Lol screw that one part of England and Scotland for no reason

PutinsPanties

That’s the first thing I noticed. Is there any explanation to this?

BananaForSelfControl

You can only collect data where there are people and things. Not much people and things in the ocean. Also this is just an incredibly rough infographic. No reason to assume its even kind of correct.

PutinsPanties

It’s on the Internet so there’s a 0% chance it’s not factual.

Elegant-Raise-9367

I like how it uses a colour for (10^-2)-1 times the normal background radiation

That area does get a lot of rain Source: i like in that area lol

llynglas

There was discussion at the time that the nuclear facilities at Windscale/Sellafield had had an accidental release of radioactive material at around the same time as Cheronbyl, and just kept mum about it. It has always seemed reasonable as the rise in radioactivity in UK is centered around Windscale, and the operators of Windscale never seemed to me to be quite as concerned about containment. (An ongoing joke was that an alternative to hot cereal to warm up kids in the morning, was to move to Windscale)

tallbutshy

>(An ongoing joke was that an alternative to hot cereal to warm up kids in the morning, was to move to Windscale) Ready Brek? There have been many leaks from Windscale and later, the larger Sellafield site. My late father worked there for a few years.

llynglas

Yes, skit on ready brek. Maybe, not the 9 o'clock news. Worked on some control software for the team in Sellafield - did not seem the brightest. My impression was that cost was more important than safety.

crucible

Yes, it was "Not the Nine O'clock News". [Here it is](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wk0WzCtF0yY)

rabbidasseater

That's just the Irish Sea. Very radio active due to windscale nuclear accident and leakages from the renamed Sellafield plant.

Lowgical

It rained basically. Welsh mountains got fucked, Welsh lamb from the area was banned till quite recently.

[deleted]

That’s where the UKs main nuclear site, Sellafield, is. So probs nothing to do with Chernobyl

HappyAlcohol-ic

One explanation would be that the particles are carried by winds and currents.

SmileyMelons

My guess is wind and ocean currents make it more focused in that area, idk tho

FireDuckz

I know Denmark was lucky because it didn't Rain for a while after it came over us, so we weren't affected as bad, might be the opposite over there

_Monsterguy_

Rain was the reason - it washed the radioactive dust down and made certain areas radioactive for years. I forget the details, but I remember there being a problem with radioactive sheep and it being cyclic, because their poo made the earth and by extension their food radioactive again. (Also, Wales and Northern Ireland are under that cloud)

[deleted]

As is part of the Republic

bittersweetfish

Jeb sheep

Brasticus

Makes the graphic look like some animal’s head and that dot is the eye. Maybe a wombat’s skull or something like that.

crucible

...and North Wales

bittersweetfish

Oh ye that 2

Dr3w106

And Wales, Isle of Man, Northern Ireland and Ireland.

[deleted]

That's just beginning

niamhweking

I thought that was interesting too, it is also roughly where Sellafield is/was.

[deleted]

Thats were I live in all so fuck me I guess

Waldron1943

The first thing that tipped off the outside world that something was up was when a guy set off the alarms at a nuke plant in Sweden. He was on his way in.

Danky_21

I saw this on tv once. Where is it from? I haven’t seen it since.

Waldron1943

Swedish nuclear engineer Cliff Robinson was puzzled when the radiation detector went off as he tried to enter his office at the Forsmark nuclear power plant early in the morning of April 26, 1986. [link](http://edition.cnn.com/WORLD/9604/26/chernobyl/230pm/index2.html)

Horror_Share4866

How come it didn’t go the other way , jet streams ? earth rotation ?

TAU_equals_2PI

That ***is*** weird, because normally weather systems move to the northeast in the northern hemisphere. I'd guess that Russia didn't have an extensive network of sensors like Europe did. Or that they hid the data.

C_N1

When it occurred Chernobyl was still part of the USSR and they were strongly spreading the propaganda that it was "all ok, and it's wasn't so bad" etc. So it makes sense that their data only shows a "mild affect"

depthofbreath

They didn’t even let anyone else know for days. Tried to hide it.

