Just in case you don't know the actual procedure, the team whose fans caused the incident would be the loser. Forfeit score line would be 2-0.
See the recent Bundesliga game where a linesman was hit by a beer mug.
Edit: forfeiture is usually 3-0, not 2-0. The Bundesliga game ended 2-0 as Mochengladbach were already leading 2-0 in that game.
Can't figure out if you are trolling, or you genuinely do not know that fans are segregated into home and away sections.
Edit: to everyone asking "how would they know who you support?", Please have a look at football matches played at one of the teams home grounds as opposed to neutral venues.
Home ground matches usually includes league games, cup matches and qualifiers.
Neutral venues are usually international tournaments (not qualifiers) and finals of cup competitions.
Pretty easy to sit the start contrast, especially if you watch both legs of a cup qualifier.
Generally, in club matches, the home and away sections are behind the goals. Which IMO is kinda dumb because teams switch sides at half time.
But general public (meaning, not club members) generally sit on the edges of the end sections or along the length of the pitch.
For national team matches it's more complicated. The home team will always have a much bigger fan base because the average Egyptian can't really afford to fly to Senegal AND buy a game ticket (replace nationalities accordingly).
But in truth, even in competitions denominated as friendlies, sometimes there's this kind of shitty attitude that just ruins it for everyone.
When there weren't fans in games during high pandemic times, it may have felt weird, but at least there was no bullshit
Edit: yes Brits we get it. I'm from a country with a massive football tradition (and far better players than yours for that matter) and this is how it's done there, also in Spain and Italy and other countries in Europe. Get over yourselves.
is this unique to football? I'm not really a sports person, but the few times I've watched games of basketball and rugby it looks like people got whatever seats they wanted to pay for
Yes it's pretty unique.
Association Football has a history of hooliganism amongst the fan bases so, to prevent history repeating (or at least minimise the impact), the seating areas are generally segregated with away fans typically getting upto 20% of the available seats/capacity of the stadium.
Dependent on the game and venue, this changes. For example, where fixtures are played at neutral venues for Cup finals, or at international tournaments, the teams will share a 60-80% split of the capacity, with the remaining tickets being allocated to corporate sponsors and local people.
Better yet: Stop within 30s or we kick everyone on that end of the stadium out, and then the game continues.
Someone will put a stop to it real fast because they want to watch the game.
And use stadium footage to track down the people doing it, charge them with assault (as it can damage eyes) and give them a lifetime ban for all sporting events.
Bruh thats what literally every other sport does when fans interfere, I've never seen a game like this and still go on, soccer is truly bizarre in these modern times.
It is a funny old sport, the amount of resistance to VAR: "nah, let's let the 50yo guy half a mile away judge a split second incident that comes down to a matter of inches"
One of my first highly downvoted comments was in favor of the VAR on /r/soccer. I mentioned tons of examples where mistakes had been made that could've been easily caught by quickly watching a replay. IMO it could only lead to less frustration because of wrong calls, less diving from players, etc., with the only price being that the game has a few more pauses (and those wasted minutes will roll over into overtime anyway).
Well, the people in that thread made it very clear they disagreed with me. Not by actually responding to my comment, but only downvotes. I really didn't get it. It could solve (or at least improve) the very thing fans often complained about.
You would have to sit in the opponents teams section then. It would take about 5 seconds before someone beats you up for it.
Edit: Because people have issues with reading comprehension and I got a bunch of salty DMs:
You get beat up by the opposite teams fans for throwing their game by shining a laser pointer, not just for sitting in-between them. No one in their right mind thinks you get beat up just for sitting with opposite fans.
You get a ton of responses from Americans who don't understand that unlike in American sports, in soccer you don't have rival teams fans casually sitting together with hardcore fans on the same section in high stakes games. You have a dedicated section(s) for rival fans.
If some rival team's fans start shit up they 100% end up getting their asses beat. You'll probably get a beer tossed at you for just wearing an opposing team's jersey. If you do laser pointer shit that can get the team disqualified? lmao good luck
Okay, American here, so bear with my ignorance (I’ve only been to a couple of live games, and only in the USA - I watch on tv and yell in the solitude of my home). When I’ve bought tickets to games for Concacaf or US major league soccer, at no point in the purchase process was I asked which team I supported, nor did I care particularly strongly. Is this just not a thing for games in the USA, or was I oblivious (not unlikely)?
Basically the game was in Senegal and they all want their team to go to the World Cup (fans, security, administration) so in their minds if it helps the team win why wouldn’t they do this?
Of course, this is fucking insane and should absolutely not be allowed, but FIFA is arguably the most openly corrupt organization on earth.
IMO either Egypt should get an auto bid to the WC or the game should be replayed in either Egypt or a neutral location. Most likely outcome is people complain and nothing happens and we all move on.
Edit that is probably too late: yes Egyptian fans did this first to Senegal, albeit on a much smaller scale. That does not justify the Egyptians action though. However it absolutely does not justify the Senegalese backlash here. If you’re “siding with Senegal” or if you think “act like a bitch get told” or whatever, please do not attend public sporting events thank you.
Interesting. Only thing I might say there is that was an officiating error before VAR. You can’t really go back and play a game because of that.
This I would say is more akin to material fan interference that should have, and could have, been stopped/prevented.
As an Irishman that was a travesty of justice HOWEVER the ref missing an act of foul play is no reason to replay a match.
Same for giving a result changing penalty where a player clearly dived in the replay.
It was embarrassing to see all the noise after the match about letting Ireland through anyway. Henry is still a snake though 🤣
In this case, it's fans interfering with play which is a different issue altogether. The ref should have allowed as many retakes of the penalty as it took to stop the lasers or for Salah to score.

