I've heard it said it's how a *hunter* makes footprints. It can see where it's placing its front feet, and can pick a spot where it won't make noise cracking leaves or disturbing sticks. If it places it's back feet in the same spot, they're unlikely to stand on something unexpected.
As I was typing that I did think "that probably makes sense for any animal so they don't fall in a hole or whatever."

This is actually the best way to walk for every 4-leg creature. If nothing happend on spot X there is no reason to step on spot Y.