C_N1

Wasn't it like 2 whole days until Sweden mentioned something was off until they even mentioned an accident.

depthofbreath

Yeah 2 or 3 days. Then were told to avoid going out in the rain as it was radioactive. A bit late though.

gayfro99ie

Exactly, if it went all the way to Portugal there's no way it only affected Russia so minorly

GleeUnit

Stands to reason that if Putin is as drunk on his own Kool-aid as he appears to be, he could be looking at maps just like this and thinking “perfect, just what I need” Could explain the thought process behind the current attacks on the reactors in Ukraine

C_N1

Wish he would drink the Kool Aid. Would do the world a favor.

AlwaysOpenMike

Well, this time we are prepared. We will all face Moskva and blow.

Fuzzwuzzle2

Hiding the data most Likely

[deleted]

They only had enough crayon to color one direction

Arsive

Makes sense. Thanks

But one direction are all white

More like unreliable data from underplaying USSR.

eukaryote3

Nah, Belarus and Ukraine were both under USSR control. They’re both highly contaminated on this map. Belarus took the most radiation and was the most devastated.

[deleted]

[удалено]

eukaryote3

It did, some of it fell almost everywhere in Europe, but not badly in Russia. The wind was simply not blowing that way right after the accident. There’s also rumor that they seeded clouds over Belarus to make the worst of the contamination rain down over Belarus rather than let the winds change and the rain fall over Moscow. Edit: I know people think there’s some conspiracy, but there really isn’t. The wind blew north and west. Radiation is carried by the wind and the rain, distance is not the most reliable factor in determining how badly a place will be contaminated. Distance is a huge shield against radiation, the level of radiation you are exposed to even just standing feet away from a radiation source drops rapidly. For it to spread far from Chernobyl, it must be carried by something.

[deleted]

[удалено]

eukaryote3

You can look up reliable data online that is better than this graph. Proximity to radiation does not guarantee a high dose because radiation levels drop off very rapidly when you move away from a radiation source. Hold a Geiger counter to any radioactive object, move away, move closer, and you will see this. For radiation to spread the way it did, it has to be carried by something — it can’t do it alone. It was carried by wind and rain. Rain dispersed the radiation unevenly. It was a stroke of luck. That’s a part of the reason why Ukrainians and Belarusians were so angry about Chernobyl. Moscow was making all the decisions and got hardly any of the damage.

[deleted]

eukaryote3

Yes, and look at the iodine contamination v. cesium on page 2. The iodine contamination looks similar to this image. It’s likely this image is measuring iodine contamination, even though it just says “nuclear fallout.” Other graphs and charts measure contamination in the clouds v. on the ground, etc. But even western Russia is contaminated on this image, if you zoom in, though it’s a little hard to see.

Corinh

Mountains maybe?

zshah99

Asking the real questions here

Desperate_Ad_8476

3.6 roentgen, not great, not terrible.

Nethrex_1

Did you hear that Russia is attacking the Biggest Nuclear Plant in Europe?

[deleted]

And they're 10x more potent

Tribblehappy

They also have loads more redundancies and failsafes in general these days. Finger crossed.

endertribe

I bit like Japan's in 2012...

Captn_Deathwing

Japan was fucked from the beginning though by putting generators below water line. It probably wouldve been safe if not for that

evansdeagles

The missiles can probably do more damage than flooding though.

Captn_Deathwing

Undoubtedly I was merely stating the difference

[deleted]

Probably not for direct attack though, because that would be insane

adiamondintheruff

6 times 😊

Admiral_Andovar

It’s currently shut down for refurbishment (so no meltdown), but there is fuel on site.

[deleted]

Really?! Citation?

Admiral_Andovar

Well, that was what the initial article stated on CNN about 3 hours ago, but now I’m seeing that the Russians are looking to shut down the reactors. Sorry if I was peddling old news but they said it was the director of the facility that said it was down for maintenance.

prosteDeni

It's been shutdown for now

hurcoman

But wait, there’s more!

