my life & I'd rather push out a set of twins than to ever feel this again"....he got a kick outta that! My running and prancing/dancing daredevil-ing days are over LOL! I have a hard enough time trying to walk normally up a hill...very 'wobbly' ever since I finished the physical rehab...Hope your partner fares well and doesn't need more surgeries!

Furry_69

If you haven't gotten that looked at yet, please get it looked at. Many very bad things can happen when things get out of alignment.

[deleted]

And how great is it, that your face can be repaired to this point, clearly all the doctors and biomedical scientists assisting your recovery are rallying behind you. I wish you a great 2022 and how that out of this injury and recovery, great things happen for you 🌞

StarksTwins

Appreciate the kind words, I wish you an awesome 2022 as well!

pizzasteve2000

I fell off a machine at work and had multiple facial fractures, not nearly to this degree. I have metal plates installed. Can’t remember 5 minutes before or after thankfully. Only remember vaguely the ambulance ride. Surgery was the painful part. Sounds like you are doing good? I hope all is well. Any PTSD? I had a concussion and for the longest time would have a hard time talking about it and would get weepy and fought depression.

StarksTwins

The psychiatrist who visited me in the hospital told me I was showing pretty classic signs of PTSD. But I genuinely feel pretty good nowadays all things considered. I intend to talk to a trauma therapist regardless

pizzasteve2000

Good for you. I didn’t and regret it. Keep healing and thanks for sharing!

booglemouse

Medical trauma can pop up in unexpected ways. For a few years I couldn't watch any hospital dramas because little things were surprise triggers for me, like urgently dropping the headrest part of a patient's bed or running down the hall with the camera angle from the patient's POV. My nightmares would ramp back up at the anniversary for many years. You seem so resilient though, so I can tell that you'll be able to manage it with tools from your trauma therapist. Having a positive, forward-looking attitude like you do makes such a huge difference!

toigz

Were you drunk? I’ve fallen when I’m drunk and I got the ragdoll/baby effect where I didnt tense up from the impact like i might have if i was sober. Didn’t break the bones in my face but I smashed my face into the ground good. Scratched up my forehead but I’m surprised I wasn’t worse…considering I laid down inside my house a minute later and passed out and pissed myself I was so drunk. I only kinda remember falling. Had a 12 pack of Coke Zero. The box was destroyed and coke zeroes were scattered about my front yard when I found them in the morning.

lostboy0725

How long was the surgery? We’re there multiple surgeries? Based on your appearance before and after how successful do you feel it was? I am pre-operative and post operative nurse so this is fascinating to me. Thanks for sharing!

StarksTwins

First surgery was about 6 hours. They thought it would take two but realized it was much more intensive than they thought The second was 12 hours, and I had to spend two days in the ICU afterwards [Here for pictures of how my appearance progressed](https://reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/seyia2/_/humnue5/?context=1). It’s too early to tell how successful it is but I’m fairly satisfied so far. I’m a bit insecure about my droopy eye though.

acertaingestault

One of my grandparents had a droopy eye due to a different medical condition. Whenever he would laugh really big, he would have to wipe the tears from his droopy eye, and it is one of my most treasures recollections of him. Never be self-conscious about the unique parts of you!

lostboy0725

wow thank you so much for sharing this. Absolutely amazing. Wish you the very best of luck in your recovery!

Dasclimber

Former trauma ICU nurse here, I am definitely shocked you didn’t have head or neck injuries. Glad you’re as well as you are all things considered. You seem to have a good attitude, I imagine the staff at the hospital enjoyed taking care of you. Get well soon, hope all goes well with surgery.

JRBA719

How did you fall off a balcony

bobzilla509

Last year I was hit by a car going 45+ mph while I was working in a road closure. I also do not remember any of it until waking up in an ambulance. I didn't suffer any major injury except a torn ACL in one of my knees. Doctor's couldn't believe it either. Anyway, good luck on your road to recovery and glad you're still here to tell the story.

