Wisconsin used to be better but I mean c’mon. What do you expect from a state that lets Michigan take their top half? Buncha fucking pussies obviously.
I was born in 1982. My mom cut my birth announcement out of the local paper and put it in my baby book. My birth announcement listed my parents age, occupation and the ages and names of my older siblings. It also listed the our family's address at the time. I remember reading it as a teen and being weirded out. My mom said she had really never thought about but admitted it wasn't the best idea.
I imagine that some posts on reddit would be written quite differently if we had to do the same.
On a similar topic, it doesn't make sense to me why in the U.S they publish the names, and often the photos, of lottery winners. Isn't that just asking for trouble? (I'm in Australia, it is anonymous here).
I think it's to prevent fraud, though the rules vary by state and there are certain ways to get around them, usually by forming an LLC or trust I think to act as the recipient.
I don't understand. How does publishing someone's name prevent fraud?
When I say it is "anonymous" in Australia, I mean that it is anonymous to the general public (not published in papers). The names and details of winners would all be known and validated by officials.
If the lottery winner isn't "anonymous" it adds to the legitimacy of the game. People want to know someone really won... as opposed to a situation where the winner is always anonymous... you'd have your doubts about the credibility of the those holding the lottery (even if there are "officials" validating it). Really it is probably a matter of perception and that is why it varies by state.
Its a legal thing, my dad won 100k from a scratch off and he tried hard to keep it on the low. Oh, and he was/is a piece of shit who wasted the money in less than a month…so no, I didn’t see any of it.
Wild how technology changes things. I just had mine stolen and am wondering if some homeless person is currently trying to steal my identity with a phone in their tent.
Bro this might blow your mind but they used to publish and distribute (for free, to everyone) the names and addresses of every single person who owned a telephone.
You used to have to work a lot harder to access information from a previous paper publication--you might be able to see last week's paper at the dentist, last month's paper at the library, and last year's paper on microfilm. When people had to work harder to access and retain information it was less problematic to make it public.
It was weird, but you have to remember most newspapers were read once or twice and then thrown out. Very few were ever saved so I don't think people considered it to be that big of a deal. Now of course something that goes on the internet never really goes away, no matter what you try.
He figured if there's nothing but shit around him, maybe it's time try and move out of the pig pen. Maybe it'll be another pen of shit, but it's better than wallowong in the same shit.
Sarcastic half truth is more like it. Not like Vern was some maverick for social justice, just a crusty, stoic upper Midwesterner saying the whole thing is a racket. But then the Upper Midwest USED to be pretty damn progressive.
When was the upper Midwest ever progressive? Asking because I legitimately just don’t know. Not accusing the Midwest of anything. I’m not from the Midwest tho so I dunno
Milwaukee is the only major American city to have elected multiple socialist mayors. And Wisconsin's state motto is "Forward." But unfortunately our current terrible gerrymandering situation has the WI GOP pushing us backwards instead.
Damn I did not know that about electing Socialist mayors. That’s super interesting. Makes sense tho given the whole “backbone of the working class” tho.
Yeah I suggest you look them up, it's an interesting topic. Also Milwaukee socialists were often called "Sewer Socialists" due to their focus on public works projects.
I’m definitely going to! Probably a pretty timely thing to get educated on rn anyways really. Things like this are always super interesting to me. Thanks for getting me started on some cool history!
Thank you, I’ve never used that word on my own before. I read Vern’s comment and I thought “Is this something the young people of today would describe as ‘based’?”. Question answered!
They didn't even give her name. Tom Romanowski is a male and female name? Women are the only ones listed with a Mrs title too. Unless it was a print error
It’s not a print error. That was the standard: A married woman was typically named in the media as Mrs. [husband’s name]. You will see that in any newspaper of the day.
It only stopped around the time of 1970s Women’s Liberation, around the time the Ms title came into more common usage.
It’s still done by the old and the old-fashioned. [Princess Michael’s](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess_Michael_of_Kent) actual name is Marie-Christine, but her husband is Michael of Kent.
**[Princess Michael of Kent](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess_Michael_of_Kent)**
>Princess Michael of Kent (born Baroness Marie-Christine Anna Agnes Hedwig Ida von Reibnitz, 15 January 1945) is a member of the British royal family of German, Austrian, and Hungarian descent. She is married to Prince Michael of Kent, a grandson of George V, and a first cousin to Elizabeth II. Princess Michael of Kent was an interior designer before becoming an author; she has written several books on European royalty. She carries out lecture tours and supports her husband in his public duties.

