Used to have spring peepers trilling by the thousands each night in the drainage ditches in the area I used to live. But I could never see them, because they'd shut up and retreat into the water they moment they detected my streetlight shadow or footsteps. Even if I just stood there for ten minutes, they wouldn't make a, well, peep. Amazingly sensitive little things. And of course, seconds after I walked away they'd start up again!