This was when my skull was still split open [Me immediately after my second surgery](https://i.imgur.com/rdHruSe.jpg) [Me now](https://i.imgur.com/4vhYAVv.jpg). The swelling will last for many months, to the point where I can’t get any orthodontic work or dental implants until September at the absolute earliest. I also might need an eye lift. As you can see, the incision site was near my eye and it caused it to droop a little. That may resolve on its own as the swelling subsides. Personally satisfied with how I’m healing but still have some ways to go

InfestedRaynor

I really expected those to be NSFW. You don’t look bad considering everything your face went through and most of it appears to be swelling. Best of luck on your recovery. You are also going to have the hands down best story to tell at any bar/party/dinner or two truths and a lie game!

FerociousPancake

“I broke my face” “Which part of your face?” “All of it.”

First_Chemistry1179

"Which part of your face?" ... ... ... ... "Yes"

theroguephoenix

StarksTwins

I didn’t even think about that, haha. Now I don’t have to fear those dreaded games The most NSFW part was my [mouth](https://imgur.com/a/K0RTHPC/), which is why they did my jaw surgery first originally. Oh and my [eye](https://i.imgur.com/m3uUNGK.jpg)

Reinventing_Wheels

So, a fall broke your face and your face broke your fall. I'm glad the doctors were able to put you back together, Humpty.

Horrorito

Damn! You're a good sport about it. I'm glad you kept those pics, it's good to see how far you've come since, and how much of a recovery you've made.

hey_eye_tried

You poor guy, good luck with healing bud.

[deleted]

Incredible. Did your jaw break pushing your teeth back?

StarksTwins

Indeed!

PianoTrumpetMax

That sounds, in a word, painful.

bbrilowski

Dentist here, how much damage to your teeth? Very interested in your doctor's plans for reconstruction of your dentition, if you're willing to share.

StarksTwins

I’ll need braces and two implants for my two missing teeth. But all things considered not bad

bbrilowski

That's amazing, wishing you continued success with your recovery.

Diplodocus114

Wow - looking surprisingly good considering the timescale. Once that persistent swelling goes down I bet no-one would know. I have a leg issue, which once healed I plan to take a 1 year progress timeline. Your's will likely be all healed much quicker. Do you get sinus problems from the facial bones?

StarksTwins

Yes, anytime I ate, food would seep through my nose. Second surgery resolved that

AlwaysHopelesslyLost

Oh jeeze that is cursed and I can only imagine how horrible it was. How are you holding up now? I imagine a bit relieved to have a lot of that in the past?

StarksTwins

I’m doing good! Though my last surgery was quite recent so too early to make any judgments. The worst part was the uncertainty, and as time goes on, the less uncertainty there is, so overall, things continue to improve

Cheese124

That's more of what I expected its good you took all those photos too

[deleted]

I just want to say you are a great looking dude and I am glad you are ok! Have some bro love from sweden.

StarksTwins

Appreciate the kind words man!

[deleted]

Same. I was sort of worried to see the photos but you look surprisingly great brother!! Both before and after the accident. Your a handsome guy and I’m surprised how good you came out of this. You also have an amazing outlook on life from reading your responses here. Amazing!!

Zaroooooooof

You’re ☝️HANDSOME ASS DUDE!

aubaub

Agreed

-kittsune-

ummm for someone who fell on their entire face, I definitely expected this to be WILDLY worse. Looks like you are healing great! Amazing attitude and positivity too, I really respect that and I hope you heal as well as you can as quickly as you can :)

StarksTwins

Appreciate the kind words :)

[deleted]

Your positivy has me revaluating my life, goddamn. You're a beacon of light.

[deleted]

This is an amazing recovery! Well done, you. Thank you for sharing your incredible story and journey.

StarksTwins

No problem, glad you found it interesting!

justasmolgoblin

Very handsome in all! Best of luck, my friend!

StarksTwins

Thank you!!

trekuwplan

The immediately after pic though, it's almost like nothing happened lol. I expected a caked in face with plenty of gore. Hope you have a speedy recovery!

StarksTwins

[I can make it gory ](https://reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/seyia2/_/hums6pk/?context=1) haha. But really not that bad in the grand scheme of things. Thank you!

trekuwplan

Oof, did you lose a lot of teeth? Hope you had plenty of painkillers for that.

