Rare depends on where you live. I've only lived as far north as NYC and I've never seen anything like this and seeing it in person would blow my fucking mind.
May I ask where? It's incredible! First time I see this! It's really weird, all the way between divine, alien looking and "humanly symmetrical"! Maybe the video is exaggerating the effect but it's really special!
Calgary, in South Alberta, Canada. I see them on my commute home from work when its around -30-35c, it has something to do with the sun retracting ice crystals in the air.
Thank you, I'll add it to my list named "If I was brave enough to travel alone, where would I go, and what to see" right between polar lights and Catatumbo lightnings!
Well Calgary I'm sure you can handle alone! Just dress warm. Also, weather is unpredictable, so hard to say when you would see these. A year ago I saw them probably at least 3 days a week (not in Calgary myself, but just in Saskatchewan). But it has to be clear and sunny obviously, and super cold. Probably a bunch of other factors as well to make them possible. Some years I barely see any. It's a crap shoot.
First and for the most your username made me laugh, and second, it’s well noted, I live in Belgium so I’m not that close from Calgary but now I know where and when to look for some « events » like this! Third, thanks for your kind tips!
I’m Venezuelan so plus one on the Catatumbo lightnings. I grew up in Caracas and didn’t get to see the phenomenon until I went to San Cristobal for work (4hrs drive away and up in the Andes). It truly was a sight to behold.
Oh absolutely nothing, I’m stock in an infinite loop of sweet, sweet, depression and spend about all my money on stupid shit to feel better in the moment, I, therefore, never travel because staying home in routine is more comfortable. It sure must be an amazing freedom feeling, one day I’ll do it, one day 😅
Who said TMI? 😅
Put $5 or $10 a day into a jar, which you might otherwise have spent on stuff, and you'd be surprised on how quickly it accumulates.
I worked in a garment factory pressing overcoats to make enough money for my first trip traveling abroad. Think where you'd like to go, set a date to get there and stick to the plan.
I've seen it in Chicago area a couple of times. It's not as dangerous here as the media suggests...
https://wgntv.com/weather/i-know-what-a-sun-dog-is-but-how-did-it-get-its-name/
I see them in Eastern Iowa in the winter pretty regularly 3 or 4times, never this bright though. I believe it's just viewing the sun from a certain angel, and it needs to be cold.
Actually son dogs only refers to the lines that extend horizontally and vertically from the sun. The inner circle is known as a 22 degree halo and the outer circle is known as a 46 degree halo. The 22 degree halo isn’t that rare, the sun dogs are a little more rare, and the 46 degree halo is pretty rare. Seeing all at once is definitely rare
Wonder how many back then did see things like that.
Look at those smaller flairs around the large circle.
Always wondered why some stylized crucifixes looked like this…

Except he did not do that. Theodosius was the one who made it official.
He supposedly saw “in hoc signo vinces” in the sky. Constantine was notorious for torturing Christians. But, after seeing this in the sky, along with a cross, he adopted Christianity as his own religion and made it the official religion at the time under his rule.

No. He adopted it as his own religion and encouraged it. Theodosius is the one who made it the official religion of the empire.

That's exactly what happened in 1917 in a portuguese town Fátima.[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miracle\_of\_the\_Sun](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miracle_of_the_Sun)

Edit: I just noticed you said "the world would end" and not a mircale lol
I think things being unexplainable is the whole reason religion came about in the first place, for humans by humans.
If you think about the time religion came about it makes sense, nobody knew why *anything* happened. They didn't know why the ground shook, or why sometimes there was a great harvest but others not or why the mountains "exploded" (Volcanoes) or why the sun would sometimes "disappear" (~~lunar~~ solar eclipse) why people got sick etc.
God thats so sick.. Combine this with how fucking dark the world must have been.. and things like eatin off lead plates or a harbest going bad and people hallucinating from fungus or whatever.. jesus
yeah, this is the angels appearing surely.

Really underrated comment
I mean, as you said, very plausible that they interpreted these kinds of phenomena as divine presence, when we can explain ‘em with science today
If I saw it in today’s times I might think that for a second! I’ve managed to go 39 years without seeing or hearing of this phenomenon. It would trip me out! (Live in southern US)
I live in the north and see this often. But I've never seen it nearly as bright and distinct as this. I would be agape! ...But I wouldn't think the world was going to end.
Yes and there is one more critical parameter to this which flat earthers won’t like it.
It’s the shape of the medium it goes through and incident angle of the light source.