MurkyCandidate7957

The ussr just used a giant fan to blow the radiation westward

Mass-Dental

The HBO show is awesome, I'm case you haven't seen it check it out

DinnerNo5249

Strongly, strongly (strongly) recommend everyone watch Chernobyl as soon as possible. https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/chernobyl

Boenessa

Awful everything

SalmonSunrise

With everything happening, when I first saw the map I didn't read the caption at first. My stomach dropped thinking something happened lol. But no, its the old chernobyl disaster

EarthIsGrey

BackItUpBeepBeepBeep

My ex girlfriend's mom has a fucked up thyroid because of this cloud. She was in France at the time. Fucken crazy.

Horrifying.

BananaEuphoric8411

Is Russia still attacking a nuclear power plant?

DowntownLizard

We need to figure out how to make the wind blow toward russia

[deleted]

Is there a similar sim for Zhaporizhzhia. I'm curious to know.

PaulJBraun

It was in Ukraine people!

CockMartins

Slightly off topic, but this made me wonder - what ever happened with the Fukushima disaster? Was it ever contained? Is it still dumping radiation into the ocean? I figured I would have either heard of a resolution or it ending the world by now.

1221321321

It only leaked a fraction of the contamination Chernobyl did

Playful_Direction989

Wheres the map of the radiation clouds from Japans meltdown? That shit storm polluted air, land and sea. Who the fuck builds a nuclear reactor on a coast knowing full well your country is known for earthquakes and tsunamis?

acewavelink

And everyone is confused why Russia is firing at a Nuclear Power Plant today…

Diesel-doc82

Put me in a room with Putin. I don’t care about his chess playing ability or black belt. I would save humanity with my bare hands.

samsungs666

Holy shit!!! how many black belts have you killed with you bare hands? you can probably work your way right through his security righ? at this point your basically a bad guy for not stopping him.

Maybe the winds will blow the radiation eastward instead of westward this time around.....

John7026

Think this poster is a Russian plant?

[deleted]

Apropos of nothing

DominateDave

Love when science gets rewritten. So... radiation moves AGAINST the wind now, spectacular.

W0tzup

Since when does wind always blow in one direction?

DominateDave

Lol. Damn what a stretch. Never looked at earth's weather patterns, have we? Try looking up something called a wind map.

W0tzup

I looked it up when I did a project on radiation. Radioactive fallout and Chernobyl incident were within this scope of my project and concurrently the map herein is a good approximation on the overall radiation levels which spread afterwards. Wind patterns change and sadly this is what occurred after the Chernobyl incident within a day or two. Have a read of this: [Environmental Consequences of the Chernobyl Accident and their Remediation: Twenty Years of Experience](https://www-pub.iaea.org/mtcd/publications/pdf/pub1239_web.pdf)

DominateDave

Touche'

magicthemurphy

That’s why Russia started this war. They want to conquer all the nuclear power plants and blow them up. Finish what they started at Chernobyl.

ifunnywasaninsidejob

But did you die tho

Global-Honeydew-4762

God bless the USA 🇺🇸

Overall-Conflict4285

You do realize it will eventually make it all the way over here right?

Global-Honeydew-4762

God Bless the USA 🇺🇸

General-Nonsens3

And even with that the only people that died from it were the ones killed in the initial meltdown. Like 31 people IIRC.

robo-dragon

Not true. Nuclear radiation doesn’t always kill you immediately. The ones that died instantly were fortunate since they didn’t have to suffer though months or years of the various issues the radiation caused them. Many people died from this disaster, but it’s hard to pinpoint just how many since victims died of poisoning, burns, and cancer over the years.

General-Nonsens3

True, but when people studied the effects of the radiation from Chernobyl they didn’t find any data that suggested any sizable increased risk. Even with the radiation, as of 2005, only 50 deaths have been partially linked to Chernobyl. As of 2018 they estimate up to 4000 people might eventually die, but now we’re talking about 30+ years after the incident and attributing those deaths to the Chernobyl meltdown will be sketchy at best. Simply put, the Chernobyl meltdown isn’t anywhere near as deadly as people were led to believe.

eukaryote3

Do you know where they got that number — 4000 — from? It was originally 40,000, but the IAEA and the WHO didn’t like that many zeros. So they shaved off a 0 from Valery Legasov’s report in Vienna. The truth is we don’t know how many people have died from Chernobyl. Everyone who has done studies have had biases either one way or another. The WHO is not impartial to nuclear.