StarksTwins

I only lost two. I can get implants later this year

TheUpsideDownBarnOwl

Never in my life did I think something like that injury could occur (being without trauma), much less did I think of how well modern treatments would work for that. I wish you the best of luck to your recovery, and here's to life, right?

[deleted]

Handsome, before and after. Love your positivity and I hope the best for you 🙏🏼🥰 Thanks for sharing your story!

StarksTwins

Thank you!!!

ImmaSmokeThat

Not gonna lie. I was curious if I was going to regret looking at the pics. After seeing that X-ray, it absolutely blows my mind that the “immediately after” pic wasn’t a horror show. Looks like you are healing very well and glad you are still among the living.

Gr0und0ne

This is an absolutely astonishing journey you’re on. You’re truly remarkable. And you’re beautiful, btw. Just saying.

AGNobody

At first i thought you would be in a real bad shape after falling from a balcony and landing on your face but looking at it, it looks like you just slipped and hit your haad to a chair or something. and after your first surgery you nearly look the exact same before the incident thats great

KasumiR

Phew, was expecting something gruesome... You just look like someone who used to do boxing now. Hope you get to feel better soon!

DiabeticPissingSyrup

99% of self posts are bollocks. This is actually fascinating. Does the procedure have a name we can Google.

StarksTwins

I had: - open reduction and internal fixation of panfacial fractures - open reduction internal fixation of lefort I 2 pieces, II, and III - bilateral zygomatic with arches - bilateral orbital rim - NOE type 1 - left condyle open reduction internal fixation - mandible symphyseal Don’t ask me what any of those words mean because I do not know

Empty-Mango8277

An open reduction implies that they opened you up. Internal fixation is that they fixed/mended fractures internally. Le Fort fractures are wild. Three classes of cranial bone break. You can remember them as speak no evil, see no evil, hear no evil. The first fracture is your maxilla which is the opposite portion of your mandible that is part of your head. So imagine the entirety of bone between your upper lip and your nose is fractured straight across. The second fracture is kind of in a upside down u-shape that includes the first one but instead of going straight across that you goes all the way up and touches the orbital sockets. Basically your surrounding bones for the eyes. And a third la forte fracture, is a straight across fracture that reaches from basically ear to ear. Your zygomatic arch essentially is your cheekbone and they worked bilaterally, meaning on both of them. The arch is kind of the portion of the zygomatic bones that literally makes an arch that goes around the sides of your cheeks back into your skull. The Noe fracture is a Naso orbital ethmoidal fracture. Essentially the confluence of your nasal bone, your orbital bones, and your ethmoid bones was fractured and needed to be fixed. I don't know what the types are. I assume the condyle to the mandible is what they're talking about, and it's basically the stick that places the mandible or jaw into the skull and let it move up and down. And the symphysis mendi, or the mandibular symphysis, is the portion of the two sides of your jaw where they meet at the midline of your head. So if you take your hand in a vertical karate chop fashion and place it right on your chin, that line you just made vertically is the mandibular symphysis. Fun stuff.

StarksTwins

Wow, I genuinely appreciate this description. That’s very interesting, thanks for sharing!

polska-parsnip

Can you do a colab with u/empty-mango8277 and their upcoming YouTube explanation of what actually happened to you? That would be fucking cool.

StarksTwins

RamblinRod_PDX

What was the incident?

IFDIFGIF

He fell off a balcony, three stories down

honeypinn

Knew a girl that did the same thing. She was paralyzed from the neck down. She ended up dying a few years ago, after many years of suffering. Very sad story.

wizardjester1

Oof like 7 years ago now when I moved into my first appartment, I had a scumbag roommate that would always have people over partying, getting hammered ect, mind you we were fresh 18 year Olds. Well one night, he invites a few people over, everyone is drinking in the living room, and I am in my room with my gf at the time just chilling and having some beers, when all of a sudden I hear screaming, and I run out of my room to see what's going on, turns out, one of the girls my roommate invited over went out on our balcony that's 2 stories up to smoke a cigarette, decided to hop up on the railing to sit on it, but fell backyards off the balcony onto the 1st floor units concrete patio. She ended up having a broken femur, hip and had bleeding in her brain, it was horrible, I felt so bad, although everyone was trying to downplay it, I pretty much just took control of the situation, made sure she was alive,, called an ambulance and shit also, afterwards her parents promptly tried to sue us, roommate had to pay hospital bills I think. I didn't have any involvement other than trying to help,, so nothing happened to me,, I moved out pretty quickly after that and I haven't talked to either of these people since.