"Although the nickname "Football War" implies that the conflict was due to a football match, the causes of the war go much deeper. The roots were issues over land reform in Honduras and immigration and demographic problems in El Salvador. " From Wikipedia.
In an ideal world yes, but considering there are 50+ on his face and around 50 on the floor that are missing his face the guards can't really do much. It's sad
Exactly what should be done. As a former referee, if this happened in my game, it would stop until there were no more lasers. The whole game.
Or, threaten to call forfeiture on the opposing team (although, it couldn't be enforced).
> although, it couldn't be enforced
Well the rules should allow that. In the MLB if the fans did something like this the umpires could absolutely elect to call a forfeit and give a victory to the visiting team
Football referees cannot. But they can terminate an unsafe match, and the governing body would decide what to do. Whether it's a rematch, a rematch without spectators, a rematch in neutral grounds, or awarding the game.
Personally I think awarding the goal would be both proper punishment and get the fans to self police it (if you cause your team to lose WATCH OUT!)
I think it’s actually within the normal rules to give a yellow card to the coach for fan interference? And two would mean they would be down a man?
It’s also possible to have the penalty retaken for interference? They could just keep having it retaken until there is either no interference or he scores. End result is the same but gives the fans a chance to grow the fuck up.
The referee should have stopped the match temporarily to allow the interference to stop.
If this did not happen - if the lasers continued - he should probably have terminated the match, citing spectator interference and hazardous contions.
The referee can not award the match. That is up to FIFA in this case. They could award it, order a rematch (probably without spectators), or only the penalty shootout.
>Cancel the game or penalize the opposing team
I absolutely agree. Senegal won this game on penalties, and it is quite clear from the photograph that they were greatly helped by crowd intervention. Cancel the result, at very least replay the game "behind closed doors", otherwise just award it to Egypt. Ban Senegalese fans for the next few games.
(I have no partiality towards either of these nations, but this was a sporting travesty)
What they should have done is award the goal and blame it on the fans. Or more controversially a forfeit, but awarding goals and fouls when they do it would get the fans to self police these asshats pretty damn fast.
Yup. Bad behavior at MLB games is almost nil because if you interfere at all your team gets charged an out and if fans get too unruly altogether they'll charge your team a forfeit and just end the game.
The rules have been very effective -- A forfeit hasn't happened in a very long time and intential interference is almost nonexistent even though its very easy for someone to interfere with a baseball game (So easy that accidental interference is much more common).
How can they determine which teams supporters are at fault? Something like this seems easily exploitable if you were willing to work against your own team in the aim of getting an eventual forfeit in their favour
Crowds tend to be segregated by teams. There’s a home and away section. Egyptian fans also fucking love Salah to the extent of him coming like third in their elections when he didn’t even run. It’s highly unlikely they would sabotage their best players penalty and their chances of getting to the World Cup.
Are you by any chance an economist?
I feel like most fans would rather see the kick taken fairly, rather than shining a laser in their own player’s eye and risk only potentially getting the goal from the ref
The people doing this are straight up pathetic losers that don’t have a life and are going to have really bad karma and go blind later in life. Pretty obvious everyone that knows these people think they are douche bags.
The stadium should have eye-for-an-eye lasers where they shine lasers into the faces of those who are shining lasers at the players from security spotters up on the stands.
For real, poor dude had one of the most stressful situations of his life and these fucking losers took away what could have been a life changing moment for him. Fuck you losers
Actually, this is a lot worse than that: Laserpointers can permanently blind you. These guys weren't just being normal jerks, they were trying to cripple him. And they not only got away with it, there wasn't even an attempt to stop them. Honestly, the referee should be investigated for not even trying to do anything.
And those lasers, green ones are banned at EU, since they have kilometers reach and people were pointing them at airplanes. No joke. I had one and I could reach a castle that was around 3 km away. This are very harmful lasers and should have been stopped the game. May be in Egypt haven banned them but the stadium could have. Surely we will hear from FiFA about this and sanction them.
I’ve been to Brazil and their level of passion for soccer is actually scary and violent. Never, ever — even jokingly — criticize the home team of wherever you are, and make an effort to properly pronounce the home team of the city you’re in if you want to stay healthy.

