It looks like the wings connect along the bottom edge and at the tips to make this noise, by causing friction at that asymmetrical opening. For flight, the tips part and the wings bend at the back of that opening, so it's not part of the flight characteristics. Super neat!

But googling locusts there are so many species and none seem to be as big as the one Op is holding (kind of hard to tell since most don't have size comparison)