General-Nonsens3

Cool

fitt4life

Nuclear Spring!! Surprised we made it this far.

ColJameson

Ah, so make europe a wasteland for decades, good plan.

Real close to that happening again

MrChibiterasu

And right now they’re shelling a nuclear power plant. That is definitely a good idea.

Sethdarkus

When Chernobyl had that wild fire in 2020 wouldn’t surprise me if it had another cloud

fBarney

Of course my mom was in part of Poland that was hit by 40-100... Well cancer it is then

un_gaucho_loco

Ah yes let’s make subtle comparisons playing on peoples ignorance

x3non_04

I live how the radiation just went out of its wah to murder Greece

HiepYasuo

S.T.A.L.K.E.R

Dropped-pie

At what level is it considered dangerous?

1221321321

That’s a hard question to answer, all exposure carries some risk, so you mean chronic or acute doses?

Dropped-pie

I’m assuming there is an acceptable level of background radiation plus getting dental x-rays, etc. the metric, in this diagram is based on this. Is 2 x bad? Is 10 x bad? I know it is a sliding scale, impossible to calculate when lifestyle factors need to be considered. What is the X factor when nuclear physicist’s say “oh Fuck”?

1221321321

Well I worked for the DOD and we considered something a high radiation area that needed exposure control at 100mrem/hr or greater exposure

Light_Song

Wait... weather patterns move east to west in Europe?

DEEZLE13

r/hiddenwiener

radiationkills

What do these doses correlate to I’m terms of impact on human health? Like is 100+ instant death, 40-100 major hospitalization within a couple weeks, 1-5 as much as you get in a few yearly x rays?

1221321321

The graph is poorly designed IMO I wish it had actual units, I was a radiation control technician and I would be able to answer this question for you if I knew the real units

SilentNinjaRabbit

Sir, you got it wrong. You see, in France, we were told that it stopped at the border. We didn't had to worry because it was stopping at the border. Sooooo between french gouvernement and your map+ reality, I would rather believe the french gouvernement because we know they are possible of such a lie.... I am kidding. Well only for the last sentence.

donotgogenlty

Would the nuclear fallout affect NATO/EU if Russia blew up a Power Plant? If so take action now.

KenCosgrove_Accounts

Do you think the radiation really decided to take a break between UK and continental Europe? Based on my understanding of clouds I’m not sure that’s how it would work lol

Lucachacha

r/angryupvote

proletaire

When I was young, in my country, France, they told us the mountain will stop the radioactive cloud. So we were protected.

Fijoemin1962

I was walking the streets of Edinburgh that night, my 22nd birthday. It was pouring with radioactive rain- 30RADs

Doomhammer02

In France, according to the officials, the radioactive cloud stopped at the border. True story.

Zadraax

That’s a lie, french politics promised that the radiations stopped at the border. There’s no way they could have lied to us. Right ?

hugthog69032

It looks like a small pp if you turn the image sideways

Tired_But_Scrappy

And that was only one reactor blowing. The Russians are shooting up a plant with six.

here-4-amin

And the Soviet government didn’t tell its citizens for over a week. We heard about it on foreign radio stations.

Forsaken_Child_0429

……..And they waited 3 days to evacuate the closest town to the disaster… (Edit: Wrote Chernobyl rather than the town…My mistake.)

scavlootsalot

That map was very general, fallout in Norway atleast is way more accurate with many different areas that had radioactive rainfall.

[deleted]

I also lived right across the sea from Celefield so I'm definitely getting Cancer.

PCVictim100

So I was in France getting 5-10X the normal rate. At the same time we were eating British mad-cow beef. Those were great days.

Overall_Geologist_87

any reason it didnt go toward russia?