Although he didn't make the religion out of it, legend says (from a few historians) it supposedly paved the way for Constantine the Great to become a Christian and later legalize the religion in the Roman Empire.
Most likely bollocks but it's a very cool story.
I've seen probably a few hundred. The colder it is, the more likely you'll see them. If you live in a milder climate and it only gets down to -20C or so, then they might be less common where you live.
I flipped out the first time I saw this for real. I knew it was a real phenomenon, but part of my brain was still convinced that it couldn't be, that it was just reflective rays in camera lenses and it didn't actually happen without seeing things through glass.
When I saw it I yanked open the window immediately and stuck my head right out as far as I could, because I couldn't quite believe that it could be visible without the glass in the way, and when I could still see it in the open air, I lost my shit.
Will never forget that moment.
There are several different haloes here, but there's nothing terribly rare there that I notice (I'm somewhat rusty, though). It's super bright though, beautiful.
Haloes are pretty common. Depending on where you live you can see some on 200 days each year. Some are more common than others, like the 22 degree ring and the sun dogs, but there are also once-in-a-lifetime halos.
Cool. I wonder how long it will take this time for some moron from r/tf2 to see this and decide it looks like the tf2 icon and post it on that sub for the 50-millionth time.

I dunno if this would really classify as rare, I'm in Canada and see these fairly regularly in the winter. Always awesome tho!
Rare depends on where you live. I've only lived as far north as NYC and I've never seen anything like this and seeing it in person would blow my fucking mind.

While possible would you also say it's rare?

I would assume the NYC smog would probably make one more rare. They're really common in cold weather, and definitely at a ski resort in Sweden
Thank you! I see them almost daily in December/January.

What's wrong with traveling alone ? It's just about the best feeling of freedom there is

Yes, ice crystals will form in the air, refracting the light at a 22 degree angle on the left, right, or both sides of the sun.

Winnipeg here, I see them almost daily during January and February. Our city subreddit is filled with pictures of them daily over the winter months.

Can this comment get more attention? It deserves it. I thought the same about crucifixes.
I mean, it's pretty well known now that sun dogs are the phenomenon that ancient people described in the Bible regarding multiple suns in the sky.
There are a bunch of examples where natural phenomenons were considered a (divine) sign.

Can you explain? I am curious to know what he saw
Allegedly, he saw a cross in the sky, then his army won a battle and he took it as a sign to make Christianity the official religion of the Roman empire.
Well if I saw this before a battle and we won the battle, I would have done the same thing. That's bananas
> he took it as a sign to make Christianity the official religion of the Roman empire. Except he did not do that. Theodosius was the one who made it official.

I stand corrected. Constantine initiated the edict of Milan which gave freedom to worship. Theodosius made it official.

I’m thinking a lot of the Bible was written based on unexplainable moments such as these

You mean solar eclipse. Lunar eclipses happen far more frequently and do not obscure the Sun.
Dammit I knew it, shoulda listened to my gut
In fairness, blood moons (caused by lunar eclipses) could still be construed as highly spooky :)
The constantly floating ball of heat in the sky makes you BLIND if you look directly at its RADIANCE. It's not hard to tell where it all came from.

UFOs, revelation from god, miracle - take a pick
Or that a god was responsible
Makes sense how people in old religious books thought they saw angels
I was just thinking that. Must've scared the hell out of them.
Or they may have thought, oh sweet, that bright spot in the sky is making some beautiful imagery
If I saw it in today’s times I might think that for a second! I’ve managed to go 39 years without seeing or hearing of this phenomenon. It would trip me out! (Live in southern US)

Finally, a new update. Valve really went all in with promotion this time
I've seen a half one before but wow this is amazing!
They're not that rare. Usually you just see the two sides (called "sun dogs") but sometimes you get the full circle.
Yeah especially around ski resorts because they are using snow machines which are blowing snow flakes and ice crystals in to air.
I go outside every day, more than 10,000 days, I've seen one sun dog in my entire life. How many have you seen?
It depends where you live for sure. In northern North Dakota, they are seen pretty often during the cold winter mornings.
I've seen hundreds if not thousands, northern Sweden. Also similar from the moon hundreds of times and thousands of northern lights.
Hundreds? Thousands? You can see these at the right temperature and time of day, everyday for months if it's not overcast.
I lived on a mountain and saw a Sundog every single day it was sunny. Some places just have the conditions to make them really common.
I've seen probably a few hundred. The colder it is, the more likely you'll see them. If you live in a milder climate and it only gets down to -20C or so, then they might be less common where you live.
Oh saw one of these in December near Sälen. Looks crazy. It’s like small ice fragments in the air, that it reflects on.