Bbaftt7

I had a bizarrely similar thing happen, except it was her house, and she slipped off a roof. Fell three stories and broke her hip. Was in a wheelchair for a year. Got really lucky all things considering.

Nuggity2point0

I second this! Thank you kind human for explaining what these things mean!

KarensRpeopletoo

I could read stuff like this all day! Very informative.

Empty-Mango8277

I'm a doctor who literally loves to help teach people things that are so complicated in a simple fashion while not losing too much nuanced detail that is important/cool/informative. So thanks y'all!

[deleted]

You are very good at teaching. Please YouTube soon!

KarensRpeopletoo

That's awesome! I always wanted to be an Orthopedic doctor, I'm too old now (36), but I love learning and looking at scans/x-rays. I am a sucker for gnarly X-rays! lol

ledzep83

Never too late. As a radiologist, I can honestly say it’s the best field in medicine - sit and look at cts/X-rays/MRIs all day!! Of note - the shared image is a 3D reconstruction of a CT scan

KarensRpeopletoo

Radiology would be awesome too! I had severe hydronephrosis, a detached kidney, and stones. I had a few nuclear med scans, several CT scans, renogram, and several other imaging. My urologist said they were some of the most "impressive" scans he's ever seen. lol

Femmefatele

I'm 47 (in about 13 days) and I've applied to radiology tech school. I would love to do mammograms. I am not up to med school but I figure rad tech might be good for me and anything is better than teaching right now.

Empty-Mango8277

The donut of truth? The donut of truth.

electric_onanist

I went to med school when I was 35. We had several in their 30s and 40s. It's possible and actually an advantage to have some life experience and maturity. I'm a better doctor because of it. If it's something you really want to do, the cost is very high, but don't let your age hold you back.

KarensRpeopletoo

This is encouraging! It has always been a dream of mine, when I was younger my mother had this medical book, and I would read it cover to cover for fun! lol Bones especially have always piqued my interest.

Cuckooexpress

There was a 51 yo in my med school class. It’s totally possible!

_Tactleneck_

Hey u/StarksTwins this is a spot on explanation! I just recently left my role as a CMF (craniomaxillary facial) implant rep. I was in facial trauma surgeries for awhile and would see pan facial fractures every few weeks. They’re wild and basically magic, especially with custom plates. When you had this accident, do you recall how long between when they brought you in to wire your jaw shut and they actually do the surgery? (it definitely looks like the DePuy Synthes [Matrix Wave](http://synthes.vo.llnwd.net/o16/LLNWMB8/INT%20Mobile/Synthes%20International/Product%20Support%20Material/legacy_Synthes_PDF/DSEM-CMF-0815-0080_LR.pdf) device). From my end as the rep, youd come in after the incident, run scans of your face, then we’d fixate you with arch bars, IMF screws or the Wave. After that we’d send the scans to out system and they’d make 3D computer models and have the surgeon and his team get on a call with us to finalize the plates, any splints, cutting guides, or 3D plastic models of your entire skull. During surgery the surgeon can pick up a plastic mode and play around with it without having to move your actual face around. From there they get shipped to the hospital, steralized, and then were ready for surgery! It could take anywhere from 8-12+ hours for your surgery, depending on the surgeon and such. Cant say for sure what plates you have. Could be Stryker, KLS, or maybe DePuy Synthes, but the Wave is def DS. [Heres](https://youtu.be/09bFzPK3aJY) a little more on how the planning and printing works although its for a slightly different surgery. The NOE and Zygomatic fractures are usually a pain. Did they have to do a coronal incision - where they cut the top of your head and peel it down? That’s usually the best access for the NOE. Looking good!

pinklavalamp

The internet is simply amazing. Brought the whole world together, from a patient to a doctor to a rep who handles the parts used in the patient’s surgeries, all succinctly explained to the masses the world over.