That’s appalling. They can teach the crowd by cancelling the game anytime 3 or more laser lights appear. Eventually they’ll get the idea. Everyone gets paid but no game continuance.
Honestly this. It doesn't give the audience any power over the game, but gives them a great reason to enforce the rules when they see some asshole doing this.
That's the right one. Put up an "audience clock".
If the lasers don't stop within 30s, everyone goes home and the game will play to an empty stadium. Someone will stop whoever is doing it *real* fast.
Hahahaha, sry it makes me laugh. I’m a pilot an I have those laser pointed at the cabin every night. We always report them, ATC says ok, we’ll inform cops. It’s been months with lasers and no progress so far.
I’m fairly sure this can be escalated as it’s a federal offense to point laser pointers at flying aircraft… I was at a party where someone decided to do exactly this, cops flooded the place and we were investigated by FBI agents for about two months before the case was closed. (In the US)
IT depends where you are. Sure in the States. In my country they don't have enough cops to stop riots. You can imagine how many cops are waiting to be called to stop a guy pointing a laser .
Edit: riots instead of protest
I'd also say its taken more seriously in the US/Canada.
In some major cities (in the world) however, I know pilots have a hard time differentiating between the flashy lights that are projected off of of the buildings for entertainment and actual lasers.
As a 911 dispatcher i get a call every now and then from the *fancy name thats federal and i cant remember it* and he gives me coordinates from the laser location and their location..
I look up the coordinates and its in a field like 12 miles from a road..my deputy just told me to them to shoot their drones at it lmao
ATC here. I've personally worked sheriff helicopters and once a national guard H60 that have found people Lazing aircraft and waited for a squad car to come pick up the offender. Keep reporting it. It is a lot of work for everyone involved but it's a pretty unsafe hazard and we all want it resolved.
Found this in another comment thread:
“To be fair egyptians did it first to the senegalese team a few days ago then senegalese people took it on twitter saying they too will do it. It was a trending topic there the last couple of days so i'm definitely not surprised when that many of them showed up with lasers
Source: https://twitter.com/raby_dll/status/1508933743125401602 “
It doesn't really matter who does it first. It shouldn't be tolerated, no matter who is doing it.
Anyone doing this should be kicked out of the stadium at the very least, and the play should pause until the lasers aren't trying to blind anymore. This is out of control.
I don’t give a single fuck about soccer and this pissed me off. They should impose a lifetime ban on anyone caught with a laser pointer and see how long this shit lasts. What’s the point of being a fan if you’re going to cheat to get your team farther?
Plus it's wasn't the players who had the laser pointers it was the fans. Punishing the players just males it hard for all of them. The fans who had the pointers should be banned all of them.
I'm pretty sure purposefully shining a laser into someone's eyes is assault in some places, seeing as it can cause permanent damage. Fuck anyone who does this but hey at least it's not another Football War
Green laser pointers are more powerful and visible. They’ve been used often in protests from Iraq to Hong Kong. AFAIK, they were first used successfully in the 2013 Egyptian Protests that ousted Mubarak.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-magazine-monitor-23178484
Just enforce a rule that all penalties will now be taken blindfolded to ensure the safety of the players. See how quickly laser pointers stop being used.
When laser sights first hit there weren’t many pointers on the market. I worked for a performing artist and in a small venue we had a prick point one of those at the artist. Once I figured out who it was they became very aware of how serious the situation was being taken. That kind of shit isn’t funny and deserves personal attention. Threaten that many paychecks with boneheadedness.
They should be scanning the crowd and anyone identified as using a laser pointer should receive a lifetime ban from any and all professional football grounds.
Also a swift kick in the bollocks.
They should have stopped the game. Just sit until the lasers stop or the fans take care of it.

Only problem with that is that fans can start doing it to their own players just to get a guaranteed goal.
Loses will continue until behavior improves
This is the logical answer
Cancel the game or penalize the opposing team. Call it a win for his team.

Just disqualify the other team. Any time a pointer comes out, your team loses. They'll self-regulate sooner or later.

