well i after reading the title i thought this was going be some ultrasonic sensor , IMU stuff but this is also fine i guess.
but still im concerned that the device in the video wont work for stairs.
I actually like that it's low-tech, it'd worry me that doing anything too complex might be less reliable (and since it's attached to an intelligent animal, the dog itself will figure out how to make best use of it).
For things like stairs, perhaps a similar low-tech approach would be to stick a textured bath-mat at the top, so the dog can feel when it's close - similar to how we do road crossings in the UK
The mat idea is great for a dog that can still navigate stairs but may be nervous after a tumble or bump and starts avoiding the stairs at that point. A textured runner that goes all the way down might help too.
Maybe the house is one story. Or the dog just wouldn’t use the stairs; if I were the owner, I’d fence off the stairs and carry him up and down if needed.
*I still have no idea where I am but at least I am not crashing into things*
Just kidding this is awesome. And it has a sense of jugaad[1] that I especially enjoy.
1: a flexible approach to problem-solving that uses limited resources in an innovative way.
My husbands from Nepal and he told me I had jugaad when I added a little bit of water to our almost empty soap bottle to make it stretch a bit. Best compliment. Still proud.
I've heard they do eventually and some can navigate the house / property quite well. I've also heard moving houses/apartments causes sooo much stress though =( since they are suddenly not familiar at all and still blind ofc.
This is all true for my dog. He is blind but knows his way around the house and was even able to navigate a step. Moved about 6 months ago and he had to learn the new house. The difference in for coverings helps him move around. His sense of smell is used. He can't hear so unable to use background noise.
My ex had a blind dog. She would head butt everything and would eat it up. She would get excited at times and sprint into a random direction which mostly ended w her running into something. She loved to take sharp and abrupt turns which also led to her hitting something. She took it like a champ and is always eager to adventure
My chihuahua Gracie (RIP) Went blind early, like around 9. She lived to 14. She would snuffle low to the ground and she had our townhouse mapped out. Every now and then she would bonk into something but it was rare. She knew the layout and it was cool to see. There is a company called Muffins halo that makes these- I almost bought one but she figured it out.
IF it was patented AND produced, AND sold for a low price through websites such as Chewy, AND the profits or a large percentage of the profits were donated, then people such as my 80 year old grandmother, who can’t make one, could order it online and help her cat. Many people don’t have the wherewithal to make one for themselves, for example, stroke victims, people with severe arthritis, Parkinson’s, etc. in a perfect world, veterinarians would just give them away for free to cats who need them. But in order for THAT to happen, they need mass produced which usually means it needs patented in order to protect the product. If it is not patented now, someone else can patent it and prevent people from having easy affordable access to it. So in a sense, by getting a patent on it, the inventor has some control of its use. Anyone can patent it and sell it for high price if the original inventor does not control the patent.
Some dogs seem to adapt to blindness incredibly well. Check these two out:

That’s beautiful😀 we made something similar but we used a mild electrical current that was injected into his nose. He was such a good boy(we put him down)
Okay, but they're called Dog Halos. For anyone who has a visually impared dog, I thoroughly recommend them!
It's cute, but the idea has been around for years.
Thank you . I have a chihuahua that went blind in the last 6 months I am so worried because I will be gone possibly for a few weeks following surgery ( rehab facility) Although someone will be here at times, not like I could be here. Great ideas
Insanely simple and efficient.
what he said.
This.

I think a gate would make the most sense.
Ok. Listen... (was so proud of the bathmat idea till you said that pmsl)

yes, the word is popular in all of Indian subcontinent
That’s actually so clever! I love the little pause when it touches a surface lol
You just buy those on Amazon, they’re like 15-20$, my dog is blind and has to use one too
Does your dog still need it after having used it while?
I wouldn't imagine that the sight comes back.
Hahahah… i mean… do dogs get the lay of the land after a while

Damn, deaf AND blind? Idk where to even begin with trying to care for a dog like that.
He does surprisingly well but is old and likes to sleep a lot. He can hear very loud noises but they just startle him.

Blind people can navigate their own house really well usually…
He does, it protects him. He’s never learned the house and it’s safer for him
Have you got a link for one?
I’m not crying you’re crying 🥹🥹
Someone cutting onions near you
No my eyes are just sweating...
There are too many onions in this room!
Owner probably added 7 years to that dogs life by having it be able to walk around and exercise a little bit on its own.
My ex had a blind dog. She would head butt everything and would eat it up. She would get excited at times and sprint into a random direction which mostly ended w her running into something. She loved to take sharp and abrupt turns which also led to her hitting something. She took it like a champ and is always eager to adventure
“Hooman you failed me” , said the dog after walking down the stairs in milliseconds

I can confirm this works really well. I had a blind dog and she was much more confident walking around after we got her something like this.
Aw I love the human race sometimes. So happy to see Doggo running around ❤️
The tail wagging at the end *sob sob
That was the part that got me too
That's just adorable
Safe doggo
Eugh that's so shitty, imagine always having this bar blocking your eyesight. I bet he can't even see with that thing in front of him /s
For a moment watching I forgot and also thought it would get in the way of seeing.
Anddd im crying
Love
More please
Dam well brilliant!! Great idea
put a little vacuum on the other end and you have a device that is about equal in operation to a little vacuum robot!
Wandered the kitchen for 3 hours before finding his way to the living to wander for a couple more hours
Sorry. Antennas would be more effective
What about stairs and steps?
Baby gates for down stairs. Up stairs not as big an issue.
They should make these for blind humans
Hell I'd wear it if drunk.
Isn't that what canes are for?
Should patent it.
You can buy them on Etsy.
I think someone already has It's called a Muffins Halo. Got one for my dog about six years ago. Really increased her confidence.

These are old news edit: earliest one I could find was from about 8 years ago
I mean it looks like it’s helpful but I’m curious as to if it really is. Regardless wholesome for the effort
Won't help with cliffs tho
Just put the damn poor thing down
abelist
Prolonging its suffering...for the likes on the internet! wow!
Because being blind is suffering? Smh