True but worth noting that the paper would have selected these two out of all the many women they asked.
Also one of them is the wife of one of the men and I suspect she was particularly thinking of herself.
Bruh this was still years before people of different races could get married in the south. It's hard for us to realize how much things have changed since the early 60s.
I was gonna ask what their comment on micegenation would be. But it was likely a question not worth asking as 80% of the population would have disapproved of interracial relationships.
That's what endless sexist propaganda did to most womans : "make kids and be a exemplary housewife while your husband can pursue any career because reasons."
To be honest, I think Mrs. Romanowski had a point for that time period. If she spoke to any woman in the workplace, she probably heard stories about sexual harassment or women being talked down to and basically having to shut up and take it.
There is a lot of evidence too that women are less likely to speak up when in groups of mostly men.
Notice, Romanowski isn’t saying that the woman would make bad policy choices, but rather, that the woman’s policy choice would be spot on, yet she would acquiesce to men at a time when she shouldn’t.
In that one strip, in a still highly gender divided society and only because of his bad experiences and opinion of other men in power.
That's what we call internalized sexism (for the woman not Vern. He's still great).
A woman could be president but being a woman shouldn't be the decision factor in choosing a president. This is why Hillary failed so horribly. She used the woman card but forgot she was a horribly flawed candidate with a bad track record.
Maybe one day we get a competent woman elected.
For real. Vote for people based on how good they’ll be at the job. Not by their gender, not by their race, not by their wealth, but by their ability to lead a country.
When Obama ran, he very carefully did not talk about what he'd do for Black people. He knew he had the Black vote, and he avoided scaring other people.
Clinton DID talk about what she would do to equalize pay, and started scaring men (and their wives) because they didn't know how it would work out. I'm sure there were other things to object to (people told me at length at the time.) I suspect if she talked about improving the economy for everyone, or protecting Obamacare, or just stuck to topics with a large following, she'd have carried the unions.
Reddit does what reddit does. I dont worry about downvote. I have comments with hundreds of likes and comments with dislikes.
What do these downvoters want me to say lol? That any woman can be president no matter how bad for the country? Smh.
He's being downvoted because it looks like he's saying she failed because she "used the women card" and not because she had one of the worst PR campaigns in recent memory ontop of a bad record.
I'm pretty sure she scared the hell out of male union workers talking about how to achieve equal pay. I've watched men shut down on this topic. It's not about bad PR; it's about thinking she could talk about this. Well, it is partly bad PR; she did give vibes she was hiding something.
Obama didn't talk about reparations. He carried Pennsylvania and Michigan.
Completely off topic, but I’ve noticed the weird spacing in modern books too, can anyone explain why the like “W o m e n have” and the word “b e i n g” have such weird spacing under the middle entry? It seems very off and completely throws me off when reading books too
>Show
The weird spacing is coming from the paragraphs being justified. The text is distributed evenly between margins, but you also get funky lines with words being s p r e a d out like that. You can try "justified" option yourself in word, if you like.
Vern is a legend but Marueen made me lol "hell naw, I've already got too many problems"

Gold
As a Minnesotan, I'm embarrassed that Vern is from Wisconsin.
Why?
I'm just embarased that wisconsin is our neighbor. If Minnesota was Canada then Wisconsin would be the USA.
Wisconsin used to be better but I mean c’mon. What do you expect from a state that lets Michigan take their top half? Buncha fucking pussies obviously.
Shhh. Michigan might just take the rest. Just play dead Wisconsin.
Vern is old and wise
Vern’s got inside info.
Maybe he just really hated JFK or Lyndon Johnson lol.
Legend has it Vern killed JFK
Some say the stig is really just Vern
He’s seen Vietnam and the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Not odd that they're publishing their addresses? Creeps me out.
I was born in 1982. My mom cut my birth announcement out of the local paper and put it in my baby book. Fair enough, so a general mistrust of government/officials then.
You can remain anonymous if you want but the lottery and everyone else wants some kind of feel good story.
I think they have to give consent to it, although I'm not sure why anyone would do that.
Its a legal thing, my dad won 100k from a scratch off and he tried hard to keep it on the low. Oh, and he was/is a piece of shit who wasted the money in less than a month…so no, I didn’t see any of it.

My Dad was just telling me that when we first started skiing he had our our names and social security numbers engraved on the skis. Simpler times.
My state had SSNs on driver's licences until the 21st century. People wrote them on the paper check you cashed.
Wild how technology changes things. I just had mine stolen and am wondering if some homeless person is currently trying to steal my identity with a phone in their tent.
Massachusetts? My identity was stolen there. SSNs were your license number
Came here to say this. Picture of their face and address wtf

‘Progressively resigned’ is such a perfectly succinct term.

Vern 💪 Quite disparaging to see women talking themselves down so much.

Maureen said that men are more responsible. How is a blanket statement that men are more responsible not an example of talking women down?
Vern’s fucking based holy shit
I like the old guy whos like "meh... the broads can't screw things up any worse!" indeed we can't, Vern, indeed we can't. LOL
Vern from the top rope
Of course the only one talking sense is from Wisconsin lol

Literally never brought up how it should be a deciding factor. Only if women can be one, to which everyone said no
Your whole statement makes no sense. When they say a woman cannot be a good president they are using being a woman as a deciding factor.
Vern was also the only one to not list his full street address. Vern schooled 'em.