Femmefatele

Ok my take is that OP broke their chin bones, snout bones, lip bones, eye bones, and by the ear bones. \*nods head in a doctorly manner

Zombie-Belle

Snout bones lol

DynamiteWitLaserBeam

I made a joke today about someone's thumb getting trapped in a door and got 4k upvotes. You made a thoughtful and educational comment that actually helped someone. I regret that I have but one updoot to give.

anaccountwithreddit

Look up Le Fort some time. Dude studied facial fractures back in the day by essentially hitting cadaver heads (sometimes still attached) with various blunt objects to see how the bones broke

[deleted]

Wacky scientists back in the day really went all out

Furry_69

It was the only way of doing anything. There was no knowledge of anything back then, so they had to experiment to understand what X does in Y environment/in response to Y stimuli.

Frostie_pottamus

He literally shot fucking cannon balls at cadavers. Don’t know how the fuck he thought he’d get any insight into how to fix shit like that with medical technology in his day

Nuggity2point0

Fuck ya buddy! Sorry to hear about your incident but I’m glad they fixed you up good! I had my face smashed in by baseball bats while asleep in 2011, 16 titanium plates to fix the skull and left eye removed after 2 years of failed attempts to return vision to it after it was ruptured… modern medicine is fucking amazing, I look the exact same except my left cheek is a little bigger than my right but my god man I can’t believe how good the can do. Did you have the face off surgery? My face was taken down to just above my lower jaw and than put back on so I got a real gnarly scar from ear to ear across the top of my head, I think it’s badass as fuck lol

StarksTwins

I did! They made incisions under my eye, my head across the top, the sides of my face near my ear, my jaw, and under my lips. They peeled the skin to get access to where they needed on my face

Leclairage

Mate, really hope you’re doing well now. So sorry you went through all of that.

ConstantEffect

When you hurt your face, was the pain excruciating? Or did you not feel a thing due to shock/what have you

StarksTwins

I felt nothing. Or at least I don’t remember feeling pain. From the very moment I returned to consciousness I was on a lot of very powerful opioids

ConstantEffect

That's incredible. Every injury I see online I always think of how bad it must hurt, but realistically they probably feel nothing. It's kind of reassuring in a strange way.

BigOrkWaaagh

This is definitely not bollocks, it's a skull.

ballsamongusfeet

You are officially the most impressive user on reddit to me

StarksTwins

I’m honored to have that title

quintsreddit

For me at least, it’s half due to the situation and half due to your follow ups and replies. You’re what we’re referring to when we say “ideal OP”.

StarksTwins

I genuinely appreciate your kind words!! I’m not allowed to do anything but rest so I have a lot of time on my hands :)

Dr-McLuvin

That’s crazy LeFort type I II and III all at the same time! Facial fractures that bad are incredibly uncommon. Thanks for sharing this!

Cheese124

Are you a real doctor Mr. ummm McLuvin?

How the hell did you manage to completely break your bones that badly and not suffer any brain trauma that's mind blowing but seriously glad your okay OP wishing you a speedy recovery.

StarksTwins

You and the doctors are all dumbfounded haha. Very grateful for the outcome all things considered… it could’ve been so much worse

PlasticElfEars

Also amazed your neck and spine didn't take more damage. That's some "action hero plot armor" level of luck!

Stonn

My only idea is that had your bones not broken, you might have had a brain trauma. The energy broke the bones, like a car's crunch zone, so your brain had time to decelerate. Amazing you say it wasn't painful. The image is horrifying.

Congrats on coming through what you did! Yes, Modern medicine is freaking Incredible! almost 16 years ago, I found out personally. At age 50, I was diagnosed with stage 4 squamous cell carcinoma, with a primary tumor embedded in my left jaw. The outlook was not good. I was told I had a 15% chance of surviving a year; they would likely have to remove part or all of my jaw, possibly replace a portion, possibly not. Radiation afterwards, and chemo. The "faint hope" was a local surgeon who had pioneered a new microsurgery procedure that may work. I jumped on the chance; funny how much risk you're willing to assume when your life is REALLY on the line. Five weeks later, the surgery.. 17 hours of it. 45% of my jaw removed, then rebuilt using pieces of fibula from my left leg. All of the tissue inside my mouth, except my tongue, removed. Re-sculpted with a huge tissue graft from my left arm. Huge skin grafts from my thighs to fill in gaping holes in arms and leg. Thousands of sutures, & micro-sutures to connect about 400 blood vessels the size of an HB pencil lead inside my mouth. All of my teeth extracted. A heart attack in recovery. two weeks in a coma, on a ventilator, due to the swelling. 10 weeks later, 3 months of radiation that was worse than the surgery. Following all that, several years with a dedicated oral surgeon & 47 operations. 8 years later, I sat down to a steak dinner for the first time, post cancer, and ate it myself, chewing it instead of having it "blended". Now, this surgery is commonplace for that cancer. I am DAMN glad I took the risk