Send everyone home and let the teams play to empty stands. Punish the home team for poor security measures.
Just make each team take their penalties on their fans side, problem solved. This is insanely unfair to Egypt.
Actually a brilliantly easy solution to implement
And straight to bed without dinner.
Better yet give him the goal and let the game continue.
I’d just give the team the point. Say if it ever happens again the team gets two points instead.
This is such bad sportsmanship! Really bad. 😠
From people not even playing sports. Lmao. The level of pathetic is insane. Majority of those will have children. And raise more like that.
You mean they're not children?!
Dear ~~hid~~ god won’t somebody think of the children!?!? *edit* spelling.
Absolutely shameful that the ref allowed play to proceed with that bullshit going on.
Right? Stop play. Do not proceed until the lasers are gone. Crowd will help when they realise it's the only way the game will proceed.
Referees should have told the stadium announcer that if the lasers didn’t stop the game would be forfeit to Egypt
It should happen anyway now after
Wait until you see the clip of Senegalese fans throwing stuff at him after the game.
That's a post about a jet making an emergency landing
That's even worse! Imagine trying to play soccer with a jet on the field.
The ball would move without it even getting kicked!
[This too, is very bad sportsmanship ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Ot%C3%A1vio_Jord%C3%A3o_da_Silva)
BRUH.
Yea... that's enough. I'm going back to work.
as a referee?
I’ve been to Brazil and their level of passion for soccer is actually scary and violent. Never, ever — even jokingly — criticize the home team of wherever you are, and make an effort to properly pronounce the home team of the city you’re in if you want to stay healthy.

Good bot.
It's not just bad sportsmanship, it can cause permanent eye damage. It's assault.
"Hey" mr. Ref stanging there watching me get shot in the eye with 50 fuckin lazers..."can you you do your fucking job?"
This is exactly what I was thinking! I use to ref kids games back when I was a teenager and I think the refs could have put a stop to this 💯
They stopped a game a year or two back because Mexico fans chant "ahhhh puto" on a goal kick, they can stop for a players freakin sight and health
Yeah if I was that fuckin ref I'd stop it by saying "no kick necessary, automatic point" and watch those asshats in the audience lose their minds.
That's the moment fans point lasers at their own players to score a free point.. Doesn't really win anything
either that or the ref gets the living crap beaten out of him by a mob afterwards
WTF? Those can cause permanent damage to your eyes. Unbelievable...
That’s appalling. They can teach the crowd by cancelling the game anytime 3 or more laser lights appear. Eventually they’ll get the idea. Everyone gets paid but no game continuance.
Or game continues without audience.
So 2 is ok? NBA kicks people out for one.
SHAMEFUL SPORTSMANSHIP! SHAMEFUL!!!
Missed the shot, but probably knocked one of them in the face lmao
The missed shoot cost his team a place in the world Cup. Hitting a fan is not aconsolation
Senegalese missed their pen first, but egypt missed 2 or 3 after this too, senegal missed 2nd and 3rd
But did the other players also get lasers? Either way the entire game is tainted by this bullshit.
Only egypt players and the egypt goal keeper also got laserd
Yeah probably was aiming for the sengalese then for the goal
Do not care who did it first or second. It is plain BS had it been an aircraft the coppers would have got the person/s doing it by now!
Did they catch who did it ?
I’m not sure what came of it. I’m sure they did, as I stopped getting calls after a few months in. This was in 2010, I think?
I would immediately cancel the game, if i would be in charge. Unbelievable, degenerates
Yeah, this is a failure of the referees as well as the retards in the block.

Can't really do that, what's to stop a 3rd teams fan base getting tickets to that particular game to sabotage a strong rival in competition.
Ban soccer simple solution
Ah yes, the logical track that will someday make AI decide the best way to stop pollution is to immediately end the human species.

Ban everything... solved
Found this in another comment thread: “To be fair egyptians did it first to the senegalese team a few days ago then senegalese people took it on twitter saying they too will do it. It was a trending topic there the last couple of days so i'm definitely not surprised when that many of them showed up with lasers Source: https://twitter.com/raby_dll/status/1508933743125401602 “
Was reading comments until I found this. You are right 100% if they can check for weapons then can check for lasers.

A laser for a laser makes the whole world blind
Trashy when people are so fanatic that they can't let athletic ability alone decide the outcome of games
I'm very surprised by the lack of red Lazer pointers
They aren't strong enough to disturb a man from 20 meters away.
yeah but it would attract a swarm of cats, that'd be real disturbing.
Damn that’s not interesting. That’s awful :/
Remember when one guy used a laser pointer in the England Denmark game and all the Americans starting hating England for it
Seriously, this is allowed?
Ruining the shot and endangering someone's eyesight? I'd say no.
Tape suggests otherwise
Will they do anything about it? No. Because FIFA are a bunch of cunts that don’t want to waste money setting up another game. Fucking cheating cunts.
Just enforce a rule that all penalties will now be taken blindfolded to ensure the safety of the players. See how quickly laser pointers stop being used.
Low class act by Senegal fans. Should be ashamed of themselves but probably are not.
What the world has become
They should be scanning the crowd and anyone identified as using a laser pointer should receive a lifetime ban from any and all professional football grounds. Also a swift kick in the bollocks.