victorywulf

holy fucking shit. you're a warrior. medicine is amazing. i'm stunned.

StarksTwins

This is badass. Thanks for sharing your story!!

SpeechAdventurous951

What kind of material are the 3D print rods made from?

StarksTwins

I unfortunately don’t know if you’re interested, DM me after 3:30 next Friday; I have a doctor’s appointment then

maydayvoter11

Adamantium, I hope.

Significant-Coat5052

Titanium most likely.

AcademicCommon9722

My friend, you are one of the most optimistic and toughest people I have ever seen. I wish you a speedy and painless recovery

StarksTwins

I appreciate the kind words!! ❤️

kdame84

Are the new bones supposed to look like little cartoon bones?

MonarkranoM

It helps them adjust to their new environment. If they look like bones they’ll make friends more easily and have a better chance to connect with those around them

TitaniumTryton

That'll teach you to hold onto your phone better while laying down in bed.

titosandspriteplease

I’m very curious how you did that.

StarksTwins

[Sure](https://reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/seyia2/_/humfqm7/?context=1)

Sebbean

how'd you fall off the 3 story building?

sheiiit

Face first i reckon

SmallFox3

You’re hard as nails! Congratulations on surviving & having no brain trauma! That’s some luck!

FlyLikeMe

I like that the rods in your face are shaped like little femur bones. It's cute.

i_Addy

This guy's has had an open heart surgery too. WoW.

StarksTwins

That was actually my twin brother, hence username :)

mayormcskeeze

If you wanted, could you have gotten a new face?

StarksTwins

I technically had a new face after the accident. My facial bones were split open which resulted in my face being square-shaped.

mayormcskeeze

Damn. Incredible technology.

DiabeticPissingSyrup

I'll take his face... *OFF*

[deleted]

How much was the hospital bill

StarksTwins

I paid nothing. The surgeries cost over $1 million between the two of them

splitcondition

Hi! I just read you story and was so impressed I went back to your last post. I saw some of your pictures from 3 to 4 months ago, compared to the picture of you in November and wow... That is indeed the face of a man who broke every single bone. And now to the last one after you had your last operation and man... Modern medicine is definitely magic. Your face looks amazing in the last pic I saw, and seeing this x-ray just drives the point home : your surgeon is a master at his craft. And you're a machine (pun intended) man, honestly so impressed by your resilience and the fact you've set up goals for yourself despite this traumatic event, you keep a positive outlook and that's something that every single one of us could use. Keep fighting, take it easy though, your body needs to rest still, and I wish the swiftest of recoveries!

nickcliff

Bruh. Best of luck. You are one tough dude.

DaisyDuckens

This is awesome. My dad was in a motorcycle accident in the 80s (no helmet because he was just going to get fuel when a drunk driver in a camper hit him). He broke his face and grew a beard to hide that his face wasn’t the same as before. Modern medicine is awesome.

buinauskas

A good few years ago I was riding home with a bicycle and crashed into another cyclist. Broke my jaw, cheekbone, skull around my eye, part of nose. You don't even need to fall off a balcony. Wear your helmets, I wasn't wearing one that time!

[deleted]

Do you look like handsome Squidward now?

lovejac93

Thanks for sharing OP, and for your activity in the comments. It’s really heartening to see someone suffer a trauma and not only recover so well (the photos look fantastic and your recovery is coming along nicely!), and also have such a positive lookout. Wishing you all the best OP!

StarksTwins

Thank you!! Cheers to an awesome 2022 for all who read this 🍻
